No. 11 Hokies roll over No. 9 Miami 31-7

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP)—Jacory Harris planned to play it cool against Virginia Tech.

The 11th-ranked Hokies blew up that plan in about five minutes, harassing the Hurricanes’ quarterback into early mistakes and dominating No. 9 Miami 31-7 in a downpour on Saturday.

Afterward, the player getting all the hype took all the heat.

“I take all the blame for what happened tonight,” Harris said.

But the Hokies really deserved the credit for making it happen, putting pressure on the heralded sophomore that he hadn’t seen in his first two games and causing him to make critical mistakes, including a fumble that led to a touchdown after his fifth snap.

Sacked only once in his first two games, Harris was hit by Dorian Porch as he looked downfield. He fumbled the ball and Porch recovered at the Hurricanes’ 11. Five plays later, Ryan Williams scored from the 2 and the Hokies had a 7-0 lead after just over five minutes.

“For Porch to come off the edge and make that kind of play, a big-time play, it gave us the momentum right away and it changed the outlook of the game,” said Hokies defensive end Jason Worilds, who was involved in both of the Hokies’ other sacks in brutal conditions.

Miami (2-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), in the top 10 for the first since 2005, missed a chance to take a commanding lead in the Coastal Division with its third win in a row against a ranked foe. Instead, Virginia Tech (3-1, 1-0) won the game that may matter most, giving them the tiebreaking advantage against the `Canes should they wind up tied.

The Hokies said they felt slighted by all the attention Harris and the Hurricanes received all week, and played like they wanted to remind the country they were the ACC favorites coming into the season.

“We felt like we were being a little disrespected,” linebacker Cody Grimm said. “We were defending ACC champs and no one was talking about us having a chance in this game.”

Virginia Tech also took the wraps off Tyrod Taylor, and he combined with Williams for most of the Hokies 272 rushing yards on the rain-soaked turf at sold-out Lane Stadium.

Williams ran for 150 yards and two TDs, and Taylor had 75 after being reluctant to run in the Hokies’ nonconference games, leaving some fans so disgusted that they left early last week and missed the Hokies’ stunning last-minute turnaround to beat No. 25 Nebraska 16-15.

“With him running the ball today, it opened up a lot of things,” Williams said. “We were able to get down the field faster and he was also able to throw the ball effectively.”

Taylor finished 4-for-9 for 98 yards, including a 48-yard TD to Jarrett Boykin. His rushing total also moved him past Michael Vick and into third place among Tech quarterbacks.

The key was the defense, which allowed 209 yards its in first game since being described by defensive coordinator Bud Foster as “embarrassing,” and a bunch of good bounces.

Harris finished 9-for-25 for 150 yards with an interception early in the fourth quarter that led to the game-clinching touchdown, but wasn’t the only problem for the Hurricanes.

Jimmy Graham dropped two passes on a drive into Virginia Tech territory in the third quarter when they had closed to within 21-7 and had momentum on their side. They had to go for it on fourth-and-13 from the 33, and Harris’ pass to Dedrick Epps went for nine yards.

“We had the momentum,” Harris said of the second drive in the second half. The first had taken just five plays to Javarris James’ 1-yard touchdown run. “We just got stalled.”

Earlier, a missed blocking assignment allowed the Hokies to block a punt for a TD.

“Playing at a tough place like this, when they’re feeling good about themselves like they were, it’s a hard thing to bounce back from,” Miami offensive tackle Jason Fox said.

The good bounces were critical, too, because the Hokies benefited every time.

They muffed one punt early in the first quarter and had another glance off a player’s leg deep in their own territory, but recovered both times. They also botched a snap on a punt of their own, giving Miami possession at the Tech 23, but a false start penalty, a rush for a loss of 2 and a sack by Worilds for minus-9 forced the Hurricanes to punt it away.

By the time Harris threw an interception to Rashad Carmichael that set up the game’s final score, the fans who braved the horrid conditions wanted to stay and enjoy every minute.

Kevin, good stats, I think they are close but off just slightly. Nebraska has a 19-6-1 record all time against the SEC and has played every school in the SEC except for Vandy and Kentucky. The Huskers are 14-5 when playing an SEC team that is ranked in the top 20. In two of those 5 losses to a top 20 team they lost by a combined 6 points.

Nebraska has always had a pretty good handle on the SEC. I still can recall back in 1996 how everyone predicted the Fun and Gun offense was going to light up the Huskers. When that game was played it shocked everyone, except Nebraska fans. We all knew, yeah Fla could put up huge numbers throwing the ball, but if your QB is lying on his back he can't throw too much.

I think Miami is not all bad, they have a lot of talent and speed. Their problem is that they are a very, very young team and against VT that inexperience showed. Miami clearly was overwhelmed by the big game atmosphere. When Neb played VT they stayed in the game because Neb has veteran leaders on their defense who controlled the game. Miami did not have that type of experience to kind of hold it together. Miami looked worse in that game than I think they really are and perhaps VT looked a little better than what they really are.

The Truth, if you are a huge VT fan then you should be proud of the Hokie fans and Blacksburg. I went to the Neb vs. VT game two weeks ago and I have to tell you the fans in Blacksburg were the best fans outside of Lincoln I have ever seen. I live in Wash D.C. but a huge Neb fan. Although I have lived 250 miles from Blacksburg for 25 years I never once had been there. I would recommend to anyone to take the drive, gorgeous campus, beutiful drive in the mountains. I have been to some pretty hostile venues, Boulder, Happy Valley, and Miami when Hurricane fans used to be really nasty. Let me tell you the Hokie fans were truly right on par with Husker fans. Everyone always talks about how classy Neb fans are but I think we just found our competition, I was honestly blown away. As my son and I walked across the drill feild, students would say "thanks for coming to Blacksburg enjoy the game". We stayed for two days and did not meet a single knucklehead. I went to a game in Happy Valley one time where it got so out of hand that my wife and I left in the middle of the 3rd quarter because we litterally feared for our safety.

Hokie fans should give themselves a high five because they really represented VT in a classy way.

Nice Post Kevin. I agree, Casie speaks in generalities and typically provides faulty information or completely inaccurate information. From what I've seen, Casie has a few friends that are even more uninformed as she / he is, and they think she / he is somehow knowledgeable about football...when she / he is far from it.

My opinion is that Miami is not over-rated. I am a huge VT fan and everyone knows that bad weather is the great equalizer. I definatley don't think the game would have been 31-7 if it was a clear sunny day. Miami has all sorts of weapons on offense and believe their WRs and RBs are equal to or better than every team in the ACC and SEC. Let's see what happens when they play OK this weekend. If they win that game I bet everyone will change their tune.

It's funny how SEC fans don't give teams like Nebraska any credit. All I hear from Bama fans is howmany SEC titles they have and how they consistently beat big teams, and how they have won 12 national championships 5 decades ago...yada yada yada.

I love those stats about Nebraska basically owning the SEC. It's funny because the SEC's comeback will probably be about how that was along time ago; yet they will clammor about national championships that happened even longer ago. LOL. I wonder if the SEC fans know that Nebraska has the 3rd best scoring defense behind OK and South Florida. Funny how NC State has the best defense it terms of total yards allowed.

Read this article about Bama football and how weak their schedule is. They nly play 4 teams this year that had a winning record last year. What a joke

Casie, suggest you do your homework on teams like Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan etc.

You say Nebraska has been dominated by the SEC!?!?! Nebraska owns a record of 20-5 against SEC teams including No. 2 Alabama, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Tennessee. Nebraska gave Fla. the worst spanking ever in a national title game. Nebraska is 8-1 when playing an SEC team ranked in the top 5. In 1996 Nebraska beat No. 2 Fla 62-24 and the score should have been 69-24 but Osborne being the class act he is told his team to take a knee at the 1 yard line. In 1972 Nebraska beat No. 2 Alabama 38-6 in a national title game. In case you lost track Nebraska beat Fla and Bama by a combined 100-31 in national title games.

Back to VT, the Hokies are a good team but I think a little overrated. Everyone is all jacked up because they hammered an incredibly overrated Miami team that went 19-19 in the previous 3 years. Whoopie, VT clobbered a bad Miami team. Against Neb, let's be honest here, Neb outplayed the Hokies up and down the feild for 55 minutes. They beat themselves by not executing in the red zone and then VT had a miracle play when a Husker player blew his assignment and the guy was wide open down the feild. VT did not win that game as much as Neb lost that game, as college football fans lets be honest about that.

Nebraska is a good team that has improved steadily on defense in the past 2 seasons and their running game I would put up against 95% of teams in the country. Their passing game needs work, receivers need to calm down and run proper routes and Zac Lee needs to stop getting excited and missing wide open receivers. I look at the polls and ask myself how can VT be ranked No. 6 and Nebraska be ranked No. 23? What are the pollsters looking at?

How is Miami, a team that was completely dominated by VT and lost by four TDs ranked ahead of Nebraska, a team that dominated VT and lost by 1 point with 21 seconds left in the game.

A lot of football to be played but one thing is certain early on, the polls are proving to be more garbage than ever in recent history, there is not ryme or reason to rankings.

Miami is too soft. They shouldn't be in the 20 because the were dominated big time by VT and the rest of their schedule is only missing the local Miami Girl Scouts of America. Think I am lying...you say tough schedule...okay, here it is...FSU dud, Florida A&M what? UCF jokes, South Florida-nice try, Duke good basketball team, North Carolina...see Duke, Virgina maybe, Wake Forrest no way, Clemson nope! Miami get out of here with the talk of why you dropped. Your schedule is not a top 20 schedule and yes you do play 2 games all year and will lose both...well, you've lost one already so I am one game away from being 100%. That will happen in OK soon enough. I appreciate your passion and maybe you could fill your stadium like other schools do and then we can talk. Next year play some teams.

Ok so VT, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio St all have one loss and have never dropped 8 rankings when they did lose. These rankings make no sense. Miami has had a damn hard schedule and have lost one game so far, granted they were embarrased, but 17 is a little harsh.

Miami needs to start doing something about there defense. They look aweful. You can't sit back and let QB's just torch you with all the time in the world. I've been yelling at them for 3 weeks to blitz more. Send the safeties, send corners, send the Linebackers. Obviously not all at once but they seriously need to do something. They've been aweful on defense, giving up over 80 pts and scoring less than they've given up. I haven't seen such a bad defense be called "one of the best teams in the nation," before they lost to V Tech. It was pooring rain and they were trying to throw the ball way too much. They obviously thought they were so good they didn't need to show up on Saturday.

If the defense plays the way the did vs Tech Oklahoma is going to kill them. If they are going to constantly sit back and put no blitzes on, and by blitzes I don't mean sending 5 people, send 7! Safety blitzes, Corner blitzes, OLB blitzes to the strong side. It seems Shannon doesn't have any faith in sending the safeties or corners. He needs to try it because what he's doing now isn't working. I understand there D-Line is hurt but I don't understand why not take some chances on defense when your d is getting ripped to shred by a below average QB in Tyrod Taylor.

By the way Miami's punter, whatever his name is, pisses me off. I've never seen a punter so@#$%y and risky as this guy. He thinks he's the bees knees. If you watch him on the sidelines he acts like he's done nothing wrong. After getting 3 punts almost blocked you would think to make an adjustment but not this guy or this team. He takes even longer and I have to ask were you trying to get it blocked? Miami has made no adjustments on the year, especially when it comes to there defense. They have so many highly touted blue chip prospects on defense, but I don't see any. I don't see one person that I can sit there and say, "Wow this guy is going to be special." Randy Shannon needs to get his head out of his arse, along with the defensive coaches and start sending some blitz packages along with training the DB's how to play bump and run when you have that much speed. Horrible, down right horrible. This team could be special if they knew how to send more people that a 4-5 man rush.

Mike the Dyke...VT beat JMU by 3. What are you watching butt-pirate. Isn't Richmond #1 in all of D-2 and W&M and JMU ranked in the entire D-2 division as well? They are certainly better than Fl. International, Troy, Chattanooga, Charleston Southern..etc. With that said, I agree that UVA, Maryland, and Duke are weak this year. With that said, I think statistics would show that year in and year out, UVA and Maryland are definately better than Miss State and Vandy. Check the stats ass-munch.

LOL.....listen to this dumbass Daniel. He thinks BC, and Wake Forest are better than Miami, Florida State, Clemson, and GT. Talk about a guy that has no clue about ACC football. Miami, FL. State, and Clemson would easily beat 8 of the 12 SEC teams. GT is better than at least 1/2 of the other SEC schools. Now UVA, Duke, and Maryland are horrible I agree (but that is just this year). Year over year, UVA and Maryland are historically better than Mississipi State and Vandy. I guarantee SEC has only 4 ranked teams within 3 weeks and most likely will be down to 3 ranked teams sometime this season. The reason the SEC defensive statistics look good right now is because they are loading up on Troy, Florida International, North Texas, Chattanooga..etc. Georgia and Arkansas haven't played a lick of defense all year. I'm seeing some other high scoring games in the watered down SEC. Keep in mind Alabama only plays 3 ranked teams all year, Florida only plays 2 ranked teams and they have 8 home games and 4 away games and there out of conference is the worst by far of any top 10 team. SEC is a joke. Catch a clue rookie

Hey the "truth" South Carolina beat a marginal NC State, but that was the first game of the year. The Defense dominated NC State, who was, and still is expected to be a pretty good offense when things are said and done. Besides NC State still is going to be one of the top teams in the ACC when it is said and done.
The ACC Sucks let's face it! Miami is a joke, FSU is a joke, Clemson is a joke, Ga Tech is a Joke, North Carolina is a joke, Maryland, Virginia, and Duke all jokes! That leaves a few Wake Forest, Boston College, and Va Tech. that are actually decent, but they own the ACC! The problem with the ACC is this, they do not play defense, and they are a basketball conference!

Well since we're having a lively discussion about success over the past 10 years, here are some fun numbers. Most wins in the past 10 years (BCS teams):

    Oklahoma 109
    Texas 106
    Southern Cal 100
    Virginia Tech 100

Alabama has 75. VT also has 4 conference championships in that time. Look guys. It's not even a discussion if you want to talk about who has the more storied program. Or who had the better team when we met this year. And I wouldn't exactly be excited about a rematch, either. But if you want to talk about who has had more success in the past decade . . . the answer is clear.

We don't have an NC yet. But we've only had a serious program for about 15 years, and only been "on the map" for the past 10. Our time will come - Go Hokies!

As a VT fan I would like to put out a disclosure that "the truth" is not in any way representative of VT fans. I am glad that we got the win last night and finally seemed to have all phases of our game working. It is amazing what a defense can do when the offense allows them to catch their breath !! The d set the o up well and the special teams were actually special (we had been living on reputation for special teams the last couple of years). I hope that we can earn our way into the national picture over the course of the season. Go Hokies !!!! and please don't hold "the truth" against us !!!

Virginia , duke and Maryland are puncing bags for just about anybody fortunate enough to play them. Maryland lost to Middle Tennessee and Rutgers. Virginia lost to William and Mary ( is that a high school?) and Soutern Miss. Duke lost to Richmond. The ACC is below the Big east and close to MAC. Jokers and posers. LMAO

VT had 155 of total offense compared to 498 in their loss to Alabama. They lost by 10pts. I hardly call that squeaking by. That's a thorough butt whoopin. The only amazing part of the game was how did VT keep the score as close as they did. Alabama whipped them on both sides of the ball. Men against boys.
