Central Michigan stuns Michigan State 29-27

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)—Andrew Aguila’s toughest kick of the day? It wasn’t the one that sailed through the uprights with 3 seconds to go, the game-winner that will be talked about for a long time at Central Michigan.

No, it was the onsides kick that gave the Chippewas the ball and a chance to win—a chance they cashed in when Aguila made a 42-yarder to stun Michigan State 29-27 on Saturday in a wild, come-from-behind game oddsmakers had figured the Spartans would win by two touchdowns.

“The onside was the biggest kick. The field goal is going to be remembered, but the onside was executed perfectly,” Aguila said.

No one would disagree. And Central Michigan has a marquee victory, though it was a nail-biter until the end.

Chippewa quarterback Dan LeFevour, who became the Mid-American Conference’s all-time leader in total offense during the game, threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Paris Cotton with 32 seconds left to pull his team within 27-26. Central Michigan went for the win, but the 2-point conversion pass attempt was caught out of bounds.

That’s OK. Bring on Aguila, whose kickoff bounded over the Michigan State line and into the arms of streaking wide receiver Bryan Anderson.

The Chippewas (1-1) drove into position for a 47-yard field goal. Aguila missed it, but Michigan State (1-1) was whistled for an offsides penalty, giving Aguila another shot from 42—and he nailed it.

“I can’t say enough about Andrew Aguila,” Central Michigan coach Butch Jones said. “That last-second field goal seemed like an eternity. I think it took about 20 minutes to make a 5-second kick.”

When time expired, Central’s players ran in all different directions, some piling on each other and others heading toward the maroon-and-gold section in one corner of the stadium. One player waved an oversized “C” flag as the Spartan faithful streamed out of the stadium.

The win was Central’s second straight over a Big Ten opponent and fourth all-time against the conference. It also snapped the program’s four-game losing streak to the Spartans.

“Even after the onside kick, we still had a chance,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. “All we had to do was not jump offside.

“But there are no excuses here. We got beat today. They were better than us.”

LeFevour finished 33 of 46 for 328 yards with three TDs and an interception a week after an ineffective outing at Arizona.

“My pride was hurt … a little bit,” he said. “I felt like (the 19-6 loss) was my fault, and I didn’t want to feel that way this week.”

The suburban Chicago native surpassed Byron Leftwich’s record of 12,084 yards on a 12-yard TD pass to Kito Poblah that tied the game 20-20 less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Leftwich, of Marshall, now is the starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. LeFevour, a senior, has compiled 12,166 yards of total offense.

Michigan State took a 27-20 lead on a 7-yard pass from Kirk Cousins to B.J. Cunningham with 7:33 remaining.

Cousins, who was 13 of 18 for 164 yards and the one TD, started and played the majority of the game. Fellow sophomore Keith Nichol completed 3 of 8 passes for 51 yards and a score.

Michigan State led 17-13 at halftime, thanks to a 16-yard pass from Nichol to Charlie Gantt that the tight end caught while falling down in the end zone with 4 minutes to go in the second quarter.

Brown did a little bit of everything on Saturday for Central Michigan, catching passes and returning punts and kicks. He threw a 24-yard pass to LeFevour and ran twice from scrimmage. He finished with 248 all-purpose yards.

Brown’s fellow receiver, Anderson, not only recovered the onside kick, he extended his streak of consecutive games played with a reception to 42, the nation’s longest active streak. He finished with six catches for 120 yards.

Michigan State’s Blair White followed up his nine-catch, 162-yard performance in a season-opening win over Montana State with seven grabs for 105 yards. But he was upset with himself for letting the onside kick get past him.

“They got a great bounce on a great kick,” he said. “I misplayed it, and it took a big bounce over my head. I just misjudged it.”

Being a Michigan State grad, and life-long fan, State fans put up with much more abuse, and torment. A State fan is a much harder thing to be than a fan of any other team in Michigan (Lions included). You're completely outnumbered, and your tormentors are in very close proximity at all times. Sure, I'm sure the Michigan fans, when that had that ONE down year last year heard it a little from State fans, but, when something bad happens to MSU, I hear it from a herd of people. So I will never buy this idea that we're "not one of U of M's rivals."

To put things in perspective, I tried to organize a Michigan/Michigan State fan touch football game last year. It didn't happen, because when I finally looked at how my friends split up, I had about 40 U of M Fans and 3 State fans.

I watched that game early Saturday. Though I'm not a fan of either team, the game was actually very exciting to watch. Fantastic finish.

Hey Sparty you can talk the talk but can't walk the walk. You taunted us all last year and now its your turn and you crybabies can't take it. Suck it up and quit being like OSU fans. I will say that you are better losers than OSU fans who can be sore winners and losers. Yes I hope we take little brother to the cleaners this year, but I will say this...... I will be rooting for sparty against OSU and PSU.

LOL oh yeah.... if you graduated from University of Texas , then obviously know that Texas is listed in the Top Ten party schools in the nation.

To the "lovely lady," I actually attended and graduated from the University of Texas. I have enjoyed going to the occasional house parties, and to the bars of east lansing. They have alot of fine establishments for all the local binge drinkers that populate the area. Luckily for your educational reputation there are the few "scholars" that make you feel good about yourself. While I hear Michigan's making big medical advances, putting people in space, and a man in the Presidential office.. MSU is working on how to better milk a cow and performing a better keg stand. Congratualations. I'll stick with my school while State lives for last year, and UofM puts their own fans down.

From an actual born and raised Texan (and graduate), not a refugee from MI now living in Texas.

As a State fan, I have to agree with #82. It's all in good fun. In fact, it says more about the person based on the way they react when their favorite team gets slammed, than it does about the team.

A lot of you state fans are acting like you say Michigan fans act. You guys enjoyed it and gave us all kinds of crap for our losses to the little schools. Now you guys lose and you play the "leave us alone approach". and you just bring up our past, we have got the abuse, now its your turn, so SHUT UP and take it, that is what rivalries are all about. Do you think that we won't say anything? Jan A is acting just like we Michigan fans SUPPOSEDLY act like, If you could only root for the school if you went there or went to college then the stadiums would be empty!!!! That is a stupid comment! GO BLUE!!!!!!!!

To the "gentleman" that is a Texas fan, however makes nasty comments about MSU, did you even go to college? To everyone else, Michigan State University is an outstanding university. We have more Rhodes Scholars than Michigan, and we excel in many areas where Michigan falls short, however those accolades goes both ways. It is a very small, ignorant person that continues to knock MSU, particularly if they have never attended college. Central Michigan University - congratulations!!

    Re BMW:

Giving an fan of an opposing team some grief about their team losing is just fun. I do it to my friends--they'll likely do it to me tomorrow. It's just all in good fun, and is nothing that should be taken very seriously. Mudslinging against your rivals doesn't mean you are anymore of a fan than a person who sits their quietly and enjoys their win.

CMU played very well yesterday, and the Spartans didn't react. However, I don't believe they played as well as they should have. They were playing yesterday's game as if it really was a preaseason game. They couldn't decide on a QB. They were running 4th string RB's in the 4th qtr. Their offensive play calling was a little bland. I don't think they'll walk into ND stadium next Saturday with the same problem.

OSU had similar fate. They played pretty well against USC defensively until the 4th qtr came. Their play calling offensively was lame. But it just goes to show that on any given Saturday a team can win if their desire is greater than the other's. Some facts remain. Yes the SEC is a great conference. So is the Big 12. USC is good and MSU lost. UM won. Point being, these are just temporary facts. Just remember that next weekend, perhaps that same fate might belong to your own school. Just be able to take what you guys might dish out, Spartan, Wolverine, Buckeye and college football fans alike.

Go State! Go Buckeyes! Enjoy the season everyone.

CMU04BSBA - Major difference between many UM fans vs. fans of other schools in this region of our country. There is ONLY one game that matters each weekend to most UM fans: The game that UM is playing. There is no consolation if any of there so called rivals lose. OSU, MSU, PSU, and other Big Ten scores are only mentioned in regard to first place in the Big Ten. Last season, as bad as the loss was to Toledo, you have to look at certain elements. Number 1: UM allowed Toledo's only touchdown of the game on a poor interception thrown by Sheridan while UM was inside the 10. Even a field goal without the interception and UM likely wins. Toledo did put up 54 points on Colorado, and even if they are bad defensively, 54 is a nice day! As far as MSU being a "great team," I would want to know your definition of great. Was last year's version of the Spartans a great team? I hope the Spartans finish the season with enough wins to go to a good bowl game, and if that is what you consider great, I understand. When Michigan won the first 11 games in 2006, it was considered a good season since they were not able to win the Big Ten. I think UM's spread offense will give MSU some problems in 3 weeks. Hopefully both teams will win until they play that game.

Spartan fans have no reason to be ashamed of this loss; afterall, CMU was favored to win the MAC this season. CMU has also gone to bowl games the previous three seasons as well. Now if you had lost to someone that went 3-9 last season like Michigan did to Toledo that would be far more embarrassing. Besides, there's history between MSU-CMU. In the early '90's CMU won back-to-back against MSU. Last year, CMU defeated Indiana so it's not like CMU hasn't experienced recent success versus the Big 10 prior to today.

I am just going to have to really just stop and say we'll see how the U of M, MSU game goes this year and if you lose again that means shut your mouth and wait until next year to open it that is if you can beat State.

I'm proud of my Chips. Great way to bounce back from a tough road loss to Arizona the week prior. Personally, I think MSU is more talented than CMU; however, I just think that the Chips wanted this game more. Dan LeFevour wanted a marquee victory against a top team and he got it with some help from a much improved defense. CMU only has 8 seniors on it so this team will be fun to watch the next couple of seasons. MSU is a great team and I think this loss will serve as motivation the remainder of the season. UM fans shouldn't talk trash b/c their first road game this season is at MSU. Might be tough for Forcier and the Wolverines to execute outside the confines of the Big House. If this game proves anything you give your opponent the benefit of the doubt b/c although they might not appear to have the talent you can never measure the size of their heart.

Im not a UofM or MSU fan. I'm actually a Texas fan whose lived in Michigan the past few years. I just liked how Michigan won and State got it handed to them. But the comment that your embarassed by the way some of your fellow fans are reacting to it, comes from that 1% of the fan base that no one listens too or cares about, and you must not be as big a fan as they claim. BTW Texas will stick it to any big 10 team... especially the buckeyes! ...But good job Blue, and State sucks. The End.
