Barkley’s long TD throws lead No. 12 USC past WSU

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Matt Barkley’s bruised right shoulder performed just about as well as Southern California’s entire offense. It was far from perfect, yet plenty good enough to beat Washington State.

Barkley threw two long touchdown passes in 9 seconds during the first quarter on the way to 247 yards passing, and No. 12 USC rebounded from its latest upset loss with a 27-6 victory Saturday night.

Joe McKnight and Stafon Johnson rushed for scores for the Trojans (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10), whose national title hopes were seriously dampened by last week’s 16-13 loss at Washington. USC’s offense still showed many of the problems exposed last week in Seattle, even with Barkley’s return from an injury that’s not fully healed.

“I knew I was going to play through whatever pain there was,” Barkley said. “It felt good enough to get the job done.”

The Trojans’ formidable defense forced three turnovers in the second half and held the rebuilding Cougars (1-3, 0-2) scoreless until Dwight Tardy’s TD run with 22 seconds left.

Barkley, the freshman who led USC’s game-winning drive against Ohio State two weeks ago, looked healthy in his third career start after missing last week’s loss. He went 13 for 22 with a handful of sharp downfield throws to Damian Williams, who had five catches for 100 yards.

“When I had to gun it, I did,” Barkley said. “It hurt, but whatever. It’s football.”

USC scored three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes, with Barkley throwing a 29-yard TD pass to Brice Butler and a 57-yarder to Williams on consecutive plays. Kicker Jacob Harfman adroitly recovered his own onside kick in between.

But Washington State suffered nothing close to the embarrassment of last season’s 69-0 loss to the Trojans. The Cougars defense even twice stopped the USC offense on fourth down near the goal line in the second half, preventing a blowout.

“It’s good to win, but we’ve got a lot of work to do,” coach Pete Carroll said. “It was just not the satisfying kind of win that we like to have. We had so many situations where we made it so hard on ourselves.”

Freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel took over for Marshall Lobbestael in the second quarter and immediately led a 19-play drive for the Cougars, who dropped to 3-14 in coach Paul Wulff’s second season. Tuel got all but 5 of his 130 yards passing in the fourth quarter, when he led a 13-play scoring drive.

USC’s trip to Berkeley next week lost much of its luster with No. 6 California’s loss at Oregon, but now the Trojans and Golden Bears will be playing to avoid near-elimination from the conference title race.

McKnight finished a three-play drive by scoring just 2:36 into the first quarter, in which USC outgained Washington State 195-13.

Early in USC’s third drive, Barkley threw a beautiful fade to Butler, his talented fellow freshman. Congdon then pooched his kick and fell on it before the Cougars knew what happened, and Barkley promptly hooked up with Williams over the middle for a rambling score.

Barkley even took a mean hit while releasing the ball, but pointed his hands skyward in excitement while flat on his back.

Tuel, a Fresno high school product, nearly redshirted this season before the coaching staff became impressed with how quickly he picked up their offense. The mobile freshman replaced the 2-for-9 Lobbestael, who himself took over for Kevin Lopina last week, and immediately led the Cougars on a clock-consuming 58-yard drive over the final 8:35 of the first half.

But Nico Grasu missed a 34-yard field goal at the halftime whistle, visibly deflating the Cougars.

USC gambled on a backbreaking score on fourth down from the Cougars 2 on its opening drive of the second half, but tight end Rhett Ellison dropped a pass that hit him between the numbers.

Trojans defensive end Devon Kennard forced and recovered a fumble deep in Cougars territory on the last play of the third quarter to set up Johnson’s 6-yard TD run.

This love for USC is an F'n joke already, yes they have had great teams the past few years. How long is there name going to keep them in the title hunt? They beat the worst team in the Pac10 at home and they're back in the title picture? Did any of the voters see what the mighty Washington did this week, a week after beating USC?

Michael H. #27- Your Tide never plays Ohio State, Notre Lame or anybody else respectable in non-conference play. The only so-called "cupcake" USC plays is San Jose State and, perhaps, Washington
State! Congratulations to your Tide for beating Arkansas and good luck next week
    GOD BLESS

P.S. Do you know there are two guys named "Richard S" who post to you? Do you know the difference?

Unfortunately, I missed yesterday's game. I expected USC to win, though not by an huge margin.
    My guess was correct.
Compare the games against OSU &WA St. last year to this year's games, and it is perfectly clear that this will not be any easy season. Connor is correct-The Trojans are at their weakest point in eight years. Also, I agree with everyone who thinks the ranking system is ridiculous.
Pete Carroll isn't performing fellatio on anyone to improve USC's rank. However, it would not be surprising if someone offered to service him in exchange for answers to questions such as "How do you coach and recruit so many good football players?" "Why did your team have 7 consecutive 11-1 seasons?" "Why have 53 players you coached been 1rst & 2nd round NFL draftees?"
What some describe as over-dramatizing is a different view of his basic rule: play every game as if it were a championship. Trojan pride is pride of accomplishment
Has anyone else noticed that last week NOT ONE player on USC's team mentioned that 11 star players left in the Spring NFL draft, four players were out with injuries, and that WA's losing streak was broken AFTER a former USC coach became their head coach? Or that McKnight, Johnson, etc. blamed themselves, not the coach? They took the loss like men. Men of Troy, to be precise. A small win after a small defeat means that it's back to boot camp.
Can't wait to see USC beat Cal. I have friends from childhood and/or highschool who went to top-tier
colleges-Yale, Boston University, UCLA, Berkeley,Stanford,Ann Arbor,Notre Dame,Duke, UVA-all of which are outstanding universities in one area or another. Rivalry didn't intrude upon friendship.
I despise Berkeley because its staff , faculty, students, and alumni are insufferably arrogant, rude, condescending, and prone to unprovoked nasty remarks.Five minutes after a UC Berkeley grad is introduced to someone, he will announce that he went there. Eventually, he'll ask the other person which university he attended, laugh, and then launch into a monologue denoucing other universities. Part three of the monologue is a direct attack on the other person's intelligence-surely anyone who did not attend Berkely can barely keep his coloring inside the lines. THEY are the spoiled children, the legends in their own minds, the people who feel entitled to say or do anything they chose to the poor semi-retarded souls they meet-God help anyone who has a Cal grad for a boss.

CONNOR: Hell no, ND won't trample SC, and hell yes, chicks at USC don't believe beauty and brains are mutually exclusive. I bet the reason there is not a Homecoming Queen is because that campus is like a beach on the Italian Rivera-hotties as far as the eye can see. (But not topless.)
MICHAEL M: my mother has been a USC fan since she was 16. 30 years later, she was the belle of the ball at Freshman Orientation week.
TOMUSA, he's probably swigging imported mineral water and whistling "California Girls" 4x per day. He'll be the first college athlete busted for using Viagra instead of steroids.LMAO!
BIGGUY: Talk, talk, talk. Is that why USC had 7 consecutive 11-1 seasons, 3-1 at The Rosebowl.one national cahmpionship, Heisman Trophy winners Reggie Bush & Matt Leinert AND sent 53 players to the NFL in 8 years?

USC will be fine...son...please. Do I have to school you fools? Have any of you watched college football the last 7+ years? Let me remind you...USC has an unprecedented 7 straight BCS bids, 7 straight 11-win seasons and 7 conference championships in a row!! By the end of the year USC will be in talks for another national champioship becasue they prove it on the field! The offense will get better each week...and the defence is scary good. Their D will keep them in any game. The only reason they lost last week was because of injuries..its football...it happens. We actually schedule touch pre-conference games where our players have to actually compete and may get hurt...I know this sounds crazy to all you Florida fans.

AKAOPIE04 #35 Because they have the best talent in the country. I'm guessing by the hillbilly name you're and SEC fan. They've won 7 consecutive Pac 10 titles. The Pac 10 was 6-0 in the bowls last year. The SEC is AFRAID to even play Pac 10 teams. UCLA, a weaker Pac 10 team has beaten TENN. two years running. USC has 11 national titles. How many does the hillbilly outfit you root for have? You're a cretin. I'll also throw out the fact that USC is a top 25 ACADEMIC insitution. Where does your hillbilly school rank in the rankings that matter? USC is also 26-7 against the AP top 25 in the past 8 years. Maybe the SEC should stop scheduling 1-AA teams for its non-conference games. How does the team you root for rate? Now instead of just throwing out keyboard epithets, show us you actually KNOW SOMETHING!! Any douche can sit at a keyboard and hit keys.

All you haters can just keep hateing on USC. Hey Couger fan. A win is a win. It doesn't matter is you win by 50 plus points or by 1 point. USC still got the W and thats what counts. Hey Irsh fan seriously, I don't see the Irsh beating USC. The game will be a close one, but USC still will get the W. But the main game this week is CAL. Got to take one game at a time. CAL is decent football team. All USC needs to do is stop Beast and make Cal throw it. USC will win.

This might be a rough year for us. This team doesn't have the step-on-their throat mentality that our teams have had the last few years. Plus we really need to expand the play calling. Maybe losing RoJo is hurting us more than we realized. Gonna keep my fingers crossed for the year.

Look I am a USC fan, but even i can smell the mess that is heading our way. For one, USC never opens up the playbook until the last game of the season. This crappy offense isn't going to cut it period, run to the right, run to the left, pitch to the left, pitch to the right! WOW, I am truly amazed by the complexity!!!! Anyways, Our QB has one to two years to become dominant. As for the back up, I understand Corp had one bad game, but come on. Look, last week's game was under un-USC Southern California weather conditions. It needs to be perfect weather for USC to run their offense well. Notice I didn't say great because they will not run a great offense all year. I don't care how much of a die hard USC fan you are. Put them against the top 6 teams in the country, and i bet they go 2 for 6, and I'm being very giving at that. Florida, Alabama, Texas, LSU and heck even Boise St., and he biggest chockers of them all Oklahoma would wipe their asses with us. Bottom line it's the truth. Fresman QB, really he can really lead the way? Get outa here....Im a realist, and I don't live in fantasy land. GO USC, GO PAC-10 football and pass, pass, run even if you fail. Playing it safe and conservitive wont get us into the big game this year. OPEN UP THE PLAYBOOK!!!!

How can the Coaches rank USC over OU? USC has not been impressive except against SJS. I supposed after OU beats Miami on the road and then Baylor and Texas OU will be ranked 2nd.
