MADISON, Wis. (AP)—Wisconsin safety Chris Maragos came up with an interception in the second overtime, and Philip Welch kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Badgers a 34-31 victory over Fresno State at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.
It was an ideal end to a rough week for Wisconsin, which was able to field its starters despite an outbreak of flulike symptoms that spread through the team.
Badgers coach Bret Bielema said after the game that more than 40 players were sick as recently as Tuesday. Cornerback Aaron Henry was throwing up when he woke up Saturday morning, and was taken out of the game after some shaky plays early on.
Scott Tolzien threw a 6-yard touchdown to Nick Toon to take the lead on the Badgers’ first overtime possession. But Fresno State quarterback Ryan Colburn hit Seyi Ajirotutu in the back of the end zone to force a second overtime.
Maragos then picked off Colburn in the end zone, and the Badgers drove for the decisive field goal.
It was the second big play in as many weeks for Maragos, who broke up a pass on fourth-and-3 to preserve the Badgers’ shaky 28-20 victory over Northern Illinois last Saturday.
John Clay’s 72-yard touchdown run gave Wisconsin a 24-21 lead with 5:45 remaining in regulation. But Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling—who missed a 45-yarder earlier in the fourth quarter and missed three field goals in a loss to Wisconsin last year—hit a game-tying 40-yarder with 20 seconds left.
Clay finished the game with 143 yards rushing. But before his big run, Fresno State was in control.
Leading 21-17 on three first-half touchdown throws by Colburn, the Bulldogs saw two third-quarter drives stall on interceptions. The Bulldogs put together another long drive early in the fourth quarter, but Goessling missed from 45.
Clay then took the ball through a big hole in the middle of the line and burst toward the right sideline for a touchdown to give Wisconsin its first lead of the game.
About the only thing that went right for the Badgers in the first half was the kick return ability of David Gilreath, but that was enough to keep them in the game.
Fresno State took a 14-0 lead on Colburn’s 13-yard slant to Chastin West and a perfect deep lob to Devon Wylie for a 70-yard touchdown.
Wisconsin answered with a long kickoff return by Gilreath that set up a drive for an 11-yard touchdown run by Zach Brown. Colburn then connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ajirotutu.
Gilreath broke free for a 38-yard kickoff return, then finished a drive with an 8-yard touchdown run on an end around to cut the lead to 21-14.
Welch hit a 57-yard field goal just before halftime after missing a 47-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter to make him 0-for-3 to start the season.

i was at that game. i was also at the game a couple years back when the badgers blocked the punt and recovered it in the end zone. Worst game I've been to.

I am a homer but i'm not an idiot. Qute frankly, if your coaches keep a reign on Farve from being stupid as he is occasionally apt to be, you have the makings of a really good team. As you might have seen in my NFL post, I don't have a high regard for EITHER of the teams contesting you.

I apoligize if it got personal. It wasn't meant to be. I give as much crap as I receive and there is nothing wrong with talking junk especially among rivals. Please accept my apology as I know I am a class individual.

Sounds like you take these BLOGS a little personally, I have plenty of class, but no room for loudmouth UW fans. Not saying YOU are, but plenty of them who troll Minn sites. Just representing like any real fan would do.
"loud mouthed obnoxious jerk" - LOL wow
"Minnesota and Illinois fans where the school has to teach you the correct way of cheering" - ignorant

I love the Badgers, but I don't think they will do anything this year. I'm eying Beliema suspiciously.

The new stadium is great, but don't think a building will change Minnesotan's mindset. One loss and they'll look for Viking tickets.
TCF Bank stadium looks like an amazing place for a new alumni center.

Michael - TCF Stadium will be one of the best home field advantages in the conference, you will see.

I watched Clay all through Highschool and I KNEW when he hit the secondary he was gone on his long run. It's pretty amazing that a kid his size can out run the secondary. I'm not sure how many of you know this, but he was quite a monster at linebacker when he was in high school as well. My daughter's fiance played tight end against him and he was fortunate enough to play when he was somewhat injured. Even still, he says the guy is one helluva football player.
Secondly, regarding Dan. One can't take what he says too seriously since he IS from Minnesota and clearly has biased opinions in his posts. I tend to for the most part ignore him since he speaks with his heart rather than his head. All he does for me is make me despise his Guppers, his ViQueens and Twinkies all the more. Actually I respect the Twins organization but not Dan, lol.
Finally, I re-read my comments and noticed my own typos so no need to bring them up, lol. Sorry.

Then with just a couple minutes left, Wisconsin can salt the game in regulation with a 1st down but nooooooooooo, we're just gonna run the ball hoping to kill clock, which provides FS with the ball, 3 down on thier own 40, a minute and a half left AND a time out. Not inconcievable that they could move to FG range from there and ESPECIALLY when they have 9 to go for a first, we have 3 guys on the line and our backers are ten yards off then line, letting them run for 14 and a 1st down. We escaped. We got lucky and I firmly believe Wisconsin will continue to fall in thier program until a quality coaching staff gets involved. Not sure if the blame is on the head coach, the coordinator or position coaches, but I had hopes the secondary, being young last year, would show improvement with the extra seasoning. It clearly has not happened.
