RENO, Nev. (AP)—Blaine Gabbert is doing his best to make Missouri fans forget about Chase Daniel.

The sophomore quarterback passed for 414 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring tosses of 74 and 31 yards to Danario Alexander, while scrambling for his life much of Friday night to help undefeated Missouri beat Nevada 31-21.

“You look at him sometimes and say, `How does he do it?”’ Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “He finds people down field.

“That’s our team. The young guys have learned a lot from the guys ahead of them.”

In four games this season, Gabbert has completed 66 percent of his passes (87 of 131) for 1,161 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Alexander finished with nine catches for a career-high 170 yards, and Grant Resel made all four of his field-goal attempts to run his streak to 10 for 10 this season for the Tigers (4-0), who have won a school-record 14 consecutive nonconference games.

“When our defense and offense put it together, we’re a pretty good team,” Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon said.

Luke Lippincott ran for 114 yards for the Wolf Pack (0-3), who took a 13-7 lead on the first series of the second half on Colin Kaepernick’s 11-yard touchdown run and had a chance to regain the lead early in the fourth quarter before Lippincott fumbled on Missouri’s 4.

Wes Kemp caught three passes for 99 yards, and Jared Perry added eight receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers, whose last nonconference loss was in the 2006 Sun Bowl against Oregon State. They have an off week before opening Big 12 play at home against Nebraska on Oct. 8.

Gabbert completed 25 of 40 attempts Friday night. He knew he had some big shoes to fill when he began the season. Daniel, now on the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad, led Missouri to two Big 12 championship game appearances and set school records with 12,515 career passing yards and 101 touchdown passes.

Missouri struggled early but went ahead 18-13 in the third quarter on Gabbert’s 74-yard hookup with Alexander. The Tigers put the game away early in the fourth quarter on a 97-yard scoring drive, capped by Gabbert’s 4-yard TD pass to Perry.

Turnovers and penalties cost both teams in the first half.

Trailing 12-7, Nevada had a chance to cut into the lead just before the half when Burnett Kaelin forced Derrick Washington to fumble and Jonathan Amaya recovered it at the Tigers 27 with 23 seconds left. But the Wolf Pack’s Nate Agaiava was whistled for a personal foul after the recovery and they had burned all their time outs in the first quarter so were unable to get close enough for a field-goal attempt.

Nevada squandered another chance to score on Lippincott’s fumble on the 4 when Aldon Smith stripped the ball loose and Brian Coulter recovered with 14:29 left in the game.

“The turnovers have killed us,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said. “The difference in the game was that 14-point turnaround. We fumbled and they go down 97 yards and score. That also hurt us because they were able to eat the clock. That put us in a real difficult situation with our offense.”

Nevada’s Mike Ball returned the opening kick of the second half 52 yards and Lippincott carried six consecutive times for 34 yards to move deep into Missouri territory. On third-and-7 from the 11, Kaepernick started to roll right then with three Tigers in pursuit, rolled back around the left side to score for a 13-7 lead. Running back Courtney Randall failed to convert a 2-point play.

Missouri answered two plays later from their own 26 when Gabbert lobbed a pass to an open Alexander at midfield and he raced to the end zone. Another failed 2-point try left the score at 18-13 with 10:29 left in the third.

Missouri led 3-0 on Ressel’s 22-yard field goal after Vai Taua fumbled a punt at midfield and Andrew Gachkar recovered it.

Nevada’s first first-half score of the season came when Kaepernick pitched to Lippincott, who pitched to flanker Chris Wellington on a reverse for a 19-yard gain to set up Randall’s 2-yard touchdown run for a 7-3 lead. Ressel added a 31-yard field goal to cut it to 7-6 a minute before the end of the first quarter. He also hit from 27 and 26.

Gabbert was scrambling under pressure on third-and-8 from Nevada’s 31, but managed to escape and threw over the middle to Alexander who caught it at the 20 and sprinted to the end zone to put Missouri up 12-7 with 2:09 left in the half.

Mizzou has not been tested yet, Nebraska has and outplayed VT for all but one single play. I think Mizzou might be in for an awakening in a few nights.

Luke M, how many you lost. Anytime Mizzou plays anyone with talent they loose. Example, OU (twice) 2 years ago, OU (twice again), OSU, Texas and Kansas last year. Seems that the only quality wins you have in the conference is against Kansas 2 years ago and..............um, well there is always ISU. I am just saying, for the most part you don't beat anyone worth anything.

SInce you mentioned two years ago, don't forget MU 38 Arkansas 7 in the Cotton Bowl. Arkansas whipped LSU that season, and the pollsters ranked LSU at # in the nation. OU had Mizzou's number - I don't know why. But that was the only team that beat Mizzou (twice) that season. Last season, Mizzou lost a few players off the defense and O-line. This season they have rebuilt some - they are looking pretty good so far.

I love how people say VT is overrated, yet, they just made Miami their @#$%. The Tigers have a rude awakening when NU comes to town.

Gary, I am one of the many that did not play college ball. If you want to know where I went to school at, I will give you the answer in a riddle. The same school that Rick Upchurch started at before he transfered to Mizzou. Now, to the best of my knowledge this site is for college football fans, not just the ones that played college ball. If you played college ball, congrats. Reality check, by putting yourself in that lifestyle, you put yourself at the mercy of the public. Is it fair, probably not, just is what it is.

Is anyone noticing what Iowa is doing this year? If I remember right Mizzou was suppose to play them, then broke the agreement a few years back.

Tim G, for once I completely agree with a Mizzou fan (assuming you are one). Nebraska people just cannot let go. Every time an argument comes up about what have you done lately, Nebraska fans start talking about the 90s. We'll see which team between MU and NU is better this year in a couple of weeks (I'm guessing NU), but Kansas is the clear-cut favorite to win the North this year. The only thing holding them back is that they have to play at Texas, OU, and at Texas Tech

Mizzou looks like a good team. They are still green in a couple of areas, but they have lost many players from their excellent season two years ago. These new kids will develop as the season progresses and the Tigers should be in serious contention for the Big 12 North Championship again. They continue to win. Nevada is not a great team or anything, but they are normally one of those teams that scores a lot of points (and has little defense).

I only wish my CU Buffs would live up to their expectations - but that's another story.

Nevada has almost never lacked on O ability. For years they were known as AIR WOLF for their explosive air attack. Ault has gotten some really good running backs lately and so the running game is now more emphasized. The problem on D has been no one to replace the human wall they used to enjoy. When your all-time best players are now retirees from the NFL for 15+ years it is hard to build a consistent program. There is no one to compare ability with and drive the freshmen to achievement levels. The good programs always recruit with someone to inspire. Nevada needs to get back in the groove and then games like this would actually be reflections of ability and not unfulfilled wishes. Nevada could've won with more self control and a couple misplays by Mizzou. That's why you play the game. Go Nevada!

i'm a huge mizzou fan, but they have a lot to prove, they have been pretty good the last few years, and its nice to see, and everyone knows a couple of years ago they should of been in that orange bowl game , not kansas , they had just got done beating them the week before and then the bcs gives the orange to kansas , now that was WRONG, anyway, their pretty good right now , not great, its just nice to see they win the games they are supposed to , better than how it was my whole life growing up

I quote from Luke M: Since 2006, no team in the country has lost fewer games than Missouri.

So you think by posting something thats not true that you will get people to believe you? People will know when your lying and you wont get away with it. Mizzou hasnt even gone to a BCS bowl game ever in the history of their program so there is no freaking way they can be the winningest team. That comment makes me laugh. Its almost as good as some guy that says he can run a 400m run in 30 seconds that i talked to.

Tigers are to young to win the north this year but 8 or 9 win season but a would be great after losing their 3 best offensive players. Looks like Gabbert may turn out to be the best mizzou quarterback ever. With his size pro scouts will be everywhere next year, as for Nevada could have blown the tigers out look at total yardage 492 Mizzou to 364 Nevada a with lot that coming after the game was over. Also Mizzou sat on the ball at the end of the game when they could have scored! Dont think Mizzou can beat Nebraska but I thought Nebraska would give them a game last year so you never know. GO MIZZOU!!!!!!!!!

kyle h, just to point out the "look how many they've lost"

Since 2006, no team in the country has lost fewer games than Missouri.

That means, the most winningest team has been Mizzou. Just sayin'

Man, if Nevada could play a little defense, stop turning the ball over in the redzone, coach wouldnt burn all time outs in the 1st drive, etc. this would have easily been a blowout for the Wolfpack over Mizzou.
Game a lot closer than the score indicated, in fact Nevada should have blown the Tigers out. They have turnover issues and were moving up and down the field on the Tigers.

    lol, crazy. Wreck EM.

I thought the Nevada fans were amazing. It is tough to win on somebody else's home turf with fan support like the fans in Reno, Nevada. But, Missouri did it, and the with was no fluke. These guys are for real and they are going to surprise a lot of people including their own fans.

You beat an Illinois team that was 5-7 last year and 1-2 this year. If that is your crown jewel of a win, yes they are a joke.

Play some D. Top ranked D in the Big XII last year was what, 63rd. That was not even Mizzou. I know all the great QBs in the Big XII. How did Chase Daniels do against an average Northwestern team in the Alamo Bowl (yes I know they won)? Something like 190 yards passing. The Northwestern QB set a career high for passing yards (Northwestern is not known for it's passing by the way) and set a record for offensive yards in a game. The D might improve but really by how much? Again, play some D. Mizzou is a joke.

Tell me this, if Mizzou is not a joke, why is it that they win the Big XII North title the last two years, and not get invited to a BCS game. Last year it was OU and Texas, legit reason. The year before, they were ranked what #1 going into the title game, lost, then Kansas was invited over them. I know, it is all about money for the bowls. So with that being said, Kansas was a better choice due to traveling better and TV ratings (which is where the money is made by the bowls). Yes Mizzou is a JOKE!

Mizzou is a joke?? Mizzou has been in a joke most of my life but not now. I'm not saying they are great but give me a break, I think the Big 10 is a joke but we did kill Illinois. No teams play a hard out of conference schedule. In college it's all about tradition and what you have done in the past not what you have done this year, Ohio St, LSU, Penn St, Virgina Tech etc. A playoff is the ONLY answer. As far as Mizzou goes I'll take a 3 loss season and than maybe a better run next year. Go Mizzou!!!!
