SEATTLE (AP)—Southern California’s Stafon Johnson stayed face down on the turf. Jubilant Washington players and fans stepped over him, on their way to a riotous purple party that stretched from goal line to goal line.
USC coach Pete Carroll was forced to watch it all, glumly waiting for Steve Sarkisian to emerge from the throng to congratulate his protege. The post-Ohio State funk Carroll began warning his guys about seven days earlier—in the locker room in Columbus, Ohio—leveled the Trojans again.
Jake Locker improvised his Huskies to a steely, 68-yard drive that ended on Erik Folk’s 22-yard field goal with 3 seconds remaining, and the Huskies’ fired-up defense stymied fill-in quarterback Aaron Corp and No. 3 USC in a 16-13 victory Saturday.
USC has now lost to an unranked team each of the last four seasons.
“Washington wasn’t the better team. They just outplayed us,” said a shrugging Joe McKnight, who ran for 100 yards on 11 carries with USC’s only touchdown. “Clearly, we have superior athletes. But hard work beats athleticism any day.”
Carroll’s team was stung by eight penalties, an 0-for-10 conversion rate on third down and three turnovers inside the Washington 35.
“We didn’t get any better from last week,” he said. “I’m not doing a good enough job of making the points of how we win.”
One year after Oregon State upset USC in the Pac-10 opener following an impressive Trojans win over Ohio State, an old friend upset Carroll’s powerful team. Washington coach Steve Sarkisian was his offensive coordinator before taking over in Seattle in January, trying to rebuild a team that had the Pac-10’s first 0-12 season last year.
“It’s unbelievable,” Sarkisian said. “It’s a great moment for our program and hopefully sends a message of where we’re headed.”
The Trojans are headed back to playing catch-up in the race for a national title.
Quarterback Matt Barkley, who directed an epic game-winning drive to beat the Buckeyes 18-15 in Columbus, Ohio, last week, watched USC’s latest stunning upset from the sideline. The 19-year-old freshman was out with a sore shoulder, yielding this week’s star status to Locker for one of the most memorable wins in Washington’s proud but recently buried history.
The Trojans were also without All-American safety Taylor Mays. He missed his first career game because of the right knee ligament he sprained against the Buckeyes.
“It’s a slap in the face,” Mays said of the loss in his hometown.
USC (2-1, 0-1), nearly a three-touchdown favorite, was held to its fewest points since a 13-9 loss to UCLA on Dec. 2, 2006, by a defense that allowed Idaho 412 yards last week.
Washington (2-1, 1-0) came in riding a 10-game losing streak in Pac-10 games. It had broken a conference record-tying 15-game overall skid last week. The Huskies lost 56-0 at USC last season, the biggest rout in the 80-game history of the series. Locker missed that blowout with an injury, but was 21 for 35 for 237 yards while absorbing four sacks Saturday.
This is the highest-ranked team beaten by Washington in Seattle since Nov. 14, 1981, also against third-ranked USC. It was the Huskies’ first win over the Trojans since 2001, Carroll’s first season at USC.
“I can’t really describe it,” Locker said, his voice hoarse following emotional tears. “It’s an amazing feeling to go through what all of us have gone through and to experience what everyone wants to experience when they play college football.”
The Trojans were up 10-0 and outgaining Washington 133-15 just 10 minutes into the game. They then began hurting themselves with mistakes, again allowing a team that seemed to be no match for all their blue chip recruits and future NFL draft picks to beat them.
Last season, it was Oregon State. The year before that it was Stanford. The year before that it was UCLA, when USC had a chance to play for the national title.
Corp, a sophomore making his first career start, was 13 for 22 for 110 yards with one interception.
“I felt I was prepared. I just didn’t execute,” Corp said, solemnly.
Carroll had Barkley warming up behind the bench in the fourth quarter but decided not to use him because the freshman’s couldn’t get his shoulder loose.
“We didn’t throw the ball very well today. It was obvious,” Carroll said. “We couldn’t get the ball down the field very much. We’ve rarely been in that situation.”
Still, USC was in position to pull it out.
McKnight took off on a 34-yard run—and receiver Ausberry recovered his fumble at the end of the sprint—to get USC to the Huskies 22 while down 13-10 with 6 minutes left. But Donald Butler, who had 12 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble, stopped Johnson on third-and-6. That forced the Trojans to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Jordan Congdon that tied it at 13 with 4 minutes remaining.
USC’s offensive players angrily yanked their chin straps off for not taking the lead.
Locker, who came to Washington three seasons ago a much-hyped freshman much like Barkley, made the Trojans pay.
On third-and-15 with 3:03 left, Locker connected with Jermaine Kearse for 21 yards on a rollout play. Locker rolled out for 4 yards to convert another third down to the USC 39 with a minute left.
Locker then avoided a rush, and fired 19 yards to Kearse, to the 16. Locker and Kearse shared a leaping chest bump, old Husky Stadium swayed, and a roughing-the-passer penalty put the Huskies at the 8 with 33 seconds left.
One running play later, Washington called time out with 7 seconds left to put Folk in position. The sophomore from Woodland Hills, Calif., nailed it down the middle.
USC tried multiple laterals on the final play, the kickoff, but couldn’t get out of its own end.
After gaining 223 yards in the first half, USC had just 80 in its first three drives after halftime against a defense of which its own coordinator, former Trojans defensive coordinator Nick Holt, said this week: “There are deficiencies there with personnel.”
Not this week.

its all about the Huskies lined up
the ball gets hiked
the field goal kicker strikes the ball
it goes through the posts
the refs hands go up
field goal Huskies
Oh, I'm not a Huskies fan - just love it when a mediocre team loses thats over rated like USC does every year...

i said if they keep playing the way theyve been playing .... thats an IF .... but IF they do .... they very well could be 8-0 in conference when they face Cal, and in that case ... even if they lose they own the tiebreaker against USC. im speaking hypothetically .... realistically ..... i think we will lose 3 or 4 this season, total ... not just in conference.

speaking of fumbles though .... thats exactly why we beat USC. i cannot believe how well our defenders stripped the ball from USCs ball carriers. all four of USCs fumbles werent from big hits ..... they were flat out strips. Husky defenders were stabbing their hands at the ball every time they tackled a USC carrier. i cant remember the last time i saw a Husky defense cause four fumbles, we only got two of them ..... but they were both huge.
i tried telling LSU fans who were worried after the Washington game because of how bad Washington sucked last year that the 2009 Huskies were a completely different team. they dont look the same, play the same, hit the same, pass the same ..... they do NOTHING the same. even after how we played LSU and beating USC .... people question them. this is a good football team, not a great one .... but these Dawgs could very well end up top 20, maybe even top 15. a long way to go ....... but if they play the way theyve been playing .... we might be playing Cal for the Rose Bowl in the last game of the regular season.

That said, LSU's touchdown with 3 minutes left was with Wash playing to stop them Wash U's drive and touchdown with 00 on clock was against soft/prevent/it doesn't matter D. And every team could have it's would've, could've, should've stuff. Fact is, LSU made that interception, etc... Wash U def put up yards, but it's the scoreboard that wins games.
As LSU fan, I wasn't knocking you...you are 'spot on' on commentary. It just made me more excited about LSU.

without our QB on offense (Barkley), and our QB on defense (Mays), who woulda thought it'd be WR Ronald Johnson, and his vertical threat speed, that we would be missing most right now?.. noticed that McKnight was hobbled from time-to-time with a leg injury of sorts.. anyways, hope everyone gets healthy soon!!..
seems like the healthy receivers and running backs had a hard time holding on to the ball.. many dropped balls (wonder about TE McCoy's hands sometimes), two fumbles lost (Johnson, Havili) and McKnight fumbled also but was lucky to have it recovered by a teammate.. None of this is Corp's fault, obviously
when you can't pass, you have no choice but to run, and a good D-coordinator (Holt) will know this immediately (props to Sark and Holt, former SC staffers who knew Carroll’s conservative tendencies), so they would "stack" the box and dared SC to throw..
SC was too one-dimensional and predictable, yet they are so loaded with talent that they still had a chance to win (a lesser team would have been down at least 2 TD's).. why not implement an offense which caters to Corp's strength as a runner? why not implement the current fad "wildcat" scheme and "direct snap" to a McKnight, Gable, or D. Williams? Carroll & friends made it too easy for the UW Huskies (who had already been tested by LSU)..
finally, what about the defensive play's called on USC's part, at the end of the game.. rather than bring pressure by "stacking" the line, Carroll decides to drop his players back into coverage - I don't care how good you are, if you give a good QB time to throw or scramble, he will make the necessary plays EVERY single time.. the offense will always have the advantage over the defense because they know where the ball is supposed to go, and they have potentially 3 attempts at it..
this is equivalent to what Carroll did against Texas, and V Young, in the Rose Bowl, on the final drive of the game.. Carroll should have "stacked" the line and forced Young to throw under pressure and no time (then, if he still beats you, at least he did it outside of his comfort zone and would deserve all the credit he got!).. but nooo, Carroll & Co virtually rolled the red carpet for Young instead..
and what about Carroll's decisions in the Stanford game a couple of years ago?.. how do you NOT take Booty out of the game when he has a BROKEN finger on his THROWING hand (especially when you have a very capable and talented 2nd string QB like M Sanchez on deck)?.. it occurred prior to half time, giving Carroll time to employ an emergency game plan - they were playing STANFORD for god's sake!!
seems like Carroll does well versus the great teams, in bowl games for example, because he has a ton of talent, and weeks upon weeks to prepare.. but given a short period to get ready, week to week for example, for an opponent, it seems like even the weakest of teams have a chance.. I'm not an expert but I do know this can't continue to occur - not if USC wants to maintain their status as a national powerhouse (which they are, still, IMHO!!)..
all right, I definitely needed that, but enough venting for now.. (oh, and by the way, the WSU Coug's don't stand a chance next weekend!!)

It takes a "perfect storm" (key injuries, untimely turnovers, dumb penalties, conservative play-calling etc), similar to Stanford two years ago, to beat USC..
The Huskies played a solid game, the Trojans didn't, and, needless to say, this was my upset pick of the week (taking the line, not straight up – b/c I still thought USC would win!).. was it raining? did it make the ball THAT slippery? SC ball carriers had a difficult time holding on to the rock today..
Barkley, Mays, McKnight might have been banged up for the game but I believe it is the horrible offensive/defensive play-calling, which failed to take advantage of Corp's scrambling abilities and pressure Locker on the last drive, which ultimately did the Trojans in..
Props to the USC defense - they were stellar, as always.. allowing a fired-up Husky offense, led by one of the PAC-10’s top QBs and a noisy home crowd, 16 points, is nothing to be ashamed of (LSU allowed 23)..
Props also to the less-than-100% McKnight for producing outstanding rushing numbers (100 yds w/ only 11 carries) against a solid UW defensive effort.. while playing within a RB rotation, he has managed to keep pace w/ the top backs in the PAC-10, including Best (CAL), Grigsby (AZ), Rodgers (OSU), and Gerhart (Stan)..
As it stands, USC is no longer in championship contention but..
you know what they say, "if you ARE going to lose, it's best to do so EARLY in the season" as the Trojans now have.. this gives them the opportunity to prove themselves against the ranked opponents on their schedule like CAL, Oregon, ND, and potentially UCLA..
this also gives the teams ahead of USC in the rankings time to slip-up and stumble (notice: many of the top teams are from the SAME conferences and will inevitably knock each other off)..
as bad as it seems, I see light at the end of the tunnel.. with a little time, the guys will get healthy, the new offensive coordinator will have a better grasp of the plays, and all will be okay in the city of angels..

All NCAA Div 1a teams are doped.
That INCLUDES, Huskies, Ducks, Cal, Natre Dame, Michigan, ASU, Ohio, LSU, UCLA and USC!

Don't shoot the messenger, USC is a STEROIDED, felony arrest, TV created team!
If you LOVE truth you have to laugh at TV sports! It is a huge fraud as is Pete Carroll.
Pete Carroll could NOT win a high school game unless it was FIXED by Nike and a TV executive.
ASU, BYU, Notre Dame and Cal are all better doped squads BUT have smaller TV markets.
The Rose Bowl is reserved for the OJ Simpson (double murder), Mark Sanchez (rapist), Rod Martin (wife beater), Eric Wright (rapist), Matt Leinert (baby out-of-wedlock, no Trojan), Rey Manauluga (assault & resisting arrest) SC Trojans!
Pete Carroll only knows about alum@#$%tail parties and Vodka Martinis. Not violent steroid football

I'm a die hard USC fan. I can admit the team was outcoached. Corp was horrible. Can't believe he didn't get benched. The running game again was solid but that's not surprising.
Looks like a one-horse race to the NC game (Florida) and a fight for who gets #2. I can admit I'm rooting for the Huskies now. They just became USC's only chance for the NC game.
