Clausen leads Notre Dame to 24-21 win over Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)—With the game on the line, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis put the game in the hands of his hobbled star.

Gimpy Jimmy Clausen completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph with 24.8 seconds to play, and Notre Dame rallied for a 24-21 win over Purdue on Saturday night.

Clausen, slowed by a turf toe injury on his right foot, split time with Dayne Crist. Though Crist directed two touchdown drives with the Wildcat offense in the first half, Clausen returned to the game when it got tight in the fourth quarter. Weis didn’t want Clausen to play in the second half, but he said there was no doubt who was going to finish if it got close.

“We started talking about it early in the fourth quarter, and he (Clausen) had started politicking before that,” Weis said. “He said that he felt fine and if the game got to the situation where we needed to put him in there, he said put him in there. I listened to him.”

Clausen said playing hurt was no big deal.

“That’s what the team expects me to do, that’s what I expect myself to do,” he said. “I think anyone on the team would have done the same exact thing.”

The Fighting Irish (3-1) took over trailing 21-17 with 3:41 to go. Clausen completed a 22-yard pass to Rudolph to move the ball to the Purdue 32, but a sack forced Notre Dame into a third-and-14. Clausen completed a 15-yard pass to Robby Parris for a first down. A 17-yarder to Golden Tate set up a first-and-goal at the 4. After three plays netted two yards, Clausen found Rudolph in the end zone on fourth down for the winner.

Clausen said Rudolph talked to him before the play.

“Kyle looked at me and said ‘Jimmy give me the ball,”’ Clausen said. “I said, ‘You better get open and catch the ball,’ and he made a big play. After that, I gave him a big hug and said all that work in the summertime out in California paid off.”

Clausen, the nation’s No. 2 passer, wasn’t himself. He completed 15 of 26 for 171 yards, and he threw his first interception of the season.

He found his rhythm in the final minutes.

“I think I just needed to stay loose,” he said.

It was the third straight Notre Dame game decided in the final minute. Kyle McCarthy had an interception at the 4-yard line with 57 seconds left to seal Notre Dame’s 33-30 win over Michigan State last week. A week earlier, Michigan’s Tate Forcier threw a 5-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining to beat the Irish 38-34.

“Last week, the defense made a play at the end of the game,” Weis said. “This week, the offense made a play at the end of the game. Would you like the game to be easier than that? Absolutely. But give me a close win any time of the week, I’ll take it.”

Notre Dame played without its leading rusher and receiver. Running back Armando Allen sat out with an injured right ankle and receiver Michael Floyd was knocked out for the season last week with a broken collarbone.

Joey Elliott passed for 289 yards and three touchdowns in his best game of the season for Purdue (1-3). Keith Smith caught 11 passes and tied a career high with 136 yards.

Purdue’s three losses are by a combined 12 points.

The Boilermakers (1-3) drove deep into Notre Dame territory late in the third quarter and began the fourth quarter trailing by 10 with the ball at the Notre Dame 15. Elliott completed a slant pass to Smith for a 3-yard touchdown, and the Boilermakers cut Notre Dame’s lead to 17-14.

Purdue got another chance with just under six minutes to play. Jaycen Taylor took a play-action fake out of the backfield, caught a pass in the flat from Elliott and raced untouched for a 38-yard touchdown that gave Purdue a 21-17 lead with just under four minutes to play.

Purdue didn’t deny the importance of the game, saying all week that the rivalry had special meaning. The Boilermakers wore all-black uniforms for the first time since Oct. 21, 2006 against Wisconsin and the “Purdue” in the end zones were painted black with a gold outline instead of gold with a black outline.

But Clausen sent the Purdue home fans disappointed.

“That was a very gutsy call,” Rudolph said. “I know he just wanted to be out there. He’s a competitor, and he wants to be out there at all times.”

If "icanmakeyouthink" is satisfied with ND's performance this year he's satisfied with sub-mediocrity in life. WOW - stunning how impressed you are with a sub-par ND team. Michigan is no big deal this year and USC is much weaker than previous years you under achiever.

Another lucky win for the fat slob and his losing irish...fortunately, the worthless domers from south bend are getting to the tough part of their schedule...probably 3-4 more losses and hopefully another wipeout of fatty fatty two by four from the ND sideline....Go anyone playing the overrated Irish.

#63, Jeffree K - you left out only passing deep on third and short. And to be more accurate, they have the dumbest coaching staff in football at any level not just college - maybe the dumbest coaching staff in any sport. I'm an alum and lifelong fan and I felt sick after watching that game handed to the Irish! Is it too late to get a real coach!?

Purdue has the dumbest coaching staff in college football.

Prevent defense in the final minute and timeout with 20 seconds left. WITH THE LEAD!!!!

Might as well bend over for the Irish. Man!!!

OK, I've been a life long fan of the Fighting Irish (me too, since Hanratty was QB) so here's my analysis 4 games into a 3-1 record.
    1) They beat Nevada convicingly BUT Nevada is is 0-4 and has lost to nobody teams .[ They lost to N.D., and we are not "nobody." In actual fact, they lost to a very good Missouri team last Saturday, against a QB that threw for 400+ yards. They have a good squad, very good coach, that has played better teams]
    2) They lost to a Michigan team who had to come from behind to beat Indiana [Michigan is 4-0 and rated 23, tell it to the pollsters, okay?]
    3) They barely hung on to beat Michigan St. who's 1-3 with a victory over mighty Montana St.[ And had beaten N.D. 6 straight times at South Bend, yet lost this time, that doesn't satisfy you, "Notre Dame fan"??]
    4) The had to come from behind to beat Purdue who lost to Northern Illinois last week.[Sorry we couldn't schedule them when they had a better record for you, but the schedule is made many years in advance, so WTF is your point?]

Question; NOW can we be done with Charlie Weis?[ yes, for heavens sake, let's get rid of him and the no talent N.D. 3-1 team] I'm sorry but these wins mean nothing. [And if we beat Washington this week, what will your complaint be, that they lost to Staford last week?] This team resembles nothing of the Lou Holtz era and not even the Dan Devine era.[I'll take the team just the way it is, with some tweaking on the defensive side.] Era's era was something spectacular as well.[That Ara, not Era] Charlie Weis is a pathetic joke as is Notre Dame's schedule and performance.[Yeah, one smackdown, two thrilling wins, and one thrilling loss, with bad officiating and two bad play calls in the 4th Q of the one loss sure is a "disappointing" performance...not. I'll be damn glad with a 9-3 record and a bowl game, especially with the best receiver in the country injured for the season. And yes, USC is a "pathetic" choice to schedule, as is the all-time NCAA Div. 1 leader in wins: Michigan.]

I see a very bright future, with great young talent only getting better and better, along with their coach.

But feel free to piss and moan about being 3-1. Should be 4-0, but only you are perfect.

Golden Tate is one of the best players i've seen in college football this year. the young man is a great asset to irish football. all the little irish fans were worried about them doubling golden with floyd out. i guess everyone forgot that he was recruited as a tailback. nice call charlie.

Has anyone wondered why the biggest ND haters (Big Ten fans), who now apparently are the most "intellectual" conference, are the same people that continually cry about ND not being in the Big Ten?! If you hate them so much, why keep crying about them not being in your conference? I think (PSU fans in particular) are just jealous that they stupidly joined a conference instead of reaping the benefits of being independent. Get over it.

    Heretic, how stupid are you?
First off, you are obviously not a football fan because no true football fan would be trying to make the argument that their conference is an intellectual conference, the true football fan would be talking football trash no matter what.
Second, you're argument is ridiculous. You say the Big Ten is an intellectual conference in the context of the implication that Notre Dame is not an intellectual institution. The Big Ten has some great institutions with great academic standards, but even the biggest Notre Dame hater can't credibly make the argument that Notre Dame isn't at the top of the list when it comes to academics and intellect.
It is not a superstitious institution and its not a cult. It's a University that was founded by the Catholic church which also happens to have a rich football history.
If you wanna be mad that Notre Dame came from behind and beat Purdue on the road, then go ahead and be mad. But instead of making ridiculous arguments that make you look like a complete moron, suck it up like an adult and get on with your like and enjoy the rest of the season.

#49 bdarrah3 - I totally agree with you. Purdue had it won and Danny Hope gave them an extra play. That was the dumbest piece of coaching I have ever seen. As a huge Purdue fan and alum I've watched my last Purdue game as long as that guy is coach. And I'm not one to go off on the coaching, but that was ridiculous! Remember when ND had the "Oust Foust" campaign? Purdue needs to start a "Hope is a Dope, Can Dan" campaign.

I hope that superstitious institute is never allowed to be part of the big 10. this conference is an academic one and letting the "dumbers" in would degrade the conference intellectually. supernatural institute should join a conference with just other religious asylums---there are enough of those around too. they could call it the "cult conference" which is what mind control is all about.

Remember one thing. Charlie Weiss is no Lou Holtz. Great coaches are not born overnight. I'm not saying Charlie Weiss is a great coach. Regardless of who the coach is. Notre Dame has some work to do to become that great team they once was.

I thought our back-up QB did an outstanding job! I also thought that CW would have put Clausen in for 1 series to see how he looked. But I'm not the coach. We need to get another receiver quick or it's pointless to go to Tate since he'll be double-teamed. Our TE's can work well too! Again, I felt that by putting the back-up in and having an offense geared for each was a smart move. And it also goes to show that Tate can run (afterburner)! Go IRISH!

Purdue's team got themselves in a position to win, even with ND knocking on the door. With 3rd down and no timeouts ND was scrambling to get one more play, then Purdue's Coach called a timeout. That gave ND TWO PLAYS and the game. Why could they ever give the opposition just what it needed to get their act together to run two plays - time. Purdue Coaches owe their team a big apology for blowing the victory which the TEAM had earned.

    @surfscoter2000,
I don't believe that we can count the times a team went into a "prevent" D and lost the game.
The ONLY thing this disastrous "prevent" D does is prevent them from winning.
I'm an Irish fan however, I have to agree that the Purdue coaches blew the game with that imbecilic D.

Purdue's coaches lost this for their team and I fell sorry for their players. First, Purdue played a prevent defense to let ND move quickly down the field, burning their last time out in the process. With 28 seconds left, the clock running, and facing a third a goal with a disorganized Irish scrambling to get lined up to spike the ball, the Purdue coaches call a timeout. That gave ND time to call two pass plays and win the game.

This loss is entirely on the not ready for prime time Purdue coaching staff.
