CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP)—Nick Foles passed for 254 yards and three touchdowns in his first start and the Arizona Wildcats shrugged off the loss of leading rusher Nic Grigsby to beat Oregon State 37-32 Saturday in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

Making his first start as a college quarterback, Foles was patient and precise in directing the Wildcats’ spread offense, which carved up Oregon State’s inexperienced secondary.

James Rodgers had eight catches for 119 yards for the Beavers. Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns and also caught 13 passes for 70 yards. Sean Canfield was 31-of-47 for 303 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked five times.

The Beavers (2-2) fell behind 28-17 in the third quarter and had three chances for a winning drive. Starting at their own 3 with just over three minutes left in the game, the Beavers completed three passes, but Canfield was picked off by Devin Ross.

Arizona (3-1) went three-and-out, but punter Keeyan Crier pinned Oregon State to its 2, and the Beaver offensive line wilted. On the first play, Canfield was dumped in the end zone for a safety. The Beavers recovered the on-side kick, but Canfield was sacked twice more to end the game.

The Beavers are 109th in the country in passing defense.

Foles, the 6-foot-5 sophomore with a big arm, completed 25 of 34 passes and ran an efficient and effective offense even though Grigsby was lost to a shoulder injury after just one carry and backup tailback Keolo Antolin was slowed by a leg injury. In their absence, redshirt freshman Greg Nwoko had 76 receiving and 44 yards rushing.

Foles, who replaced Matt Scott as the starter this week, started out strong, coolly completing five of his first seven passes on deliberate 15-play, 71-yard scoring drive capped with a 2-yard strike to Delashaun Dean.

The Beavers tied up the game with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Canfield to Damola Adeniji and led 17-14 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats took the lead in the third after Trevin Wade intercepted Canfield’s pass, setting up Foles’ 1-yard TD run. Foles also connected with Nwoko for a 52-yard reception and found Juron Crier for a 3-yard touchdown pass four plays later.

Jacquizz Rodgers scored on a three-yard run and James Rodgers ran in the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 28-25.

But starting the drive at the Beaver 45, Foles engineered a five-play drive and found Terrell Turner wide open in the end zone.

Canfield threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Nichols that got the Beavers within 35-32.

Four of the last six meeting between the two teams have been decided by seven points or less.

Dan Hawkins made a mistake. He like Dirk K should have stayed in Boise! In regard to Dan H I understand he is going to get canned @ the end of the season. How many coachs have won 4 Bowl games in a row? Nick Saban, No! Jim Tressel,? Mike Riley Yes! In regard to Stoops he has done a hell of a job @ a non football school in AZ. His brother Bob won A National Championship with John Blakes talent. Since then Zilch! Bob could end up playing his brother in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, this December. Bob could lose 3 more games. Tech, Texas, and Okie State, Plus he has to Deal with A much improved K-State Team @ Home!

#10, we had a shot at Dan Hawkins who I'd rather see in Corvallis. Once upon a time Chris Peterson's name was also mentioned. I'd gladly take either one of them. Why does Riley seem to ruin QBs? D.A. looked like a bum with a big arm, then goes to the ProBowl once someone finally coaches him. Matt Moore can't get PT at UCLA so he transfers to OSU and looks mediocre at best. Now he's on an NFL roster. I swear to God if by some inverse dimension Canfield makes it to an NFL roster, Riley should be forced to step down the very next day. We have probably the most talented RB/WR duo but through playcalling and a piss poor line and QB play we're squandering what should be 10 win seasons. We'll be lucky to pick up two wins in coference this year.

#1 Berzirk, you're an idiot. If you can name me a better coach than Mike Riley who will agree to coach the Beaver football team, be my guest.

Lay off of #3. I've eased back from my stance but I used to email the AD almost weekly to try and get Stoops fired. I AM glad I didn't get my wish but it's still obvious to me Stoops isn't that good a coach. Taking a knee on first down after Doss's interception was a blatantly bone-headed move. That said, we won and Stoops can learn from that and improve. I do think this team could potentially vie for the Pac-10 title this year in such a wide open conference.

Fire the coach after UA finally goes and wins a bowl game. Then they start 3-1, with a nice road win against a good Beaver team. Makes allot of sense #3. Or, maybe we should let the guy continue to build this team into something special.

Congrats to the Cats, who as abcforme pointed out showed some depth in their stronger areas. I would have liked a better showing at Iowa to be won over, but Gronkowski being a late scratch and then lost for the season was devastating to the offense. Stoops should have tried the 1-2 of Scott & Foles during the game to possibly throw off the Hawkeyes, but here we are. He is the coach not me, this team will get better over time on both sides of the ball, so good start most importantly (ASWHO couldn't!) WINNING ON THE ROAD! Impressive as he seems to do well in the northwest, so keep it up as we head to Washington soon and BEAR DOWN folks!

You @#$% about Stoops #3 and all he is done is assemble a team that won with its 3rd string running back, 3 starters on the O-line hurt and 2 Defensive starters out. The man has put together a team that finally has depth and all you can do is @#$%. When was the last time the Cats were 3 - 1 against this type of schedule. Do us all a favor and go away. Either get behind what the man has built from nothing or the the f##k away. What a joke you are. The offiviating cost Arizona 8 points tonight, on the road and all you can do is grip about the coach? Some fan you are?

Sweet win for the 'Cats. Hopefully, Scott will sit the bench for a while now. He looked horrible last week vs. Iowa.

Ready for Mike Riley to go elsewhere. Probably the nicest guy in football, but enough is enough.
