Best’s 5 TDs carry Cal past Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)—The California Golden Bears were on their heels again in a game away from home, tied with Minnesota going into the fourth quarter with a hostile crowd breathing down their necks.

As thoughts of “Here we go again” entered the minds of Cal backers everywhere, Jahvid Best couldn’t wait to show them that this year will be different.

“I’m kind of glad they came back and tested us a little bit,” Best said.

Best rushed for 131 yards and a modern school-record five touchdowns to help the No. 8 Golden Bears vanquish a road curse in a 35-21 victory over scrappy Minnesota.

Best scored on runs of 33, 27 and 2 yards in a breathtaking first half, but his most important runs of the game came on a pair of 2-yard sprints to the corner of the end zone to hold off Minnesota and snap a four-game road losing streak.

“I see him as a complete player,” offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig said. “I don’t see him as a role player. That guy, we’re asking him to do a lot and he accepts his workload and responsibility.”

Kevin Riley overcame a shaky start to finish with 252 yards for Cal (3-0), which had lost eight of its last nine on the road.

“We tried to make a statement that we’re going to be road warriors this year,” defensive end Tyson Alualu said. “It’s a different team than last year.”

Eric Decker caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns, and threw another TD for the Golden Gophers (2-1), who gave Cal everything it could handle in their shiny new stadium.

But Adam Weber threw a costly interception late in the game and Best had too much speed for the Gophers, who were in search of their first victory over a top-10 team at home since beating No. 1 Michigan in 1977.

“What I’m really disappointed in is we didn’t find a way to win the game,” Gophers coach Tim Brewster said. “When you play a great opponent like you’re playing today, the team that’s going to win is the team that makes the plays at the end of the football game.”

Cal rolled into this game after two easy victories over Maryland and Eastern Washington, racking up more than 50 points and 500 yards in each of them, and this one had the appearance of another blowout early.

On Cal’s opening drive, Best burst through the middle, cut right and then leaped from the 3-yard line over cornerback Ryan Collado and into the end zone to cap an electric 33-yard run.

On its next possession, Best ripped off a 25-yard run on the first play. That set up a play-action fake, and Riley hit Verran Tucker for a 59-yard completion to the Minnesota 2. Best was in the end zone a few seconds later, and Cal led 14-0 before the game was 8 minutes old.

With the offense reeling, Decker absorbed a brutal hit from Cal safety Sean Cattouse, but somehow held on to the ball for a 26-yard score to make it 14-7.

The hit opened a gash on Decker’s chin, and blood poured onto his gold jersey as he rolled on the turf in pain. The gritty receiver stayed in the game and would make things interesting before halftime, hauling in a 12-yard TD to pull Minnesota to 21-14 at the break.

It was also his 199th career reception, which broke Ron Johnson’s school record.

“I can’t remember the hit,” said Decker, who needed four or five stitches to close the cut. “They’re a tough, physical team.”

He wasn’t done there.

Decker took a pitch to the left side and the Minnesota Twins draft pick fired a strike to MarQueis Gray to tie the game at 21 at the end of the third quarter.

After rushing for 114 yards and three scores in the first half, Best had just three carries for 4 yards in the second half when Cal took the ball midway through the fourth quarter with the game tied.

Riley was sluggish much of the game, but he converted a crucial third-and-16 with a 35-yard completion to Jeremy Ross for Cal’s first first down of the second half, then hit him again for 31 yards to the Minnesota 1.

Best outran the Gopher defense to the corner for a 2-yard score, putting Cal ahead for good.

“He’s probably the fastest running back I’ve ever played against,” Minnesota linebacker Lee Campbell said. “You had to keep him coralled. You saw what happened. When he got outside, he’s gone.”

Defensive end Eddie Young’s pressure forced Weber to rush a throw on the ensuing possession and Mike Mohamed intercepted it.

Best capped his historic day with another 2-yard sprint to the corner, giving Cal some momentum heading into a tough stretch that includes games at Oregon, against USC and at UCLA in the next four weeks.

“It is great to play a tough game and to be able to play well in the fourth quarter and make plays when you need to make plays in all phases of the team,” Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. “I think it will give us a boost and give us a little bit of confidence.”

Dan must be eating the yellow snow. The Hamsters will NOT win the Big Ten. It will be yet another bottom of the table type year for the Golden Hamsters. No bowl, losing season and yet another coaching change. Whats the line on the SDSU game? SDSU by 2 touchdowns?

You're a joke. First person I've heard ridicule the new stadium. it's a great stadium, great for the fanbase and the program.

Go run yourself into a wall.

The bears showed they were a solid team, winning on the road. They have an exciting program this year. Hey Cassie-- I have nothing against Alabama so i don't go hatin on their blog. I wish you would go away. Why so defensive. I have a degree from U.C. Berkeley and last time I looked , I bet 99.9 % of the people would rather say they have a degree from U.C. Berkeley than UAB. Yikes. Go Bears.

#84 wow. You need to speak with Dr Phil. I find Casie C to be an intelligent and inciteful poster. I do not let the fact that Casie is an Alabama fan bother me. It happens in th best of families. Good game and both played well. I wish I could say the same for my USC Trojans, but the Huskies outplayed them. I support all Pac teams except when they are playing USC. Cal has a great program, at least the equal of ANY SEC team. Hope they only have one loss (to the Trojans) but otherwise win out.

Michael, I have a ton of respect for Camp Randall and the WI program. It's been around for a long time bro and there is no sharing that field - it belongs to UW. We had Memorial Stadium (which was known as the "Brick House") from the 20's all the way up to the move to the metrodome in 82. The games were filled at the brick, and the only reason we moved, with many people disliking the idea, was because of business leaders, and idiot Paul Giel. TCF is the new Memorial Stadium - thus the color, You have a point regarding few fans coming during the metrodome days, but playing there (whether player or attendee) ...was not home.

The dome was like calling Motel 6 "home." No, you can't move in any furniture and yes, the sheets should be clean, there's a small chance you could see a celebrity,... but you have to be checked-out by noon.

How can you not see the positives of a fellow Big Ten team having the pageantry of an on campus stadium? Any argument otherwise (attendance in 3 years blah blah, other midwest schools' fans blah blah shake fist) is seriously below you ....or you are what many think you are... unhappy that a good thing happened at Minny.

The argument about playing USC & Texas is just hilarious given that during the Mason days, we got flak for playing cup-cakes. Having your cake and eating it is not an option... I prefer playing the big programs, I think it certainly helps for the B10 play.

The Dome held 65,000 and certainly wasn't sold out. 30,000 was the majority. Your fan base is pathetic or nonexistent and a concrete structure won't change that. The ugly copper building on campus is a sign of your irrelevance and how much your alumni care about football.

The difference between MN and WI football is this: WI can suck and the stadium will still sellout with 80% Badger fans minimum. We love our team here and nothing will change that. MN can suck and the stadium will be empty or another home game for Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, even NDSU. Thanks for a new Big House, Shoe, Kinnick Stadium, Camp Randall and Fargodome for the real football fans in the midwest.

As a Gopher fan, I was happy to see a real good game today. The Golden Bears are a tough team and their running back Best...well, he's a stud and he showed that today. If I was the offensive coordinator for Cal I would do the same and hand him the ball as often as possible. As for my Gophers, this was very encouraging for the Tim Brewster era, which has been rocky at best. For three quarters, they went toe to toe with the eighth best team in the country. With all due respect to Weber and Decker, I long for the days when the Gophers led the nation in rushing (ala Maroney and Barber under the Mason regime). Today's effort on the ground isn't going to cut it.

NDSU fans did not outnumber Gopher fans, and SDSU? You're just a hater. Gophers have played well this season and the program is relavent. Take your crass commentary elsewhere.

Don't the Dakota's have more fans that come to the games in MN than Gopher fans? NDSU fans certainly outnumbered Gopher fans in their last meeting. We'll see nothing's changed when the Gophers take on SDSU in November. Aren't they in the same conference as Wofford? It might be cold in November, though, wouldn't it be nice to play in a dome that is a free 5 minute bus ride away?

Good luck getting kicked in the teeth by USC and Texas 4 times. I'm sure star athletes will sign up to get humiliated and fans will "donate" money to go see the Gophers lose at home. Your fan base is a joke and the support for the team will be gone within 3 years.

I'll donate the first $100 for the Gopher football team to be eliminated and a new alumni center to be built over TCF bank stadium.

This is for all the SEC people out there. Stop the BS regarding the "program" at Cal. Academic institutions for higher learning are great throughout the US. The superior football argrument is old hat SEC fans. Check your history.

If it wasn't for the PAC-10 and USC coming to "Bama" to kick your butts in your house with Sam"the Bam" Cunningham back in the day your ENTIRE conference would still be in the stone ages. Let it go and realize Pete Carroll has a good thing going at USC.

However, the rest of the PAC-10 is not afraid of USC anymore and UW proved it today. Until I see more out of conference teams beating USC, just be quiet. Cal fans[like me] and the rest of the PAC-10 will keep on beating USC when it counts, peace!!

The only language that you undrestand is childish derivel...you get what you give my friend. You end every statement you make with "Cal's not a real team" or something as such. You insult trying to illicit a response and when you get it you ATTEMPT to point out other's "childish" behavior. We've seen your kind around here many times, not to worry. You get what you give...I'm cool with it so don't think you can insult me. I'm actually thinking that you're only 12 now..maybe 11. Go home to momma.
