No. 1 Florida holds off Kffin, Tennessee 23-13

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin jogged to midfield, briefly shook hands with Florida’s Urban Meyer and then darted toward the locker room.

Kiffin kept his head up the whole way. Who could blame him? After all, he had more reason to be encouraged than embarrassed after his Southeastern Conference opener against the top-ranked Gators.

Tim Tebow ran for 76 yards and a touchdown, Caleb Sturgis kicked three field goals and Florida eked out a 23-13 win over the Volunteers on Saturday.

It wasn’t the beatdown many expected. It gave Kiffin reason to believe Tennessee (1-2, 0-1) is on the right track. It gave Meyer a big enough scare that it could help the defending national champions the rest of the way.

“It wasn’t how we envisioned or hoped,” said Tebow, whose streak of games with a TD pass ended at 30. “But it’s a win and it’s good enough for all of us.”

The Gators (3-0, 1-0) won their fifth straight in the series and set a school record with their 13th consecutive victory, now the longest in major college football after losses by Utah and Southern California.

Florida started counting down the days for this one more than nine months ago, right after Kiffin vowed to sing “Rocky Top” all night long after being the Gators. Kiffin also riled up Florida with his false allegations of NCAA violations by Meyer.

Kiffin ran out of the tunnel just before the opening kick and had 90,000 Florida fans screaming, pointing and yelling obscenities at him. One guy even tried to torment Kiffin with a poster of Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, Kiffin’s former boss. Kiffin said afterward that his plan from Day 1 was to take the focus of his players and put it on him.

“It worked perfectly,” Kiffin said. “It took all the pressure off the players. We played the No. 1 team in the nation with no pressure on them. … It was all on me. We were 30-point underdogs in this place and it really helped them go out and play ball.”

Kiffin refused to claim a moral victory, though. So singing “Rocky Top” will have to wait at least another year. He didn’t even consider humming the tune.

“No, we lost a game,” Kiffin said. “Maybe I’ll come back here for basketball and sing it for (coach) Bruce (Pearl).”

Florida’s postgame celebration was about as conservative as its game plan. There was no trash talk and no one trying to rub it in. The Gators were clearly disappointed with their performance, even though they had reason to celebrate.

Tebow, return man Brandon James and Florida’s defense gave the Vols fits for the third straight year.

Tebow completed 14 of 19 passes for 115 yards, although he also had two turnovers that Tennessee turned into 10 points. James returned three kickoffs for 97 yards, helping set up Florida’s first 13 points, but he also dropped a pass in the end zone.

And the defense harassed Jonathan Crompton and twice held the Vols to short field goals when they were in position for touchdowns. Ahmad Black intercepted Crompton on fourth down with about 2 minutes to play, ending Tennessee’s last chance at pulling off the upset.

“I’m not happy,” said Crompton, who threw three interceptions and fumbled a snap last week against UCLA. “Don’t want to lose if you’re a competitor. Hate losing more than you like winning. Look at the positives. Got a chance to capitalize early and late.”

Tebow took over down the stretch.

After his two nifty, 4-yard runs, the Gators looked like they would put the game away. But Tebow fumbled at the Vols 4, and Tennessee scored seven plays later to make it 23-13. It was Tebow’s second turnover of the game. He threw an interception in the first half that Tennessee turned into a field goal.

The Gators had some excuses for their lackluster offense. Receiver Deonte Thompson missed the game because of a hamstring injury. Running back Jeff Demps played with a 101-degree fever. And tight end Aaron Hernandez had to be isolated Friday because of flu-like symptoms.

Meyer put it all on Tebow, who ran 24 times.

His best plays were short gains late. He started right on a third-and-3, looked to throw and then cut back left and headed toward the sideline. He eluded Wes Brown’s grasp, then tiptoed down the sideline for a 4-yard gain. Instead of possibly being forced to punt, the Gators scored a touchdown to make it 23-6.

“Unbelievable,” Meyer said. “Vintage Tebow. He had a hell of a day. … He kind of took that game over on that drive. That was one of the best plays. I can’t wait to see that on film. He was this far from out of bounds and got the first down.”

On the next possession, Tebow used a nasty spin move to escape All-American safety Berry and Gerald Williams, then hit Dennis Rogan so hard the defender’s helmet flew off.

“I don’t think he’s human,” Kiffin said. “I really don’t. There were times when I asked (the coaches in the booth) on the headset, ‘Is he ever going to wear down?’ But he never does. Our defense worked hard and you just prayed to get it to third-and-4, because if it was third-and-3, he was going to put his head down and run over people.”

Tebow and the Gators had their heads down afterward. Meyer even said he had to lighten the mood in the locker room.

“I think there’s so much pressure on this team to perform perfectly, which is good,” Meyer said. “I’d rather be on that end than on, ‘Boy, great job. We lost by 10.’ I don’t want to do that. There’s a lot of pressure on these guys and I felt it in there.”

Dearest thug. I was not the one who began slamming strength of schedule, I was defending UT's schedule as you were defending Florida's. I seem to remember that I complimented your team as far as even saying they were probably the best at this point in the season. Yes, UT has many issues at this time. Firstly, quarterback. Would have been interesting to see how we would have done if we had a quarterback that could at least hit his recievers(not in the side of the head either haha) But we dont and that is our problem, not anyone elses. It just bumfuzzles me how people can not admit that we gave your team a little run for your money. I look forward to when we do have a quarterback that is capable of complimenting the rest of the offense we have. Makes for good rivalry. As for the remark reguarding paycheck comparison. I ask forgiveness. In todays world, one should be happy they are blessed with a job and a constant paycheck. Still proud to be a VOL, and am one of the true fans that will continue to pull for them even when times dont look so good. I have to say, it is good to see so many SEC teams at the top of the rankings. Shows what kind of conference our two teams are playing in.. Hope Teebow gets well. Seems like a good kid. Especially like his values off the field.

Mr. Thug, I love the way you strayed away from answering the comments about the patsy teams the gators are playing and also the amount of away games they are playing. The same as UT I believe. I did not say UT should have won the game, I said they at least gave them a competitive game. I am not the one who started bragging about the strength of Florida's schedule compared to UT's. It is about the same, and if you, and you will count UT as one of the patsy teams to play, that means at least half of the Gators games are against sub par teams. Speaks well for strength of schedule. Oh well, I guess I better get back to my Pizza delivery car.(compare checks anytime you want)

Kudos to MONTE Kiffin for calling a good defense against the Gators. UT played tough and represented regular SEC football as it should be.

A full outright laugh to LANE Kiffin if he thinks anyone is going to believe his BS that his stupid comments of 6-8 months ago were designed to deflect pressure off of his player... Right! They were just dumb comments regardless. Lane Kiffin didn't do anything other than let his dad call the defense and let a good O-line and RB corp attack. Beyond that, he looked pretty lost in what his options actually were. Had not the Gators fumbled on the 6 yard line in the 4th quater, the final score probably would have been 30-6. Regardless of the score, it was a good, hard played football game!

Again, UT played a great game and the Gators came away with the win. Everything else is just noise!

Hey gators, congratulations on representing the SEC well in the national polls. The fact that Kiffin took the Vols into the swamp and did so well with basically the same team that was a disaster last year has to be congratulated too. It makes you wonder, if you are honest, what he can do when the cupboard is restocked. For what ever reason, Fulmer had gone down hill coaching, recruiting and motivating.

Tim Tebow should just enter the NFL as a running back; doesn't seem he is trying to develop any QB skills. He reminds me of John Riggins; big , fast, white boy!

Hey Jason post # 357 Tebow was called for intentional grounding on the drive right after Demps had moved the ball to the 16 yard line. Ben Martin sacked Tebow and he tried to throw the ball away as he was going down. Later in the game Crompton threw the ball into the Gators sideline, ( it seems to be his best pass- throwing to the other team), and for some strange reason he didn't get called for intentional grounding. I'm sure the refs know Tennessee needs all the help they can get! So next time you watch the Vols lose why don't you push the goat or the chickens out of the way so you can see the T.V. IDIOT! Hello Mr. Snott Post#355 First of all I don't pay attention to Florida's schedule because their usually gonna win regardless of who they play. What's the last good team that the Vols have beaten. Yeah I know it's been so long I can't remember either! Florida has 22 deep starters on defense that returned from last year and about 8 starters on offense. So get your facts straight idiot. I watched the game and I was never scared that Tennessee was going to beat the Gators. Wishful thinking on your part I guess! Kiffin's offensive calls on their last scoring drive were fannnntastic. Run, run, run, run, well, you get the picture. He played to lose just like when he was with the Raiders. Tennessee played from behind ( as usual) so there sure wasn't anything to be scared of. Vols fans are so fanatical that they embrace losses like it's a good thing. Five straight and still counting baby! Why don't you all quit crying and saying "If Florida didn't have all those returning players then the Vols would have won". What would you like them to do? Let the practice team play so the Vols can only lose by 7 maybe? Since you are a proud UT graduate I'll make sure to tip YOU better the next time YOU deliver a pizza.

I guess Horns fan(Herbert E i'm looking at you) missed the part where Ole Miss curb stomped that soft POS Red Raiders team from Lubbock. Couple that with the fact that Texas could barely handle a weak Ohio State team in the Fiesta Bowl and it's easy to conclude they weren't ready for a juggernaut like Florida, maybe this year they will be.

Michigan loves to tout their wins over the SEC in non BCS bowl games. Bless their little old hearts. They are completely oblivious to how irrelevant their program has become. It's too bad they'll never be good enough to play the top SEC teams in the bowl games that really matter. They'll just have to settle for hyping up those Capital One Bowl(and other crap bowls) victories, it's all they've got. In the mean time Florida will continue to compete for BCS Championships with the occassional rebuilding year thrown in between. Michigan fan doesn't know what that feels like. Never will. They only have dreams of getting to play that 4th or 5th best SEC team in a bowl game with absolutely no significance. They're nothing more than a mid major, a 16 seed in March Madness. Soft and weak.

First of all who does USC play that is ranked? And why do u guys keep bringing up previous sesons' outcomes? The rankings that come out weekly don't even consider what happened last year. The rankings show exactly what they should. In college football the present is all that matters and presently the Florida Gators are #1. End of story. The undisputed best team in college football right now, in the toughest conference, with the best offense so far is Florida. Opinions don't matter just facts.

Hello Mr. Thug Post #354. I take it that you have not looked at Florida's schedule. Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International. Oh, I guess these are big name teams in themselves. And as far as away games, how many does Florida have? I believe I count 4 also. Soooooo, what is your point. I grant it, Florida has a good team, a great quarterback, and probably is ranked correctly at this time. How many players from last years team is returning? I believe they mentioned 22 on the television. Will be curious to see what happens when they have the big exodus of players. As far as calling the Vols cowards, It looked like the so called "cowards" gave the gators a little scare. So I guess Florida trembled at the hands a little Saturday at the hands of cowards. Anyway, I have, am, and always will be proud to be not only a Vols fan, but a UT alumni also. Before you start shooting off at the mouth about strength of schedule and so forth, you need to study the facts on your side of the argument before you make yourself look like an idiot.

Western Kentucky at home, Ohio at home, Memphis at home, & only 4 road games this year, seems like the Vols are the cowards who don't want to play anybody. But then again, maybe the schedule will be too much for the Vols this year. GO GATORS (the # 1 ranked team in the nation.
