LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP)—Jeff Fleming completed 8 of 20 passes and ran for two touchdowns as New Mexico State beat Prairie View A&M 21-18.

The New Mexico State (1-1) win marked the first victory in the DeWayne Walker era. The former UCLA defensive coordinator took over the reins this winter after the school fired former head coach Hal Mumme.

Aggies running back Seth Smith finished with 157 yards on 25 carries. Smith went over the century mark on his 14th carry of the game during New Mexico State’s second-quarter scoring drive, a possession topped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Fleming.

Prairie View (1-1) inched back into the game late. Down 21-3, the team had a 9-yard scoring run from quarterback K.J. Black as well as a 27-yard touchdown toss from Black to wide receiver Anthony Weeden. The two-point conversion cut the Aggies’ lead down to three, but they could not score again.
