No. 1 Florida beats Troy 56-6 in tuneup for Vols

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Before Florida coach Urban Meyer even started his postgame speech, his players had already said it all in the locker room.

“The season starts now,” receiver David Nelson said.

Indeed. The top-ranked Gators finished their “preseason” undefeated and unchallenged.

Now, it’s Tennessee time.

Tim Tebow threw four touchdown passes, ran for another score and Florida beat Troy 56-6 Saturday in its final tuneup before beginning Southeastern Conference play.

“We’re thinking about Tennessee right now,” linebacker Ryan Stamper conceded.

The Gators have won four in a row against the Volunteers, and Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin’s recruiting accusations in February and his promise to beat Florida has the Gators eager for this meeting. Even though they downplayed the matchup Saturday, it was a motivating factor during the offseason.

One of Kiffin’s quotes was plastered around the football complex.

“I’m really looking forward to embracing some of the great traditions at the University of Tennessee, for instance the Vol Walk, running through the T, singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year,” Kiffin said. “It will be a blast.”

Florida had all the fun the last two years, winning by a combined score of 89-26.

And although Meyer acknowledged in the spring that Kiffin’s comments fired him up, he vowed Saturday that next week’s game will not be about the coaches.

“There’s a bunch of great athletes on both sides of the ball,” Meyer said. “The thing we’ll never let happen around here is it’s about a coach or coaches. And I told those players that. This is about preparation and playing a game. That’s what it is. Period.”

Florida (2-0) looked plenty prepared Saturday and tied a school record with its 12th consecutive victory.

Although the Gators started slow—they punted twice and fumbled twice in the first five possessions—once Tebow & Co. got on track in the rain, the Trojans (0-2) looked nearly as overmatched as Charleston Southern did last week. Florida scored 28 unanswered points in a 7 1/2 -minute span in the second quarter to turn a close game into a rout.

Tebow completed 15 of 24 passes for 237 yards and equaled his career high with four TD passes. He also ran 13 times for 71 yards.

Jeff Demps ran for 87 yards and a touchdown. Chris Rainey added 85 yards on the ground and a score. Riley Cooper continued his strong start, catching five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, and blocking with such reckless abandon that his helmet flew off four times.

“I guess I’m the helmet cop, too,” Meyer said.

Deonte Thompson, who dropped a third-down pass early in the game and would-be TD pass in the opener, rebounded with a 33-yard touchdown reception. He injured his hamstring on the play, but should be fine for next week’s game.

Florida’s defense, upset about giving up 323 yards against Charleston Southern, allowed 139 to Troy. Getting a boost from the return of defensive end Jermaine Cunningham and cornerback Janoris Jenkins, the unit also recovered two fumbles and had an interception.

Cunningham and Jenkins were suspended for the opener. Cunningham forced a fumble early, and Jenkins had the interception midway through the second quarter.

“Defense is the name of the game today, and that defense was dominating,” Meyer said.

The biggest negative for Florida was six fumbles (three lost) on a sloppy day at The Swamp. Jonathan Phillips also missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter. His miss came a week after missing an extra point, and Meyer said the place-kicker job will be up for grabs this week.

Although the Trojans have had a penchant for playing big-time teams close, they hardly were a factor in Gainesville.

“We just close our eyes and pretend we never came here,” said coach Larry Blakeney, whose team nearly upset Ohio State and LSU last season. “But hopefully since we’ve seen the biggest, seen the best, we will learn from this experience.”

Florida got what it expected from its first two games: big yards, big points and few injuries.

Tebow also closed in on another record. His 4-yard TD run against Troy was the 45th of his career and tied him with former Auburn star Cadillac Williams for third on the SEC’s all-time list.

Tebow has LSU’s Kevin Faulk (46) and Georgia’s Herschel Walker (49) in his sights.

Tennessee, too.

“I’d be lying if I said there’s not a little something different when we play Tennessee or one of the rivals,” Tebow said. “That’s the great thing about it, about SEC play, too, is there’s something a little bit different.”

They forgot to add to the article that Tebow saved a family of 6 from a burning building, saved a little girls kitty from a tree, and helped 12 old ladies cross the street so they could play bingo all before he took the field and scored 5 touchdowns against Troy.

I doubt Kiffin really expected to win this year (although there is always that possibility). I do not think Kiffin really believed the Gators were in violation (he had just taken the test and did not report the incident to SEC or NCAA).

I think the comments Kiffin made were ill-advised if on a national level when speaking to Gators.

However, Kiffin was speaking to boosters and UT fans. Part of a Head Coach's job in college football is to get excitement about the program. There certainly is that this year and perhaps Kiffin will be able to take it and improve upon it.

I am a Gator fan and think UF will win. I am concerned that they fumbled *6* times!?!?! There is certainly plenty of room for improvement, especially on offense and play-calling.

Screw all you Gator haters out there. Deal with the reality now that the Gators are the team to beat week in and week out. The team doesn't make the schedule. The fact is for the last 5 years they have proven time after time that they can beat any team in the nation and they can get beat as well. Ole Miss last year, ruined what would have been an undefeated season. Hey it happens. Trust me,i wish we could play USC,Texas, and all these other so called badass, should be ranked # 1 teams. Should we win the SEC title this year? Absolutely! Should we win the BCS title? Absolutely! Will we win either the SEC or BCS title this year? Time will tell. So to all you haters,STFU and deal with it!!!!! GO GATORS!

I would love it if these posts only came from alumni of the shools not the wanna be's. So many of the new Gator fans jumped from the sinking Miami and FSU ships and will do the same when UF starts to stumble as the all do.
Same with the rest ofyou haters out there. If you didn't go to the school Shut up you don't have a right to open your yaps.
My first year at UF was the '79 0-10-1 year. So now I say
GO Gators We have earned it.

And as for the schedule....this schedule was made YEARS in advance....it just happened to come the year AFTER Florida won the national title...NOBODY was sitting there saying...'the Gators deserve a break for part of this season'....and if Florida lost 2-3 games last year and weren't the defending champs..nobody would give a $h!t about their schedule...so get off of it already. Let's see ANYBODY...ANY TEAM... including usc...go through last years' Gator schedule and come out unharmed.....we beat VERY GOOD teams to get there...Miami...@ Tennessee..LSU..Georgia..@ Florida State..Alabama (who was #1 at the time)..and Oklahoma......so get off of their schedule already.

After watching last nights' game...I think that Florida can beat usc if they played...we are just as physical as usc..or as physical as OSU was for MOST of the game...and this isn't going by the scores of the first 2 Florida games..I know they played scrubs..so what?!? We still have basically the same team from last year..minus Percy Harvin...when we take it to tennessee, lsu, and HOPEFULLY bama in the SEC championship game..people will stop crying about how the gators don't deserve to be there...and how ARROGANT can a team..and their coaching staff be when carroll says that EVERY game is a championship game............................for the team they're playing that day... whatever......bring on usc.......I really do hope we play them.

Post 8-2, yeah the SEC is overrated, they have only won the National Championship 5 of the last 10 years. Schedules are created years in advance. I'm pretty certain Florida played Miami in the first few weeks of the season recently...oh wait is was last year and people complained we ran up the score on them. Who did we play before that, Hawaii...yeah they were a team that went 12-1 the year before. What was the final when we played them in the first game of the year? 56-10 you dang gator haters.

Post 69. I have no qualms with the Gators being national champs. I just wish they would stop ducking teams outside of their conference and stop playing for all intensive purposes JUCO level teams when compared with their SEC opponents. Do you really take pleasure in watching them play Troy or Southern whatever and later Florida International? Their non conference schedule is weak to say the least and it is truly hard to consider the SEC tough when most of the teams in the SEC schedule weak non conference opponents. TN. scheduled UCLA and they lost today, but you do know that's the exception and not the rule. I have the same problem with Big 12 teams as well and like you I am in Big 12 country (OK).

Do you have any pull with Urban? If so, see if you can get him to answer Pete's call and schedule the other Trojans, instead. Pete has been waiting for the call back!

Dewey you sound like an idiot. i never complained at all. i said you cry babies should be happy we have a weak schedule because we wont be repeating if we lose one game(thats not complaining its just a observation). learn how to read the context. in 2006 we had the #1 toughest schedule, they didnt plan that. it just happens. just like this year the SEC happens to be in a down year. they didnt plan that either.

SEC is overrated. Georgia lost to Oklahoma State last week and Oklahoma State lost to Houston today. UCLA beat Tennessee in Knoxville. USC should move up to the top spot after beating OSU in Columbus with a freshman quarterback and he will get better as the season progresses.
