Huskies stop skid at 15 with 42-23 win

SEATTLE (AP)—Washington ended the nation’s longest losing streak at 15 games and gave new coach Steve Sarkisian his first victory, beating Idaho 42-23 on Saturday.

Using his arm far more than his feet, Huskies quarterback Jake Locker was 17 of 25 for 253 yards and three touchdowns.

Sarkisian’s first win came as Washington (1-1) scored touchdowns on its first five possessions—minus a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half—making up for a Huskies defense that Idaho (1-1) showed continues to be leaky against the pass.

Locker tossed touchdowns of 24, 31 and 4 yards and added a 3-yard TD run of his own as Washington picked up its first victory since Nov. 17, 2007 when it beat California.

It’s been nearly two calendar years of misery for the Huskies. A spark came from last week’s game effort against LSU, a 31-23 loss to the Tigers that raised the hopes of Washington fans who became disenchanted during the forgettable 0-12 effort a year ago.

The 15-game losing streak matched the longest skid in conference history, joining Oregon State (1990-91 and 1995-96). For Locker, it was his first victory since Nov. 3, 2007 at Stanford, having missed the Huskies win two weeks later against California with an injury.

But Washington’s defense showed it still has a long way to go in defending the pass, especially with USC coming to town next week. Defensive coordinator Nick Holt was so frustrated, he was regularly screaming, punching the air and walking all the way out to the numbers to yell at his defense.

Quarterback Nathan Enderle threw for 279 yards—part of the 349 total passing yards by the Vandals. But Idaho had to settle for field goals of 44, 28 and 34 yards by Trey Farquhar on three trips inside the Washington 20 in the first half.

“We moved the football pretty well and we’d get down to the red zone and kind of stall ourselves and didn’t capitalize,” Enderle said. “We could have had 12 more points in the first half alone if we would have just scored touchdowns and that’s a huge swing.”

Enderle then made his one crucial mistake on the first possession of the second half.

After Washington’s Curtis Shaw fumbled the second half kickoff and Idaho recovered, Enderle faced a third-and-4 at the Washington 25. Throwing toward the near sideline, Enderle’s pass found the hands of linebacker Mason Foster, who returned the turnover 56 yards to the Idaho 21. Four plays later, and after Locker hit D’Andre Goodwin for 20 yards to the 1 on third down, Chris Polk plowed in for his first touchdown of the season.

Idaho went three-and-out on its next possession and Locker needed just two plays to make it 35-9 on his 2-yard TD pass to Chris Izbicki.

The Vandals ended up out-gaining Washington 412 to 374, but were hampered by eight penalties and an inability to get Washington off the field. The Huskies were 11 of 14 on third down.

For the second straight week, Locker looked just as comfortable throwing as he had in the past instantly taking off on the run when nothing developed. His best play came on Washington’s opening drive when on third-and-14 Locker scrambled away from three potential sacks and fired a 35-yard completion to Goodwin inside the Idaho 10 setting up his TD run.

Locker was 6-for-6 on the Huskies next drive, capped by a perfect screen pass to Johri Fogerson for a 24-yard score. Locker capped his stellar first half getting Idaho’s safeties to bite on a play-action fake and finding James Johnson on a 31-yard TD pass.

Fogerson added a 2-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Idaho’s touchdowns came on runs of 4 and 6 yards by De’Maundray Woolridge, the second score coming with 13 seconds left.

Job ????? i use big words ????? where ?????? i INTENTIONALLY dumb my posts down so morons such as yourself can at least have a chance at grasping their intent. by me saying USCs offense is not that good and that Washingtons is ..... is in NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM contradictory. your OPINION is that im wrong ..... but your opinion is not fact and my opinion fiction. a contradictory statement conflicts with itself. how the hell is it not possible for Washington to have a good offense if USC doesnt ????? how the hell is it possible for USC to have a bad offense if Washington doesnt ??? the two have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with one another, they are completely separate entities (ooooh, sorry .... big word .... look it up loser). USCs offense and Washingtons offense are not related, and the performance of one does not effect the other. there is no contradiction in my statement that Washington has a good offense and USC doesnt.

since im schooling your dumb ass in English ..... ive got another comment on your writing ... "cant u not see the irony". cant you NOT see the irony ?????? can not you not ?????? lol. you know "cant" is a contraction for "can not" .... right ????? can not you not ??? haha. yes ..... everybody also has a friend who tries to critique others use of language when they cant use the language themselves. that would be U ...... lol. U ...... weird .... all this time i thought "you" was a three letter word.

everything u say is just nonsense psycho babble dude. by saying USC has a garbage offense and the huskies have a good one which isnt the truth ud be contradicting any other statement u made. cant u not see the irony in it for real. enough of ur trying to sound intelligent cause u dont. growing up everyone had a friend they knew who tried to use big words and sound smart but actually sounded like a fool. ya thats u..

I want the huskies to beat USC. besides LSU the huskies are my team, but ur being delusional if u think its gonna happen. LSU isnt that good and idado is pitiful. Locker is a stud i agree but theres no other part of that team that is above decent.

u should try to be more honest with yourself even when its ur team ur watching i always am honest with what i see.

Job ...... well, guess what ? that same freshman's THIRD game will be against the Huskies. yes, i went to Washington .... grad school .... but other than those years at school ive lived my whole life in Los Angeles. i watched the USC vs. SJSU game and i watched the USC game last night. Barkley might be a good QB one day, but that day is not today. how the hell is saying Washington has a good offense and USCs isnt as good being contradicting ?????? YOURE giving UW grads a bad name by improperly using the word contradicting. thats an opinionated comparison, nothing contradicting about it. now ..... if i said .... Washington has a great offense, but they cant seem to score .... one could argue THAT ..... is a contradiction.

USC is not that good this year .... the team i saw playing OSU last night was not like any USC team ive seen since 2001. still a good team, no doubt ...... but i am going on record right now and saying they will NOT win the Pac 10 this season, and will be lucky if they only lose two games, im thinking three is more realistic.

1st off as long as we arnt playing LSU which im an alum, ive been a huskie fan my whole life and still live in the area. that being said huskies played alot better than the score against my LSU and if it wasnt for many easily caught but dropped balls by the recievers the huskies might very well be 2-0, but they arnt. USC isnt LSU and the huskies D is pitiful. it will be a blow out. USC is to big and to fast. dont get me wrong its a division game so the huskies will keep it close till about mid 3rd quarter when the superior USC team will have warn the huskies down and itll turn into a blow out.

Weston. Get a life. I am not sure, but you don't claim a team, you are obviously mad about something. Why would anyone Dog on a team that had not one a game since 2007? Maybe you are scared. Most likely a UCLA or USC fan. Maybe you don't have anything better to do that make vague rants! I would say that you are from Oregon....................... Why would you care enough to post unless you were scared? Washington will be back sooner than later. Not this year.... I know that. Whomever you like as far as College Football goes is fine. At least back up your rant and why you are bitter about what you are saying. Donkey!

Lind .... we are a LONG way away from the "purple reign" days. that phrase was used in reference to the defense, back when Washington had one of the most feared defenses in the country. their defense is without question their weakness right now. i think the 2nd string defense on the 91 team was better than the 1st string on this squad. still better than last year ..... at least theyre TRYING this season. our offense is much better than i expected, and our defense is at the bare ass minimum a year away, but more than likely at least two years away.

Miro ...... and Penn St destroyed Oregon St who beat USC ....... remind me ...... how did that USC vs. Penn St match up in the Rose Bowl play out ????? using your incredibly simple logic i guess Penn St thoroughly dismantled USC ..... right? just because one team has success doing something against a team doesnt mean another team is going to. its not as simple as ..... so and so threw for 200 against a great defense and so and so from a bad team threw for 600 yards against a so and so team ... therefore so and so is going to tear so and so apart. YAWN ...... teach you debating skills in the 4th grade or something ?

be sure to stop by and kiss my ass after Washington beats USC .... ya hear ?

miro ..... if you look back to my original post, and previous posts i have made ...... i have continually made reference to our pass defense being a major weakness. i dont have any delusions that the Huskies have a better defense than the Buckeyes ..... but i also dont have any delusions that the Buckeyes have a better offense. The Huskies offense has been much more effective than the Buckeyes. last week when they played big bad LSU, they outpassed LSU, outrushed LSU, had more first downs than LSU, punted less than LSU, had better success on 3rd down conversions. i watched the Bucks offense last week and they looked much like they did tonight. everybody said i was a lunatic when i PREACHED that anybody who took LSU and the 17 points was an idiot. i said at the very worst, the Huskies were going to play them tough, and they did more than that. as long as people like yourself keep thinking the 2008 Huskies are going to come running out of that tunnel, people are going to be surprised by the score of games involving Washington. this is a MUCH better team than last season, if you think USC is going to walk into Husky Stadium, check in at the desk .... pick up their W and go home ..... you are in for one long evening next week. the Huskies can move the ball and they are going to be at home ..... and if Barkley thought the Horseshoe was loud ..... boy is he in for a shock when he enters Husky Stadium. theyve absolutely got a shot at wining that football game. id still give the edge to USC ..... but 34 points at Husky Stadium ????? lol ..... yeah ..... right.

Mr. Dawgmeat...Here I am again! Realistically, the point spread should be USC favored by 24 over UW.
FACT: The crappy USC quarterback still threw for 200 yards against an excellent Ohio State defense...and the Idaho Vandals QB, threw for almost double that against UW's defense coached by "Awesome" Nick Holt. What's up with that? I will tell you. UW has no talent in the secondary and D-line. They can't tackle in space and can't cover 1 on 1.

USC will dominate "time of possession" and the Husky offense just wont have a much of an opportunity to get things going. The Husky crowd will be taken out of the game early one...I know you're scared and it's OK to be. Jake Locker will have to run, run, run.... Steve Sarkisian and Nick Holt are scared too....they will be playing to merely not get embarrassed by their former team...

    Dear Dawgmeat...

The Ohio State / SC was supposed to be a good game, and it was. But they both play at a higher level than UW. UW simply has too many holes on defense...I admit, USC had an ugly victory against Ohio State, but remember, those two teams are excellent, and like I said it was supposed to be a good game. UW is no Ohio State defensively, not even close.... UW cannot tackle in space and the outside thirds of the field are open game for any team that faces the Dogs. UW's cornerbacks and safety's suck and we all know this... and that @#$%y USC QB is going to have a field day against the Huskies. How can you say Dogs are going to pound SC? Pound? Really? . Even with NIck Holt as their leader, UW gave up nearly 500 friggin yards to a friggin' Junior College team. Get real. I would love to see UW win...and if they do...they will make a friggin Walt Disney motion picture about the Huskies!

excellent ....... USC pulled it off. now we get to blemish their record. Ohio St has got to be the biggest choke artists in the country. they did the SAME thing against Texas last season. outplayed Texas for 58 minutes ..... then bent over and gave Texas the game. i see in Ohio St the same thing i saw in the Pileofsh*tingham era ...... they are a team that does not believe they can win.

USC big bad offense cant even score. the ride is over Trojan fans ....... USCs dominance in the Pac 10 ends this season. they cant even score. their only TD of the game was a FOUR play TWO yard drive. this team looks like garbage. NOTHING like Trojans teams of recent memory. Washington is going to pound this team.

Miro ????? have you been watching the USC game tonight ????? their offense is pure garbage. ill take Washington ..... give you 34 points ..... and give you 5 to 1 on your money. their defense isnt all that impressive either. Locker will tear that defense to pieces. i thought Washington beating USC was a long shot going into today ..... but after seeing USCs offense under Barkley ..... im feeling MUCH better about our chances. Washington is going to give USC something they havent had since 2001 .... a losing record.

ps - if you seriously think Vegas is going to set the spread anywhere CLOSE to 34 points, than you have absolutely NO clue about gambling. Washingtons offense has looked damned good in both games so far, the game is at home ...... USC wont be favored by 15, let alone 34.
