No. 2 Longhorns race past Wyoming after slow start

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP)—It wasn’t just the lung-searing altitude that bothered Colt McCoy and No. 2 Texas in the first half of the Longhorns’ first trip to War Memorial Stadium, alt. 7,200 feet.

The weight of expectations were bogging them down, too.

McCoy warmed up after a shaky start and Texas overcame spotty special teams play and a sputtering first half to beat Wyoming 41-10 on a cold and breezy Saturday.

“I think I was trying to do too much, try to make something happen that wasn’t there,” McCoy said of his slow start. “I fumbled once, the ball slipped out of my hands, made a stupid throw on a crossing route. I saw the (defender) and threw it right to him. It’s just all mental and those things have to pass.

“The way we responded in the second half was a tribute to our team.”

Texas coach Mack Brown said the Longhorns had so much fun last year because nobody expected them to have a great season. This year, everybody does and he senses his players not enjoying the game as much.

“We all expect to score every play and that’s just unrealistic,” Brown said.

The Longhorns (2-0) uncharacteristically committed a dozen penalties and looked ready to be lassoed until taking a 13-10 lead just before halftime when McCoy executed the one-minute offense to perfection and finally got Texas into the end zone.

After sucking wind all day, the Longhorns finally exhaled.

“I just feel like once our offense gets hot, it’s going to stay hot,” Longhorns defensive end Sergio Kindle said.

McCoy completed 30 of 47 passes for 337 yards and three TDs with an interception. He missed 17 or more passes for just the third time in his career, including a dozen in the first half, when he was intercepted by linebacker Weston Johnson.

“I looked at his numbers at halftime and I felt like he was pressing—and gosh, he was 17 of 29 for 166 yards passing and a touchdown,” Brown said. “So, our standards are pretty high for him and he understands that. But I thought he had more fun the second half, too.”

In a nice warmup for Texas Tech next week, the Longhorns’ defense held the Cowboys (1-1) out of the end zone and limited them to 3-for-17 on third down in helping to secure the Longhorns’ 15th straight non-conference win, tying a school record established in the 1940s.

“I thought our defense pitched a shutout,” Brown said. “… But we’ve still got a lot to work to do and it’s fun when you can win 41-10 and still feel like you’ve got a lot of things to fix.”

Texas had a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and also a fake punt that didn’t work and led to Wyoming’s other points and a fake field goal that failed.

Wyoming took a 10-6 lead with 92 seconds left before halftime when Luke Ruff blocked John Gold’s punt and fellow freshman Ghaali Muhammad scooped up the bouncing ball and scampered 6 yards for the touchdown that gave the Cowboys their only lead.

This was the wake-up call for Texas, which finally quit hitting the snooze button and scored the next 35 points, starting with a 25-yard TD toss from McCoy to James Kirkendoll that capped a six-play, 70-yard drive.

They needed just five plays to score on McCoy’s 9-yard keeper after D.J. Monroe returned the second-half kickoff 41 yards to the Wyoming 40. McCoy also threw long TD passes to Dan Buckner and John Chiles sandwiched around Tre’ Newton’s touchdown run.

Newton led the ‘Horns with 62 yards and eight carries after Vondrell McGee (11 carries, 61 yards) tweaked a sore ankle.

The ‘Horns managed just two field goals on their first eight possessions, and Justin Tucker failed to gain the first down on a fake punt from the Texas 9, which led to Austin McCoy’s 22-yard field goal that tied it at 3.

“I am proud of this team,” Wyoming first-year coach Dave Christensen said. “We talked at halftime and the end of the game that we will never accept moral victories. We either win or we get whooped, and in the second half of the game we got whooped.”

The Longhorns, playing the Cowboys for the first time in 31 years and in Laramie for the first time ever, acknowledged they needed time to adjust to the altitude.

And defensive end Sam Acho said they missed their band, which was absent at a Longhorns game for the first time since the 1984 Freedom Bowl in what Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds explained was both an economic decision and a matter of space.

The UT fans got 3,800 tickets to War Memorial Stadium, which had a standing room-only crowd of 31,017, a far cry from the Longhorns’ stadium where they opened the season last week in front of 101,096 fans, the largest crowd ever to watch a football game in the state of Texas.

“I’m like, ‘Where is everybody?”’ marveled Newton.

Wyoming is the doormat of the MWC. The Longhorns should play another MWC team......BYU, Utah............or the TCU Horned Frogs.................the best team in Texas.

you are probably right.Texas was looking ahead to their next game.does Laramie,Wy even have an airport you can fly into. Besides, most of the Texas players played in better football stadiums when they were in high school

Is that because the Texicans spend more money on football stadiums then they do education?

Hey Dingus, is your name Dingus because you ARE a ''DINGUS''. Texas beat Wyoming 41-10 in case you didnt see the score and McCoy had 340+ passing yards with 3 TDs and 40+ rushing yards with a TD. Those stats couldnt have hurt McCoy even if you were the deciding factor for the Heisman. Get real man, even though he had that one interception he's still a front-runner for the Heisman. Tech better be ready 'cause Texas is looking for redemption AND they play in AUSTIN. Texas will be fired up but im not 'gonna say they will win mainly because I said that last year. ALL the hype around Texas has come from fans and programs that will either play Texas or has. None of the hype comes from the Texas program itself. Mack and crew NEVER overlook an opponent no matter who it is and never underestimate anybody. This was the first game of a 3 game series for Texas/Wyoming so of course Texas had to give the Wyoming peeps a little motivation to fill in the stands starting next year when they play in Austin. HOOK 'EM BABY

You texas fan have amit that you were a little scared when things weren't going your way and when you wanted that 70 to zero win. I bleed brown and gold. But i didn't expect us to win because we are not at that level yet. I see us getting better as the year goes along. The cowboys did what i hoped that they would play with the Longhorns. But it has been as of lately in the last 10 years Wyoming's down play is start strong and end like they did yesterday. I have a feeling that we are going to take it to CU next week. You big 12ers i would be getting scared of the Mountain West when BYU wins the national championship this year.

I hope Wyoming didn't think they actually had a chance against Texas. Wyoming..........well, let's just say they need some work..........a lot of work. Wyoming, as usuall, will be lucky to have one or two wins and then flop the rest of the season. Go Longhorns!!!!!!!!!

It was a lackluster but not unexpected start for "Pistols McCoy" (heh...I love that nickname!) and the Texas offense as a whole. What on earth was he thinking when he tried to flip that underhand pass? When I saw that I thought for sure that Peter Gardere had returned for a 5th year of eligibility! LOL...Colt is such a great guy on and off the field (clone him now before graduation!) and is entitled to an occasional brainfart considering the immense pressure he shoulders on a daily basis.

Oh, and special teams...WTF were you guys doing in practice all week? I feel sorry for those coaches. Big Mack is a loveable teddy bear in front of the media, but he can chew serious ass when the need arises. That is precisely why he is the winningest coach in all college football over the past 10 years and the biggest difference between these and your father's Longhorns. John Mackovic and his toothless predecessors lacked the balls to put the fear of God into players and coaches when it needed to be done.

I don't know what he says or how he does it, but Mack Brown always seems to make the right halftime adjustments and the kids bounce back like a nuclear bomb. Under those past coaches nothing effective would have happened at halftime and the Horns might very well have become intimidated by the spastic road crowd and upset by an obscure opponent that gets all geeked up because Texas is coming to town.

Speaking of spastic and geeked up...lock your cars and set the alarms when you park next Saturday...those Texas Tech people will be in town and they still think they are rivals with Texas. Sorry, flatlanders, it takes two to dance that tango and you'll always be that little obnoxious school that rode Ut's coattails out of the SWC. Yes, it can be overwhelming coming into the big city and feeling the excitement of a real college team that packs in 101,000+ but please try to control yourselves and stop vandalizing our cars.

UT got off to a slow start. but like all great teams, they shut down Wyoming and ran off 35 unanswered to finish them off. Wyo. made some very good plays, and their small crowd just couldn't given them anough support to get past UT. While the Longhorns won the game, I'm not sure how many other people watching the game thought they could be national champions this year. But the loyal burnt orange fans will believe. Glad I have long been a UT fan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Horns first half was the worst showing of a ranked Div I team. McCoy looked lost. Even a 2nd half collapse by Wyoming won't help his chances for a Heisman now.

Look at the other teams and who they play, AR St, Id St, Syracuse, Charleston So, Eastern WA, Mia (OH), san Jose St, Troy. Not demeaning these schools, just comparing schedules. Also remember, Wisconsin and Arkansas backed out of the Longhorns scheduling. Were the horns overconfident, I would guess a good possibility. They can't play like that if they want to get to the Rose. Injuries are creeping up. Everyone has to contribute. Hook em. Beat the Red Raiders.

Texas may have started a bit rusty ,but at least our STAR QB is tough as nails and runs the team with ease! Also McCoy will win the Heisman if he will step it up a notch and run a bit more, but no matter that cause we 2-0 ,and OU and OSU are 1-1 ,LOL!! Texas is a lock for the BIG12 Title and the National Title !!! Hopefully we get to stomp Florida at the end! HOOK EM ' HORNS 4 LIFE!!!!!!!!!!

OK State, sit in it and smell the funk, you just lost to an unranked Houston team in your Billion Dollar complex.
