Jayhawks pull out 35-28 win over Southern Miss

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)—Todd Reesing threw for 331 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 20 Kansas shook off the effects of a midweek fight with the basketball team to hold off Southern Mississippi 35-28 on Saturday.

Kansas (4-0), as usual, had no trouble moving the ball in rolling up 433 total yards. The Jayhawks weren’t so good on defense, allowing Southern Miss quarterback Austin Davis to throw for 331 yards and three touchdowns.

Southern Miss (3-1) knocked off one BCS school last week, upsetting Virginia 37-34 at home to extend the nation’s second-longest winning streak to eight games. The Golden Eagles marched through Kansas’ defense (395 total yards), but couldn’t stop Reesing when they needed to.

Reesing, despite spending most of the game dodging defenders, hit Kerry Meier on a pair of TD passes, the second a 12-yarder that put the Jayhawks up 35-28 early in the fourth quarter. Meier finished with 10 catches for 141 yards. Freshman Toben Opurum had 109 yards and a touchdown rushing, added another score through the air to help Kansas win its 20th straight nonconference home game.

Kansas had a rough week after a series of altercations between members of the football and basketball teams rocked this normally placid campus.

The offense certainly didn’t seem to be bothered by the distractions.

Reesing hit Meier on 62-yard touchdown pass 80 seconds in the game, then led the Jayhawks on a 74-yard scoring drive capped by Dezmon Briscoe’s 20-yard reverse on their second drive. Reesing closed out the first half by floating a pass to Opurum out of the backfield for a 12-yard score that put Kansas up 21-14.

The defense? Not so good.

A breakdown on the outside led to a 49-yard completion on a screen pass on Southern Miss’ fourth play, setting up a 1-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Jonathan Massey. DeAndre Brown then slipped behind the defense and scored on a 22-yard pass up the sideline that tied the game at 14-all.

Another breakdown—an enormous hole up the middle—in the third quarter allowed Davis to scamper in for a 16-yard touchdown to cut the Jayhawks’ lead to 28-21. Davis set that up with a 49-yard pass to Brown down the middle and later hit Massey on a 4-yard TD pass to tie the game at 28-all.

The Jayhawks did stop Davis on fourth-and-1 from their 16 in the second quarter and forced two turnovers, including an interception by Ryan Murphy early in the fourth.

Still, giving up nearly 400 yards to a Conference USA team isn’t the best way to head into the wide-open waters of the Big 12.

Penalties were a problem, too.

Kansas was flagged for nine penalties for 77 yards in the first half, including a defensive holding call on third down before Massey’s score. The Jayhawks also had an illegal substitution penalty on that drive and again had 12 men on the field later, forcing a timeout.

Poor defense and stupid penalties won't get us a win going into conference play. Time to sharpen up boys!

Kansas may be a basketball school but they are pretty good at football as well.

I never understood how a school in the heart of farm country could not field a wrestling team. The Cyclones, Hawkeyes, OSU Cowboys, Sooners, Huskers and yes, even the Tigers sometimes recruit from the KS high school system.

From an old collegiate wrestler..........basketball su.ck.s!

From the standpoint of a Southern Miss fan, four plays stand out in my mind as having a big impact on the game. The two times KU went for it on 4th down in no-man's land (around the 30-35) and converted, the failed USM 4th down conversion in the first half and that red zone fumble in the first half. Take away the two USM mis-cues and we've got a totally different ballgame and maybe even a different outcome. I'm glad our guys could basically hang in there with a team as good as KU for 60 minutes on national TV. I hate to have a loss, but at least it was a performance that we could (for the most part) be proud of.

Seth, man what have you been smoking? Southern Miss has one of the best running backs in the game today (although he was held in check) along with a stable of 3 or 4 other backs that are scary good, we've also got one of the most efficient QBs who had a heckuva year as a freshman and let's not even talk about our sensational wideout. Okay, let's. DeAndre Brown. Remember the name, Seth. Remember the name.

This is EXACTLY what Mangino and the Jayhawks needed. They needed an early season test versus a good opponent. For those tiger faithful who question the quality of S. Miss... They came into the game with the same record as Mizzou... Had a higher ranked defense than Mizzou... and had a great gameplan combined with a turbulent week for the Hawks.

    But...

A coach loves it when you play poorly and win. It means you bring your team down to earth and they understand they are not invincible without putting a mark in the "L column." I am sure the coaching staff will have plenty to point out that can be improved during the off-week.

KU rolls Iowa St in two weeks after two weeks of fixing exposed problems.

Once again, missouri idiots are on our board. KU lives rent free in their brain. They eat, sleep, and breathe, KU. I wasn't aware the mu played on Friday. Truthfully, unless they're playing Kansas, I don't know who they play from week to week. Ever.

Meanwhile, a lot of griping was going on at Memorial, but SM was a quality opponent--aggressive, disciplined, and well-coached. For our kids to make the number of mistakes they made and still win was pretty impressive.

But our pass defense leaves a lot to be desired.

Seth W, that is the stupidest thing I've heard all day. Nevada has a better offense than Southern Miss? Southern Miss has a handful of NFL players on their offense, and if you watched them in person as I did today you would see what I mean. RB Damion Fletcher is one of the only players in College Football history to rush for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons; Austin Johnson has great size, great mobility, and a canon arm; DeAndre Brown looks like the next Randy Moss, and that is certainly not an overstatement. 6-6 228 with good speed and leaping ability. Nevada sucks, Missouri sucks, and you suck. Southern Miss would easily beat Missouri if the two teams met and Kansas is going to light you guys up at the end of the season

KU will finish first, ahead of the mizzery dreamers and the corn people. Nebraska will finish second and mizzery will finish 3rd or 4th. And RC you obviously haven't watched any mizzoura games, they barely beat bowling green and struggled against nevada. The big 12 will eat them up.

Muck Fizzou was lucky to beat a winless and lackluster Nevada team Friday night. You seem so high and mighty there RC, your kitties have not played anybody with a winning record.

So typical, you grade your season on what KU does and doesnt do.

    Damn slavers!!!

Let's see KU is 4-0, should beat ISU, C0, KS. that is 7-0. 50-50 against MU, Neb, Tech Tech, so that is 7-3 to 10-0. Depending on injuries and a couple of breaks, KU is 7-5 to 12-0, avg 9-3.

If Southern Miss focuses on their strength of run defense, KU will kill them through the air. If they drop more guys into coverage, KU will simply be more balance on offense. Either way, it will be a long day for the G Eagles.
