MADISON, Wis. (AP)—Wisconsin safety Chris Maragos came up with an interception in the second overtime, and Philip Welch kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Badgers a 34-31 victory over Fresno State at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

It was an ideal end to a rough week for Wisconsin, which was able to field its starters despite an outbreak of flulike symptoms that spread through the team.

Badgers coach Bret Bielema said after the game that more than 40 players were sick as recently as Tuesday. Cornerback Aaron Henry was throwing up when he woke up Saturday morning, and was taken out of the game after some shaky plays early on.

Scott Tolzien threw a 6-yard touchdown to Nick Toon to take the lead on the Badgers’ first overtime possession. But Fresno State quarterback Ryan Colburn hit Seyi Ajirotutu in the back of the end zone to force a second overtime.

Maragos then picked off Colburn in the end zone, and the Badgers drove for the decisive field goal.

It was the second big play in as many weeks for Maragos, who broke up a pass on fourth-and-3 to preserve the Badgers’ shaky 28-20 victory over Northern Illinois last Saturday.

John Clay’s 72-yard touchdown run gave Wisconsin a 24-21 lead with 5:45 remaining in regulation. But Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling—who missed a 45-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter and missed three field goals in a loss to Wisconsin last year—hit a game-tying 40-yarder with 20 seconds left.

Clay finished the game with 143 yards rushing. But before his big run, Fresno State was in control.

Leading 21-17 on three first-half touchdown throws by Colburn, the Bulldogs saw two third-quarter drives stall on interceptions. The Bulldogs put together another long drive early in the fourth quarter, but Goessling missed from 45.

Clay then took the ball through a big hole in the middle of the line and burst toward the right sideline for a touchdown to give Wisconsin its first lead of the game.

About the only thing that went right for the Badgers in the first half was the kick return ability of David Gilreath, but that was enough to keep them in the game.

Fresno State took a 14-0 lead on Colburn’s 13-yard slant to Chastin West and a perfect deep lob to Devon Wylie for a 70-yard touchdown.

Wisconsin answered with a long kickoff return by Gilreath that set up a drive for an 11-yard touchdown run by Zach Brown. Colburn then connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ajirotutu.

Gilreath broke free for a 38-yard kickoff return, then finished a drive with an 8-yard touchdown run on an end around to cut the lead to 21-14.

Welch hit a 57-yard field goal just before halftime after missing a 47-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter to make him 0-for-3 to start the season.

Yea Dan, we're cool. I still hate your asses for a few years ago for giving Bucky his lone loss of the year and possibly causing our program from getting the National Championship. I don't know if you recall but Wisconsin went 12-1-1 that year, only being tied by OSU by a couple late TD passes and you guys ripping the ball out of our hands 5 times that day causing our only defeat of the year, lol. That year, Bucky ended 5th in the country after beating UCLA in the rose bowl, but had it not been for your greedy defense we would have been the only undefeated team in the nation, lol.

I am a homer but i'm not an idiot. Qute frankly, if your coaches keep a reign on Farve from being stupid as he is occasionally apt to be, you have the makings of a really good team. As you might have seen in my NFL post, I don't have a high regard for EITHER of the teams contesting you.

I apoligize if it got personal. It wasn't meant to be. I give as much crap as I receive and there is nothing wrong with talking junk especially among rivals. Please accept my apology as I know I am a class individual.

Dan, I called you out because you are a loud mouthed obnoxious jerk. Typical of both Minnesota and Illinois fans where the school has to teach you the correct way of cheering. I AM a Wisconsin fan, however I also see the flaws in Bucky. I did not attack you in your side of the blog simply because that's not my style. You are indeed classless.

I think this is going to be a long season for the Badgers. The have two, very sloppy wins, over smaller, weaker teams.

I love the Badgers, but I don't think they will do anything this year. I'm eying Beliema suspiciously.

    Good Luck Badgers!!!!

Oh lets be afraid of the Golden Rodents (who has the Axe?)...

Minny barely beating Syracuse and getting just a TD on Air Force at home.

Badgers are scared. No really. (who has the axe FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS???)

Heartbreaking loss for Bulldogs and their fans.Building an early lead and then losing is nothing new for Coach Hill and his Bulldog teams In 2005 the Bulldogs suffered 2nd half meltdowns in each of five successive losses. Last season FSU was favored to win the WAC but finished 7-6. This season with games against Boise State, Cincinatti, Illinois and Nevada promises another mediocre season. If Wisconsin parts ways with their coach I know where they can find a mustacheoed, colorful coach with NFL experience.

You haven't been a Gopher fan long, I'm sure. I had season tickets there from 1999-2004. The Gopher fans were awful. The University had to hand out newspapers with information on how to cheer properly. Tickets were $4 a piece and they still couldn't sell out. The number of heartbreaking losses in the last 5 minutes for that team was unbelievable.
The new stadium is great, but don't think a building will change Minnesotan's mindset. One loss and they'll look for Viking tickets.
TCF Bank stadium looks like an amazing place for a new alumni center.

Bill - didn't we just chat in the other blog? Why you calling me out? You aren't even a wisconSIN fan! Pretty simple, Badger "D" is atrocious and they have barely beaten some medicore teams at home.

Michael - TCF Stadium will be one of the best home field advantages in the conference, you will see.

I hope Badger fans wait to buy their tickets for the game in Minnesota. Air Force and Cal should cut the prices in half. Thanks for building Camp Randall West.

Fresno had a shot to win last year and choked... they again could have won but choked again. But still glad to see the QB situation is good. Colburn made one mistake in the game, the first INT. The 2nd INT was tipped... and last INT was a bad play. Dogs have a great rushing offense... but Pat Hill
didnt play Harding and Miller much... thats uncharacteristic. But Ryan Mathews is a stud... i predict him to be a second round pick... IF he stays healthy. Go Dogs! Boise St game next week. Dogs will pull it off at home!!!!

A couple more points, a comment and an apology.

I watched Clay all through Highschool and I KNEW when he hit the secondary he was gone on his long run. It's pretty amazing that a kid his size can out run the secondary. I'm not sure how many of you know this, but he was quite a monster at linebacker when he was in high school as well. My daughter's fiance played tight end against him and he was fortunate enough to play when he was somewhat injured. Even still, he says the guy is one helluva football player.

Secondly, regarding Dan. One can't take what he says too seriously since he IS from Minnesota and clearly has biased opinions in his posts. I tend to for the most part ignore him since he speaks with his heart rather than his head. All he does for me is make me despise his Guppers, his ViQueens and Twinkies all the more. Actually I respect the Twins organization but not Dan, lol.

Finally, I re-read my comments and noticed my own typos so no need to bring them up, lol. Sorry.

I agree with both Richard and Edward. Fresnos State IS a good team, however the Badger "D" leaves a LOT to the imagination. I'm not convinced it's as mush the athletes as it is the coaching staff. On the play where FS made it 21-7 the coner was SO out of it the ONLY way to NOT get a touchdown if if thier qaurterback made a terrible throw, but I won't dwell on that. What I WILL dwell on is Bucky has FS at thier own 1 yard line, then on third and 6 from thier 5, where are our corners lined up? 10 Yards off the line of scrimmage, then back pedaling. You might as well concede the first down to allow them to move the ball downfield.

Then with just a couple minutes left, Wisconsin can salt the game in regulation with a 1st down but nooooooooooo, we're just gonna run the ball hoping to kill clock, which provides FS with the ball, 3 down on thier own 40, a minute and a half left AND a time out. Not inconcievable that they could move to FG range from there and ESPECIALLY when they have 9 to go for a first, we have 3 guys on the line and our backers are ten yards off then line, letting them run for 14 and a 1st down. We escaped. We got lucky and I firmly believe Wisconsin will continue to fall in thier program until a quality coaching staff gets involved. Not sure if the blame is on the head coach, the coordinator or position coaches, but I had hopes the secondary, being young last year, would show improvement with the extra seasoning. It clearly has not happened.
