No. 10 Boise St wins 51-34 shootout over Fresno St

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)—Jeremy Avery and Titus Young made sure Boise State had the answers to every big play Fresno State delivered.

Avery had three plays of longer than 60 yards and Young scored two touchdowns, providing just some of the many highlight-reel plays in the 10th-ranked Broncos’ 51-34 victory Friday night.

Avery scored on a 67-yard swing pass to break the game open in the fourth quarter and Young provided perhaps the biggest play of all, diving on Avery’s fumble in the end zone to complete a 75-yard score as Boise State (3-0, 1-0) won for the 57th time in its past 59 Western Athletic Conference games.

Few were as entertaining as this one. The Broncos broke out to a 24-3 lead then had to scramble to win and keep alive its hopes for making it back to a Bowl Championship Series game.

“We knew we had to answer back as an offense,” said Avery, who gained 269 yards from scrimmage. “We didn’t let it get to us. We knew we had a high-powered offense and could do the same thing. We gathered our troops and we all clicked. When we all clicked there was no stopping us.”

Fresno State (1-2, 0-1) got three touchdown runs of at least 60 yards from Ryan Mathews but again fell short against a ranked team, losing for the 10th straight time against teams in the Top 25. The skid started with a 50-42 loss to No. 1 Southern California in 2005. This game provided the appropriate bookend.

With the Friday night stage to themselves, Boise State and Fresno State provided enough big plays to last the weekend. The Broncos had two 77-yard kickoff returns, an interception return for a touchdown, a 60-yard touchdown run by D.J. Harper, and the big plays from Avery.

“A lot of playmakers making plays out there,” said Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, who threw three touchdown passes. “Good running backs on both sides making plays out of nothing and breaking tackles here and there.”

The first of Avery’s plays came on a long run that appeared to be bound for the end zone. But A.J. Jefferson poked the ball loose just before Avery scored. With the ball rolling toward the back of the end zone for an apparent touchback and Boise State turnover, Young made a diving recovery before sliding out of bounds for the score that made it 34-24.

Avery then answered a Fresno State score with the long screen pass that restored a 14-point lead early in the fourth quarter and he added a 69-yard run that set up a field goal. Avery finished with 186 yards on 11 carries, with 83 more yards receiving.

Fresno State had plenty of big plays of its own, starting with the touchdown runs of 69, 60 and 68 yards by Mathews. Chastin West made a leaping 41-yard catch that was nearly an interception as Brandyn Thompson tried to wrestle the ball away and Devon Wylie made an acrobatic 21-yard touchdown catch from Ryan Colburn on the next play.

Boise State appeared to pull away with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Austin Pettis in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, making it 41-27. But Mathews answered with his 68-yard run, part of a 234-yard night.

Then one play after Marvin Haynes dropped a potential interception for Fresno State, Avery took Moore’s screen pass all the way for the third touchdown in the first 2 minutes of the fourth quarter, making it 48-34.

“Every time we closed the gap, Boise, to their credit, would make a big play,” Fresno State coach Pat Hill said. “When it looked like we would have a chance to get the ball back, bang, they’d make a play.”

The rout appeared to be on early for Boise State. Winston Venable returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the game. The Broncos added a field goal by Kyle Brotzman and the long run by Harper to make it 17-0 before Fresno State even managed a first down. Harper finished with 107 yards rushing before leaving with an undisclosed injury.

That extended Boise State’s run of consecutive points against Fresno State to 68, dating to late in the second quarter of last year’s 61-10 Broncos’ victory. The lead grew to 24-3 before Mathews single-handedly brought the Bulldogs back with two long touchdowns that cut Boise State’s halftime lead to 24-17.

“When you can’t control the run game, it’s not a good feeling,” Broncos coach Chris Petersen said. “We had that going on for both sides. We had guys in position, we just didn’t tackle well. That’s the bottom line. We’re really fortunate we could miss tackles like that, give up that many yards and points and still come up with the `W.”’

boise beats a fresno state team that is supposed to be in a weakened and rebuilding stage, and it was a hard win. luckily boise is the media's darling and that helmet to helmet on 4th down against fresno was not called. if a fresno team in a down year can take you to the limit, then anyone can.

hawaii is always difficult to play on the island. boise goes there this year. as much as I despise hawaii, I hope the warriors bring boise's high hopes crashing down to reality.

Boise State defeated Fresno State, which is rated 46th by Sagarin. Legitimate teams do not swagger when they defeat mediocre, 46th ranked teams. Boise State's fans hyperventilate with joy. Boise State's coach and athletic director act like five year old girls when they schedule opponents.

Omg, bosie should be in the big shows year after year with the schudle they play, because of out of confrence teams they play. yes that how fresno st should play, play weak out of confrence teams and be healty year after year to play tough all the time!!! againts bosie and hawiie. then @#$% and complined why were not in the bsc games, for get anyear,anytime,anyplace.... the wac should be called the sister confrence. and it realley doesn't matter if fresno beat the tough teams like oklahoma, tennisee, aburn, usc, lsu, oregon, wisconsins, and others, why becasue fresno st would never be healty to play bosi and hawii, so we should just play a sister schedule thats called football!! so it realley doen't matter.....

Another great win by the Broncos! I can just imagine it now......a perfect, undefeated season......cracking the top 5.....only undefeated team in the country......not being allowed by the decision-makers to play for a national title......what a wonderful league this is!!

Nobody does a better job with what they have than Boise State. A team can't go undefeated in the WAC and deserve to be in the National Championship, however. They are capable of playing with or beating any team on a given day. As much as I love the Broncos, I know that they would have their losses from time to time against higher ranked teams if they had to play them more often. If they ever get the chance to be in the Pac-10 or Mountain West, they would fit right in and attract even more talent than they have already. A playoff would not benefit Boise like a conference promotion would.
After a tough road game in Fresno, I doubt Bowling Green will be much trouble.

PatrickA: also the pac-10 is not strong top to bottom. 1/2 of the teams in the pac-10 had losing records last year and it will be the same this year. another thing is usc is not as strong as usual and i think they will lose a game again. cal was not impressive today, best is a 1 man show and that never takes you far. oregon does not lok to be as good as normal, and oregon st. may lose at utah today. byu and houston are by far the best non bcs teams and could get a shot, you never know. the sec is way better than folks thought this year. arkansas and auburn look to be much improved, florida is #1 and Alabama is better than last year, as well as ole miss and lsu being better than last year.

PatickA: you haben't seen Bama i guess. I have seen all 3 games, 2 in person and every play on tv today. it is still early, i know, but they are better than even i thought, no one will man handle them, and i think more and more that they may not lose, period. their offense is finally caught up with the defense, and the defense is as good as there is in the nation.

Casie S: Good to see you again. However, the reason SEC fans say their conference is the best is because it's strong top-to-bottom. That's just as true as the PAC 10 and any other conference. I think we both agree a playoff is what we need.

UF Fans: start Googling BCS scenarios. You will NOT get in if BYU and USC are undefeated (even a Cal), UT and a few other colleges. Your non-conference schedule and weak conference schedule are killing you this year. It does NOT matter if you are ranked #1 in all of the other polls. You won't be anyway if those schools remain undefeated because you will get leap frogged. You better pray BYU doesn't go undefeated.

BSU Haters: believe me. BSU would be good in any conference. This idea that all these confrences are superior are based on a couple elite programs. BSU could EASILY man handle Alabama and other such schools. I.E Utah and many other teams have proven that the gap between Big/Small programs is very narrow.

BCS Leadership: I pray BYU goes undefeated and you lock them out of the NC game. Then some really smart lawyers are going to beat you in a court of law and have you disbanded and have a mandatory playoff.

Why is Boise's defense being judged so harshly because of the mixed results of one game that by the way they lead from start to finish thanks to the defense scoring early? I watched the same defense deny Oregon a first down in the entire first half but that didn't mean they would keep that up either?
I lived in Fresno for over 20 years and I saw Boise come to town and beat the #7 Bulldogs and tank their season that featured wins over Colorado and Oregon State. Fresno was given a chance to return the favor last night but they are not close to the Bulldogs of back then. Anyone who thinks that Fresno "should have" won last night should get that they would have needed over 51 points. Fresno's offense made the game interesting for awhile but Boise would have gone about their business with or without Matthews in the way. Without him it would have been 51-13

This was a really exciting game, but it's pretty clear when we witness such an offensive shootout that defense is catastrophically missing on both teams. Fun, but it doesn't bode well for a team seriously thinking about the BCS. In the NFL, the Colts learned many years ago that you can't win the big games with offense alone!

Listening to the games commentators last night for the Boise St. game really upset me. They started in on Boise's defense not living up to expectations. Well, Fresno St. had more total yards against them and Wisconsin last week. And Wisconsin is a " Big name school ".....They shouldn't rag like that, when not stating all the facts.....Fresno St. is a DARN good program, and has always played bigger school's tough. That's due to their coach...Boise St. deserved better than that from the commentators. This school has only won more games than 95% of all the Big Six Conference BCS schools in the last 4 years....

Dave: in an sec or big 12 they would be an average team, so yes, they coult recruit them, but they would not get the cream of the crop. i guarantee boise, this year would go about 7-5 in the sec, maybe 8-4 in the sec if they got a break on the scheduling, the same in the big 12. that does not mean you bring in the best recruits

The niggling problem with Hill's "anyone, anywhere, anytime" strategy/bluster is that it doesn't work. Fresno State has lost ten straight games against top 25 opponents with another such loss upcoming (Cincinatti). Hill is an overrated, underperforming, tireless, self-promoter who subjects his team to the most grueling travel schedule of any college team located in the continental United States. Hill was quoted last week that his team was so tired after the Wisconsin game and trip that they "didn't get their legs" until Wednesday before a Friday game with rival Boise State. Fresno State's constant quest for national television exposure is a product of Hill, boosters, and the university administration. Apparently they are so blinded by the ESPN coverage that the fact that they lose every game has not occurred to them. In Hill's 13 years at FS he has yet to win an outright conference championship. But hey, Hill and his "tough guy"image is an ESPN darling. What else matters?

To all those "experts" out there who avow that Boise State would be a so-so team if they were in the SEC/Big12/Big10/Pac10/et al: It is also true that if BSU were in one of those BCS conferences they'd also be able to recruit BCS type players, thus they'd be just as good as the other top BCS schools regardless. Their ability to showcase a consistent top 15 program every year with players who weren't considered good enough for a BCS school shows the quality of the program.

If Boise was in the SEC, they'd be able to recruit SEC type players and thus, they would be right there with Florida competing for the SEC crown every year.

Nothing a national 16 team playoff system would not solve. The Div I-AA polls during the year are accurate because voters are easily shown for being biased.

Mathews is one of the best NFL prospects- 220lbs and fast. He got 3 TDs and 200 plus yards. Definite stud.

One thing no one has mentioned is the temperature. It was over 100 at kickoff and probably stayed that way on the stadium floor. So all of the kids had to be tired. No wonder there were so many long plays-- tired defense = poor tackling.

Boise Escaped Fresno last night...Dogs made 3 costly plays they shouldnt have and that was the difference. Fresno beat them in every offensive category. Boise St schedules easy games and remains in the spotlight by going undefeated... Fresno consistantly schedules Tough opponents who will play them. The two programs are the same but with different strategies. Boise State's is working. Maybe it's time Fresno changes its approach...if thats what it takes to earn everyone respect.

How good is the Fresno running back Ryan Mathews? The guy is a beast. By the Fresno State is leading the NATION in rushing. Their only weakness offensively is at QB. Ryan Colburn is a
first year starter. But thats what is costing them. Other wise they WOULD have 3-0.
