No. 5 Cowboys fall 45-35 to Houston

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—Quarterback Case Keenum was listening in on a conversation in the Houston locker room before the game when someone suggested that the Cougars had worked hard enough that they didn’t need any luck to upset No. 5 Oklahoma State.

Keenum had to interject. He turned to running back Bryce Beall to say, “I wouldn’t mind some luck.”

Hours later, the two teamed up on a connection Cougars fans will remember for a long time. On fourth down, Beall went after a 6-yard pass from Keenum that got batted up into the air and came down with it for the go-ahead score in Houston’s 45-35 upset of Oklahoma State on Saturday.

“It’s football. If you keep playing, plays like that are going to happen,” Beall said. “Everything’s not going to come out perfect.”

The Cougars (2-0) took advantage of a series of favorable bounces to give second-year coach Kevin Sumlin his first marquee win with the program’s first victory over a Top 5 team since an upset of third-ranked Texas in 1984.

Jamal Robinson sealed the win with a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:14 remaining, also off a pass that tipped off an Oklahoma State player first.

“For us as a program, this is a big win because it legitimizes our university. It legitimizes our program,” said Sumlin, who had gone 5-0 against OSU as an assistant coach at Oklahoma. “There’s no doubt that one win does not make a season. We’ve got a whole bunch of football to go.

“But I think any time that you can go on the road and win and beat a Top 10 team, it really helps your confidence as a program and it helps your pride as a university.”

Oklahoma State (1-1) was coming off of perhaps the biggest opening win in the program’s history last week against Georgia, earning a spot on the cover of Sports Illustrated and a Top 5 ranking for the first time since 1985.

“We didn’t overlook them at all. We practiced like we practiced for Georgia and any other team,” said Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant, who had five catches for 85 yards. “We just made too many mistakes and they took advantage and made plays.”

After overcoming a 17-point halftime lead, the Cowboys squandered their final chances for a win.

Quarterback Zac Robinson fumbled a snap to end one OSU drive in the fourth quarter, then threw his only interception to end the next. He finished with 240 yards on 18 for 31 passing with one touchdown.

Bryant returned a punt for a touchdown against Houston for the second straight year as Oklahoma State reeled off 21 straight third-quarter points to surge ahead 28-21. It looked like a repeat of last year’s game, when Houston led 16-7 before OSU’s offense came alive for a 56-37 win.

“We bounced back from some big plays that they made. I think that may have been the difference in the teams from this year to last year,” Keenum said. “They came out and made some huge plays, but we responded this time— defensively and offensively.”

Sumlin said he thought the Cougars had more depth and leadership than a season ago. Oklahoma State also ran out of weapons.

Kendall Hunter, last year’s Big 12 rushing leader, didn’t play in the second half due to an apparent leg injury and Bryant also missed time. He lay sprawled out on the turf for a few moments after tipping the pass that led to Jamal Robinson’s return, suffering from cramps.

The Biletnikoff Award finalist also didn’t return for Oklahoma State’s last-ditch drive in the final minutes.

“Everybody’s been telling them how good they’ve been and how good they are, and now they get to see the other side of it,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said.

Keenum threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns, none bigger than the one that didn’t go to his intended receiver. Keenum was scrambling away from pressure when he fired the ball toward James Cleveland. Linebacker Donald Booker leaped to deflect the ball up in the air, and Beall was able to corral it.

“You can say it’s luck but when you’re working hard and working to get open and running full speed, that’s not luck,” Keenum said. “When you’re in position to make plays—no matter how they are—that’s not luck at all.”

Houston also got a break late in the first half when Matt Hogan’s line-drive kickoff smacked off Taylor Sokolosky and was covered up by the Cougars’ Tim Monroe. Houston capitalized when Carrier, who’s also a sprinter on the track team, took a screen pass from Keenum and raced in for a 32-yard score to make it 24-7 at halftime.

Carrier finished with seven receptions for 111 yards, and Beall added 78 yards on 18 carries. He had a 1-yard TD plunge on a fourth down with 13:40 to play that put Houston up 31-28 and provided an answer to Oklahoma State’s scoring surge.

This is one great win for the program and that is all. Its too early in the season to be screaming BCS for the coogs. The only way beating Okie St. will mean anything is if the coogs run the table. This is coming from an UH alum. By the way, the season is not over for Okie St. they just have to win conference games.

I will be Captain Ovious. All in all, the Big 12 lacks defense. Top ranked D last year was what 63rd out of 119 schools. Yes, the defenses were that low due to the offenses in the Big 12. The Big 12 has good QB's, but UH comes out of nowhere and hangs 45 on OSU, Bowling Green scares the Tiggers. Last year, OU putting up 40+ a game, until the Championship game. Northwesterns QB had career high passing yards last year in the Alamo Bowl while Chase Daniels had 200 yards. Your not safe either Texas, everyone talks about how the horns should of been in the Championship game, you had your hands full with Ohio State (which everyone talks about being overrated and weak) in your bowl game.

Dont get me wrong, I want someone besides USC and Florida having braging rights to anything, but lets talk about the elephant in the room. Gain some D for the talent on offense and there could be several teams in the Big 12 unstoppable.

Houston just beat Ok St. Yet, Ok St is still ranked higher? That has always been one of my main gripes with the ranking system. If I beat you, I should be ranked higher than you.

If the voters don't believe Houston should be ranked higher than 21, that is fine. However, Ok St should then be no higher than 22.

Cougars played a solid game. OState played well but had several sloppy plays and came up on the short end of the stick on several plays. Played over it would be another tight game but I think that OState would have prevailed. I mean like the on side kick hitting the OSU player bouncing back to UofH player. Like Dez deflecting the ball and the Coug back picking it off. Like the OState Defensive back deflecting the ball in the end zone on 4th and 6 and a receiver is able to catch the deflection. Any of those, and there are others, and Cougs would have lost a score and Ostate most likely would have scored. So...I am disappointed Ostate lost but that is the way football is. Cougs have a real good offense and I thought that they were tougher on defense than expected. Just a good football game. I hope that both the Cougars and Cowboys finish the rest of their season strong.

heh heh...I love getting the little school fans all fired up. It's just fun trashtalk and nothing personal. This is what makes Yahoo sports so much fun. I know of no other place where you can say just about anything and have so much fun with college football fans across the country. College ball is PASSION! So lighten up and have fun with it. If and when Texas ever loses again (hey, it could happen someday!) I expect and welcome the fun trashtalk right back at me.

Worst home loss in UT history... nope, sorry that was the 66-3 loss to UCLA...I was there. By the way...UCLA has classy fans and they travel better than any school that I've ever seen come to Austin in my 20 years of attending UT home games.

Oh my, I just realized that this game was in Stillwater! I thought maybe the OSU team bus missed the little commuter college between the two highway exits and got lost in Houston traffic. Losing to Cougar High at home though? I hope Gundy has enough personal security guards and a safe place to hide ;)

silver surfer... it was called the Southwest Conference, not Southwestern.

Whit... calling them Cougar High is just plain insulting to the institution, not the team. not cool. I am not a Cougar fan, but I hope you're not a UT fan (UT fans love to call UH Cougar high is why). As I recall, "Cougar High" still has the claim of handing UT its worst home loss in school history. It shouldn't be a surprise at all that UH can be competitive with Big 12 schools considering most of the coaches come from there.

We're down, but not out. If we (OSU) can bounce back and keep Houston as our only loss up to when we play Texas, then we should be in good shape to come out with a win against them. Our defense needs to stop the short passes and our offense needs to communicate more! Oh, we also need to stop running Hunter up the MIDDLE! Where we may have had no chance to see a Big 12 title in the past, we are still in the running for it since OU lost to BYU. It's funny though. OSU is getting alot of hate for losing to Houston...a GOOD team that shouldn't be overlooked!

Oh my god...really? OSU can't handle Cougar High? I can't think of anything more humiliating. Unfortunately they are not just hurting themselves but the entire conference. The two Oklahoma teams need to quit reading their own press clippings and just go out and take care of business on the field. Good grief, I still can't believe it...freakin' Cougar High. Maybe they shouldn't aim so high in their non-conference schedule and mix in some division II teams. WOW

My big question here is "Why on earth is OSU ranked #5 in the country?" Because they beat Missouri last year? Top 25, sure, Top 15 even but #5? They're not even close. If they can come back from this loss and beat Texas and OU and Tech and run the table, THEN maybe they deserve to be ranked 5th but that ain't gonna happen..... Go Blue!

Good game by the coogs but they still need alot of work defensively. To be a top 25 team you have to be able to make the other team eran the points and not give them away as U of H did in the second half. Other than the interception at the end of the game OSU was moving the ball all over U of H. Still a great win against the Big 12 and if Coach Sumlin can make this defense tougher than watch out.

Florida SHOULD win it ALL ... they play nobody. Don't impress with opponents such as Charleston Southern... Troy... Florida International!!!! Come on - its a joke, right!!! It will be a bad year if FL does not go undefeated through the regular season they only play ranked teams of #21 GA (rebuilding year) and #11 LSU (clearly not LSU's best team of late).... until they reach the SEC championship and Bama takes their head off in Atlanta.
