No. 24 North Carolina beats East Carolina 31-17

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—One freshman ran with the steady confidence of being the go-to guy. The other managed a juggling 59-yard touchdown for his first collegiate catch.

It turns out No. 24 North Carolina just might have some receivers after all.

Erik Highsmith had six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown while Jheranie Boyd hauled in that long first-half TD Saturday to help North Carolina beat East Carolina 31-17, giving the Tar Heels their first 3-0 start in a dozen years.

Ryan Houston also ran for a pair of touchdowns, part of a balanced day from a young offense that had been plagued by dropped passes and bad blocking in its earlier games. North Carolina finished with 433 total yards, including a season-high 285 through the air, and put the game away with a clock-draining drive that ended with Houston’s 5-yard run with 1:58 left.

Not bad for an offense trying to replace three receivers who were NFL draft picks in the spring, including first-rounder Hakeem Nicks.

“We’re a work in progress,” coach Butch Davis said. “Let’s don’t make any mistakes about it. We’re going to have challenges. We’re going to have adversity. … But our kids believe in each other and the coaches believe in the kids and they just keep trying to find a way to fight and give us the best chance to play as well as we can each Saturday.”

North Carolina hasn’t been 3-0 since Mack Brown’s last team started 8-0 in 1997. It opened with a romp against The Citadel, then rallied in the fourth quarter to win at Connecticut 12-10 last weekend. This time, they faced a veteran instate rival that had knocked off Virginia Tech and West Virginia last season on the way to the Conference USA championship.

The Tar Heels got another tough defensive performance, holding East Carolina (1-2) to 247 total yards. They also recovered a fumble, blocked a second-half field goal and got two sacks from Robert Quinn.

Only this time, the offense kept up the entire way.

“We see it at practice all the time,” defensive tackle Marvin Austin said. “We know they can move the ball. They just had to get in a rhythm and go out and execute. I’m glad they’ve got that thing rolling now. It’s going to help us on defense. We can pin our ears back and go get ‘em now.”

Highsmith was particularly impressive, starting with a 16-yard catch for North Carolina’s first score. But he made his biggest plays in the fourth quarter after the Pirates had closed to within 24-17. First he took a quick out from T.J. Yates and sprinted 43 yards for first down. Two plays later, Yates rolled to his left and found Highsmith again for a 10-yard gain and another first down that ultimately led to Houston’s second score.

“I’m probably nervous every game the first play,” Highsmith said. “But after that, the game just slowed down for me. It felt like high school again.”

In perhaps a good omen, Highsmith became the first true freshman to crack the 100-yard mark here since Nicks did it three times in 2006. Even better, he wears Nicks’ No. 88 jersey.

“Their receivers showed more today than they had showed on film,” Pirates coach Skip Holtz said. “They were dialed-in and focused. They did a nice job with it … because when you watched them on film, they had dropped a bunch and their passing game was a little bit out of whack, but they were impressive today.”

The Pirates handed Davis his first loss as North Carolina’s coach in 2007 with a last-play field goal in Greenville. Patrick Pinkney threw for 406 yards and three touchdowns in that game, but threw for just 157 yards and a touchdown in this one. He got no help from the rushing attack, either; East Carolina had 55 yards on 30 carries against the Tar Heels’ defensive front.

Pinkney found Jamar Bryant for a 7-yard touchdown and the game’s first score and Dwyane Harris later ran for a touchdown to make it 14-all in the second quarter. But Houston put the Tar Heels ahead for good with a 1-yard run late in the half for a 21-14 lead at the break.

East Carolina still hasn’t scored a second-half touchdown, outscored 41-5 after the break this year.

“When you’ve got NFL-bound players coming at you every play,” Pinkney said, “it’s hard.”

the game will be a great test of UNC's defense. Keep Tech to 175 rushing or lower. There is enough Heels O to win the game. The D will certainly need a few key stops to get a short field for the O. Let's hope the conditioning holds up and the Heart will win the game. Hookum Heels.

You think the refs were paid off by the Heels for that last call. Holtz is having it looked at. Why not?

Our season never ends... whether it's in football, basketball, baseball, etc. we deliver. Being overly critical only exposes your intimidation.

First & goal, half the distance vs. 2nd & 25 from the 35? Even a UNC fan can figure which situation helps a team. This was not the primary determining factor ....the suffocating UNC defense was. However, getting the calls straight only adds to the legitimacy of the victory, regardless of the teams playing. Butch is building a decent program and the easy spelling of U-N-C makes them a coaches pick in the top 25.

Why are there are so many comparisons of the sports. If you want to talk championship teams, just mention the Tarheel women's Soccor team. Any school to win a Sears Cup speaks very well of their Athletic competition. The Heels football team is a season away from being a BCS contender. As much as I want them to finish in a BCS bowl, it will not happen this season. And so what of it? Give a coach three to five years to build a winning program. As it stands today the Tarheels are 3 - 0. And really makes no difference how they won, they won. The crack about the UCONN is not without remark. Usually I like to see the teams play the game through but pentalies are part of the game. Somedays they work your way and other days they don't. I feel for the kid that was called for holding.
I do think the defense came a little bit down to earth today against ECU. But in return a couple of WRs came out today. This will match well against Tech. The defense will have a good practice this week and get ready for Tech's run game. Force Tech to the air and let UNC's offense do their job. Question will become who will get tired first. Look for UNC to score as fast as possible and their defense the crowd out of the game. That's the hope. How mean will the "Wrambling Wreck" be after losing on National TV? We shall see on Saturday. As stated in another comment. I am very curious to see how the team responds after a loss. I think they will do well. They are playing within their means and if they just keeping do that, then I will look for a great road win on Saturday. Hook'um Heels.

To all you Heel Haters, call basketball what you may, but like all the other conferences in basketball they want to be the ACC, every dog has his day and the day of the heels is coming in football. Also the Canes which are in the ACC will blast any SEC school right now and believe me when we face LSU here in the ATL it won't be a blowout, Butch wanted this game for a reason and the world will see. So to you haters out there just sit back and watch a dynasty institution wise. CAROLINA IS PRESTIGE AND CLASS something of which none of your other schools have no matter what conference you come from!!

GO HEELS!!!!!! TARHEEL BORN, TARHEEL BRED

I love intelligent comments, which is why I love tremone21's comment.

Of course, I speak in jest.

So, I assume people like Lebron James and Dwight Howard are "sissies" huh?

You make it sounds like football is no holds-barred action: what about stuff like "unnecessary roughness" or "roughing the kicker." With your perceptions of what makes a sport "tough," football would be a "sissy" sport compared to rugby.
I love football, and I also love basketball. Both are demanding sports with different skill sets. You can't say one makes you "tougher" because you know... they are different sports.

Also, you make it sound like the criteria of being in a conference is based on a school's football program, which, with your twisted, convoluted, straight up idiotic logic would mean Duke would not be in the ACC. That's not how it works.

i'd like to know where the ref wasn't wearing his blue and white jersey after that penalty he called. i mean come on, could he have been any more obvious about making a bad call. instead of calling PF against UNC for illegal block in the back, he calls one on CJ Wilson for roughing the passer. i think next year that coaches should be able to challenge penalties, since they can challenge everything else. if not the coaches, then the booth should review it just like they would any other call that an official makes on the field. UNC might've still won that game, but it wouldn't have been the same score. sad is all i can say.

tremone...you sound like someone who has never touched a ball related to any "athletic" activity. Basketball is a sissy sport? You ever seen anyones teeth fly out from catching an elbow under the basket, I have. However I do agree that the ACC is in no way a football conference and pales in comparison to the SEC (so does pretty much every other conference), Carolina is a good team and getting better and you might eat those words by 2010, Butch Davis knows what he's doing!

I can't wait until LSU plays North Carolina next year in 2010. I can't wait until they get destroyed. To you UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest fans, basketball season starts in November not September so shut the @#$%k up. Basketball is a sissy sport. Real men play football. Sorry UNC and Duke fans they don't call cheap fouls on the football field nor do they have a free throw line on the football field. As far for Duke fans, your football team doesn't deserve to be Division 1 or even in the ACC. However, thank your basketball program for winning every year because Duke wouldn't even be in the ACC if it wasn't for their basketball program. Oh, Duke beat Army, lol. UNC barely beat UCONN and the refs bailed them out with a questionable holding car in the endzone, lol. Really UNC fans? Your team is so overrated!
