Kansas defense leads the way against UTEP

EL PASO, Texas (AP)—This border run was a big fiesta for the Kansas defense.

While the No. 22 Jayhawks get plenty of attention for their prolific offense, the guys on the other side of the ball led the way in a 34-7 victory over Texas-El Paso on Saturday night.

The forecast coming in suggested a much closer contest. Last year, Kansas ranked 114th nationally in pass defense while UTEP, under coach Mike Price, has always used a big-play offense. Miners quarterback Trevor Vittatoe threw a school-record 33 touchdown passes last fall.

The result?

Kansas (2-0) had five sacks in the first half, all by the defensive front. Vittatoe spent most of the night on the run or on his back, freeing the linebackers to help with coverage and making life good for the secondary.

Afterward, the Jayhawks praised the push by their defensive linemen.

“It makes the quarterback think,” cornerback Daymond Patterson said. “It makes him get the ball out that much faster. He’s running around more, his stamina is down and his passes aren’t as accurate. It makes it easier to be a defensive back.”

The Miners (0-2) finished with 4 rushing yards, 208 total yards and the fewest points for UTEP in Price’s six seasons in El Paso. Only two possessions ended in Kansas territory.

“I am a little bit surprised that we didn’t play better against their defense,” Price said. “They didn’t do anything we didn’t seen in films. What surprised us was that they were that good.”

The only setback for Kansas? Vittatoe threw a 75-yard catch-and-run TD to Donavon Kemp early in the fourth quarter, breaking up the shutout.

“We shouldn’t have let that happen but it’s hard to complain,” Jayhawks coach Mark Mangino said. “We were really stellar on defense tonight.”

Kansas had just 13 1/2 sacks last season. If there was to be any improvement, any coach will tell you the action starts up front.

Mangino has been keeping an eye on the defensive line lately in practice. End Jeff Wheeler credited coordinator Clint Bowen’s game plan against UTEP but also said Mangino has been helping by emphasizing hand work and getting up close with the linemen.

“It’s a little intimidating sometimes,” Wheeler said. “He gets us going. We want to do a good job for him every day. He gets on people sometimes.”

The Kansas defense timed it well because it wasn’t a star performance by quarterback Todd Reesing. He played into the fourth quarter and completed 25 of 41 attempts for 260 yards passing with one TD and one interception. Those are respectable numbers, of course, but Reesing has raised expectations for his play and he was out of sync most of the night.

Fans back on the plains must have been concerned when Kansas led 3-0 in the second quarter.

Then the Jayhawks got on track, scoring 17 more points by the half. Tailback Jake Sharp, who finished with 104 yards rushing, ran for a 1-yard TD, caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Reesing and then added a 3-yard TD run midway through the third quarter.

The Jayhawks finished with 576 total yards and ran nearly twice as many plays as UTEP.

“We left a lot of points on the field,” said receiver Dezmon Briscoe, who returned from a one-game suspension and had eight catches for 154 yards. “But for us to have a bad day on offense and still score 34 points, I feel like we still did all right.”

The Jayhawks are looking to continue the momentum.

They’re home for the next month, facing Duke next weekend, then Southern Mississippi, a bye week and Iowa State before their next road trip to Colorado on Oct. 17.

“Week in and week out, we want to win every game,” Sharp said. “Hopefully, it starts rolling.”

you guys keep talking about how nebraska is on a downward spiral and we will never be back to where we were in the 90's, and how kansas is the big up and coming team of the 2000 era. you guys have had one good season. before that you were the big 12 doormat every year ranked right next to isu. there is no football tradition in kansas. did you forget last yrs game? a new coach steps in and changes the whole offense and defense and again we beat you. yet you keep runnin ur mouth about how good you are. you dont play a good tem all season until what, the 6th game. %^&* mangini, ^&*( reesing, and %^&* jayhawk football.

I was at the game when KU hung 76 points. I had a blast, it was my 22nd birthday and I was watching the game with my dad. There were some husker fans that had made the trip right by us. They were nothing but class through out the entire game, staying until the end. Not all Nebraskans are as foolish as Penderov, and maybe we're a bit foolish for even responding to such rubbish.

    Rock Chalk :D

Hey penderov, nobody cares what you have to say. The points you're trying to make are at best a stretch at this point. Nebraska isn't a football powerhouse anymore than KU is at this point. We could easily say the same things about Nebraska when it comes to basketball championships, and state the obvious if that will prove anything. Does it change anything, not to me because I have a life. I can realize real facts, such as, I never played for KU and you never played for NU. So take your foolish pride and put it to some good use. Sports are not life and do not define you when you aren't really a part of the team. Be a fan, support your team, but shut the f_ck up if you haven't won anything of any importance since Clinton was in office. Be bold with your claims to your National Championships but remember you shared 2 of them.
The last time NU came to Kansas, the Jayhawks hung 76 on the Huskers and you wanna talk about something stinging. I remember laughing through that entire game, and the look on the faces of the NU fans was one of sorrow. They had been stung. Each of them probably had the same dumb@$$ thoughts that you just shared, and showed that you cannot let go. A legacy is something great, losing that legacy is not and I think at that point Husker fans understood that the legacy was gone for good. Hope you enjoy the let down....again.

I hope Penderov's grammer is not evidence of a good Husker education... :)

Draw as much comfort as you want from the past, Mr. P., but today's football games are being played in the present. On that basis, Mangino has done the heavy lifting with his team (no pun intended) and has constructed a solid offense and a credible, but improving, defense. North of the border, what used to be a dreaded power offense has crumbled in recent years into nothing. Sure, perhaps NU will be able to rebuild, but they're not there now. And just one question ... in '07, didn't KU hand NU its worst loss ever in modern times?

As Mr. P so aptly showed, when a person lacks substance in his (or her) comments, that's when they typically result to yelling, screaming, and insults. Speaks for itself.

Penderov? What kind of name is that? Russian? A Russian Nebraska fan..awesome grammar, also. And gayhawk..haha that's original. Mature too..these insults really hurt coming from an illiterate idiot like you. Man your mascot refers to you growing crops. Cool. Douchebag..like all my boys from Kansas have already wrote on this blog, you live in the past. When we beat your ass in football, don't get to depressed cause you'll get us in basketball! Oh wait..no you won't beat us in that either.

The D looked improved, but what a disaster of a team we played. If I were a Miner, I'd have Price's job. Him and Hawkins would be out on their AAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. But that's just me. I wonder if we'll see teams continue to drop so many Dbacks. If so, Sharp and Opurum can run between the tackles all night. Couple that scheme with the wind that was blowing in the bowl, and that should explain some of Reesing's slow start.

Did anyone else notice that the stupid CBS crew had real trouble getting the down and yards to go box filled in correctly or at all?

About Braskatard: Look, his lack of humility is something to remember when an up and coming bball school fan gets excited about his team. Don't throw in the nat'l titles and championships in his face. It won't matter to him. It only matters to us.

I really don't understand why a Nebraska fan is even reading and commenting here! He had to be checking out how the Hawks did tonight. Wondering if he could find a glimpse of hope that somehow Nebraska could beat KU this year. He seems to have some pent up anger issues because of his loser in an out of jail legacy his players have lately. As well as the losing teams that have been put on the field. Penderov has to resort to foul language an insults to make himself feel better. Why don't you just sit down and put on one of your 8 track tapes, and pop in a vhs of one of your old time games you recorded and reminisce about days of old. Because that is not your present, it is your past. I'll give your school credit for seemingly hiring a better coach who is making improvements. But NE is not there yet!!

    Oh Yeah,,,,,, GO HAWKS

I really need to stop reading these comments. for every good comment that has some intelligent thought to it there's 5 from the likes of Penderov. Yes we all know how great Nebraska has been. But what have they done the last five years? No double digit win seasons, two losing seasons, last time they went to a BCS bowl game was in 2000. Your past teams don't mean jack, it's time to start living in the present. This years game is in Lawrence where KU has beaten them the last two times, including the 76points we hung on them in 07. Nebraska's time has come and went. KU has major steps to take to be considered a national threat but the only reason Nebraska is ranked is because of their past. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!!!!

I wish Pick would of played all of 4th qt. I heard he runs a 4.4 40 . I would like to see his arm. I think he is a true sleeper. 6-2 205 freshman 4.4 and has a better arm than reesing

KU needs a much better field goal kicker. Brandstetter just doesn't convert field goals from outside 30 yards. He had that problem last year too.

    penderov,

Nebraska fans are stuck in the past. I mean I get it, thats all you can crow about seeing how you guys have sucked for a while now. The past doesn't matter, only the present so be prepared for 11/14 when your team will get pounded by the Jayhawks!

Oh, and we may not win the national title, but we WILL win the Big 12 North. Nobody can stop our offense. Reesing is deadly efficient as QB. The combo of Meier and Briscoe at WR will be too much to handle. They got the running game going now. Pick showed he can run just as well as Reesing.

Once the defense tightens up, KU will be a force. Nobody can stop our offense; that's for sure.

I'm so glad Captain Obvious Penderov pointed out how the Jayhawks used to struggle.

Wait a minute.. we are chokers? That's funny. We won 3 bowl games in a row. Don't see much choking going on there.

Yeah, so we don't have the same legacy as Nebraska. That's not the point. The point is KU is clearly rebuilding and getting better and competing consistently year in and year out. Mangino has the program going in the right direction and KU has been dangerous ever since they took over. It's not about the past; it's about the future, as Scott and Nancy said. Mangino has laid the foundation for great KU football. KU will be moving forward, while you Nebraska fans are stuck with your past legacy. Have fun with that.

Kansas should win this game. But the defense needs to show plenty of improvement. I would certainly not be excited for the upcoming Big 12 schedule if we won 45-41 to an over-matched opponent.
