Southern rallies past Tennessee State 21-17
BATON ROUGE La. (AP)—Brian Threat’s 9-yard touchdown run with 3:47 to play lifted Southern to a 21-17 win over Tennessee State on Saturday night.
Threat was the workhorse for Southern (2-1), handling 22 of the Jaguars’ 37 carries for 44 yards.
Bryant Lee, who was 23-of-32 for 250 yards, helped Southern build a 14-3 lead with two touchdown passes. Juamorris Stewart caught 10 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
Tennessee State (1-2) responded with two straight touchdowns to reclaim the lead 17-14.
Terrance Wright scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter to pull Tennessee State to within 14-10. The Tigers took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard pass from Calvin McNairl to Joseph Hills.
McNairl completed only 9-of-25 passes for 86 yards with two interceptions.
