No. 17 Houston survives scare by Tech

HOUSTON (AP)—Houston’s first win over a Big 12 opponent earned the Cougars their first ranking in 18 years.

The second makes Houston a legitimate contender to become Conference USA’s first BCS buster.

Case Keenum finished off a 95-yard touchdown drive with a 4-yard quarterback keeper with 49 seconds left to give the 17th-ranked Cougars a 29-28 win over Texas Tech on Saturday night.

Houston coach Kevin Sumlin downplayed the Bowl Championship Series possibilities.

“All we can do is play the people on our schedule,” he said. “We’re not going worry about that.”

The Cougars trailed 21-10 in the first half, but held Tech’s high-powered offense to one second half score.

Houston (3-0) was playing as a ranked team for the first time in 18 years after knocking off then No. 5 Oklahoma State two weeks ago. A record crowd of 32,114, including Phi Slama Jama stars Hakeem Olajuwon Clyde Drexler showed up to cheer them on.

Keenum passed for 435 yards and kept the game-winning drive going with a 7-yard pass to Patrick Edwards on fourth-and-3.

“If you don’t look forward to that and have excitement then you’re not alive, you’re not human,” Keenum said. “It’s a lot of fun and I’d like to do this every week.”

The Red Raiders (2-2) led 28-23 midway through the fourth quarter before Will Ford’s interception stopped a Cougar drive. But Tech couldn’t convert and had to punt back to Houston with about six minutes remaining.

Tech had a last chance for the win but Taylor Potts’ desperation throw on the last play of the game was broken up by the Cougars, sending thousands of Houston fans onto the field.

Potts finished with 321 yards passing and a touchdown pass.

“I thought it became a game of situations where Houston played better in key situations than we did,” Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said.

Keenum was 38 of 58 and had a touchdown pass and an interception in the first meeting between these two teams since 1995 when both were in the Southwest Conference.

He spread the ball well with four receivers catching at least seven passes. Charles Sims led with 10 receptions for 122 yards and Tyron Carrier had eight for 99 yards.

It was the shootout most expected with the two teams combining for 1,063 yards of offense.

But the pass-happy Red Raiders relied more heavily than normal on their running game. Tech had gained 86 yards rushing in its first three games but had 163 Saturday.

Of course the Red Raiders still passed plenty. Potts was 30 for 45 with a touchdown pass.

A hands to the face penalty by Tyrell Graham erased an interception with less than a minute left in the third quarter. But the Red Raiders weren’t able to take advantage of the blunder and came away empty after Potts was stuffed for no gain on fourth down from the 1.

“We need to score and then we get a half a yard,” Leach said. “Hindsight I should have kicked it, which is a fairly big botch on my part I would say.”

David Hunter forced his second fumble of the night when he made Tech freshman Eric Stephens cough it up late in the third quarter. C.J. Cavness recovered it for the Cougars.

They drove to the 4, but came away with only a field goal after three consecutive incomplete passes. That left the Red Raiders ahead 28-23.

Potts connected on a 24-yard TD with Tramain Swindall with about four minutes left in the third quarter. Swindall shed three Houston defenders, the last near the goal line, on the score that stretched Tech’s lead to 28-20.

Bryce Beall’s 1-yard run got Houston within 21-20 midway through the third quarter. A nifty 45-yard reception by Carrier got the Cougars in scoring position.

Harrison Jeffers pushed Tech’s lead to 21-10 with a 13-yard run less than a minute before halftime. It was Tech’s third rushing TD of the half after scoring three on the ground in the previous three games combined.

Mannisto hit a career-long 50-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter to make it 21-13 at halftime.

The Red Raiders relied on the run on a 69-yard drive capped by an 11-yard run by Baron Batch to take a 14-10 lead in the second quarter. Batch finished with 114 yards rushing.

Keenum put the Cougars up early with a 6-yard touchdown pass to James Cleveland in the first quarter. It was his school-record 19th straight game with a touchdown throw, surpassing Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware.

A 6-yard run by Batch evened it up at 7-all later in the first quarter.

In this game, Leach was outcoached by UH in the 4th quarter. Batch was running north, south, east and west on the coog defense and there was nothing they could do to stop him. We had the lead and we just needed to drain that clock but Leach insisted upon throwing the ball. I don't know whether Leach was calling pass plays, or Potts was audibling at the line, but it was a large mistake that costed them the ball game. Good job Houston.
    Wreck em tech.

But we should take a look in the mirror before calling another fan base Classless. We have quite a few on Saturdays ourselves. I ve seen many firsthand at games and its a shame.

Anyone complaining about how the Houston fans acted needs to keep it in perspective. There were PLENTY of rude, drunk, obnoxious Tech fans there as well. I hate seeing that crap from any fans, no matter the circumstances or who they root for. We had good conversations with Tech fans both at our tailgate & during the game.
Back in the SWC days when Tech & U of H played every year, we got the same treatment up in Lubbock & the same thing happened in the Astrodome. We witnessed it everywhere, it's not a new thing & sad to say it was expected since Houston were the new kids in the conference. There are always bad apples. Don't paint everyone with the same brush.

I'm from Houston but I was really upset with the way Houston fans acted, they where really rude to me and other Tech fans. Since I am from Houston I know we have a bunch of people who jump on the band wagon.

    Wreck'em Tech.

First off. I'm a TTU alum living in Houston (as were probably half the TTU fans at the game) so we don't get to watch our team much. Congrats to UH. It was a well fought game and it pains me to say it but they just wanted it more in the 4th quarter. Game could have gone either way. UH has impressed me this year and they should go undefeated the rest of the way. So to you faithgul Coog fans enjoy the dream season. It can go to hell the next year when you lose a heisman candidate quarterback, trust me. So help me God if you lose to a lesser C-USA team I'll hunt you down. But for all you other fair weather Coog fans who only show up when UH is winning and flap your pie hole about my school just remember this...you used the win over my team to measure how good your team is this year which is actually a complement. You'll be in Lubbock next year...well if you're winning at the time, and probably the only Coogs you'll see in the stands will be the parents of the players. The other Big 12 teams know better than to talk trash when coming to Lubbock. And stealing your own players helmets...come on! Classless.

Thank you for this insightful post.

A brilliant composition worthy of an academic institution like A&M. Incidentally, if you're going to extol the academic virtuosity of your beloved school, have some respect for the English language.

I'll leave it to the UH fans to comment on the A&M donkey factor in Houston. It pains me to say this, but congrats to UH on a hard fought, and deserved win. Hopefully we'll get the chance for payback... Red, Black and Bumming.

As a TTU alum, two things stand out (1) turnovers cost TTU 10 Points, (2) poor coaching (Leach said he blew the call) cost TTU 3 points. Eliminate the mistakes, and TTU wins. That said, let's give Houston credit where credit is due... Houston drove the ball 95 yards to get the win. I was sitting on my couch with that what the f### just happened look on my face. A&M has had that look since 1990, and Texas had it last year. Texas got redemption: TTU better wake up and learn how to finish or A&M will be smiling too.

Congrats to Houston. They earned the W.

What a horrible game! The Red Raiders are terrible, and mike leach needs to be fired immediately! When you have a 4th and goal with the game on the line...KICK THE DAMN FG! Are you kidding me? Taylor Potts is not a good QB, and Seth Doege, the backup is better than him! I am tired of rooting for them year after year, and this is the kind of crap that ALWAYS happens! Hell, the refs even tried to give Tech the game, and they still blew it! We will never be able to beat a good team on the road, and that is the difference between boys and men, folks! I am trading in my red and black for something else...maybe burnt orange? Those guys can play hurt, sick, half dead...whatever, and still pull one out! FIREMIKELEACH.COM!....someone start it up!

Eh, this is the game we call college football. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. This was UH's year and that's good for them, it was a good game. They need this kind of year so they can take it to the next level. Next year they go to the LBK and the Jones and we'll see how the dice roll out of that one.

From a scheduling standpoint, I'd like to see this game continue. I think it would give good exposure to both schools as far as recruiting in the area and state, as well as keep the names of the universities out in the public mind. It's an intrastate game featuring two former conference foes in one of the football hotbeds as far as recruiting goes. There are at least three undertones for the game: 1)in state bragging rights, 2) conference bragging rights, and 3) recruiting exposure. TCU would also be another one I'd like to see on the schedule. TCU has had a good program in the last few years. The same undertones (overtones if you like) would apply to the DFW metroplex too. Gotta love college football!

This has no relevance to football, but Robert personally challenged me to find a college ranking that places Tech ahead of U of H. Here you go. As proven by the standardized test scores, Tech students enter college with more knowledge in comparison to U oh H students. A significant portion of the rankings are best on post graduate success, evaluation of professors and courses, and graduation rates.

You guys need to step away from the pipe because the smoke is crowding your reality. I can't wait till someone hits you in the mouth one of these weeks. You better believe I'm going to be the first person on here.

Another things I'm going to "complain" about is Houston had two weeks to prepare for this game. That is a signficant advantage, as players have an extra week to heal, watch film, and practice their game plans. It sure payed dividends.

I am an OSU fan and watched that game. OSU was flat that game and the offense still is not high octane. I thought Houston was terrific on offense. Us OSU fans were thinking our defense has not improved very much. Watching what UofH did to Tech and how Tech player Texas I will say that UofH has a super offense and great Quarterback...Casey should be a Heisman candidate at least. I am also impressed with UofH defensive line not because them having a great defense but rather that they are small by most major university football standards yet they had a phenomenal goal line stand. Being an OSU fan I think if we played UofH again we would win as we had a few really poor plays that cost the game. Why is UofH not ranked higher.....heck why is Tech not even rated...I think they are both real good teams. Both Tech and UofH have young players these next two years they will be the Nations leaders. Congrats UofH.
