Miami puts emphatic end to Tech hex, 33-17

MIAMI (AP)—Jacory Harris watched Georgia Tech run over, past and around Miami’s defense on the opening series of the game, barely showing any emotion on the sideline.

He saved it all for the field.

And Georgia Tech’s hex over Miami? It’s over.

Cool and in control throughout, Harris completed 20 of 25 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, and the 20th-ranked Hurricanes snapped a four-game losing streak against No. 14 Georgia Tech with a 33-17 victory Thursday night.

Miami scored on its first three possessions, built a 24-3 lead shortly after halftime and outgained the Yellow Jackets by nearly a 2-to-1 margin.

“One thing I congratulate this team on is how we stay focused,” Harris said. “You know, there’s a lot of people around campus and in the community, they praise us now and they’ve got our back and all this. But the thing I know about this team, we’re not (letting) anything go to our head.”

Miami (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) matched its best league start since 2004, outgained Georgia Tech 454-228 and set up a Coastal Division showdown at Virginia Tech on Sept. 26. Graig Cooper ran for 93 yards, Javarris James rushed for 72 more and a touchdown, and LaRon Byrd caught five passes for 83 yards and another score.

It’s the first time Miami has won consecutive games against ranked opponents since the end of the 2003 season.

“Big win for us tonight,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said. “Big, huge win. Big for this football team and this program.”

Georgia Tech (2-1, 1-1) blew Miami out a year ago, dooming the Hurricanes’ conference title hopes by rushing for 472 yards. This time, Miami handled the triple option with relative ease, holding the Yellow Jackets to 95 yards rushing — 60 of those coming on the game’s first drive.

Tech’s reigning ACC player of the year, fullback Jonathan Dwyer, was slowed by a shoulder injury—only a stinger, he said afterward—and finished with 7 yards on five carries. Josh Nesbitt completed 6 of 15 passes, all to Demaryius Thomas, for 133 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter.

“We could never get them off the field,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said. “In a game like that, you better maximize and we didn’t. We played very poorly on offense.”

Miami didn’t.

Other than two late missed field goals by Matt Bosher, there wasn’t much for Miami to complain about, and the Hurricanes sauntered off celebrating their most significant win in years. Even tight end Jimmy Graham—who spent four years on Miami’s basketball team—got into the act, catching a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Graham was the only Miami player ever to beat Georgia Tech before: He was 4-1 against the Yellow Jackets in basketball.

“This offense is not selfish,” Byrd said. “As long as we’re winning.”

Since taking a 24-0 lead against Clemson last Thursday night, Georgia Tech has been outscored 60-23.

“We just killed ourselves,” Dwyer said. “We didn’t play Georgia Tech football. I think we finally learned our lesson. We realized that if we don’t go out here and work hard, we’re going to get our butts kicked.”

Georgia Tech ran the ball on its first 12 plays, quickly forcing Miami into a series of frantic substitutions. Eric Moncur—Miami’s sixth-year defensive end who was injured most of last season and was held out of this year’s opener— got a big stop on third-and-6, forcing Tech to settle for a field goal.

The Yellow Jackets ran for 60 yards on that drive—and managed only 27 more the rest of the half.

Meanwhile, Harris was the picture of cool, setting the tone for the Miami sideline.

A 35-yard pass to Leonard Hankerson was immediately followed by a 40-yard toss to Byrd for Miami’s first touchdown. Dedrick Epps caught a 13-yarder for a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter, and Bosher connected on a 34-yard field goal with 5:45 left in the half.

“As long as we play as a team,” Harris said, “we’ll come out with victories like this.”

Meanwhile, even when Georgia Tech caught a break, the Jackets couldn’t cash in. A pass interference call against Vaughn Telemaque on fourth-and-12 from the Miami 29 extended one drive; the Yellow Jackets went for it there because kicker Scott Blair was 0 for 7 lifetime from outside 40 yards.

Three plays later, he tried a field goal from 39 yards: Wide right it sailed off the Florida Marlins’ infield dirt, only Blair’s second miss in 19 career tries from that distance or less, according to STATS LLC.

"171. Miami is certainly not one of the largest draws in the country. Hell they can't even sell out games in any sport!"

    1. You realize it is a private university, no some state factory with 50,000. Over 50% of the undergrads are not from Florida and the alumni base is nationwide, as people end up working in a lot of places, not just South Florida

    2. Florida subsidizes top in-state students (who have the grades to get into Miami) with full scholarships to state schools. So less in-state 'Canes, mommy and daddy sent them to UF, FSU, UCF to save money

    3. Unlike other one state/one team states (Wisconsin. Ohio, Nebraska, etc.), there are three other teams in state with BCS conference tie-ins with fans and larger student populations

So, be like one of those "we pack the stadium" people who mortgage the double-wide for tickets while the 'Canes draw the national TV ratings of millions of people, people who want to the see the next generation of soon to be NFL stars who will be saying "The U" on Sunday Night NFL in a couple of years.

The folks that do the ranking really have no idea of what they are doing! All logic is out of the window when it comes to rankings. To illustrate my point, Alabama plays North Texas but is ranked No. 4. Ohio State plays Toledo but is ranked in the top ten? Miami in the meantime plays its first two games against teams with national programs, FSU and Georgia Tech. And wins them both. Who is right and who is wrong. As we use to say in Latin, "contra factum, non validum argumentum". Roughly translated it means contrary to the fact there is no valid argument. The facts are on Miami's side.

Looks like it is the year for the comeback kids. First Michigan, and now Miami. Good job Canes. Keep it up. Though I am a diehard Michigan fan, I am impressed with Miami and especially your coach. He seems to have a good head on his shoulder.

Jose, Top 5 might be a bit of a reach, unless some upsets start happening, but if Miami wins the next 2 games, I can agree they are in at least the Top 10

If Miami beats VT and OK, they will be top 5..There is no way someone with a "little" knowledge of football won't rank them top 5...That is crazy 4 ranked teams, the first 4 games and GET 4 wins!!!

Good game canes, let's see how you look on the road. The jackets looked tired (like a team playing it's third game in 12 days) and the canes looked fresh (like a team waiting at home for 10 days getting ready), It will even out.

Win or loose , I'm a diehard canes fan since the Jimmy Johnson era . It would be nice to see JJ come back to coach miami back to national championship status. But Randy Shannon looks to be a coach on a mission and understands the concerns of the fans and the team to bring the canes back to national prominence.

A little history lesson for you folks. Like it or not, Miami cahnged the face of college football froever in 1983-84. When Howard Schnellenberger was hired in like '79, there was only one other candidate for the UM job. That candidate was Coach "Kill the football program like we killed the basketball program" :-o The only "name player at UM then was Jim Kelly, and he was there because Joe Paterno told him that he would be playing linebacker if he came to Penn State. In the space of 5 years, Howard took that program from the cellar to a national championship. UM beat what many still consider to be one of the greatest college football teams ever, Nebraska. The way he did it was twofold. First, Howard introduced the NFL style offense to the college game that teams like the Dolphins and Cowboys had been using in the 70's Secondly, he devised a defense to stop the wishbone triple option that teams like Nebraska and Oklahoma had used for decades. The trick was very simple. Stuff the fullback coming up the middle and use your defensive speed to string the play out to the sidelines. The funny part is that the kid who stuffed up the middle was Tony Fitzpatrick, an undersized nose tackle who only had one other scholarship offer, that being Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. It took a few years for teams to figure out that the game had changed (two losses by Oklahoma to Miami in the mid 80's ) but it did. The pro offense was here to stay, as were fast defenses. Howard's defense were known for their undersized and EXTREMELY fast players. What some of you may not know is that the reason they were undersized is that Howard made them lose weight and get into ridiculous physical shape. It is still the same way today in a lot of ways. That is why Miami alway owned the 4th quarter in the Orange Bowl. By then, the opposing team was huffing a pufing like Tech was last night..

You guys have a "sick" front 7, and an even sicker offensive line. Our undersized, heartless & undisciplined O-line, and our tired defense was still gassed from last Thurs. No hint of a pass rush whatsoever. If Tenuta was still here, we would have dialed up multiple blitz packages & gone for broke on every down last night & there would have been some pressure on Jacory. Still probably wouldn't have mattered though...our O-line is HOT GARBAGE!

these people that set the polls have no idea what college football is all about...every year it's the same teams in the top 5-6 spots u of florida, usc, texas, oklahoma, nebraska and of course they have to throw notre dame in the mix, they need to really take a good look at some other teams (teams with talent)...how was georgia tech ranked 14th and still 51/2 point underdogs to a 20th ranked u of miami...it seems the people that make the odds have better knowledge of what's going on with the game...one of the best examples of this is byu, byu as far as i'm concerned could play with any of the top three...and, then you have the canes, who have shocked the world with their first two games...i believe the canes are going to do a little more shocking this season-GO CANES!!!!!!

they do have a large natiowide fan base, but true fans are always there. in recent years miami has had several home games that have not sold out and haven't traveled well to away games.

i do think they are looking pretty good, my question is, if they lose to va tech and oklahoma, and are 2-2, will all the cane fans still be supporting their team in the stadium and on these threads?

Its all about da U. This is Hurnicane T and my boys on the sideline were so focused like I have not seen them before. There was swagger but earned swagger. NOt the waggin the swaggin trying to crawl out of a baggin swagger from recent years past. This was genuine. You could see it in the eyes.
Bring on da beamer ball and the Canes will make em fall. ...of course I am not going to dance to it until we earnit then bearnit on da field.
Swagger has to be earned... beyond puttin on da white helmet with da U.

If that QB Harris plays like he did last night...they will always be in the game against anyone. To go 20-25 and throw for 3 TDs and almost 300 yds is outstanding. One thing he does that they haven't had in a while with their QBs is put very soft touch on his passes. Some of those throws last night were beautiful. I'm a longhorn fan but it sure was fun watching Harris play last night. Don't worry Cane fans, I'll be pulling for The "U" agaisnt OU.

We'll know for sure if Miami is for real when they play VaTech. Canes looked good last night, but beating FSU isn't all that impressive when FSU had to score 2 TDs in the last 35 sec to beat Jack. St......at Home!

Hook Em' Horns! and I hope Miami keeps on winning!
