Oregon upsets No. 6 California 42-3

EUGENE, Ore. (AP)—To Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, taking criticism is part of the job. So is disproving it.

Masoli answered his naysayers by throwing for 253 yards and three touchdowns in Oregon’s 42-3 upset of sixth-ranked California on Saturday.

He completed 21 of 25 passes for the Ducks (3-1), who had 524 yards in total offense and buried any resemblance to the Oregon team that fell so dramatically to Boise State in a nationally televised season opener.

“There’s always critics—and it always falls on the quarterback,” Masoli said. “You try not to think about it, because nobody on the outside really has anything to do with it.”

Tailback Jahvid Best ran for just 55 yards for the Golden Bears (3-1), who had 206 yards in total offense—less than half their average. Widely considered a top Heisman contender, Best went into the game ranked third in the nation with an average of 137.33 yards on the ground.

It was Cal’s most lopsided loss under coach Jeff Tedford—Oregon’s former offensive coordinator—and worst since 55-14 to USC in 2001.

Oregon tight end Ed Dickson had 11 catches for a career-best 148 yards. He caught all three of Masoli’s scoring passes.

“On offense the sky’s the limit for us,” Masoli said with confidence. “We’re the only ones who can hurt us. These last couple of weeks we’ve been in a funk, but today we moved past that.”

Cal scored on Vince D’Amato’s 47-yard field goal early after Oregon fumbled on its opening kickoff return.

The Golden Bears would not score again.

Oregon tied it with Morgan Flint’s 30-yard field goal. Masoli completed five passes on the scoring drive—surpassing the four completions he had last weekend in Oregon’s 31-24 victory over then-No. 18 Utah.

Despite the win, Masoli was widely criticized for his performance and some fans suggested the Ducks go with backup Nate Costa against Cal. Oregon first-year coach Chip Kelly was steadfast in support of Masoli.

His first touchdown pass of the season was a 26-yard strike to Dickson that opened the second quarter. Masoli then tossed to Flint, who scampered into the end zone for the conversion to put the Ducks up 11-3.

“He proved that he can play,” Dickson said of Masoli. “He proved that he can throw the ball.”

After D’Amato missed a 43-yard attempt, Oregon pushed its lead to 18-3 on Remene Alston’s 1-yard TD dive. LaMichael James ran for a 4-yard touchdown just before halftime to make it 25-3.

James is among a trio of backs to whom Oregon has looked since LeGarrette Blount was suspended for punching a Boise State player in the aftermath of the opener. Blount is out for the season, but he is allowed to practice and this week wore Best’s No. 4 jersey on the practice squad.

James finished with 21 carries for 118 yards.

In the third quarter, Dickson caught scoring passes of nine and 36 yards from Masoli as Oregon went up 39-3. Ironically, fans who called for Costa got their wish when Masoli left the game early in the fourth quarter.

Flint added a 42-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, who went to high school in Beaverton, Ore., completed 12 of 31 passes for 123 yards. He was replaced in the fourth quarter by redshirt freshman backup Beau Sweeney.

“He’s disappointed, obviously,” Tedford said about best. “Everybody is, everybody’s disappointed when you don’t play well like that when we invest so much time and energy into what’s going on. It doesn’t feel good.”

Last weekend Best tied a Pac-10 record with five rushing touchdowns to lead the Golden Bears to a 35-21 victory at Minnesota, for which he earned Pac-10 player of the week honors.

But Oregon was able to shut him and the rest of Cal’s running game down. The Golden Bears had just 77 yards on the ground.

“Everybody kept asking, `What are you going to do about Best?’ If he can’t get past the line of scrimmage, we have nothing to worry about. That was our mentality,” Oregon defensive tackle Brandon Bair said. “We were going to come in here and hit him with all we’ve got. We know we have the talent, the speed, the ability to stop anybody.”

Cal was averaging 488.7 yards in total offense going into the game to rank 11th nationally, and gaining 250.33 yards on the ground.

Cal hosts USC next week. Oregon hosts Washington State to conclude a four-game homestand.

The Ducks were wearing throwback uniforms from the late 90s, featuring yellow helmets with an entwined UO.

The BCS is a complete joke. When will we crown the real champion, the one who earns it on the field and not in the board room? We must somehow rise up in an organized fashion to trample the four piece suits and demand a playoff. By the way, does BCS stand for Biggest Con Stays?????

Very disappointed with the fight Cal put up saturday verse Oregon but glad my cousin Jamere Hollands and his team won. However, I'm a Bear and they will have trouble with SC this weekend. Is it me or is Cal always in a rebuilding year. For example, at the QB position Kevein Riley replaced Nate Longshore which is a slight upgrade however Aaron Rodgers replaced Kyle Boller result great upgrade. So, who is next to replace Riley can't win the Big 1 w/o a Big time QB. Riley showed me no heart at Oregon and he is from there if he couldn't get it done verse a mediocre Oregeon D then whats gonna happen when he faces SC D. 1 win in the last 8 years for Teddy facing Pete come on Cal make some adjustments and get'er done. Go Bears

Crowd factor and a bus ride - not good chemistry for Cal to do well. Riley looked uncomfortable, all day. Game with USC will be much closer. Riley needs to be less obvious and more on target to win. He looked much better in his first game a couple of years ago, then what we've seen with him, this year. The D didn't stand a chance, since they were on the field most of the game. The QB can't blame WR corps, if balls are uncatchable. Bring the throws in more; stop going for hail mary's all the time.

i would hope all the top teams lose at least two games, and they begin to realize the BCS is meaningless crap. of course Florida plays jv squads half the time The joke is ranking them in the top ten when they haven't beaten a ranked team.

i have to agree the Ducks have faced a tough schedule and have done pretty well. My take on the rankings is every voter should submit their picks for every game each week too. Then THEY should have their own personal ranking based on how many games they pick right. Then when they vote for the rankings, their votes should be weighted. The guy who picks the best has a vote that counts for 2.0. The guy that is the worst has his vote counted at .50. That way ,for instance, all the SEC yokels that picked Tennessee over UCLA two years in a row, and were wrong, will have to pay for their regional bias.

most of these sad posts seem to not be about football but to stroke a deprived ego.
let me make a few points to ponder, agree or not.
    1. booting the bad seed for the year changed the character of the ducks on the field for the better.
    2. masoli did not improve, neither did the running backs. the offensive line is jelling. it shows. masoli is no dixon
3 those of you pac 10 insulter types check yer facts, when did usc last lose a non conference non bowl game.
    4. ask sec and big 10 coaches if they would like to visit autzen.
    5. lastly and most important, the reason pac ten teams upset each other so much is their complex game plans. most sec and big 10 coaches, and likely not a single sec or big 10 player could even read the duck playbooks.
review teams that play lsu for example that use mis direction, read offense, etc. they have great athletes physically, but are under schooled. they are easily confused.
look what an injury riddled duck team did in its last bowl game and understand, its not only about the beef.

Michael H. #336-- I hope you are right, my friend! I'm afraid next week might be a case of a good team
getting sky-high on its own turf infront of their own fans, all (most of them) rooting for their Bears to wIn. If
that happens, I will be disappointed but not surprised. As I told Dwagmeat, I have seen that movie before!
Apology accepted. Ihave heard almost every profane word in the book! But I never use them! Congtatulations on your Tide taking the Razorbacks in back of the wood-shed for a good, old-fashiooned
whipping! Good luck to them next week!!

I agree with jim the avid cal fan.......the bears are overated, this was their true real teat of the season and a mark of "f" proved that they should not even be considered for the top 25 much less the top 50 teams in the country.....sc will dominate next week and after that cal will be lucky to go .500. now comes the hard part, after the alums put up a hefty salary for tedford and the new stadium is a go with $250k psl seats for the next 40 years, i'm curious if the alums are going to start grumbling for a new coach ?! tedford should be embarrassed as the play calling was horrific, and the lack of emotion of the sideline reminded me of art shell coaching the raiders.......not a good visual !!!!!!

Jim -- #333 -- I'm sympathetic with your plight. I think it would be best for all concerned if Cal were to give up on football and focus on rugby or soccer or some other "sport" where it might have a chance of competing. If they did it now it would give Jahvid Best a chance to play at SC where his skills would be fully realized. As I'm sure you'll agree it's kind of a shame when really good athletes waste their time at Cal. (I also think it's a shame they had to cut down those perfectly beautiful Oak trees for the sake of an athletic facility -- yet another waste.)

I've been a Cal Bears fan since 1978, my freshman year at Cal. Unfortunately, this is a very familiar story. On the surface, Cal looks like a good team. When you drill down a little, there's not a lot of substance there. They should never have been ranked as high as they were in the pre-season. Every year I tell myself that I'm not going to get myself wrapped up with this team because it never ends well. Unfortunately, I did it again this year and, of course, the Bears' lack of talent was exposed by Oregon. I fear that Cal is going to get their heads handed to them by SC next Saturday and that will completely destroy the team for this season. I can see them maybe finishing at 500 in the Pac-10. Not much more than that.

Jaime B. #16---------Post #8 just sounds uneducated---he probably doesn't know anything about college
football except he was for Cal. Stand up now, Gurald, and accept your defeat like a man! You must eat crow now, like I had to two weeks ago vs. Washington, the only difference being I NEVER said my Trojans
would beat Dwagmeat's Huskkies and they might not defeat Oregon this week. Oregon fans might want to
learn from Cal fans that you should keep it zipped until, and if, the deal is done. Otherwise, you might end
up sounding like Gurald, a complete jerk knows nothing about college football!
