No. 2 Texas gets revenge against Texas Tech, 34-24

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Texas fans will call it revenge. The Longhorns were more likely to describe it as relief.

Colt McCoy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Dan Buckner in the fourth quarter that gave the Longhorns some room and No. 2 Texas beat feisty Texas Tech and their prolific new passer 34-24 Saturday night.

The pass to Buckner with nine minutes left put Texas ahead 31-17, but it was an otherwise shaky outing for last season’s runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

McCoy finished with 205 yards and two interceptions on 24 of 34 passing for the Longhorns (3-0, 1-0 Big 12). After the game, the senior revealed he missed practice on Tuesday because of flu-like symptoms that he was dealing with most of the week.

“We had to keep fighting as a team. Not everything is going to go our way,” said McCoy, who completed 15 of 18 in the second half, but also threw an interception in the red zone.

After Texas Tech (2-1, 0-1) spoiled the Longhorns’ national title hopes with a 39-33 win in Lubbock last season—on a touchdown with 1 second to play—a record crowd of 101,297 was looking to whoop it up for a 4-hour blowout behind McCoy & Co.

What they got was a hard-hitting first half in which neither team scored an offensive touchdown. When the fireworks finally cranked up in the second half, they watched as Red Raiders quarterback Taylor Potts would not let the Longhorns pull away.

“Survival,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “I’m proud of the way our guys grew up, the way they worked, and fought and hit.”

Potts’, the latest gunslinging quarterback to guide Texas Tech’s passing wizardry, finished with 420 yards and three touchdowns. But he also had two fourth quarter turnovers, including a fumble on a sack by Sergio Kindle to set up McCoy’s TD pass.

“I just speed rushed him,” Kindle said. “I timed up the snap well and the quarterback was there for the taking.”

Even after the big hit, Potts’ led a touchdown drive to keep the Red Raiders in the game.

“He’s really tough, and he didn’t let the hit affect him,” Texas Tech coach Mike Leach said. “Not many QBs can get hit really hard and come in the next series and not flinch.”

McCoy took his share of lumps too. On one of his first runs of a game, a defender met him at the line of scrimmage and knocked his helmet off. The drive stalled when he was sacked on the next play.

“It was one of the harder hitting games I’ve been around,” Brown said.

Jordan Shipley’s 46-yard punt return in the first quarter for Texas was the only time either team reached the end zone in the first half that ended 10-3.

Shipley caught the ball in the middle of the field, dashed straight ahead, then broke to his right and outran punter Donnie Carona to the corner. His momentum took him all the way to the massive live Longhorn mascot Bevo and he startled the big fella.

“Bevo surprised me. I looked up and there he was,” Shipley said. “I’m going to try to avoid Bevo from now on.”

The offenses got going in the third quarter.

Texas scored the first offensive touchdown on the first drive of the second half. McCoy converted three third downs with passes before Tre’ Newton scooted 19 yards up the middle for a 17-3 Texas lead.

“There was no panic. No one got nervous,” Newton said.

The Red Raiders immediately answered with Potts’ throwing the first of two touchdowns to Lyle Leong, who was wide open after beating cornerback Chykie Brown on a fake for a 14-yarder.

Leach tried to catch the Longhorns off guard with an onside kick, but Texas recovered at the Red Raiders’ 47. Given the short field, McCoy found Buckner with a completion across the middle to the Texas Tech 1 before Cody Johnson punched it in for the touchdown.

Potts was getting better as the game wore on. The Red Raiders marched right down the field to get back within a touchdown on Potts’ 10-yard TD pass to Leong again.

“Texas Tech is always going to have a good quarterback and receivers that catch everything,” Texas safety Earl Thomas said. “It’s not surprising they gave us a good game.”

After picking apart the Texas defense, Potts gave up two turnovers in the fourth that swung the game.

The first came when Kindle pressured Potts in the end zone and forced a bad pass across the middle that went right to Texas safety Earl Thomas. The drive didn’t end up hurting the Red Raiders when McCoy threw his second interception.

Potts lamented those mistakes and Texas Tech’s 14 penalties.

“We’d get on a roll offensively and then get a penalty and go right back where we started,” Potts said. “We tried to beat Texas and ourselves in the first half. In the second half, we just tried to beat Texas.”

All I hear from you tech fans is myyyyyyyyy @#$% hurts. You got beat so stfu. We proved that you beating us was a fluke. Quit crying about the officials, if ya'll were actually good you wouldn't have to cry about them. We played like ass and still beat ya'll. Oh and John you know nothing about rookie QB Garrett Gilbert. Dude is a beast, led Lake Travis to 2 state titles. He has a cannon for an arm, even right now I bet he would make potts look like a high school kid. You won't win next year just like you didn't win this year. The commentators may have called last years game the greatest but I think Texas vs USC was the greatest game. Keep dreaming you Tech fans maybe you will actually be better than Texas one of these years.

saturday was the greatest defensive game I have ever seen our RED RAIDERS play. Holding a top 5 teams running back to under 100 yards away from the JONES gotta be the most impressive thing our defense has done and it was only the third game as a matter of fact I think that was the first time it has ever happend. Somebody correct me if im wrong. AWESOME CHANGE WITH THE WRECK'EM DEFENSE RUFKIN BUT PLEASE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN WAIT FOR THE SNAP AND PROTECT OUR QUATERBACK. RUNNINGBACKS HOLD THE BALL AND PLEASE GET PAST THE LINE OF SCRIMAGE FOR ATLEAST +6 YARDS A CARRY. AWESOME GAME POTTS AND COMPANY. MIKE LEACH WE WILL BE LOST WITHOUT YOU PLEASE STAY YOUR DINASTY HAS JUST BEGUN. PLEASE DONT MAKE A NAME FOR YOURSELF AND JUST LEAVE STAY FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS BECAUSE I SMELL ROSES TASTE ORANGES AFTER MY TOSTITO BOWL. WE WANT A CRYSTAL BALL UNDER YOUR NAME IT'S WELL DESERVED IN THE TROPHY CASE YOU REMODELED. SLAY THEM COUGARS AND THROW THEM OFF THE SHIP. GO RAIDERS

    Wow
    great game
next year UT comes to Lubbock with a rookie QB and Potts will be seasoned.
When Tech wins, it won't be revenge. It will be just like this year - one win in the season.

Last year - no that was different. UT was #1 and Tech was #7. Tech wins and both the game and the play became instant history. The commentators said it was the greatest college game and you know what the play became - the play of the year. Then UnderArmour sponsored the Tech football team and every time you see their commercial, you see the field with the Tech football team surrounded by the fans and the slogan - Not in my house. Oh and they show THE CATCH too. Now thats special - don't ya think.

Congrats on another bull crap win UT. Wonder how much money these refs our getting to call such a bull @#$% game. It was very clear that it was a helmet to helmet hit, but I guess when you have deep pockets its okay for the rules to be thrown out the window. By the way, UT MIGHT win out the Big 12, but they will never even sniff a national championship. Florida will crush UT if they make it to the national championship.

Ok really? I read some of the blogs on here. I would have to say for the hype of this game, it was in the top 10 of the worst called games I have ever seen. I am a outsider looking in. I am neither a UT or TT fan but figured it would be a good game. The refs took this game out of control. The hit on Potts was not the only BAD thing that happened. What about the one where the ref waited 15-20 seconds to throw the flag after the crowd boo'd for ever? If you say that the helmet to helmet was not intentional then you was not watching the same game I saw. The tackle never put a hand on the QB till after he hit him with his head. Watch the replay! It is funny to see everyone trying to defend the refs and UT on this game. It was poor officiating. If Colt McCoy had got hit like that I bet you a money the flags would have flown from everyone around..... But Potts gets his head taken off and a ref standing 10 feet from him see's nothing? Please! Hats off to Shippley... Hats off to Potts..... Hats off to whoever paid the refs....

UT won because of the crooked officials. Just like every other time Tech has played in Austin for the past decade. There is no telling how much money changes hands between UT alums and the officiating crew. Unbelievable. And becoming predictable. Every two years, Tech gets screwed in Austin.

i respect texas as an sec fan, i have pulled for them on many occations, i like mcccoy, shippley and coach brown. that said, if you have watched their last 2 games, and are honest with yourselves, they have not looked great, no team has at this point in my opinion. i think everyone will lose 1 game, and if you want to be in the hunt with 1 loss, you better lose now.

Also, I've been going to UT games all my life and can never remember one game where UT fans were even allowed to rush the field. Its always been against policy for as long as I can remember, I mean hell, we weren't even allowed to rush in '98 after we beat #6 aTm while we were unranked. At the same time, Ricky broke the NCAA rushing record. Can anyone let me know if the fans actually did rush the field?

Trish, its football. Refs blew calls on both sides, TT has been notorious for holding our d-line year after year but they're rarely called. Its football, thats how things go. I don't blame all the missed holding calls on Orakpo last year, because UT should have taken care of business and not even allowed the oppportunity for the final play with C-tree to occur. Don't make weak excuses, its pathetic.

i knew this would b a good close game! both teams fought hard but UT pulled the win out. everyone is talkin bout the hit potts got and that a flag should have been called and that it was on purpose and all that jazz. 1 thing is that kindle didnt see potts and think hey let me go and try and put this dood down for good! this hit helmet to helmet hit was not on purpose! the last thing any football player wants to do is end some ones carreer for good! yes their should have been a flag throw but their wasnt, lets move on!

potts is a great QB and will only get better and he cont to play! both teams always play good and hard against each other, and the fact that this was a hard hittin game shocks no UT or TT fans. the fact that ppl are also talkin about how texas stormed the field after the win and that we dont have class, give me a break guys. it wasnt the fact that we beat an unracked team or that we blew them, the fans ran down because of what happened last yr. i personally would have stayed in my seat but thats just me.

just give it up to texas for win and for tech for playin hard! both teams are really good except UT came out with the win this yr. good luck next yr tech, see you in lubbock!

i don't really like the "helmet to helmet" penalty either. i feel that 90% of them are unintentional. that said, if its gonna be a rule, they should enforce it consistantly.

As for a helmet 2 helmet by Kindle...when u are ready to destroy a qb who is sitting there, the last thing on ur mind, is the size of the guy who ur about to lay out!! Helmet to helmet is a garbage penalty, unless its on a wideout who is defenseless in air.. Even then I really dont like it because ITS FOOTBALL!!! This is coming from a ex QB...u get lit up u get lit up!!! Guess I am just old school and dont respect the new penalties.

Have to agree casey j, when I first saw the hit on Potts, I didn't even care for the fumble. I was immediately looking for the flag for helmet to helmet on the QB.

Great game, kudos to Tech for keeping it close. I agree with a few of the comments herethat the fumble caused by Kimble should have been a penalty. It was helmet to helmet on a QB. I mean, he hit Potts so hard in the head it knocked one of his contacts out of his eye! The cameras showed him putting it back in after the series. If the the QB was "there for the taking" as Kindle said, there is no reason he shouldn't have aimed 8 inches lower and drilled him in the chest instead of under the chin..... Unless he knew going helmet to helmet blindside on a QB would be more likely to cause a game changing fumble.

That being said, I still think UT would have won the game. UT will be in the national championship game, and Tech will crack the top 25 before the season is over. This game is usually pretty good in Lubbock, it was great to see Tech play well in Austin.

Not a UT or TT fan, but I have to say Shipley on the UT side and Potts for TT were both amazing! Shipley has to be the fastest white guy in the state of Texas. And Potts showed incredible poise standing in the pocket knowing he might be pounded at any time. Colt seems to bolt anytime the slightest amount of pressure gets to him.

UT's defense played about as hard-nosed as I've seen them, but TT's offense took every shot and got back up. Both were impressive.

    Very entertaining game!!
