AUBURN, Ala. (AP)—Kodi Burns had three 1-yard touchdown runs and threw for another in Auburn’s 49-24 win over Mississippi State on Saturday night.

The Tigers’ diversified new offense gained 589 yards to help Auburn score its most points in an SEC game since 2005—a year after these two teams played to a 3-2 final won by Auburn.

Ben Tate ran for 159 yards and Onterio McCalebb got 120 yards, becoming the first freshman to run for more than 100 in his first two games at Auburn (2-0, 1-0).

Burns, the Tigers’ former starting QB, took snaps from offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s wildcat formation on all four TDs he had a hand in, including the 13-yard pass to tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen.

Quarterback Chris Todd was 10 of 23 for 186 yards and no interceptions.

Anthony Dixon carried 20 times for 92 yards and a score for Mississippi State (1-1, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) after sitting out a game’s suspension following a DUI arrest.

Darvin Adams caught five passes for 116 yards, all in the first half.

Mississippi State went ahead 17-14 when Patrick Hanrahan blocked a punt and Robert Elliott returned it 10 yards for a touchdown about five minutes before halftime.

On Auburn’s next possession, McCalebb took a pitch around left end 48 yards for a touchdown. Burns added a scoring run from the wildcat to give Auburn a 28-17 lead at halftime.

Auburn continued to dominate in the second half, scoring twice in the third quarter—on Burns pass to Lutzenkirchen and on a 35-yard run by Tate. It was Lutzenkirchen’s first career reception.

Mississippi State got a one-yard touchdown run by Christian Ducre early in the fourth quarter before Burns scored on another one-yard run from the wildcat with 5:19 left.

The teams traded scores in a wild first quarter before Auburn took charge late in charge late in the second quarter.

The Tigers jumped off to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring first on one of Burns’ scores as Auburn showed it would rely heavily on the wildcat. Burns carried four times for 11 yards and two touchdowns from the formation in the first half.

Defensive end Antonio Coleman had an interception return for a touchdown.

The Bulldogs stormed back early in the second quarter, sparked by the return of Dixon, who scored on a one-yard run with 12:05 before halftime. Dixon rushed nine times for 50 yards on the 12-play drive.

Really it's just Auburn who cares. That's why there are only 16 posts prior to mine. It's Auburn and nobody gives a crap. Yeah Auburn, so far you played two lousy teams and you put up a bunch of points, SO WHAT! Just had to get on here and rag the handful of fans that follow this god foresaken team.

Happy to see Auburn get the win but they will have to get better. What I Iiked most about this game was how they responded to being down. They stepped up and made some big plays to take back the lead and controlled the game for the duration. The strength of this team right now is McCaleb and Tate. I am still not comfortable with the play at QB. It seemed like Todd just threw up too many balls that were up for grabs and we were fortunate to come up with some without them getting picked off. West Virginia and Tennessee are two games that will really let us know if Auburn is for real.

Auburn will not go far with Todd. In fact Auburn had a QB issue when it comes to consistant passing

Like the others, it's good to see Auburn moving the ball and putting points on the board (especially in the 2nd half) but it is early in the season yet and the real tests are coming soon. WDE and loving me some McCalebb right now!! Tyrik should get a shot at QB soon if they are not going to RS him unless he has been already.

For ScottyC -- yes, I remember "punt Bama punt" 17-16 AUBURN! Alabama attempted two field goal attemps for three points. Both were blocked by the same individual, and both were ran back for touch downs by the same individual (the score was Alabama 16, Auburn 3 before the two punts (that looked almost exactly like a re-run) ..... Hey, I can do even better ... I even had the BUMPER STICKER the following week that I put on my old 66 Mercury Comet until it finally faded away! punt Bama punt WAR EAGLE to you!

It's nice to see that Auburn's team is showing some solid improvements and gains but I am leery of declarations that this is Auburn's year, etc. There'll be some good surprises and games, a loss or two or four, but it appears that Mr. Chizik and his table of excellent coaches has got some good momentum going.

Much too early to declare Auburn as back.

People put way too much stock in these early games.

I think rankings should not even be put out until week 9 or 10. By then we have a somewhat decent idea about who is who.

LSU may suck or maybe Washington and Vandy are really good. BYU might be the best team out there...or maybe OU just really sucks this year. USC and Ohio State might both suck or might both be great.

TOO EARLY to truly know anything.

Ive been an Auburn fan for about 23 years. They looked good tonight but I still think they are to young and have a whole new system to continue to get familiar with. I still think they will have whats called a winning season anyway though. I would love nothing more than to see Auburn beat up on teams like LSU and Bama, but i just dont think they will have it together enough yet to handle them. But until then........ War Damn Eagle!
