FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—In his third game as Matthew Stafford’s successor, Joe Cox joined him in the Georgia record book.

Cox threw five touchdown passes, tying a school mark and leading the No. 23 Bulldogs to a wild 52-41 victory over Arkansas on Saturday night. Georgia turned the ball over three times in the first half but moved the ball pretty much at will after that.

Stafford, the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL draft, is one of three other Georgia players to throw five touchdown passes in a game.

“It’s pretty cool,” Cox said. “It’s definitely not something I expected to happen. We didn’t know it was going to be a shootout like that, but if a team wants to make it a shootout, we’ve got to find a way to answer.”

Cox was 18 of 26 for 375 yards with an interception. It was the second straight high-scoring win for Georgia, which edged South Carolina 41-37 last weekend.

Ryan Mallett set two school records for Arkansas, throwing for 408 yards and five touchdowns. The Razorbacks (1-1, 0-1) led 35-34 in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs’ struggling defense held Arkansas to two short field goals the rest of the way.

“Especially in games like that, when we know we’re moving the ball and we can score points, when the defense holds them to a field goal that’s a win for us,” Cox said. “Those stops are huge.”

The teams fell short of the Southeastern Conference record of 104 points in a non-overtime game, set when South Carolina beat Mississippi State 65-39 in 1995. The lead changed hands four times in the third quarter alone.

After Mallett’s 2-yard touchdown toss to D.J. Williams put Arkansas up 35-34, Georgia needed only two plays to take the lead for good when Cox threw a 44-yard scoring pass to Orson Charles. After that, the Bulldogs (2-1, 2-0) lined up to go for 2. A penalty pushed the ball back, but with the Arkansas defense offering no resistance, Georgia went for 2 anyway from the 8-yard line.

Cox found A.J. Green open in the corner of the end zone for a 42-35 lead.

Green put the Bulldogs ahead 49-38 with a 28-yard touchdown catch with 10:46 left in the game. He finished with seven catches for 137 yards.

Georgia improved to 25-4 under coach Mark Richt in SEC opponents’ stadiums, although the Bulldogs looked shaky early, losing two fumbles and an interception.

“We’ve got to do a lot of things better,” Richt said. “We really need to stop turning the ball over and putting our defense in a bad spot.”

Arkansas led 21-10 in the second quarter and had just intercepted Cox near midfield when the Razorbacks suddenly lost their discipline. Razorbacks linebacker Jerry Franklin was called for two personal fouls and ejected, and Arkansas was called for an illegal block on the next play that wiped out a big gain.

“It’s a shootout,” Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said. “In a shootout, you have to make every play count.”

As Georgia was starting its next drive, the Razorbacks were hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Bulldogs then backed themselves up with a penalty of their own, but Richard Samuel found a gaping hole for an 80-yard touchdown run that turned the game around.

The Bulldogs gained 201 yards in the quarter and took the lead on a 25-yard pass from Cox to Green one play after Georgia converted on fourth down. The Bulldogs led 27-21 at halftime.

Greg Childs opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 40-yard touchdown catch for Arkansas. Cox answered with a 50-yard scoring strike to Tavarres King to put Georgia ahead 34-28.

Mallett threw for 161 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter. His 18-yard TD pass to Joe Adams opened the scoring. After Cox answered with a 21-yard scoring pass to Aron White, the Razorbacks ran a reverse on the ensuing kickoff and Cobi Hamilton returned it to the Georgia 48. Mallett found Jarius Wright for a touchdown on the next play.

Childs made it 21-10 with the catch of the night, a full-extension dive to haul in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mallett.

“They are playmakers and they showed that time and time again tonight,” Mallett said. “They made great plays when I got the ball anywhere near them.”

Childs caught five passes for 140 yards, and Wright added four receptions for 108 yards.

The teams committed 25 penalties for 193 yards.

cyberworld you better keep living in your little cyber world because it's not going to happen in real life buddy. It sounds like you guys are still bloody, bruised, and battered from last years loss. I'll be laughing when your team comes staggering into Athens and trembling in fear Between the Hedges.

Seems to me this arrogent idiot, Derrick is the one who needs to learn somithing about football. Any team that gives up an average of 34 points to three mediocre teams has a bad defense.....football 101.....duh.

Petrino is one of the greatest offensive minds in the game. It wasn't coaching that lost the game last night. We just have no secondary. End of.

We made Cox look good, hopefully he doesn't get the big head. It will be a lot tougher for them against good defenses. I think Arkansas can score on anyone.

you people on here who shyt on Coach Richt and Martinez don't know a damn thing about the game and you have never coached a day in your life. there is a reason why the play the deep and want to keep everything underneath and make teams have to put together 10, 12 and 15 play drives to score. Chances are they can't do it consistently Martinez is doing fine, I would rather have a time try to dink and dunk the ball on my and put long drives together, verses play man coverage all game and go up top on me with big plays when i have a young secondary. If you all forgotten that this is the SEC? Arguably the best conference in the nation which often displays the best players in the nation? Teams are going to make plays regardless of how talented your defense is, the key is to minimize the big plays and make stops when you have to. Which is exactly what UGA is doing. In this conference the team that makes the least mistakes and commits the least turnovers wins period. It use to be that you could count up easy wins verses Miss, Miss st., Vandy and Kentucky but they have also improved. Learn the damn game before you start calling for someones job you fools

Dan Dawg, if you are this upset after the Dawgs won two of their first three games, I am worried that you may have a heart attack after the Dawgs lose more as their schedules gets tougher. I love the Dawgs but if you expect any coach to dominate a conference which includes Florida, LSU, Alabama and Auburn every year, then you are dreaming.

Go Dawgs! yea the defense needs to step up and the offense needs to stop turning over the ball and putting the defense in bad situations i agree but the dawgs seem to find a way to fight and win looking forward to the fla game! and hopefully the dawgs will learn from these last two games and imporve so we can beat lsu, tn, fla.

and for all you joe cox naysayers i say he is getting better every game and to hell with you!

Mark Richt, get your head out of your butt. You have become too comfortable as the head coach of Georgia. As UGA fans, we are not happy with 9 or 10 wins each year. We want to compete for the championship every year. This will never happen with you. We need a coach with killer instinct. You doesn't have it.
Watch a complete replay of the game and listen to the announcers calling the plays before Arkansas ran them. They were right about 90% of the time. Yet, Martinez could not figure their offense out. HE MUST BE REPLACED TOMORROW, not at the end of the season.
Sit the players down that are committing turn overs and foolish penalties. Make them EARN playing time by showing they can play under control.

JC - I respectfully disagree with your opinion. Richt turned the program around almost immediately and the Dawgs were ranked #2 in the nation behind LSU a short time ago. More great athletes want to play for Florida and USC and that helps them reload each and every year. I will have to say that I am somewhat disappointed in this year's pass defense so far, but we are 2-0 in SEC conference play.

Post 15 says that Arkansas' defense was better than Georgia's. I think I'm a little bit more stupider for reading that. See, stupider isn't even a real word. I could have put up Joe Cox's numbers against that defense. I think Helen Keller could have put up close to his numbers. I'm just saying.

I have to laugh when people talk how great Mark Richt is. He recruits great ATHLETES (not football players), his players constantly get in trouble, his teams lack DISCIPLINE (penalty after penalty-usually personal fouls), he never is in position to play for anything meaningful (think he does?- when has he played for a national title? lots of SEC schools are (esp Fla), he is 2-6 against Fla-soon to be 2-7, he hasn't and won't win the big thing- until you can win the trifecta (beat Fla, Auburn, and GT in the same year) you aren't going to play for any title, and he is a great Christian guy and everybody's buddy (esp the players), but I would rather have a guy who is above the players. Think Nick Saban jumps off the high dive with his buddies (the players)? All in all, Richt can't hold a candle to Georgia's coach- VINCE DOOLEY. Add ERK RUSSELL (the greatest assistant coach ever at UGA and the greatest motivator ever) and that is coaching. Richt personifies the win 10 game season, but don't play for anything meaningful. I went to UGA in the early 80's (Hershel days) and am back at UGA now to finish my degree, so I have been apart of both sides. Think Richt is so great? HMMMMMMM Florida could possibly win a third National Title in 4 years. And Richt? He is rebuilding again after last year' FAILURE. Wake up Dawg fans.

Finally glad to see offense again... However, the same thing I was screaming about last year has not fixed itself. That would be replacing Martinez at Def Cor. Richt is too loyal to a fault and they need to make a change....You must have a pass rush and mant to man def to play well in the SEC..We havent had that for a couple years now.

Unless the Dawgs play better pass defense, they will lose against those teams superior to South Carolina and Arkansas. I have never seen more wide open receivers than I did these last two weeks. At least Cox had to make perfect passes to make completions. The Carolina and Arkansas receivers were mostly wide open. I believe that the last two weeks there have been about 52 completed passes against the GA defense and only a few quarterback sacks. I am a diehard Dawgs fan, but we need vast improvements on pass defense, penalties and turnovers. Having said that, I am proud that they found a way to win these last two weeks.

Two things to improve: stop shooting yourselves in the foot with bad pass coverage and stop shooting yourself in the foot with stupid penalties.

I'm proud of any running back who is only 18 and is not intimidated by the defenses in the SEC. Way to go Samuels...just hold onto the ball with a rock arm next time. Cox...too bad you had the flu against Ok. St. Martinez have you put a 'home for rent' sign in your yard yet? You know you can't sell the place.

My Dawgs are awesome, even when they screw up!! And Mark Richt is the best thing ever to happen to Georgia football. Win, lose, or draw, he's the best man for the job. He cares about the whole young man, not just the football!!!!!!

Love you Dawgs, but it's looking like another year of an undisciplined Mark R. team (penalties, turnovers, worst defensive secondary in the history of Georgia football, and an almost nonexistent pass rush. As much as I love my Dawgs, it's shaping up to be a long year.
