Dropped passes worry unbeaten Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP)—Itching to compare unbeaten Kansas with the 2007 team that rolled up 12 victories and vanquished Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl? Don’t do it, says coach Mark Mangino.

The Kansas coach is seeing too many little mistakes and too much of a leadership vacuum with this team.

“I don’t now how many games this team will win,” Mangino said. “This team has a completely different personality than the 2007 team. … That 2007 team had a little bit more maturity. If you eliminate (Todd) Reesing, (Kerry) Meier and (Darrell) Stuckey and (Jake) Sharp from the equation, it’s really not a mature football team. Those four guys kind of lead it and pull it along, where we had a bunch more guys, leadership guys, especially on defense (in 2007).”

A 44-16 victory Saturday by the No. 22 Jayhawks over undermanned Duke may offer hints, and not just the two-play, 87-yard drive the Blue Devils pulled off on their first possession.

Kansas’ mistakes were evident, especially an uncommon number of dropped passes. Todd Reesing’s 338 yards would have approached 400 yards if Dezmon Briscoe and Johnathon Wilson had managed to hang onto a couple of perfectly thrown spirals.

As the Jayhawks were stuck in a 7-7 deadlock against an ACC team they were favored over by 22 points, Kansas failed on a third-down play and Reesing kicked at the turf in frustration.

Although the Jayhawks eventually got rolling, the Blue Devils hounded Kansas’ offense much of the game.

Reesing agreed it’s too early to start making comparisons with 2007.

“We did have a strong senior class that year, and we did have some vocal guys on defense, which is something we may not have as much this year,” he said. “I think we need some more guys who step up vocally and let some people know they’re out there. It’s early. We’ve got time to improve.”

This week the Jayhawks wrap up their nonconference schedule by hosting Southern Mississippi. But perhaps the greatest concern is whether this team is ready to venture into the tough neighborhoods of the Big 12.

w p. Are u that stupid? 5-7 this year? and 2-10 next year? This is why i dont like sports. I think its stupid when people say things like that that i can gurantee you arent going to happen. We are already 3-0. What makes u think we will only go 2-7 in the next 9 games. Yes i know we play tougher teams coming up but seeing what i have from some of these teams i think that kansas stands a pretty good chance at beating some of them. Plus the 2-10 thing for next year is an even bigger joke. Briscoe is only a junior so not all our standouts are seniors. We also have a great QB, WR, and RB who are all freshmen. Yes thats right. Kale Pick, Bradley McDougald, and Toben Opurum. These guys are the future and plus with Wilson back our offense will be fine. Kansas will win 3 more games at least this year if not 4 or 5 more. Next year we will at least win 3 games if not 4 or 5. Kansas is not as bad as u think man.

Every team in the Big 12 has standout athletes that have accomplished lofty goals, except stupid missouri. Some missou athletes might have good stats but have they won anything? Retards. Ku fans know we need to beat the south. Mizzou fans think beating ku is like a national title. I'm sure they'll build a 24K gold statue of Chase (I have to call my mom from the sidelines after every interception) Daniels because he beat KU in 2007.

Hauged Up Nigguhh is a sick, cowardly, homophobic racist. If he is so proud of himself and Missouri, he should post his name. Mizzou, situated in a state with a racist past would be ashamed of his support.

I am glad to see KU starting to have a football program again. It makes the Big 12 North more fun. If Missouri would get rid of the Antlers group, I might be able to like the team and school. Having a group which makes Oakland Raders fans look like choirboys kind of hurts your school's rep.

I actually liked the first sentence. Duke has a long, long way to go to catch a team like KU. For the mu post, what a compliment. You care enough to come over to our board and post. That means that we're in your stupid head living rent free. Lots of space in that empty dome of yours. You can be sure that KU fans could care less about mu football. Whatever we're feeding Mangino, it works. He coaches our boys up to win, like our BCS game. For mu fans: as good as Reesing is, Cale Pick looks as if he'll take over the reins and do well. He is a faster version of the athlete that is your worst dream.

That first sentence is a joke. Way to come up with a "cute" and "original" opening line you douche.

This would have been a better match up as college basketball game. Kansas is getting a lot better at football, as for Duke no comment.

what you actually meant is that black guys are better than white guys at football, percentage wise (post 1). Duke is unathletic and basketball teams with more black guys are more talented (post 2). Yes, that's why all those all black colleges are dominating NCAA sports, and winning all the championships and to win you need a higher perecentage of blacks or "persons of color" on your roster to be successful.

why did navy and all those white boys almost beat ohio state? BYU over Okl?

Thank you for your subdued racist comments. Actually you may not be a racist, but heavy bias or sterotyping is generally seen as the same thing. Flush out your head gear, no one gives a crap about the color of the dude making plays.

What I meant by that last comment is that Duke's basketball team is just a bunch of white guys and persons of color tend to be athletically superior.

I wonder if Duke has as many African American players percentage-wise on their football team as they do on their basketball team. If its anywhere near the same, I'm guessing it should be another blowout.
