Forcier leads No. 23 Michigan past Indiana late

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)—Tate Forcier seemed to have no trouble shrugging off an injured shoulder to throw another game-winning touchdown pass.

What really hurt was the celebration.

After Forcier threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Martavious Odoms with 2:29 left to give the 23rd-ranked Wolverines a 36-33 win over Indiana on Saturday, he got a congratulatory slap on the right shoulder.

Yeeeouch!

Forcier winced and twisted his body away, but by then, Michigan wouldn’t need him to do anything more than kneel the ball after Donvan Warren’s interception on Indiana’s next snap let Michigan (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) seal its fourth straight win

“It’s a bruised shoulder,” Forcier said, not specifying which one was hurt. “We’ll take a look at it and see what we have and we’ll go from there.”

The freshman quarterback led another fourth-quarter touchdown drive two weeks after his pass with 11 seconds left beat then-No. 18 Notre Dame.

He actually led two on Saturday, leaping for a go-ahead TD and a 2-point conversion to put Michigan ahead 29-26 with 9 minutes left. But Indiana immediately answered with Darius Willis’ 85-yard touchdown run to go back on top.

So Forcier had to do it again. He was hurt on the pivotal possession, but came back in time to connect with Odoms in the end zone on 3rd-and-7.

“We had a play called and checked into a different play,” Odoms said.

The hookup prevented Indiana from winning in Ann Arbor for the first time since 1967—before Bo Schembechler coached Michigan.

Instead, the Wolverines are 4-0 and rapidly putting the memories of last season’s dismal 3-9 effort behind them—though there were a few moments that resembled 2008.

Rich Rodriguez said earlier in the week he’d like the Wolverines to be good enough to play poorly and still win. He got his wish.

The Hoosiers (3-1, 0-1) had four go-ahead scores—including with 8:57 left on Willis’ long run—and easily outgained Michigan with 467 yards of offense.

“I thought about what a big win this would have been for our football team,” coach Bill Lynch said.

Forcier had one costly mistake, throwing an interception on an ill-advised pass after doing a 360-degree spin in the pocket. Fellow freshman quarterback Denard Robinson was stripped of the ball late in the second quarter, leading to a field goal that sent Indiana into halftime up 23-21.

Settling for field goals was costly for Indiana.

Nick Freeland tied a school record with four of them, but was wide left on a 42-yard kick early in the fourth quarter.

“That’s the big difference,” Lynch said. “But you’ve got to give Michigan’s defense some credit, they loaded up and kept us out of the end zone.”

After running for 69 yards in his first two games, Willis had 152 yards rushing and a score on 16 carries. Tandon Doss had five catches for 104 yards and Ben Chappell was 21 of 38 for 270 yards.

Carlos Brown turned one of Forcier’s short passes into a 61-yard score—a week after he ran for a 90-yard TD—and had a 41-yard score on the ground against Indiana. Brandon Minor had 50 yards rushing and a TD, and converted a third down with a run to allow Michigan to drain the clock.

That sealed the Wolverines’ perfect record heading into their first road game against Michigan State (1-3, 0-1), which is desperately hoping to salvage some pride in what has been a disappointing season.

“I’m leery of a rivalry game—every time,” said Rodriguez, who lost to the Spartans at home last year. “It doesn’t matter the records, it doesn’t matter the venue, it’s going to be intense.”

I would like to see the replay that you whiners must have seen. I have yet to se any conclusive simultaneous possession before Warren ended up on the ground with it. You can speculate and whine all you want but if there was any conclusive evidence it would have been overturned. Are you IU fans related to the golen dorks? Maybe it's in your water.

For you to say that Michigan hasn't won a big game since the Rose Bowl victory over Washington State and then later say that the Michigan/Ohio State game is a big game every year without recognizing that Michigan has won "the big game" three times since then is a bit ironic. I'm not saying that Michigan has been fantastic lately, just pointing out that they have won big games since the WS one. If one team in the big ten is known for choking in big games it is definitely Ohio State. That being said, Ohio State has owned us lately, hopefully that can change this year.

I am a Michigan fan. I was busy most of the day Saturday, and tuned in near the start of the 4th quarter, so I can't talk about the game before that.

I saw some very strong plays on both sides, with Michigan taking the lead, quickly losing it, and taking it again.

That pass should have been called as simultaneous possession, and been Indiana's ball. I don't think that determined the game, and that's why it made me sick when it was called an interception.
However, anybody watching the game will tell you the camera angle and view of the ball was TERRIBLE. There was no irrefutable evidence that it WASN'T in Warren's (Michigan player) possession. On the other hand, if it had been called simultaneous possession and challenged, there was also no irrefutable evidence that it WAS in Warren's possession. That's the part that gets to me. Yeah, the refs botched that call horribly, but TECHNICALLY they were in the right on the challenge. The whole thing just really made me feel like it was dirty, like they knew the call couldn't be overturned and that's why they called it that way.

We caught a break, and that helped seal the game (early). Indiana had their timeouts, Michigan also (correct me if I'm wrong on that). I would have rather seen the game played out to it's full potential than have to win like that, because I am sure the Wolverines would have pulled it off somehow anyway.

IU had three timeouts left with just over 2 minutes left in the game...as an IU Alum all I wanted was a fair chance to make a last drive against Michigan. I can handle that we might not have won..but the fact we had that chance to make a drive stolen by the refs really pisses me off..let the players play the game. The fact the refs still got it wrong after reviewing the play shows they were playing to the home crowd...the NCAA and the BCS is truly a corrupt system...one can even say it was corrupt before the BCS system..when the AP poll gave Florida St the National Championship over Notre Dame despite the Fact Notre Dame defeated Florida State head to head...if that isn't BS I don't know what is...

A win is a win, but you beat a mediocre team by the skin of your teeth. And you had to have a horrible call seal the deal for you! Not the first time a team has come into Michigan and got screwed by a questionable call. Now when you get screwed by a bad call don't start crying!

We pay those officials top $ baby! LOL

Seriously though, bad calls are part of football... we caught a break on that one. IU played a tough game. I'm a huge Michigan fans it's nice to be undefeated. I think we have a great offense that can score on anybody but we need to start stopping some teams defensivley. 4-0 though let's GO BLUE.... BEAT MSU!

ok seriously IU did it to themselves.......4 FG's in the redzone???? one of those a touchdown and they win the game....they ran up and down the field until they got to the redzone and then they would flop.....yes the interception could have gone both ways and the call was made and when they reviewed it they couldn't over turn it bc there was not a good camera angle to see if warren had it or the other guy(not sure on his name kinda forgot it)....but when you see the ball it looks as if warren has the ball in both of his arms with the other guy trying to take it from him....i thought they were going to give it to IU.....

and ND is so awesome running through the bottom half of the big ten and barely winning with there great offense.......

Still though, IU had to score. So it's not like that call won the game for Michigan. It just put the nail in the coffin.

    Hans,

Nobody is looking for a dissertation here, but your illiterate gibberish is for the most part incomprehensible. But I change my mind. I don't want you to stop. I want you to keep embarrassing all the UM fans, because obviously most of them deserve it for the lack of character they have displayed in this thread.

There is one acceptable response Michigan fans:

"Yes, we caught a break on that call. IU played right with us and we were lucky to win, but I'm very happy we did."

That's it. That's what someone with a shred or honor would say, and I would hope at least a few of you would man up and say something like that.

    daveand17,

you're joining the ranks of ridiculous Michigan homers here. Exactly how are you trying to parse the definition of "big game" in order to argue that Michigan aren't total choke artists?

You claim that the last big game Michigan won was the third most important bowl game played by the BigTen following the 2007 season, but OSU hasn't won a big game since their National Championship win. Wouldn't you consider OSU beating Michigan on November 17, 2007 for the right to go to the National Championship game (and thereby also bumping Michigan to the Cap One Bowl and out of contention for a BCS game invite) a big win?

And since you have determined that the CapOne bowl is a 'big win,' wouldn't you maybe, just maybe, consider the BCS Bowl games that OSU has won since they beat Miami "big wins?" At least as big as Michigan's Cap One Bowl win?

And just to top off your little fantasy about how these things work, Florida lead the game with six minutes left. Exactly how is that 'dominating the whole game?'

Seriously, if you want to argue that Michigan is better at winning the big game, maybe you should try winning The Game. In order for OSU to blow it in the Championship game, they have to win a little get together known as The Game, and they have done so five years in a row. The Game is a "big game" each and every year.

You know, I can't stand either team. In fact I hate IU too (based on basketball more than anything), but Michigan fans are really revealing themselves to be the biggest douchebags with the most undeserved sense of entitlement I've ever seen in sports.

I am sorry, you cannot give up 36 points to another team and then say you got robbed by the refs. How about a stop on defense or scoring a touchdown in the red zone instead of settling for 4 field goals. Lots of bad calls in the game on both side, but the score is the score. Sorry, stop whining and just admit MICHIGAN won the game

j g, I can can bring up phantom TDs scored against Michigan in big games. USC in the Rose bowl (probably cost them the NC ), ND under Willingham. But you are a moron. That is easily determined. I watched the replay of the interception. No clear pic of the play at all. Yet you whining dorks think your opinion and interpretation of the rule book is superior to that of the replay officials. Just like the ND win, ND dorks whine about the calls that cost them points and yardage. I guess if ND has a good play , the refs should swallow the whistle. Losers, whiners, and posers.

J G, The last time Michigan won a big game was two years ago on New Years Day. Remember, beating Florida in the state of Florida against Tebow (He won the Heisman that year). They dominated the whole game, and there were no controversial calls. The last time OSU won a big game...beating Miami for the National Championship. That game had an ending that was surrounded by controversy.

Does everyone like how this works? People point out the lousy officiating from yesterday, and they are complaining and therefore losers. Hans points out bad officiating, and it is just pointing out bad officiating.

Hans harasses people left and right and generally makes an immature jackass out of himself and he's 'give facts.' Someone turns Hans' own words against him in a way he can't dispute, and he whines like a little girl that he's being harassed.

I make four or five posts in this thread, and I don't have a life. Hans has four or five on every page, and he's just presenting "truth."

Add "hypocritical" to the list of distasteful adjectives that describes you and your behavior Hans. But you just keep coming up with your sophomoric zingers to make yourself feel better while revealing to everybody that if you are more than 11 years old, then you should be ashamed of yourself for your behavior and general lack of intellect.

Michigan public school system, you have failed miserably. Exhibit 1: Hans.
