No. 11 Buckeyes make Rockets fizzle, 38-0

CLEVELAND (AP)—When people said No. 11 Ohio State had no offense, quarterback Terrelle Pryor took offense.

The sophomore threw for a career-high 262 yards and ran for 110 yards to help the Buckeyes rebound from a disheartening loss and the criticism that went with it and beat Toledo 38-0 on Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

“I’m just here to win,” said Pryor, who threw three TD passes and ran for another score. “Whether it’s 100 yards passing or 100 yards rushing … it’s not always realistic. Of course I want it, but I’ll still do whatever I can to get a win.”

It was a resounding response by the Buckeyes (2-1) a week after a crushing 18-15 loss to No. 3 Southern California. The Rockets are no Trojans, but Pryor and the Buckeyes got the confidence-boosting performance they needed.

Pryor set career bests in completions and attempts (17 for 28) and tossed TD passes of 76 yards and 18 yards to Dane Sanzenbacher on the Buckeyes’ first two possessions to set the tone against a Toledo defense that came in giving up 45 points and almost 500 yards a game.

“I thought he threw the ball much better than he had in previous weeks,” said Toledo (1-2) coach Tim Beckman, a former Ohio State assistant.

In the wake of the loss to USC, Ohio State fans were critical of coach Jim Tressel, complaining about his conservative approach and play-calling. But a decidedly pro-Buckeyes crowd of 71,727 roared its approval as their team steamrolled through the Rockets (1-2), who were hopeful of adding another big upset to their resume after tripping up Michigan 13-10 a year ago.

On third-and-7 from his own 24 on Ohio State’s first possession, Pryor flipped a pass over the middle to a wide-open Sanzenbacher. He split the secondary and raced the distance.

Pryor—who was hesitant to run and seldom threw longer than 10 yards in the first two games—rushed for two first downs and passed 12 yards to Duron Carter for another the second time Ohio State had the ball. That helped set up a quick look-in pass to Sanzenbacher, who was sandwiched by defensive backs but pulled in the ball to make it 14-0.

“(Terrelle is) a perfectionist. He’s never completely satisfied with his performance,” Tressel said. “I think he had more fun (than last week). When you succeed and score points, it’s a lot more fun playing offense.”

Ohio State’s defense held Toledo’s Aaron Opelt, leading the nation in total offense with 437 yards a game, to 181 yards.

“That was our focus, to get to him and make him throw it quickly,” defensive end Thaddeus Gibson said.

Opelt hit on 22 of 45 passes for 197 yards but was sacked twice, hurried 10 times and intercepted once.

“We were off today,” Beckman said.

Asked if he’d ever been shut out before, Opelt said, “If I did I’d remember, so I don’t think so.”

With Ohio State’s front wall bearing down on Opelt, he had to throw the ball away on four of the Rockets’ first six plays. It didn’t get much better after that as they managed just 210 yards.

Dan Herron ran for a 4-yard score and DeVier Posey also caught a TD pass from Pryor, who had two interceptions.

Tressel chided Ohio State’s fans earlier this week, saying he felt bad about how “miserable” they were after the USC defeat. A sign on a scarlet-and-gray bus parked near Browns Stadium listed the six straight top-10 teams that have beaten the Buckeyes since 2006. Next to the list was written, “Miserable OSU fans.”

The Buckeyes seemed committed to making the Rockets—particularly Opelt— miserable.

Early in the fourth quarter, Opelt hit Eric Page with a pass at the 6 but he was hit by Kurt Coleman and fumbled at the goal line, with linebacker Ross Homan recovering for a touchback.

It was that kind of a day for the Rockets.

“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Toledo safety Barry Church said. “It’s very disappointing. To get shut out really hurts.”

No, I worked in a field hospital and on the aircraft that carried wounded civilians and combatants. I now work for a field air ambulance service in Northern California. We receive the same medical training as a Delta. We do not however enter combat. The Deltas were in our class in medic school. That is all I meant and you took it way out of context. BTW, I am not the chick that, "Always has to have the last word."

    Tony,

I assume you are an alum, since you said "We," too many buckeye fans who dropped out of school at 16 and have an "O" flag outside the single wide say "We" all the time.

Er, Miami was not in the ACC at the time of the Fiesta Bowl...As for "Beat," well, if you call playing a guy ten times as in-eligible as Reggie Bush and paying off Ref Terry Porter to make a non-existent pass interference call 12 seconds after the OSU receiver bobbled the ball, well you are in the vast minority...On tape, Dan Fouts kept saying BAD CALL, BAD CALL.

Unlike monolithic Ohio, Florida has many good teams, so don't assume we root for all of them. I am not a Gator fan, but since you brought it up, yes after weeks of hearing how OSU was going to win, bucknuts booking all the rooms and taking all the tickets since Florida only got in late and resting up all their players...OSU got destroyed. Then the excuse was they had too long a lay-off (brought back again after LSU throttled them). Florida is playing easy schools...Just like OSU playing perennial powers Navy, Toledo, Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota and New Mexico State.

Why does OSU drop in the AP after beating Toledo? OSU is a joke in the rest of the country...Get outside of your state and realize the football center of the universe is not Ohio. Texas, Florida, or California maybe, but Ohio? Heck, OSU is the second best team in the state after Cincy.

Carroll lets it go just like others! If you remeber correctly when Troy Smith got in trouble he was suspended for the Bowl game plus 3 games the next year. If they are a star at USC look the other way. OSU you get benched or suspended. But it is sad that so MANY colleges look the other way when it comes to crimes and they get the courts to look the other way.

Yeah, Patrick, we're about as impressed as Florida beating a couple of high school teams before barely beating Tennessee, or the manner in which that powerhouse ACC hasn't won anything since, well, since before we beat Miami. Or USC losing to a team that didn't win a game last year (pulling another Stanford, like they do every year, and then having one of their cronies like Mark May taking to the air waves and whining about how everyone doesn't respect the Pac-10). And hey, Dana, speaking of criminality, all my best to Bowden and his backers down in Florida State. They only have about four times as many NCAA infractions in the last decade as the Big 10 has (as an entire conference), and is in the act of losing several of his victories in the record books.

    @Dana:

I realize that women are allowed to work in field hospitals. Got it. But you claimed that you were "a 18 Delta on the ground". Impossible. Working in a field hospital is one thing, but saying that you were an 18D during the Gulf War is a load of BS. Don't try to make yourself sound all hardcore. I've been to Iraq twice and seen what women do there. They do an amazing job in the aid station/hospital environment.

But none of them claim to be 18D's that are going outside the wire, doing what an 18D would do. I suggest you watch how you word things next time, as you sound like a damn fool and have a lot of my Army buddies (including me) laughing our butts off at your asinine statement. Don't come on here puffing your chest unless you can clarify things right the first time, instead of trying to make yourself sound like a bad azz.

Oh yeah, one more thing....Go Bucks! A loss to USC or no loss this season, at least we don't get our butts handed to us every year by an unranked nobody.

USC definetly favored Reggie Bush. Reggie however did not assault anyone, carry a illegal firearm or commit violent crimes. I do not believe Pete Carroll would permit that on his team. There is accountability at USC.

How much do Big Ten schools pay their MAC enablers? Obviously, some checks don't clear (NIU/Purdue, or is this to throw off suspicion?) but in most every case, the MAC school will seemingly lose the will to win in the 4th Qtr. Toledo's "sacrifice" takes the cake, though:

    - Give up a home game so you have to go down the road where your opponent's fans are 85% of the crowd. Gee, your student - athletes now only have 5 games they don't have to get on a bus or plane to go and get booed, along with planning their schedules w/profs, etc. Nice support.

    - Ooh, you did schedule a BCS opponent the week before at home...and you won! Look at realistically. In most years, Colorado would not have been so spent and would have throttled Toledo. Still, Colorado had the athletes to pound you for four quarters. Do you really think after a game like that your team is ready to go down the road and take on another BCS team in a hostile stadium (no matter how many Toledo banners you put up). Do you care about your student-athletes?

    - What do you do with that OSU payday? Buy a new boat for the lake using your increased salary? Again, is it worth it to your student-athletes?

    - Coach "Knees" Beckman, glad you were there for your mentor "The Vest." Rich Rod cried when someone stated that he didn't care about his players...what are you going to do after serving them up on a silver platter? You said "OSU doesn't normally do such things" in describing the arrangement. Gee, you expect people to believe that you got one over on OSU with the sweetheart deal to your buddy Jim? Yeah, Tressel promised you the world and you played the good boy.. Just remember, an OSU QB who pronounced his name the same way played that game too...look where it got him.

Navy got beat by Pitt, USC ("Moral Victory") by Washington...The Buckeyes are hanging their hats on a home win against a "delivered" Toledo? Wow, I'm impressed!

Dana - You point fingers at OSU and their violations. Do you not think that other universities are as guilty? College football is a big business to these universities these days with a BSC bid bringing in millions of dollars. If you think that USC did not give benefits to Reggie Bush and family then you're nuts. I will not say OSU has been innocent (hell I think they hung Clarret out to dry) but I believe every other major university is just as guilty.

Bucksrul34--- Toledo averages giving up 45 actually but they average scoring 34.5 and we kept them scoring at all. Yes, we are not the greatest and we will not be in the National Hunt. I think you will see the team continue to grow. Next week against Illinois, I think will be a thorn in our side!! But I will always cheer for the Buckeyes no matter how bad they are and jump on another bandwagon!! That is a true fan!!

I am not trying to say OSU is the best team in the NCAA. All I am saying is that, USC sucks!! OSU lost to them but pushed them all over the field. They are both good teams but not great. I cannot believe what Dana says anymore but who cares she is just like USC full of bull and more thugs!! Yeah, I am a veteran, too. I was in Operation Desert Storm as a Marine and I was stationed in Kuwait when I was in the Air Force as a Satcom/Wideband Tech. I was over there when OSU won the National Championship. Who cares? I support OSU and always will. They have proven to be a class act and they report violations as they know they happen. Schillicter was a long time ago BTW!! Do we need to mention O.J. USC sweeps everything under the rug!! I believe the F.B.I has been to USC 3 times since Carroll. DANG!! 1 to 3 USC wins again!!

Again, with all the constant Buckeye bashing you are dishing out, can you set a minute aside to please explain to me how you were an 18D when the U.S. Army doesn't allow women to go to SFAS or even to be attached to SF unit's when they deployed and/or out on patrol during war? Last time I checked, females are not allowed to fight on the front-lines. I'll be waiting for your explanantion, oh wise one...

Well 20 is not too bad compared to other schools. She mentioned rules violations too. Check USC since Carroll has been there since he has been there 28 violations or arrests and 2 this year. Griffen being one of them. The one she was talking about robbery he was a former player and he was the one that lied. He is in jail because of it. THUG U looks to the West or maybe South, Florida has had 24 arrests in the last 4 years and Georgia 30. Dang 20 in 9 years NOT BAD. Last time OSU won on National TV Nov. 22, 2008 42-7. Last bowl game won Notre Dame 34-20. OSU is actually 18-22 in bowl games get your facts straight!!! OSU since Tressel against ranked opponents 22-10 against unranked 40-4. USC cheats and everyone knows it like Bush for just one.

I have to agree here with Dana in one way. Becauce you name is Dana doesnt make you a girl. Im a Dana who is a guy. Other than that ....I disagree with everything else. Although your stats Im sure are correct as far as crimes or acts by the Buckeye players have committed, they are one sided. The Buckeys lead the Big 10 in Academic All-Americans and have almost every year Tressel has been there. You being a former Green Beret, Im sure understand guys do things like that, they play a violent game and get in trouble. Im serving my 22nd year in our fine Army and totally understand the lifestyle. You cant compare the two but, you just dont leave things on the field. Espically young men who are the kings of campus. So 20 blotter reports in a 4-5 year span. Not to bad. You have to wiegh the bad with the good. The Buckeyes may have some off the field problems, but there are pleanty of good things that go on there too. Again, you living the Army life before have to know you never show up with a problem with out a solution and information to show both sides.

Only MALES are allowed to be 18D's, along with Infantry and Rangers as well. If you are a male, then I apologize. But don't come on here and flex your chest like you were a bad azz 18 Series in the Gulf War if you are in fact of the female gender. I am in the Army right now.
