KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Even with offensive guru Norm Chow in the press box, UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel turned to his defense with the game on the line.
It was the right call.
UCLA stopped Tennessee’s Montario Hardesty on fourth-and-2 in the closing minutes, and the Bruins made it two in a row against the Volunteers with a 19-15 victory Saturday.
“We will be a better offense,” Neuheisel said. “But given the way our offense was playing, I thought it was better to put it in (the defense’s) hands.”
Trailing by 6, the Vols (1-1) had a chance to take the lead after driving 52 yards, but UCLA (2-0) held fast and Lane Kiffin lost for the first time as Tennessee coach.
The Vols’ defense, led by Monte Kiffin, had been battering the Bruins’ offense for much of the day. UCLA had only 186 yards of offense compared to Tennessee’s 208. The Bruins had four fewer first downs, held the ball for three fewer minutes and had 60 more yards in penalties.
Tennessee reached UCLA’s Kevin Prince many times, but usually after he released the ball. After Hardesty was stopped, Tennessee got a safety when Dennis Rogan sacked Prince, giving him a bloody mouth.
An inept Jonathan Crompton couldn’t do anything with the last-minute opportunity after getting the ball back, taking a sack and throwing three incomplete passes.
Lane Kiffin said he saw a few of his players trying to point fingers in the locker room after the game.
“I told them that isn’t what we are. That isn’t what a championship mentality is. A little bit of finger pointing came out and we have to teach them,” he said. “You either win or you lose, and everybody on that team lost today.”
For the Bruins, the win in Neyland Stadium in front of 102,239 fans was a big step toward recovering from last year’s 4-8 finish.
“We’re hungry,” safety Rahim Moore said. “We are trying to come out every day and every weekend to prove to the world that UCLA is who UCLA is.”
For the Vols, it means a lot of work this week as they prepare for a trip to Florida—especially on Crompton, who unraveled after throwing five touchdown passes in the season opener against Western Kentucky.
On the first play after halftime, he threw his third interception of the day and second to Moore, who has five for the season. Kai Forbath kicked a 39-yard field goal four plays later for a 13-10 lead.
“I just read the quarterback,” Moore said. “I knew that Crompton had some skills, but I also knew that he could throw a pick because any quarterback can. I was just sitting back and reading the quarterback.”
Kiffin, who has pledged not to shuffle quarterbacks during games, stuck with Crompton. Tennessee went three-and-out on its next two drives, and Forbath answered with field goals of 31 and 47 yards to give UCLA a 19-10 lead with 2:39 in the third quarter.
Forbath, who beat Tennessee with an overtime field goal in California last season, made four field goals in the rematch.
Prince finished 11-for-23 for 101 yards and the one touchdown. Johnathan Franklin had 80 yards rushing.
In the second quarter, Crompton fumbled a snap at the Tennessee 36, and Jerzy Siewierski recovered. A few plays later, Prince threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Chane Moline as he was being hit, tying the score at 10 with 7:09 before halftime.
Crompton threw interceptions on the next two drives. He overthrew Gerald Jones on the first and hit Moore instead. On the second, he threw right to Alterraun Verner.
“I didn’t do a very good job today taking care of Jonathan,” Lane Kiffin said. “I gave him a couple of calls unfortunately that didn’t put him in the best position. We’ve got to do a better job around him.”
Crompton completed 13 of 26 passes for 93 yards. Hardesty finished with 89 yards rushing.
But the Bruins couldn’t capitalize on either. UCLA went three-and-out on the first, and Forbath missed a 51-yard field goal to end the half.
UCLA had its own problems hanging onto the ball. The Bruins fumbled five times, losing the ball once.
Willie Bohannan sacked Prince, causing a fumble, and Gerald Williams recovered at the UCLA 11. Hardesty took care of the rest on the next play to put Tennessee up 10-3 with 2:58 in the first quarter.
“We really didn’t get into our groove as an offense,” Crompton said. “When you don’t, some doubts come, but the upside is we were in that game at the end. We had four turnovers and we still came up 1 yard short. That is the one positive.”

It is unfair to Coach Kiffin and his staff, for people to expect him to turn it around INSTANTLY! He's only been there a few months and he's already recruited a class, that's FAR better, than anything Tennessee has had, in a long time.
When did Phillip Fulmer ever recruit a top 4 Class? I'll tell you when!....NEVER!

May florida kick your sorry excuse of a football team right between the eyes along with Georgia and the rest of the SEC!

2. Go Bruins!
3. It's going to be two consecutive weeks that Lane Kiffin eats humble pie
4. Why doesn't the SEC schedule more games with the Pac-10 instead of Troy, Western Kentucky, Southeastern Missouri Valley A&M, etc. At least Georgia and Tennessee had the balls to schedule Big 12 and Pac 10 teams though UT did lose to Cal and UCLA 3 out of the 4 times.
5. ESPN analysts/commentators are a farce and complete puppets for the SEC, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and anything SEC
6. Did anyone else see that phantom offsides call on UT's last offensive play?
7. Crompton makes Kevin Craft look like Kevin Prince.
Thank you

Unless you are playing for the Gaytors personally, you won't be showing Tennessee fans @#$%. LOL. As a gaytor fan, enjoy my vote for National Chumps again this year.

So, in other words, both defenses were good. But NO, no credit is given to UCLA for the win, just an "error prone " Volunteer team. Give me a break. This is the same Tennessee team that ran up the score a week previous. Give credit where it is due. UCLA is not a great team, and probably won't make a bowl (which sucks), but they are obviously BETTER THAN TENNESSEE.

BUT! No way in HELL, do I want to go back to the days of Phillip Fulmer! Fulmer hasn't been a good Coach, since Tennessee awarded him that big FAT contract, about a decade ago! Remember, Kiffin didn't exactly walk into a great situation. He took over a DISASTER!
If you people are that quick, to throw the man under the bus, that doesn't say much for you, as Fans. This thing isin't going to turn around overnight. So, exercise a little patience. I would not want to go back to the way things have been lately, for ANYTHING in the world.
Yes, Kiffin has made some mistakes, by shooting off his mouth but, I'm willing to give him a chance. As for Crompton, I'll just say, that guy has been a huge disapointment.

Now in the icy grips of a post-loss hangover I realize: If Kiffen were that imaginative or Crompton that talented, there would be no need.
Oh well, I survived my undergrad years with Bill Battle on the sidelines. As I learned when I moved to Miami after graduation, 'Cheer for whoever is handy'. It worked well with the 'Canes. Now that I am back in Nashville, MTSU didn't look too bad yesterday. The Vols will be back and I just saved a bundle on airfare this bowl season.

Well, the difference that year was that Ainge was QB..Crompton has thrown more Ints in 2 games than Ainge did his whole tenure at UT (being a little sarcastic but you get the point).
Tennessee has a good team...it's the QB AKA Crompton that has single handling lost most of these games the past couple of years as well as get the whole UT staff fired last year. You can put that on Crompton's sholders.
Kiffen and crew will get the program back. They're doing a GREAT job at recruiting. In College, it's more about the JOE's than X's and O's. We'll have to endure this season and most likley next season to get our program back to where it was. Remember, he's working with Fulmer's recruiting class right now.
But the PAC-10 is a good conference. Our VOLS have let the SEC down the past few years now. Losses to UCLA, CAL, Penn State, Notre Dame, Maryland. USC could for sure hang in the with the SEC elite and be highly competitive. They're a great team. I'd like to see Florida and USC play for the National Championship this year. I think the Tennessee program is next in line to be an elite team in the SEC. Florida will drop off next year because they're losing pretty much everyone. It's looking like Tennessee will get another top recruiting class for next year and they're playing ALOT of freshmen now (I think 11 played). I think this year, Tennessee will be 7-9th best in the SEC and MAYBE go to a bowl game. So heck, we may have a rematch!!
anyways, the fidle is playing...gotta stick to your team through the good and bad times...just so happens our VOLS our rebuilding this year so a lot of cursing, beer drinking and tears will be in store for the VOL nation this year. Kiffen has 3 years to start winning or I'll jump on the badwagon with all the haters. Class or no class, it's all about winning and recruiting. Fulmer had all the class in the world and look what happened.
enough crying on the VOL loss...Titan loss Thursday, a pittiful performance by the VOLS...time to fire up the grill and get ready for the men to play football and hope my fantasy team doesn't lose too...
GO VOLS!

the argument will go on...remember, our VOLS are basically the worst team in the SEC behind Mississippi State. If you want to get on your high horse for beating the worst team in a conference then go ahead.
