Gerhart, Stanford beat No. 24 Washington 34-14

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Washington’s momentum from its shocking upset of Southern California lasted as long as the opening kickoff.

Chris Owusu returned the opening kick 91 yards for a touchdown and Toby Gerhart ran for a career-high 200 yards and a score to help Stanford spoil No. 24 Washington’s first game as a ranked team in six years with a 34-14 victory Saturday night.

Andrew Luck added a 9-yard quarterback keeper for a score and Delano Howell intercepted two passes for the Cardinal (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10), who opened the conference season with consecutive wins for the first time since Tyrone Willingham’s last year on The Farm in 2001.

The Huskies (2-2, 1-1) were riding high coming into the game. Their 16-13 win over No. 3 USC last week put them in the AP poll for the first time since October 2003. But they couldn’t follow it up against Stanford, losing for the third time in four years to the Cardinal.

This marked Stanford’s second win in its last 23 games against ranked teams, with the only other one in that span coming at No. 2 Southern California two years ago. The Cardinal hadn’t beaten a ranked team at home since 2001 against UCLA.

Jake Locker went 16-for-31 for 190 yards and turned the ball over three times after playing almost flawlessly last week against the Trojans when he led the game-winning drive in the final minutes.

The Huskies defense had no answer for Gerhart, who suffered a concussion last year against Washington. Gerhart ran through Washington defenders all game in the best performance of his career. He topped the 100-yard mark early in the second quarter and passed his previous high of 148 yards against San Jose State last year in the third quarter.

With Luck struggling to get the ball to his wideouts, Stanford relied heavily on the run. The strategy paid off as the Cardinal gained 321 yards on the ground. Luck was 7 for 14 for 103 yards, with only one completion to a wide receiver. His touchdown run on a perfectly executed fake gave the Cardinal a 34-14 lead and started the chants of “Overrated!” from the Cardinal crowd.

Owusu opened the game with a kickoff return touchdown for a second straight week, following his 94-yarder last week against San Jose State with the 91-yarder to stun the Huskies. It’s his third kickoff return for a score this season, tying the Pac-10 record held by Southern California Anthony Davis (1974) and UCLA’s Matthew Slater (2007).

The teams then traded turnovers on the next four possessions, with an odd one allowing Washington to tie the score. Luck scrambled on third down, and as he got near the line of scrimmage, he flipped the ball to tight end Jim Dray. The pass went backward for a lateral and Justin Glenn picked it up for the Huskies. Glenn didn’t run and until he realized that the officials hadn’t blown the play dead. He then ran 51 yards for the game-tying score as Stanford’s players were unaware of what happened.

Gerhart ran for a 60-yard score on the next play from scrimmage for his longest career run, giving Stanford the lead for good.

    Either USC really isn't near the team they've been in the past, and that made Wash(ed Up) look great by beating them, OR Wash got so very lucky and that win didn't show what a average team they really are. In my opinion, they lost to Stanford, they shouldn't even be ranked in the top 25 this week. I'm sure they won't stay there much longer. bye bye, be better next year or close the program down.

    ta ta, enjoy life ..... will never read one of your posts again. you lost the right.

    marxman .... you are completely full of sh*t. i LIVE in Los Angeles ..... and there was not one OUNCE of doubt surrounding the Sarkisian hire. when you said "many of us here in LA were puzzled by the hire" .... hahaha .... you mean you and your roommates ? show me ONE article from the LA Times that doubts the hire. show me ONE article from the Daily News that doubts the hire ..... show me ONE podcast of ANY talk radio show that doubted the hire. no need to make things up dude. you are full of sh*t.

    yeah ..... what a horrible coach Sarkisian is ...... he took an 0-12 team and first game out of the gate gave the #4 team in the country ALL they could handle ..... then in the third game he beat your sorry ass Trojans. you are clearly a moron ..... you resort to lying and making things up to make your point. guess you didnt know i live in Los Angeles and would immediately know your claim of "many of us here in LA were puzzled by the hire" as being PURE HORSESH*T. a lie.

    i will wait for the link to a podcst or newspaper article that reflects your claim ...... hilarious ...... and pathetic. have to LIE to try to make your point. hahahahaha.

    16-13 ..... how does that taste ??????? your sorry ass Trojans have ZERO chance at winning the national championship this season ..... it was a nice run, but it is coming to an end. the tide is turning in the Pac. USCs offense couldnt fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

    @Dawgmeat, comment #5..

    [ "David ..... you mean like how Stanford laid to wood to juggernaut Wake Forest ?????? Stanford has beaten ..... who ?????????? this season ??? mighty arrogant for a team whose best victory came against Washington St. if youre going to dream .... dream big, i guess. Stanford isnt exactly in USC or LSUs class ..... and Washington outplayed both of them.

    Washington - 38
    Stanford - 14 "]

    @mgm, #100..

    Stanford is a decent team being built around a solid foundation.. not so sure about UW tho.. Sarkisian is NOT that great of a coach and many of us down here in LA were puzzled as to how he came up on a head coaching job (especially at UW)..

    ..go ahead and count out UCLA on having any chance at the title (they resemble USC - dominant D, but no O).. if they are true to their M.O., then they'll end up w/ about 5 or 6 losses.. they look decent by DEFAULT, since they have yet to play in conference).. so let's give them some time..

    ..as a TROJAN fan, the only team that scares me as of now is OREGON, for the simple fact that the game will be AT oregon and they have a QB (Masoli) that can run - history shows SC has trouble trying to stop that type QB..

    Let me see - WSU lost to the mighty USC by 21. And the UW lost to lowly Stanford by 20. That means that WSU should win over UW in the Apple Cup to end the season for both. Go Cougars, the Best Division II school in the Pac 10!

    After the SC/Ohio State game, I said SC looked vulnerable this year. Then they went and lost to Washington. Last week I said that it was premature for Washington to be ranked just because they beat SC, cause no one rebuilds in one year. Looks like I was right again.

    This week I'm saying don't read too much into Stanford's win over Washington. Just because they beat Washington, and Washington beat SC, does not mean that ... And how about Oregon putting a beating on Cal? This is the most interesting PAC10 season I've seen in a very long time. No telling who will end up with the crown, but I wouldn't count out the Ducks or (shock) the Bruins. From what I've seen of the play on the field those are the two teams that seem to most have their act together, despite injuries, young players, etc. Watch and wait, see if I'm right again.

    Stanford is going to be pretty good this year. I still put the Dawgs in a bowl game. They'll win 6 or 7. People are forgetting that Husky Stadium is a tough place for visitors to play, and that is going to bring some wins to Montlake. Woof!

    richard .... i dont think it was USC ...... i think it had more to do with the Huskies going on the road for the first time and also Stanford doesnt suck. theyre a pretty good team. Huskies looked damned good against LSU and Idaho as well. just never looked in synch today. their RB killed us. its all good ..... like i said before .... im very pleased to see how different these Huskies play compared to last season. even tonight .... when they looked their worst, they still looked a lot better than they did at their best last year.

    Dwagmeat---#85----Being a USC fan, I have seen this phenomenon over and over again---too many times, to tell you the truth! An up and coming team playing on its home turf would get sky-high when they play USC
    and win then lose their next game to an average team on the road. Dwagmeat, why don't your Huskies
    pretend every team they play is wearing cardinal and gold? FIGHT ON FOR USC

    yes Jeff .... its funny all these guys trying to give me a hard time over this loss .... i said before the season even started to keep an eye on Stanford .... theyve got quite a program up there. all these Cal fans are pathetic ..... they have all gone into hiding. Washington gets their ass kicked and im here .... i give Stanford respect and tip my cap. im not a girl like these Cal fans .... i learned long ago its MUCH better to get in and take it then hide and take it a week later. after we beat Notre Dame next week .... we will be 3-2 with the two Arizona schools coming up. win those three games .... and i like our chances at a bowl game.
