No. 1 Florida wins but Tebow injured

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)—With one scary hit on Tim Tebow, the fate of No. 1 Florida — and really, the entire complexion of the college football season—could have changed.

The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback was knocked out of Florida’s 41-7 victory against Kentucky after a hard shot to the head in the third quarter, and taken by ambulance to a hospital.

“I don’t know, I think it’s a concussion,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said. “I think he’ll be all right.

“He took a pretty good shot.”

Tebow was scheduled to stay overnight in the hospital, Florida spokesman Steve McClain said.

The Gators were leading 31-7 and driving deep in Kentucky territory when Tebow was sacked by Kentucky defensive end Taylor Wyndham on a vicious but clean hit. As he fell back with Wyndham on top of him, Tebow’s head struck teammate Marcus Gilbert’s leg, violently bending his neck forward.

Tebow, a tank of a quarterback at 245 pounds, lay motionless for several minutes while Commonwealth Stadium fell silent. He sat up with some help then slowly made his way off the field to a loud ovation. Florida’s medical staff attended to him on the bench and his parents came down from the stands to join him.

He was eventually carted off the field with concussion-like symptoms, vomiting several times.

Florida is off next week, then plays at LSU on Oct. 10. It’s probably the toughest game on Florida’s regular-season schedule and would be even tougher without Tebow.

A third national title in four seasons for Florida, a second Heisman for Tebow, all that becomes iffy if his injury causes him to miss games. Oddly, Saturday started with questions about Tebow’s availability because of a respiratory illness.

Meyer said Tebow had just one question after the hit.

“He asked me ‘Did I hold onto the ball?”’ Meyer said. “I told him he did and he winked at me and said ‘It’s great to be a Gator.”’

Still, the image of their leader laying helpless proved unsettling for the defending national champions.

“He was a little fuzzy coming off the field,” said backup quarterback John Brantley. “He was looking around. I guess making sure he was in Kentucky.”’

The win extended Florida’s winning streak to 14 games, tops in the nation as the Gators (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) continued their mastery over the Wildcats (2-1, 0-1). Florida has won 23 straight in the series, the second longest active winning streak by one team over another in the country.

Yet the outcome became a mere footnote after Tebow went down.

And now two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks have been knocked out of games in the first month of the season, with Tebow joining Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, who injured his shoulder in Week 1 and hasn’t played since.

The injury put a stop to another vintage performance by Tebow, whose status appeared to be in doubt in the hours before the game.

Tebow was one of several Gators who took a separate plane north because of respiratory and congestion issues, leading to speculation the Heisman Trophy winner wouldn’t play.

If Tebow wasn’t feeling well, it didn’t show. He walked off the field following pregame warmups trading head slaps with teammate Brandon Spikes and nearly sprinted into the huddle on Florida’s first possession.

He rumbled for 29 yards on the third play of the game, breaking a tackle at the line of scrimmage and bolting through the secondary before getting shoved out of bounds.

The drive ended in a field goal, but he was simply getting started. Tebow put the Gators up 10-0 on a 3-yard touchdown run, silencing a crowd hoping Florida could be had if

The Wildcats couldn’t get out of their own way. An illegal motion penalty on a punt forced them to re-kick, and the Gators took advantage when Chris Rainey blocked it and then fell on the ball in the end zone to make it 17-0 Florida.

The Gators had it back five plays later and Tebow led them on a 58-yard drive that included a pair of vintage Tebow runs. First he shook Kentucky cornerback Cartier Rice with some nifty footwork then spun forward for an extra yard to get the ball to the Kentucky 2.

On the next play Tebow turned to hand the ball off to running back Jeff Demps. One problem: Demps had run the other way. No biggie. Tebow tucked the ball, stepped through a tackle and walked into the end zone for his 48th career rushing touchdown, leaving him one shy of Herschel Walker’s SEC record.

He later added a 44-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez on the last play of the first quarter, ending a 31-point deluge that left the Wildcats stunned.

“We were doing what we wanted to do,” said Florida wide receiver David Nelson. “We did just about anything.”

Kentucky eventually found its composure, but by then it was too late.

“We got our fannies kicked all over the field in every phase,” said Kentucky coach Rich Brooks. “I didn’t have my team ready to play.”

The Gators had struggled in last week’s win over Tennessee, leading to whispers that Tennessee defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin had found the blueprint on stopping Florida’s high-powered attack.

Those problems seemed long gone during a nearly flawless first half, and the Gators were going for more when Tebow went down.

Brantley came on in relief of Tebow and led Florida to a late touchdown, but by then the focus of the game had turned from the action on the field to Tebow’s health.

Tebow finished with 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He added another 103 yards and a score through the air, numbers that seemed unimportant the second he hit the turf.

“He ran for 130 yards and that wasn’t the plan,” Meyer said. “That’s one tough cat out there.”

take pride that OU plays six (currently ranked) teams. we will see where the likes of Nebraska, BYU and Kansas (hasn't Reesing turned 30 yet? damn he's been there since the 90's). say UF plays a weak ACC team in FSU -- the same FSU that beat BYU by 30 at BYU. right. the arguments run in circles. at the end of the year, when the championship is on the line, the SEC has not only won the BCS but has done it handily -- by an average of 2 touchdowns. the gators, by an average of 18 points. so, yeah. stop arguing.

Hey , the truth, what a bogus blogger you are. I read some of your truths and you,my friend, are a moron. You twist truths like no other. To start with, the SEC has 12 teams not just Florida and Alabama. Check you facts ,bozo, about the toughness of the SEC schedule. And to answer another stupid statement by you,
Trent Richardson is a Freshman and has played part time and only that much because of a team injury. He broke all of Emmit Smith records in High School and was rated higher than your small school dude in WV. Time , only will tell about that comparison. But I got a laugh out of you making it. You got whipped by a better team, just get over it or STFU.

Whenever the overrated SEC teams play UCLA, USC, or Cal, the result is the same: Gettysburg all over again.

And Tebow got Stonewall Jacksoned! Taken down by his own man -- only in the South, where the family trees don't fork!

Star Power - Yeah you are a retard. Florida plays 2 ranked teams this year, plays 8 home games, 4 road games, out of conference is the worst (next to Alabama) of all legitamate contenders. Unfortunately Bama or Florida should play in the NC game based solely on their INCREDIBLE weak schedule.

Read this article on Bama (this could easily apply to Ole Miss and Florida).

It is slow here at work today so, here goes...............rick z , I am one of those retarded SEC fans .... Probably the single dumbest in all sports but we will start at the bottom with you.

First: Tebow was hit violently by an opposing player and knocked into his own man, so, to start with, your civil war history analogy is not only inacurate but frankly lame and stupid. a lot like you.

Next , all conferences have a few cupcakes- you heard me, ALL do . But you might want to check out their conference schedule because it is the toughest in the nation. 3 top 5 teams or SEC, of coarse you know that even being lame and stupid.

Next - Being overrated means your are rated higher at something than you are able to accomplish. The current National Champion in from the SEC and 4 of the last 6 are from the SEC. You can not be rated any higher than National Champion. So, bonehead , by definition alone the SEC is not capable of being overrated. Till someone comes along and knocks the SEC out ,that will not change.

Now that is your lesson for today from a retarded SEC fan.

The retarded SEC fans keep talking about how tough their conference is, but their teams can never beat USC, UCLA, or Cal. They always lose to them.

Here's a hint: Wait for your teams to win, then run your mouths about the bottom 6 winning against anyone or whatever other lies you're trying to pass off.

Your teams are overrated, and Tebow got Stonewall Jacksoned. A couple more weeks, and the whole SEC will have been exposed as frauds.

So Cody, with your incredible statistics degree (lol) are you saying that somehow Charleston Southern, Troy, and Florida International) could really be better than an Alabama, Nebraska, ECU, Marshall (VT out of conference) or a Notre Dame, Ohio State, San Jose State (USC out of conference) or any other top 10 team's out of conference schedule. Are you suggesting that these teams could really be secret powerhouses? Are you kidding me. Are you saying that Forida's SEC scedule of TN, Kentucky, Miss State, Arkansas, Vandy, and South Carolina is somehow harder than if they played Miami, Boston College, Clemson, Wake Forrest, NC State.... Are you freaking kidding me. I guarantee that NC State's QB is better than every single QB from TN, Kentucky, Miss ST., Arkansas, Vandy, and SC, and NC State is an average ACC team at best. If you like, I can send you the link that shows Russell Wilson's ranking compared to the Bums at those SEC schools I just mentioned. You are a stats expert right. Well I know my stats. Florida plays 2 ranked teams (a vastly over-rated LSU squad - which will lose at least 3 games and maybe 4) and a Georgia squad that does not have a defense. If Texas, USC, Miami, VT, OK played that schedule (especially with 8 home games and 4 away games) they would definately be favored in every single game and most of those teams would run the table.

Cody and Kenneth - You have your heads up your butt. "Every game in the SEC is a battle" You can say that about every single conference in the nation. If Florida was playing good teams then they would play more than 2 ranked teams this year. The fact remains, the SEC is really no better than most of the other conferences. How can you possible say that Florida's schedule isn't weak. There out of conference games include 3 teams that are in sub-par conferences (Florida International, Charleston Southern, Troy) and the 4th best team in the ACC (Florida State). How can that possible compare to a team like VT that plays Alabama, Nebraska, ECU, and Marshall; or a team like Oklahoma that plays 6 ranked teams this year. There is no comparison. These are FACTS that the Florida fans can't possible fathom. I love the comment about the statistics and blah blah blah degrees. If you were sooo smart you could not possible ignore these FACTS. It is also a fact that Florida has 8 home games and 4 away games. How fair is that? The dumbass comment about Washington is laughable. They lost every game last year and they happen to beat USC and they are instantaneously a respectable team. Did you know that USC lost to Stanford last year (or maybe two years ago) and USC was a 42 point favorite? Does that mean Stanford is that good or USC has a habit of joking against the easiest of opponents. Obviously it is the later, since USC was 19.5 point favorites over USC. Also - Are you kidding me about Mississip State. They should have beaten LSU and they suck bad. LSU is just like Ole Miss, extremely over-rated. That is why Ole Miss dropped from #4 to #21 because the experts understood they were unbelievable over-rated. You dumbass SEC fans are sooo biased it is ridiculous. Now all of a sudden Kentucky is some stacked program. LOL. And who is the clown that said the bottom 6 would win against most conferences bottom 6. Miss St, Vandy, Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, and TN all suck balls. UCLA beat TN at TN for God's sake. Auburn is 4-0 after playing total cream-puffs. I guarantee they lose 5 games this year (and most likely 6). Mark my words

What Truth doesnt see is that Florida also plays in the SEC and that every game there is a battle. The bottom 6 in the SEC would mop the floor of any bottom 6 and almost any top 6 teams in any other confrence. And you keep talking about LSU, they beat Washington at Washington, the same team that knocked off USC. Mississippi State is vastly improved under their new coach. Don't be mad cause the media doesnt care about your confrence and that the SEC has become the minor league for the NFL. And its only going to get stronger and better. No one wants to play up North in some bum cold state. Big 12 is the only confrence that can even sniff the SEC. So get your facts and opinions straight and in a row first.

WOW all these arm chair experts. You guys look at all the ranked teams in this conference and that and think you know something. Every team plays "cream puffs" and every team plays top teams. That's just the nature of the beast. The "Strength of Schedule" concept is extremely overrated. If you want to get technical it goes way deeper than who is ranked where when teams meet. You have to look at who the "Cream puffs" play in order to be labeled as such. I'f a team plays mostly ranked teams and are unranked then you have to look at the stats from said games. If a team is unranked but played several ranked teams and had close games, wouldn't it stand to reason that despite their ranking they are a team to take serious? I know that a lot of the "Experts" on here will laugh and have ignorant comebacks but as a person with a masters in Statistics and a masters in Journalism as well as 22 yrs. of experience as a sports analyst then I think I know a little about football and rankings. But hate on folks, hate on. Florida is number one for a reason and will remain so until someone takes it.

East Coast Bias - What a baffoon you are. You (a) are not intelligent enough to understand facts (b) simply ignore th facts because you cannot see things objectively. Wouldn't it stand to reason that the teams who play more top 25 teams during the season have a harder schedule? By your logic, the SEC is so superior that they must play more ranked teams than other teams in other conferences. Now the facts, the SEC elite teams not only (a) play less ranked teams than the vast majority of the other national championship contenders (b) their non-conference games are significantly weaker than the vast majority of the national championship contenders

Oklahoma - Plays 6 ranked teams
VA Tech - Plays 4 ranked teams
Miami - plays 5 ranked teams
LSU - plays 4 ranked teams
    Texas - 3 ranked teams
    Alabama - 3 ranked teams
    USC - 2 ranked teams
    Florida -2 ranked teams

That's right, Alabama only plays 3 ranked teams and FL. only plays 2 ranked teams (FYI...FL. State is unranked at the moment). Not only that but VT plays Alabama, Nebraska, Marshall, and ECU out of conference. USC plays Ohio State, ND, and San Diego State out of conference. This is much tougher schedules than Alabama (VT, Fl. International, North Texas, and Chattanooga) and Florida (Charleston Southern, Troy, FL. International & Florida State). These are facts and show the disparity in who has a softer schedule.

Keep in mind that it is very likely that Ole Miss, Georgia, and even LSU will fall out of the top 25 in the near future. Georgia plays LSU and then at TN. If they loose either game or both, they will definately be out of the top 25. If they win against LSU (who is unbelievable over-rated), LSU will likely drop like a rock because they should loose to Alabama and Florida in upcoming weeks. Ole Miss dropped from 4 to 21 (as they should) and have to play Alabama in a few weeks. One more lose and they will be out of the 25. These are some "ifs" but all these games I mentioned, LSU, Ole Miss, and GA will be under-dogs in every game and will most likely lose. I would bet the house that within 4-5 weeks, the SEC will only have 3 ranked teams (mark my words). Some point very soon, thwy will only have 4 ranked teams.

Also - some Alabama fan was bragging on there site about how Alabama has the 2nd ranked defense. Obviously this clown didn't take into consideration the fact they played 3 of their games verse FL. International, Troy, and Arkansas

Bottom line, Florida fans should be embarrassed at the fact they will only play 2 ranked teams (prior to SEC championship), play the weakest non-conference schedule out of the entire top 10 teams, play 8 home games and only 4 away games. How can you guys beat your chest when you play absolutely no-one all year. I mean LSU and Georgia and that is it??? Both of those teams are barely top 25 material. LSU was a goal line stand away from already being in the high teens and a last second score to beat Washington. GA allowed over 90 points in back to back games and then squeeked by AZ State at home. You guys actually think the SEC is strong. You are laughable. Again, you can't deny these FACTS

and by the way, i can't wait to beat LSU at LSU with the heisman winner on the sidelines and Brantley at QB. what a profound silence from all of the critics it will be.

This has to be the dumbest argument ever posted by UT fans! I am not even a Gator fan and I have to go to bat for these guys. The SEC is a great conference and the Big 12 has some good times as well but EVERY GREAT TEAM plays cupcakes in the schedule! Look at every top 5 team and tell me how many of them play ridiculous out of conference games? The only one's that do, have to because a) their conference sucks or b) need a big win against a ranked opponent to bolster some points in the polls! DUH! And Tebow, by the way, IS THE GATORS OFFENSE! I dont even know how there is an argument against that. Shut down the pass, he runs THROUGH your defense. McCoy is great as well and may even be a better pro than Tebow, but neither of them are in the pros now and Tebow is definitely the Top guy right now! His receivers are lack luster this year with graduations and injuries and his RB's are all what 5'6 170? Anyways, nothing can be truly settled til you two guys play each other which would be fun to watch!

cant say i doidnt see this coming!! ultimately the florida fans and most importantly the coaching staff of florida are to blame for the injury of tebow. they were sitting on a very comfortable 31-7 lead and the defense was dominating kentucky. conventional wisdom would tell you to get your key players out and give thme a break especially the ones that wer sick anyway. but nooooooooooooo! florida and urban meyer wanted to run the score up to impress everyone and to humiliate ketucky just as they wanted to do against my vols(didnt work!!) so maybe god has dealt you gator fans and tebow a little taste of humility. sportmanship isnt about beating someone by 50 points its about giving respect to your opponent even the gladiators did that. now you gator fans may have to eat some crow and learn to play fair and with some true sportmanship. as much as i loath the gators i truly hope tebow is ok, but next time all of you gator fans start bragging beating a lesser opponent by 50 or 60 points just remember the rule of karma!1 WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND AND THE EVENTUALLY THE MIGHTY FALL HARD!!!!!!!

What's up with the weak Florida schedule. Out of conference they play Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International, and FL. State. What an absolute joke. They pad their schedule verse these cream-puffs. Florida will only play 2 ranked teams. An over-rated LSU team that should have lost to Miss State and Washington and a Georgia team that basically has no defense. They also have 8 home games and 4 away games. No wonder they get to the National Championship game. Try playing a USC or Ohio State or Oklahoma during the regular season. I think the AD is scared to schedule a tough away game because he knows the way to the NC game is by playing nothing but cream-puffs. What a freakin joke.

FYI....Tebow will never make it in the pros. I guarantee it. He's game is built around the cream-puffs they play every year. I also guarantee he will not be chosen in the top 2 rounds. He will not be able to run in the NFL without getting hurt. He is not fast like a Vick, and he doesn't have th touch like a Matt Ryan. He is way over-rated
