HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP)—Tory Harrison’s 57-yard touchdown run capped a Southern Mississippi rally as the Golden Eagles defeated Virginia 37-34.

Southern Miss (3-0) trailed until the fourth quarter, with fumbles and penalties allowing the Cavaliers to surge to a 13-0 lead after one quarter.

Virginia (0-3) scored on a 69-yard pass from Jameel Sewell to Tim Smith and had two field goals, thanks to Southern Miss fumbles.

A roughing the passer call on Southern Miss set up 4-yard TD run by Sewell to give the Cavaliers a 27-10 lead at halftime.

The victory is Southern Miss’ eighth straight.

Southern Miss is 4-2 in home games against BCS conference opponents since 2001. The last big conference school in town was North Carolina State, which fell 37-17 in 2006.

Unfortuantely for the state of VA there is not enough talented football players to go around ...with Va Tech getting the best then out of state schools getting the next batch, U of VA will have a tough time even after Groh goes. We are fortunate in MS, though a very small population state, to have a lot of great atheletes. Many kids see this (athletics) as there way up with economic conditions so poor .... athletes thrive in MS. All of the Universities around us (MS) come to get our athletes yet S Miss still pulls off good teams year after year with (primarily) altheletes Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, LSU and, to some extent Ms State, pass over. An incredible football game, marred only by the atrocious officiating. VA had it's 12th man and they were the men in stripes. Southern Miss played some ugly ball at moments, but this is a team that will make some noise in the rankings as the season goes on. We saw it last year when they crashed to a 2-6 beginning, only to come back and make it to a bowl game. We saw it last week, dropping 4 punts against UCF and still put them away. We saw it in this game, down 17 points to VA, not once, but twice in the 2nd half and coming back to win. This team does not give up and their confidence is clear. UVA QB played a good game, but Southern Miss has one hell of a team this year!!

Every year, we hear the rumors of Groh being fired then it dies down. But this year I think the bell tolls for thee, Al. Groh is a terrible game coach( ie. Texas Tech, anyone ?) and now UVa is getting absolutely crushed by VaTech in recruiting which was supposed to be a Groh strength. All the best in-state talent is just funneling into Blacksburg so something's gotta give.....Congrats to So. Miss as you have a nice program down there and best of luck the rest of the way !

The Cavs need to look into hiring Jimmy LaCock for HC. He has done a wonderful job as coach for the Tribe. Who better to be the next coach for UVA then another semi-high profile in-state HC? I used to love reading the Sunday papers and read about Tiki rushing for 100 yds; or how many tds Hagens threw?? UVA used to be the @#$% until VaTech came swooping in and took all the Tidewater players. There's hardly any star in the football team worth reading about. At least my Alma Mater is 3-0! Go ODU Monarchs! Even the basketball team is better than UVA's! Lol!

Virginia did have one thing going for them today; They got alot of help from the blind officials who refused to throw flags against virginia for holding and other calls that they ignored. Very good game.

    wade4profit,
It's "offense" and "defense". There is no fence in defense...

    Go Eagles.

I was the loudest critic of hiring Fedora as coach. I shut up 8 games ago. Go Eagles! Fedora, I am a fan of yours now - go work the Defense this week....

Jamel played well, but no rushing offence and the defence against the run is not nearly as good as we used to have. It is going to be a long, depressing season for Hoo fans. At least we will have a new coach next year and hopefully a new direction for this team.

Groh needs to go. But Virginia needs to spend some money and get a high-profile head coach in place. However I am not sure whether UVA values their football program enough to do that (Prince will probably be named the interim coach). Same with their basketball program. They always hire these no-name mediochre coaches who can never do any better than give them a .500 season and then they are let go after 5 years. And it starts all over again. They also have to do a much better job of recruiting. It all boils down to how much time and money they want to devote to their sports programs. They definitely have the bucks!

The Groh era is over. Any ideas who we hire next? Mike Shanahan, perhaps? No reason we cant have a sold football team.
