AUBURN, Ala. (AP)—In a wild, rain-delayed game in which Auburn and West Virginia combined for more than 900 yards, a defensive player made the biggest play.

Craig Stevens intercepted a screen pass by West Virginia and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown with 3:41 left in the fourth quarter, and Auburn defeated the Mountaineers 41-30 Saturday night.

“We had a feeling they were going to run the screen sometime during that series, so I ended up going on a blitz that play,” Stevens said. “He lobbed it just enough for me to tip it and I got it in my hands. Once I got in my hands I had to get in the end zone.”

Chris Todd threw four touchdown passes as Auburn (3-0) came back from an early 14-0 deficit to take the lead for good with 12:07 to play on Todd’s 17-yard pass to Darvin Adams. It was Todd’s third touchdown pass to Adams, and it was set up by defensive tackle Jake Ricks’ interception at the West Virginia 19.

Auburn’s running game had dominated in the first two games, but Todd said it was time for the passing game to have a big night.

“We had some really good games running the ball of our last two games and West Virginia did a lot to take care of that. Because of their rushing pressure, we were able to put the ball in the air and put up some points,” Todd said.

Todd completed an 82-yard scoring pass to Mario Fannin to tie the game 27-27 midway through the third quarter. West Virginia took a 30-27 lead late in the third quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Tyler Bitancurt.

Todd’s four TD passes were the most by an Auburn quarterback since Daniel Cobb had four against Louisiana Tech in 2001.

The two teams combined for 909 yards of offense. Noel Devine rushed 15 times for 128 yards and three touchdowns for the Mountaineers (2-1).

The Mountaineers rushed for 207 yards and passed for 302, but the Auburn defense stiffened after taking the lead in the fourth quarter, intercepting West Virginia quarterbacks four times in the final period.

Despite the loss, Mountaineers head coach Bill Stewart said he was proud of his team for playing “a tough, physical football game.”

“I thought it was a heck of a game. I thought both sides played physical. Both sides played hard and I’m glad we got that football game under our belt. It’s over and we should have come out on top but we didn’t,” Stewart said. He said turnovers were a major reason for his team’s loss.

The start of the game was delayed for more than an hour by a powerful thunderstorm that hit the Auburn area shortly before the scheduled game time. Despite warnings that people should leave their seats because of the threat of lightning, about 15,000 boisterous fans in the Auburn student section, refused to move. They cheered and sang “Who’ll Stop The Rain,” some taking their shirts off, despite torrential rain that was falling so hard it was impossible to see across the field.

Auburn Coach Gene Chizik said the will showed by those fans gave his players an emotional boost.

“I would like to say that I wish I had 87,000 game balls because our fans were a huge reason we won that game and I want the to know it,” Chizik said.

“I am so proud of our guys because they had to fight and claw and scratch back to win it,” he said.

Stewart said he’s glad the start of the game was delayed.

“That lightning, we don’t mess with that and I am so glad that is the way college football is. It was the right thing to do and it did not hurt us,” Stewart said.

West Virginia linebacker J.T. Thomas said he felt like the Mountaineers were the better team, despite the loss.

“We kind of beat ourselves and we were the better team,” Thomas said. “I’m not saying Auburn is not a great team, but we kind of shot ourselves in the foot.”

West Virginia quickly silenced the Auburn fans after the rain delay as the Mountaineers jumped off to a 14-0 lead on their first two possessions. On their third play from scrimmage, Jarrett Brown connected with Bradley Starks for 58 yards to set up Devine’s 1-yard run.

On the Mountaineers next possession, Devine broke through the middle of the Auburn line and ran 71 yards untouched to the end zone. Brown threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Jock Sanders late in the first quarter.

Auburn fought back after the quick West Virginia start and only trailed 21-20 at halftime. Todd threw 4-yard and 16-yard touchdown passes to Adams in the first half and Wes Bynum kicked 46-yard and 42-yard field goals for Auburn.

West Virginia extended the lead on its first possession of the second half, driving 76 yards on eight plays, capped by Devine’s third score of the night, a 12-yard run.

Some years from now when football records for '09 are reviewed, the final result will show Auburn 41, WVU 30. No asterisks nor excuses. On the day of the game, the better team that day always wins. This game proved Auburn can pass if the run is taken away. The defense, which did so well in the earlier games, had their problems but I suspect that was because they were playing an opponent with great offensive weapons. A five turnover margin is hard to overcome but that generally relates to good defense with some influence from offensive mistakes. Auburn is young and somewhat thin in ranks but is obviously more talented than most folks thought they would be. This team has some of the appearances of the '93 squad -- new coach, thin ranks and some surprising results -- but it's a little too early to tell if they can finish comparably. Good luck to Auburn and Pitt, 2 teams that the pollsters are ignoring.

Auburn is weak in the linebacker, receiver corp and secondary, but Auburn is not weak in determination and heart. Give Auburn a couple of years and the depth issues will be corrected. The new coaching staff has corrected the divisiveness of last year. West Virginia will win a lot of games this year, probably more than we will, but the story between the two is in the book. 41-30, by whatever means.

I agree. WVU needs a coach. Nuff said. Stew is a great fatherly figure not a great ball coach. He has no balls. It hurts me to admit it but we miss Rich Fraud. We got faster and better athletes than when Rich Fraud was here and now we dont have the most important thing and that is coaching. Does anyone know when Logan Heastie will see the field? I thought he was top flight talent. Also Josh Jenkins got pushed around. I was so mad at watching the game two more times this morning to see if I missed anything and I certainly didnt miss watching Jenkins get shoved around like a JV'er. I am fired up about this. We were better but we made the worse decisions. Talent wise we were better than auburn. Auburn...tip of the cap to you for managing the game and not doing bone head decisions like we did.

wvhillbilly999 - Yeah, Jarrett Brown needs to protect the ball. I remember when he took over when Pat White went down in the S. Florida game in 2007.....he was doing the same thing and at one point they cut to White on the sideline motioning to Brown to tuck it away when he is in the open field.

That aside, I wouldn't put too much heat on the coaching. They did well with kickoff coverage, so they are working on correcting the problem areas. Brown will be fine....he just needs to remember to not try to force the ball into traffic and the receivers need to help him out as well (on one replay when they were showing him scrambling around in the backfield the receivers were standing around watching him instead working to give him an open look).

Hat's off to Auburn.....they didn't let getting behind early get them down and stuck it out.
As far as the 'eers go, it's nothing that can't be fixed. I just hope they tear that middle screen to the HB out of the playbook.

Give opponent 24 points off turnovers and you aren't going to win many games.

Sadly, it appears turnovers are the norm and not unusual this year for WV.

Brown carries the ball like a loaf of bread, so were lucky not to have turnovers off of scrambles. Aren't coaches supposed to teach players to protect the ball??????
Coaches of teams on the rest of the schedule will certainly go after the ball first and tackle second.

A lot of talent and lose, IMO reflects on coaching.

Sloppy play, IMO reflects on coaching.

that was a great game and to me the better team won the team who caused turnovers. defense wins games and causing turnovers is a big part of defense.

"The better team" doesnt turn the ball over SIX TIMES. WVU moved the ball well, and yeah, they looked good. But a "better team" finds a way to win, and even though WVU ran all over AU, the Tigers had no problems throwing the ball against the "Davey Crocketts". So, it's a toss up. And the Tigers didn't turn the ball over six times. So, I'd say the better team won.

The TO's were not gimme's. They were "forced" by the D. Brown under constant pressure made many, many plays from NOTHING. That, my friends, is luck. Many of WVU plays were sandlot football caused by the orig play being broken up by the AU D. WVU ran the ball very well against AU. Surprisingly well. That will cause AU problems later into the schedule.

A football team cannot live on big plays due to broken plays very long. They have to have plays that work. IF Brown goes down, WVU is toast.

Stews the guy the Moutaineers need. He does know how to coach. Don't blame him for the QB's mistakes. We would have one if he didn't try to act like Pat White. He don't have that kind of talent. Yes he knows how to throw the ball but those under handed tosses right infront of the defence wasn't a good choice for Brown. EERS will be back with a vengence next week guarenteed.

Good game Auburn. From a Bama fan just wanting you to know that I hate it when you guys are down. I want you and us at our best EVEY year when we play. Facing a one-sided game is not the Iron Bowl we have grown to love. For over 40 years now I have been a Bama Fan and always will be but you guys have kept our games close more than any other team and I want it to remain that way. Keep getting better and good luck to your team and new coach. We know how it feels with new coaches so just hang in there and good luck. Keep it strong for a good game at the Iron Bowl, the BEST BOWL GAME in the nation! Roll Tide and Go SEC!!!!!

    Hey Bob,
Auburn's kicker is Wes BYRUM, not Bynum.

As for the game, that was a great game to watch. Especially after the first four minutes.

And sorry, Coach Stewart, the better team was the one that DIDN'T commit six turnovers
