ATLANTA (AP)—Quarterback Josh Nesbitt ran for two touchdowns and Georgia Tech’s defense made the most of a change to its scheme to beat No. 22 North Carolina 24-7 on Saturday.

Georgia Tech (3-1 overall, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened in a 4-3 scheme instead of the 4-2-5 it ran in last week’s 33-17 loss at Miami. The Yellow Jackets held North Carolina (3-1, 0-1) to 154 yards.

Jonathan Dwyer, the 2008 ACC player of the year, had 158 yards rushing for his first 100-yard game of the season. He showed no sign of the shoulder injury that limited him to five carries for 7 yards against Miami.

Nesbitt added a career-high 32 carries for 97 yards. Georgia Tech had 317 yards rushing in its spread option offense while holding North Carolina to 17.

North Carolina’s only touchdown came on T.J. Yates’ 40-yard pass to Erik Highsmith early in the fourth quarter.

Georgia Tech then put the game away with a 17-play, 76-yard touchdown drive, capped by Nesbitt’s 10-yard run. The drive lasted 8 minutes, 15 seconds.

Morgan Burnett had two interceptions for Georgia Tech, including one that ended North Carolina’s final drive with 1:34 remaining.

Yates was 11 of 26 for 137 yards with the two interceptions and one touchdown. Nesbitt was 7-for-17 for 89 yards.

A 35-yard run by Dwyer was the highlight as Georgia Tech drove 88 yards on its first possession. Roddy Jones’ 13-yard run gave the Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead.

Georgia Tech extended its lead after a Tar Heels turnover. Yates lined up in the shotgun but wasn’t looking for the snap when the ball shot past him. Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan recovered the fumble at the North Carolina 32, setting up Scott Blair’s 34-yard field goal for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson was enraged at the end of the half after officials did not stop the clock following a first-down catch by Demaryius Thomas, who appeared to go out of bounds when tackled at the Tar Heels’ 44. Time ran out after Nesbitt completed a 33-yard pass to Stephen Hill at the North Carolina 6, and Johnson raced onto the field to again confront the officials.

North Carolina had 17 plays for 7 yards before finally mounting its first scoring threat. A 30-yard pass from Yates to Highsmith was wasted when Casey Barth was wide right on a 32-yard field goal attempt.

Blair missed tries of 37 yards in the first quarter and 27 yards in the third quarter.

There was light rain in the second half. Fans were cautioned of lightning in the area at the start of the fourth quarter and told they could re-enter the stadium if they chose to leave. Most fans remained until the rain became heavy in the final minutes.

I'm not sure why people are surprised. Ga Tech was picked to finish ahead of NC in the preseason. Just 1 week ago, Ga Tech was ranked 13th and lost that ranking by losing at Miami, which isn't a terrible loss. They were playing at home yesterday and go whipped by NC last year in Chapel Hill. The outcome of this game should not be that surprsing

By no means was this an upset loss. There was hope for a UNC road win but odds were against it. The offense for the heels did not produce against a stout Tech defense. And missing the field goal before half did not help. The defense was on the field way too long and that showed up in the fourth quater. There was not a ugly loss. It showed what the Heels have to work on for the coming weeks. Now comes the time to show what kind of football UNC really has when they play against the Wahoos at home next week. Butch Davis is a very good coach for the UNC program and by his input of the this season's schedule shows that he has a good grip on his team. The Heels will win the game against VA. if their Offense plays better than 158 yards total for the day and find the recievers that they had found against ECU, then they should be back on track. There are not too many teams that can win a game with seven points. Even though UNC has won a few 7 - 3 games over the past few years. And I do think UNC's defense can win a game like that this season and most likely will. Let's hope that todays lost will give the Heels the readiness to play against the teams to come. And the know how to bounce back after a loss. Especially after the win next week. Hook'um Heels.

This is what I have been saying for years. College sports are the most exciting sports in the nation, we see an upset every week. The same goes for High School sports. I have had very close contact with all pro sports and the men that make it, I can count on one hand the men I would consider roll models. The roll models I see as a coach are the student athlete's that are Honer students, not the below average student with great skills. Thanks to all the Student athlete's for the privilege you give me every week in Football , B-ball, Baseball, etc. As sports fans and Americans and the fact that we are one Nation under God with the privilege and it is a privilege, thanks to the American armed forces that we are able to do this week in and week out. For those of you who do not believe in God please do not respond to me. you will be responding to a higher power one day. Your responce will fall on deaf ears. Now the debate on what conference is better that will go on and on and on. Let me ask you all this does it really matter?? Enjoy the privlege, enjoy life and don't hurt anyone alone the way

tech had to win this game and now we need vt to get miami...tech's defense showed up today. miami had an extra week to prep and had a great game plan. tech has to continue to play hard with intensity and get some breaks to continue to win against the tougher opponents. next weeks game is not going to be easy as msst is staying with lsu. good game nc, your team, fans and school always has lots of class.

weve still got along way to go to be a good football team and it showed today id like to say that were young and inexperienced but gt is younger than us so . the defense is good no question but they need to get better on 3rd down they stopped them from scoring at times but they let them use up a lot of clock only one 3 and out the entire game and you cant do that and win. the offense still needs alot of work and some of the play calling was questionable but they really didnt have it much miami showed everyone how to beat gt , to bad the coaches werent watching anyway congrats gt and good luck the rest of the season good game
