Safety gives No. 19 Tar Heels 12-10 win over UConn

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)—North Carolina needed to make a big defensive stop, and wound up getting some help from Connecticut’s Dan Ryan.

The Huskies’ senior tackle was flagged for holding defensive end Robert Quinn in the end zone with 1:32 left in the game Saturday, giving the No. 19 Tar Heels a safety and a 12-10 comeback win over the Huskies.

“I had him beat around the corner,” Quinn said. “I was just out there trying to make a play, and then I saw the flag.”

The play capped a 12-point fourth quarter for North Carolina (2-0). Casey Barth started the comeback with a 22-yard field goal, and T.J. Yates led the team on a 13-play drive that ended with his 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Zack Pianalto with 2:36 left.

Pianalto hurt his leg jumping up and down after the score and had to be taken from the field in an air cast, another bizarre moment from a game that ended in crazy fashion.

After the safety, UConn recovered the onside kick but couldn’t get into field-goal range.

“I told the chancellor, ‘That’s why you don’t see any 100-year-old football coaches,”’ said North Carolina coach Butch Davis.

The Tar Heels are 3-0 against the Huskies, while UConn has just one win in 14 games against Top 25 opponents.

UConn (1-1) was playing without its best defensive player, injured linebacker Scott Lutrus, and lost starting quarterback Zack Frazer to a knee injury late in the third quarter.

The Huskies’ stifling defense held North Carolina scoreless and with just 134 yards of offense through three quarters. They sacked Yates six times and intercepted him twice.

A 47-yard field goal from Dave Teggart at the halftime buzzer gave UConn a 3-0 lead. The Huskies seemed poised for an upset after cornerback Robert McClain batted Yates’ pass into the hands of Twyon Martin at the Tar Heels 26 late in the third quarter.

UConn tailback Jordan Todman dragged several defenders the final four yards for the score, putting the Huskies up 10-0.

“We slugged it out for the whole game,” said UConn coach Randy Edsall. “We just couldn’t make that play when we needed to, and that’s the bottom line.”

Yates, who completed 23 of 32 passes for 233 yards and two interceptions, found his groove in the fourth quarter. He led the Tar Heels on a 78-yard drive that ended with Barth’s field goal, and when UNC got the ball back, he marched 78-yards again, eating up 6:36 before finding Pianalto in the end zone from 2-yards out.

“We were just making adjustments on the run, throwing formations we hadn’t even practiced all week,” Yates said. “(We’d) pick things up, draw something in the dirt, see if that works, try something new out and see if that works. Once that was working, we just kept at it and kept at it and moved the ball down the field.”

The Huskies held North Carolina to just 65 yards in the first half, and pressured Yates all day, sacking him six times. But North Carolina’s defense held UConn to 196 yards, and dominated the Huskies in the fourth quarter.

UConn got the ball at the 20 after the tying touchdown, but a snap over backup quarterback Cody Endres’ head on second down put the ball at the 8-yard line.

Endres scrambled away from the pass rush on third down, and completed a 16-yard pass to Todman that would have given the Huskies a fourth-and-6. But there was the flag in the end zone, and the safety that gave North Carolina the lead.

“I didn’t even know that was a rule,” said Tar Heels cornerback Charles Brown Jr. “I heard the coaches screaming, ‘Safety, safety safety,’ so I started jumping up and down (yelling) ‘Safety, safety.”’

Ryan said he’s not going to let the call, or the negative attention, ruin his season.

“Nobody wants to be the guy sitting in this chair right now having to answer these questions,” he said. “I would rather be in the locker room celebrating with my team. Unfortunately, it did not work out that way today. This one game is not going to end our season, so we just have to get back out there and keep working hard.”

Later Saturday, North Carolina said that Pianalto suffered a dislocated right foot after landing on a defender’s foot and will need an MRI to determine how long he is out.

TO: BLUE215---"BOTH" teams made terrible mistakes including stupid turnovers. I never said the Tar Heels was great or elite(maybe if you could read comments, it would help) but they sure are alot better than in years past. As far as if they deserve to be ranked, well I dont get to vote and being as ignorant as you are, I doubt they ask your opinion. I guess we will find out in a few months as the season gets older if they are that good or not. I guess you still have a bad taste in your mouth from the final four last year when Uconn was OVERANKED and sent home while the Tar Heels won yet another National Championship. One thing a UNC fan knows is, how to take a win and enjoy it and also be a good sport when they lose without trashing the other team.

What a call, holding in the endzone for a safety. UNC can thank Jack Childress the referee. He loves hearing boos from the crowd and makes calls against the home team just for laughs.

I'm a UConn fan and I'm not impressed with their new "opened up" offense. 196 total yards!? That's worse than last year! If they couldn't win this game, it's probably going to be a long year. To all of you UNC fans- We know we don't have an "elite" football team. We still go and cheer our team on and hope for a win. But you think your team is so great. I have to say, I'm not impressed. Our team made terrible mistakes that cost them the game (3rd & 18, 3rd & 20, bad snap, hold in end zone). And even still they had the game won but blew it. UNC- Definitely not #19 nationally. Not even top 25.

That's a tough penalty to call, all things considered...it would have been nicer to see things settled in OT.

What this game shows is the steady progression of UNC football, we played the game with 3 starting offensive linemen not able to play and still come out with a win, give us a couple more years and we will reach that elite status.

I will admit as a Tarheel that we struggled today big time but a win is a win and were 2-0. If UNC plays like this next week then we will have a real tough time with ECU. I know were at home but ECU is a upset team. They always make me nervous. Should be a great game next Saturday. Really looking forward to it!

It sure wasnt a pretty win, but a "W" never the less. It was a very defensive game on both sides. Im a HUGE UNC Tar Heels fan, however I think its gonna take alot of practice and work for UNC to be an elite team. Win, lose or draw, I will always be a tar heels fan and I think Coach Davis is making great strides. The only thing I question, I think he went to Draughn too much and should have brought Houston in sooner, since Draughn wasnt effective at all.
Looking forward to next weeks game vs ECU, that should be a good one too.
    GO TAR HEELS!!!!!!!!

No DAVID what a chicken squat way to lose a game. And motoring, PJ, is must leave a bad taste in your mouths to lose to such a poor team with that elite football team and great coach the huskies have. Sure bring basketball into it too, the HEELS will win that one too. We don't think UNC has that great football team yet, but they are improving each year and we support them and our coach win or lose against N C State. Were not fair weather fans, just fans, try it, it really makes the sport more fun than just riding coat-tails whenever your team wins.

The Citadel, run the ball, with what, both of their good running backs were injured and didn't play in the game at all against the Heels, regardless the Citadel shut out UNC in the first quarter and drove to the one yard line, opting to lob out of reach passes into the end zone instead of running with whatever was left. This game showed nothing for Carolina, but an angry UCON, despite not having much of an f-ball program, will be a more legitimate test.

By the way, the only thing that has kept Butch Davis at N. Carolina is a lack of success there, he's still not over the 500 hump, with one mediocre bowl, and two straight losses to N. C. State, if he losses again to the Wolfpack, the faithful will be groaning much louder when ole' Butchy comes askin' for mo money!

... and so it goes, is it basketball time yet?

Edsall has a couple of surprises in his pocket for this one. North Carolina thinks they're still fighting the Civil War, but the "Yankees" won that one too....
