Georgia holds on to beat South Carolina 41-37

ATHENS, Ga. (AP)—After everything that happened over nearly four hours—the kickoff return for a touchdown, the interception for a TD, the safety, the blocked extra point, the 24 penalties—it all came down to one play, one make-or-break decision.

Rennie Curran took a step forward, thinking he would have to make a tackle. Then he stopped, stuck out his left hand and batted down the final pass of a wild night.

No. 21 Georgia had survived. Barely.

Curran broke up Stephen Garcia’s fourth-down pass from the 7-yard line with 22 seconds remaining, and the Bulldogs held off South Carolina 41-37 Saturday night.

“Man, it was a nail-biting play,” Curran said. “I was kind of put in a bind because it looked like Garcia was about to tuck it and run into the end zone.”

Instead, Garcia decided to throw his 53rd pass of the night to a receiver cutting behind Curran. The junior linebacker reached out and swatted the ball to the ground.

“I knew he liked to like to hit his tight end on that play,” Curran said. “I didn’t know whether to come up and try to hit him or stay back in coverage. As soon as I took a step forward, he lobbed it up and I was able to stick my hand out there and tip the ball down.”

The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) avoided their first 0-2 start since 1996. South Carolina (1-1, 0-1) was hurt by a blocked extra point after its final touchdown, which prevented the Gamecocks from going for a tying field goal at the end.

The goal-line stand set off a raucous celebration for the relieved crowd at Sanford Stadium. Curran rolled on the ground with Brandon Boykin, who had a huge game for the Bulldogs. Bryan Evans did a somersault.

“So many things happened, I don’t even know where to start,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “The bottom line is, we got it done. We got it done at the end.”

Boykin set a school record with a 100-yard kickoff return and set up a score with an interception. South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood returned an interception 35 yards for a TD. Spencer Lanning tied a Gamecocks record with five field goals, pulled off a fake punt but had that crucial extra point blocked. The Bulldogs took a safety when Ty Frix snapped the ball over the punter’s head and through the end zone.

“There were a lot of big plays all over the place,” South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. “We almost came back.”

Garcia completed 31 of 53 passes for 313 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. Joe Cox, who heard reports during the week that he was suffering from a sore arm or shoulder and might not even start, threw for 201 yards and a pair of TDs, though he also gave up a score on the ill-advised throw to Norwood.

“We wanted this win more than anything,” Cox said. “It’s something that hopefully will give us some momentum.”

He also cleared up the questions about his health, saying he’s had a problem with his shoulder for about a year but there’s nothing that can be done surgically and it doesn’t affect his throwing anyway.

“I warmed up before the game, and it felt pretty good,” he said. “It didn’t bother me today.”

Everyone counted on a defensive struggle, based on the series history and the way the teams played in their season openers.

Neither team had scored more than 20 points on the other in the last five meetings. Besides, Georgia was coming off a 24-10 loss to Oklahoma State, while South Carolina had eked out an ugly 7-3 win over N.C. State.

Instead, this was a shootout right from the start. South Carolina raced to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, but Georgia rallied for a 31-23 edge at halftime. The Bulldogs looked to be pulling away as they took the second-half kickoff and drove for another score, Cox hitting Michael Moore with a 4-yard TD pass to make it 38-23.

But Lanning hit his fourth and fifth field goals, sandwiched around Frix’s errant snap over Drew Butler’s head to give the Gamecocks another two points.

Then, South Carolina looked as though it had tied it up when Norwood reached up to grab Cox’s pass, racing the other way for a touchdown that pulled the Gamecocks to 38-37 with just under 13 minutes remaining. All that was needed was the extra point, a mere formality, right?

Wrong. DeAngelo Tyson reached up to swat away Lanning’s kick, keeping Georgia ahead. It was the only thing that went wrong for the South Carolina kicker, who connected on field goals of 21, 39, 22, 35 and 34 yards.

“He gave an effort when a lot of guys don’t want to give effort,” Richt said of Tyson. “They’ll say, ‘I can’t get it. Why try hard?’ But he tried hard and blocked it.”

When Georgia’s Blair Walsh knocked through his second field goal, a 42-yarder with 6:20 remaining, South Carolina needed a touchdown to pull it out. Garcia led the Gamecocks down the field, converting three straight times on third down.

But he couldn’t complete the comeback.

“It’s a heartbreaking loss,” Lanning said.

Georgia had 12 players on the field for the final play. No wonder they were able to stop USC.

I love the Dawgs win or lose but something is definitely missing. Chemistry is not there and we have no sync. I was there last night and we found out #2 and #1 can play. We already knew Rennie was the heart and soul.

    1. Our D never disguises it's coverage. That is why SC came to the line early with 20 seconds or more to see what we were set in..and rarely had to audible. We have too much talent to be giving up so many points. On the flipside, we did fumble the ball on the 8 yard line, pick 6, and snap the ball out of the endzone. SC had their left slot area open for 3 quarters before we adjusted...I would say 70 percent of the plays to that side were for 5 yards or more.

    2. Loyalty is good for continuity of the staff but I think MR's loyalty to WM and MB is costing us games. We need to pound some teams more than we are. Bobo called a horrible game against OSU and last night was marginal. We never seem to get a rhythm or sync going with our team...I know execution is up to the players..but our hogs up front should be able to mash the other team more than what we are...even without Sturdivant. When we do throw on first down, it's into the flats...what's up with that? Is the QB's arm so weak we can't stretch the field some more...especially when AJ is on an island. When Joe stood there for 3 seconds and got the ball knocked out..he should have been coached to know to be stepping up in the pocket...undisplined penalties, ...(although the refs were nuts in both games), players bringing the ball out from 8 yards deep on kick returns and telling our kicker to kick it to the 5 when he could drill it deep.

I hope I am wrong but I think it's going to be a bad season for us...take the wins and hope things come together.

Let the Big Dawg Eat! No more cheesy end zone celebrations against Florida. Start acting like we expected to be there the whole time. I don't won't Richt to be Nick Satan but I do want him to be more like Urban Meyer - intense, intelligent, focussed, businesslike. Still, we are talking about the top coaches in the league and in the country. Go Houston!

I agree that the offensive play calling is too predictable. One example, Bobo brought Logan Gray in for one play. As a former collegiate defensive player, I am automatically think quarterback draw or a run play out of the shotgun. I didn't even have to gameplan for Georgia's offense and I saw that coming. Bobo tend's to make horrible calls like that which kills drives. If you can run the ball well between the tackles, which they did with Samuel, you stick to your strengths and force South Carolina to stop the inside run. Then, once the pull defenders up in the box, you use AJ Greens athleticism on deep play action passes over the top. While I think Mark Richt is a great coach and has turned Georgia football around (anyone remember the Ray Goff era), Mike Bobo needs to go. Georgia has too much talent at the skill positions to squander scoring oppurtunities. Further, Cox has enough talent around him that Georgia could have a good offense with the right playcalling. However, if Cox continues to make dumb decisions perhaps Logan Gray should be considered as an option.

I'm also not sure what all the aggression is toward Bobo when we scored 41 points against a typically stingy defense. There sure is a rush to throw a lot of people under the bus after a victory. Obviously we can and must improve but finally the offense has had success and the defense is capable if it wants to stop someone

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is that two years ago when UGA won their last 6 six games of the season including Florida, Auburn, and Hawaii they lost this game vs South Carolina at home the second game of the season. They didn't give up 37 points but still I'm always glad to get this game behind us cause it's always a nail biter. We'll get better, now if only offense and defense could play during the same game that would be nice.

Great game Dawgs.........sure wish my Gamecox had come out with a "W" but we just did not have the extra push needed. I think that has got to be the most exciting game I have seen between our two schools in quite a long time. Thank you Garcia for some smart QB'ing when it comes to route/throwing.

Now, that game had a lot of "oops" on each side of the ball for each team but I can definitely see where they have improved from last weeks games.

I am not here to whine. Just stating facts. I am glad Georgia won; however the latest AP poll shows Georgia dropping from number 21 to 23 in the ranking and they won the game. What does that tell you? So nobody is here whining. There is something wrong with Georgia.

Are yall kidding me? talkin about gettin rid of Richt!!! He's had 10 wins in every season he's been at Ga.! Ga. could have easily just died with the way they started the game, but i was impressed how they fought back. Although from watchin the game i did find some neg's 1. Cox he has to go, he managed the game well but once he started thinkin hey im pretty good, he throws a int. that everybody sees coming. Plus, they've got too much talent on the bench Logan Gray can scramble, and they have two 4 star freshman. 2. Martinez does need to go, becuz he has helped none with the pass rush and that is what made us vulnerable last year. I'm tired of ppl talkin about the Gators. Great job beating up Charlston Southern and Troy at home. At least UGA is tryin to preparing to getting better as the games get harder. I will take this win and a win against Florida over winning any other games this year!

i am tired of seeing people finding fault where they should be happy for a win ,yes there were mistakes made but no team no matter how good plays error free football against the quality of the sec teams defenses, and for those of you that second guess coach richt you can't have any idea how much pressure goes with that job to make the right decision 100% of the time [ impossible] so if you are not happy with what we have, and think you can do a better job[ big joke] then maybe you should change your loyalties to a northern team that plays prefect football [if you can find one] or shut up and keep your fault finding to yourself and be happy that we have the best damn conference in the country. sit back and enjoy the best football possible and stop the whining

Awsome game. Glad to see that Carolina has found a quarterback. Kudos to Garcia on coming in and not just filling Smelley's shoes, but throwing them in the garbage.

There are those who complain about GA coaching, but hey, if you can do better, they may be taking applications soon so feel free to step up....This was an excellent game on both sides and nothing should be taken away from either team by slamming criticisms. No, Cox is NOT a Green or a Stafford, but he has a big heart and he got the job done.

SEC Football at it's finest....grats to both USC and UGA for a great game!

I hope I am not coming across negative against Georgia, but I have to be honest here. There is real concern on my part that the coaching staff is the major problem. Both defense and offense play calling is very predictable. When Georgia allowed South Carolina to get back in the game it clearly showed one real problem, inconsistency. There is inconsistency at every level of Georgia's game. The quarterback and coaching stands out more than anything else. I believe the coaching problem is the lack of making correct adjustments in the game on both defense and offense. I see Georgia going 6-6 or 7-5 this season.
