Ponder leads FSU over No. 7 BYU 54-28

PROVO, Utah (AP)—Florida State ran away with No. 7 BYU’s BCS hopes.

The Seminoles were too fast for the Cougars on Saturday, scoring every time they got inside the 20 and forcing five turnovers in a 54-28 win that crushed BYU’s BCS hopes.

Christian Ponder threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, Ty Jones ran for 108 yards and a score and Greg Reid returned an interception 63 yards for a TD in a rout by the Seminoles.

“It shows us what we can do,” said Ponder, who passed for 195 yards and ran for 77 more. “It’s the first time in a while we played as whole team. The defense played great. The offense played incredible.”

Three weeks after upsetting Oklahoma in the season opener, BYU’s Bowl Championship Series aspirations faded a little bit on each drive by the Seminoles.

Florida State (2-1) converted on its first nine third downs, pounced for 10 points in the final 24 seconds of the second quarter and added two touchdowns in the third, running away and spoiling the most anticipated home opener at BYU (2-1) in years.

“I think Florida State was more prepared in general than we were tonight, really from beginning to end,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “I think their preparation exceeded ours and it showed—especially on third down.”

Florida State looked nothing like the team that needed to rally in the final minute a week ago in a 19-9 win over Jacksonville State.

The Seminoles finished 12-for-15 on third down conversions and scored all eight times they got inside the BYU 20. They scored often enough, starting with a 13-0 lead that BYU was trying to catch up and only continued to fall farther behind with mistakes.

Max Hall completed 20 of 31 passes for 306 yards and two touchdowns for BYU, but also threw three interceptions. Harvey Unga ran for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars.

“Any loss is devastating, regardless of if you’re ranked,” Unga said. “Hats off to those guys. They came here ready to play.”

The Seminoles outran the Cougars 313 yards to 108. FSU didn’t punt until about a minute remained in the third quarter and avoided starting the season 1-2 for the first time since 1989.

“I’ve been through this thing so many times, I knew we had an advantage,” Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said. “We went out there and made some plays, which we hadn’t done lately, and we also forced some crucial turnovers.”

The Seminoles took advantage of two giveaways while scoring 24 straight points, including Reid’s interception return that put Florida State up 37-14 with 12:52 left in the third quarter.

FSU’s Lonnie Pryor ran for two touchdowns on his first two college carries. Ponder was 21-for-26 and carried 11 times, frustrating the Cougars when they had shut down the passing lanes and nearly had him stopped.

If the Cougars expected to be at an advantage playing at 4,500 feet above sea level, the Seminoles from the Atlantic Coast Conference quickly dispelled that notion and showed they were ready to run all four quarters.

Even when BYU of the Mountain West Conference appeared to be on the verge of a big stop, Ponder was able to get the ball away or tuck it and run for a first down.

“He can beat you with his arm, his legs and his mind,” FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said. “And then he can also beat you with how competitive and tough he is.”

BYU had chances to keep up with the Seminoles, but coughed up the ball at crucial moments. The Cougars fumble after driving inside the Florida State 20 on BYU’s opening series, then a fumbled kickoff return allowed the Seminoles to add a field goal by Dustin Hopkins as the clock expired at the end of the second quarter for a 30-14 halftime lead.

Once Reid stepped in front of a pass by Hall and sprinted untouched for a touchdown, the Seminoles were up 37-14 and the blue-clothed fans who packed LaVell Edwards Stadium sat silently as a small contingent of FSU fans chanted and chopped in the northwest corner.

Ponder added a touchdown on a 6-yard run with 5:11 left in the third to put the Seminoles up 44-14 and even an 80-yard touchdown pass by Hall to McKay Jacobson 12 seconds later wasn’t nearly enough to revive BYU.

The closest BYU got was 20-14 on a 3-yard pass from Hall to Manase Tonga with 5:11 left in the second quarter, but Ponder led the Seminoles 82 yards over 12 plays, hitting Caz Piurowski for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

why is BYU out of title talk...if they were in the BIG 10 the sports writers would be still talking about their BCS chances...just look at OSU's awesme's victory over the powerful Toledo team.

Very impressive game. Thought Jimbo called his best game yet! Finally getting the TE into the mix on a regular basis, which will continue to open up the run game. Ponder looks like the real deal. Defense is still a big concern. Noticed Mickey was changing up a few folks up in the DE spot in the 2nd half, and we started getting some pressure on Hall. If we can dial up the right combo on the defensive front....watch out!

I just want to see improvement from week to week. I want to see the Noles play with confidence and attitude. Any team in the Country will have a problem with the offense on the field last night. Ponder was excellent. Several running backs preformed as did several of our recievers. I was also very impressed with the play calling. The Noles seemed to take advantage of every situation they were presented with. It was just a total game. Offense, defense, special teams, coaching and play calling. As a long time Nole fan it was truly fun to watch. I was also impressed with the Versus announcers, the one dude did a great job in explaining things and why this or that worked. Go Noles

If FSU can handle USF as convincingly as they handled BYwho then I'd look for them to go on one hell of a run for the rest of the year, i wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that Miami and FSU see each other again @ the ACC championship. It really depends on if our secondary can play up to the level they played last night, and we have to maintain that running game. But now we know what we are capable of, so there is no reason for us not to play up to that standard every week. We play our game, make the opposing team adjust to us. I am just hoping that they continue to focus and this win doesn't go to their heads,
I think the coaches poll will change over the course of the next two weeks, people are just wondering if FSU is that good or was BYU just that over rated. Which i think it was a little of both.

#155,i agree with what your saying (what was legible that is) but you might want to stand at least toward the middle of the pack. Us 'NOLES fans do not need someone with your phenominal communication skills being the mouthpiece for the cause. When we need someone to paint thier belly, your our go to guy......but leave the speaking to the trained professionsal. How did you get out of third grade?

It is about time for us all to just watch the games and judge for ourselves. We all know that the ACC is NOT as weak as the press make it out to be. We all know that most of the teams that were given rankings before the season started did not deserve top ranking. We all know that FSU is a good team a far better team that BYU.We also know that by week five the voters will have no choice but to fix the top ten and get rid of the pretenders they keep voting for. We also know that FSU will surprise all the doubters when they meet UF .

Perhaps BYU coaches should not have put RILEY NELSON in as quarter back for 2+ minutes in the fourth quarter because he passed for a touch down --one of only three passing touch downs all nite ---now we cannot say, "Gee, there was nothing else the coaches could have done" RILEY is now 5 for 5 on completions no sack and no interecptions.

Just very very proud of my "NOLES".....happy with the win and happy to see the offense to some serious damage to a team with high goals of getting to next level. As for the UM(thugville university) let be said that, that was one that got away from us. Still have a long road ahead of us...but I do believe and have always belived in my beloved "SEMINOLES".....next up USF. Keep winning boys.....
A great Nole fan a season ticket holder......

Great game FSU. BYU got beet fair & ssquare, albeit with a little help from courtesy of M. Hall & fumbles but a take away is a take away. (Including a piece of turf cut out by one of your FSU players). Good Luck to Coach Bowden and his team. Maybe with a little luck BYU & FSU will meet again in a Bowl game and (Don't throw away that piece of grass you took). I think BYU might like to see you again to reclaim it. --- GO BYU

To comment #130 by Stan, are you stupid? Florida State has THEE toughest schedule in all of college football...and I'm not just saying that... that's what the NCAA said. BYU is a nobody? I guess that means Oklahoma is a nobody too.

Play some defense. Christian Ponder would slice ND ass up. Norte Dame got a big ten schedule and can't even win Tennessee i don't even know where to start. One sec championship and one lucky ass ncaa championship. Yall suck all away across the board also. Good D. Terrible O. Tennessee get a QB. Go Noless!!!

!st much props to Oregan and FSU for beating my MWC teams, hell of a game. Unlike some of you, I will not make excuses for the loss. A loss is a loss, we were beat all the way around. Now its time to dust ourselves off and get back to the buisness at hand, and thats trying to get back into the NC title hunt. One loss means nothing. GO UTES!!!!!
