No. 13 Ohio State’s D has another shutout, 30-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Two years ago, Illinois frustrated top-ranked Ohio State in a stunning upset at Ohio Stadium.

The Buckeyes’ defense never gave Juice Williams and the Illini a chance to even start dreaming of another victory in their return to the Horseshoe.

Dan Herron slogged through a downpour for two touchdowns on Saturday and No. 13 Ohio State collected a second straight shutout for the first time in 13 years, beating the mistake-prone Illini 30-0.

“We want a mentality that we want to get to the ball, have at least five or six guys at the minimum there,” defensive lineman Doug Worthington said. “And we did a good job doing that today.”

With most of the game played in a soaking rain, the Buckeyes (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) relied on their defense and running game—failing to complete a pass in the opening half—to steamroll the Illini (1-2, 0-1).

“We wanted to lead with the run and mix in the pass had it been a beautiful day,” Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. “But you know that didn’t make sense with the circumstances. It was hard to throw the ball but I think it was even harder to catch it.”

And it was even harder to catch the Buckeyes when they ran.

Brandon Saine rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries and Herron had 75 on 14 attempts—scoring on runs of 4 and 2 yards—and the defense did the rest.

“I was just running through wide-open holes,” Saine marveled. “Come on— anyone could go through those holes.”

Williams, who engineered that 28-21 upset of Ohio State in 2007, and the offense was held to 170 yards.

“It’s like a nightmare,” Williams said of the offensive woes. “A nightmare from which you can’t wake up.”

Even when the Illini were able to move the ball, they frequently were stopped by penalties (eight for 71 yards) or turnovers (interceptions by Lawrence Wilson, Jermale Hines and Brian Rolle).

Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor misfired on both of his pass attempts in the first half but the Buckeyes still led 13-0. He ended up completing 8 of 13 passes for 82 yards with an interception, tossing a 3-yard TD toss to Dane Sanzenbacher long after the outcome had been decided with 1:18 left. Pryor also rushed for 59 yards on 11 attempts.

Aaron Pettrey kicked field goals of 50, 46 and 27 yards.

There were bad feelings between the teams early on. Before warmups Ohio State’s players massed atop the school logo at the 50 and traded taunts with the Illini, who ran right up to the Buckeyes. Coaches kept them separated and no punches were thrown. Two years ago, after the Illini had ruined the Buckeyes’ unbeaten season on their home field, a fight broke out in the center of the field when Buckeyes players thought the Illini were stomping on their Block O logo.

Ohio State, which beat Toledo 38-0 a week ago, had not posted consecutive shutouts since the second-ranked Buckeyes beat Minnesota 45-0 and Illinois 48-0 late in the 1996 season.

The Illini were in a helpful mood. Facemask and late-hit penalties extended an Ohio State drive that finished with Herron skirting left end for a 13-0 lead.

A 27-yard Illinois punt put the Buckeyes in business at the Illini 39 early in the third quarter and they covered that distance in five plays with Herron again punching it in.

“I’m more tired of saying it than you are of hearing it, but obviously we didn’t play once again the way we are capable,” Illini coach Ron Zook said. “Everyone’s written us off and that’s fine. I would too if I was in your shoes.”

Talk about nightmares: The Illini have lost their Big Ten opener 15 of the last 16 years.

Despite an 18-15 loss to Southern California two weeks earlier, the Buckeyes vowed that they’re back in the national title picture.

“We showed that we’re ready to bounce back after that loss to SC and we’re always looking forward, always trying to better ourselves,” linebacker Austin Spitler said. “Each week we’ve taken a step in the right direction and this is just another week.”

    Cory,
One thing that I do have to say is that I was rather impressed by the improvement of Indiana's offense. The triple option really worked quite well for them. I can really see a lot of improvement in their offense (rushing) and there defense. But I am not saying that Indiana will beat Ohio State. But they will at least make a bowl game which is a big improvement. Last year they were 3-9. On average they lost by 25 almost 26 points every time that they lost. This year they have a little bit harder schedule than last year starting out 3-1 is great for them. The haven't had that many winning seasons since Bill Lynch (47-68) has been the coach at Indiana. But lots of improvement. By the way Im a not a Indiana fan...

i said after the disaster in missouri that illinois would go 2 and 10. but after watching them yesterday and seeing the rest of the league play and knowing they finish up with cinncinati and fresno st. i am going to go with 1 and 10. this team is a train wreck with no clue on either side of the ball. the defense wasnt supposed to do much and there not. but the offense? they should just be thankful there not playing iowa and wisconsin this year. i hope juice is getting a degree in something other than football because he has no chance as a pro.no wonder jared fayson didnt get playing time at florida, would you throw him the ball ? he dropped 3 passes right in his hands. i will give cudos to ian thomas and friarson the 2 rookie lbs they did a pretty good job. when is bball starting?

hans must watch volleyball or wrestling because michigan (notice the correct spelling) just about lost to indiana. we will win the big ten with ease and most likely will be in and win the national championship because all of these so called great schools are falling apart against sorry teams. we play better when we don't get any respect, so keep on hating and we will keep winning with defense. GO BUCKS!!!

First of all I had to include the WAC because of what Utah did last year and what Boise State is doing this year. I love to watch college football in lieu of the Pros. I do not have a favorite team. I love great games and rivalries. But since it was brought up I would have to disagree with the SEC's soft conference. I would say the top three teams this week (2 SEC and 1 Big 12) could easily defeat any Big Ten team. And the games I have watched with Arkansas vs Georgia and Tennessee vs Florida, I would say Ohio State would have their hands full. It will not be a shutout. The Big Ten might have been a power back in the power mentality mode but with the speed and creativity of the other conferences, Ohio State and Penn State are behind the curve ball. Like the Michigan coach or not, he will bring the ACC style of play to the Big Ten and the winning will commence.

The teams you play are set-up years in advance so when OSU get a team like USC or Texas it is because they agreed to play several years before the game was scheduled. If you win or lose by 1, 10, or 20 should not matter when you are playing a team your equal. It should only matter if you play a team that is in a lower division such as 1AA, D3 and so on. These teams get ranked before the season even starts based on someones opinion. Thats how teams like ND gets ranked so high to start the year not because of who they beat. A playoff system changes all of that because you will have to win your games in the playoffs to move on and it will not matter who you beat or how many points you win by. Bowl game generate tons of money and allow sponsers to show case their products. Those sponsers provide millions of dollars and that is why they do not want a playoff system. Pure greed drives college football thats why you have guys like Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and some of these other average ball players win the Heisman trophy and go on to not have great pro careers while other players not even considered for the award have excellent pro careers. Hype rules colege football not substance.

92 - I think the rankings are also based on the strenght of the teams that you play. OSU has played one team in USC that seems to be heading for 3-4 loses this year. I never thought that I would see a OSU fan complain about the polls.

Think about what you just man, because with those powerhouses colorado state, new mexico, unlv, wyoming, and san diego state, o wait thats pretty much the whole conference. I guess I see how OSU would go 1-10 in this conference *sarcasm*

Post 89 your kidding right? The SEC? Lets see, two teams LSU and Florida thats it. The rest of the teams are not that good. They play teams like Hawaii, The Citadel,Georgia Southern, Wofford, Wyoming, Duke. The weakest teams in college football. Arkansas, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Mississippi St., Mississippi, South Carolina are some of the softest teams in college football and they don't play tough teams at all. Unless you want to count those phony games they play in the SEC when your so called top teams lose to them. History speaks for it self. The Big Ten and other conferences have been great since football got started and still are. And Big Ten football players have long and great NFL careers on teams all over the league. Until the SEC starts playing tough early out of conference games, I could care less what they do in bowel games because there should be a playoff system anyway.

Let's see, 4 top ten teams LOSE, including The Hurricanes. #7 LSU almost loses. If the AP keeps their stupid ways of ranking teams, that means that Miami will move up 3 spots because they are cuddly. OHIO State, who only loses to top-ranked teams and not dogs like the other top teams will drop to #17 for recording their 2nd straight shutout. LSU will be #3. Penn State will drop 15 spots, even though USC only dropped 7 last week. Notre Dame eeked out a 3 point win, that should move them up 12 spots. #1 Florida wins, So they automatically move up to Negative Number 1 since the AP already secretly gave them the championship. The BCS comittee voted late last night that any team playing against TEBOW must now play without a QB.

I'm proud to be a OSU fan and a fan of the state of Ohio. Michigan has nothing really to hang their hats on. The Red Wings? Is that the best they can do? That is so weak. This year Ohio has two top level college football teams and Michigan has none. Their pro teams suck too. The Lions are the first team to go 0-16 ever so I guess you have to look at baseball and hockey to have anything to talk about. Getting beat by Appalachian St. is enough to set your program back for the next ten years. No majior college football team gets beat by Appalachian St, except Michigan.

Ok, the mighty powerful Buckeyes had another solid win. Toledo last week and Illinois this week. They were defeated by a USC quarterback that played in high school last year. To prove you belong in the top 100, please play some real teams (SEC, ACC, Big 12, Mountain). I love the big ten because they don't play anyone but yet wind up high in the top 10 ranking because the great divisons knock each other off. If you want respect then you need to move into a conference that means something, but then your record would be 1-12. Hmmm, better stay in the Big Ten.

how can a michigan fan even talk @#$%? really? Ohio's defense has really impressed me lately. and if your gonna talk about pro teams Michiganers. Yes, Browns suck, but still better than a team that hasnt won a game in almost a year and a half (lions). Tigers have never done anything good with their lives. Cavs even without lebron could beat the pistons, and who gives a fuc* about hockey. no one. so relax michigan fans. Cleveland is cursed, but michigan is fuc*ed for life.......oh and lebron is gonna bring a championship to cleveland this year and that will break the curse
