SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (AP)—Junior quarterback Tony Smith threw three touchdowns and ran for another Saturday to lead Cal Poly to a 38-19 victory over Sacramento State.
Smith finished 12 of 19 for 218 yards. He added 92 yards rushing for Cal Poly (1-0).
Last season, Cal Poly led the Football Championship Subdivision with 487.5 yards per game but lost their head coach, quarterback, leading receiver and top three rushers in the offseason. They still put up 476 yards against the Hornets (0-2), who had four turnovers.
Sacramento State closed within 17-12 with 1:59 left in the first half on Jason Smith’s 23-yard strike to Brett Willis.
Tony Smith answered with a 52-yard TD throw to Jon Hall with 34 seconds left to take a 24-12 halftime lead. The Mustangs added two more TD in the third quarter to seal the win.
Jason Smith finished 16 of 30 for 217 yards and two scores.
