AMES, Iowa (AP)—Ricky Stanzi threw a career-high four touchdown passes and Iowa forced six turnovers in beating Iowa State 35-3 on Saturday, the Hawkeyes’ first victory on their rivals’ field in six years.

Iowa, which fell out of the Top 25 after squeezing out a 17-16 victory over Northern Iowa a week ago, had a much easier time in what’s annually the state’s biggest athletic event.

Tyler Sash tied a school record by making three of Iowa’s five interceptions, and the Hawkeyes (2-0) also recovered an Iowa State fumble. Stanzi and the offense converted four of those turnovers into touchdowns.

Though he wasn’t especially sharp against the Cyclones (1-1), Stanzi still completed 18 of 34 passes for 197 yards with two interceptions. That was more than enough to give coach Kirk Ferentz just his second victory in six games at Jack Trice Stadium.

Iowa had not won at Iowa State since a 40-21 victory in 2003. It was the most lopsided game in the series since a 63-20 Iowa rout in 1997.

Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud suffered through a miserable day, finishing 10 of 22 for 79 yards and four interceptions. Freshman Jerome Tiller replaced him with 4:18 left in the third quarter and finished the game. He was intercepted once.

The Cyclones now have gone 14 straight quarters without scoring a touchdown against Iowa.

Brett Greenwood added two interceptions for the Hawkeyes, and Jeremiha Hunter recovered a fumble, his second big play in as many weeks. Hunter had the last of two field goal blocks in the final seconds that preserved the victory over Northern Iowa.

He fell on Alexander Robinson’s fumble at the Iowa State 48 early in the third quarter, setting up Stanzi’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Allen Reisner, who caught the ball in the right flat and loped untouched into the end zone for a 21-3 lead.

Greenwood picked off his second pass a little more than 3 minutes later and returned it 17 yards to his own 48. Stanzi’s 39-yard pass to Trey Stross set up freshman Brandon Wegher’s first collegiate touchdown, a 1-yard dive.

Wegher, who scored 54 touchdowns as a high school senior last fall, carried 15 times for 101 yards.

Stanzi’s 6-yard TD pass to freshman Keenan Davis capped an 84-yard drive that followed Sash’s final interception.

Iowa capitalized on an onside kick that backfired and an interception to take a 14-3 lead during a first half filled with mistakes by both sides.

Stanzi and Arnaud both overthrew receivers or tried to force the ball into coverage. David Sims picked off two of Stanzi’s passes, while Arnaud was intercepted three times.

Sash’s second interception, on a ball tipped by Greenwood, set the Hawkeyes up at the ISU 24 late in the first half. Three plays later, Derrell Johnson-Koulianos got a step on cornerback Kennard Banks and laid out in the end zone to catch Stanzi’s nicely thrown ball for an 18-yard touchdown that made it 14-3.

Iowa State went up 3-0 on Grant Mahoney’s 46-yard field goal late in the first quarter. The Cyclones then tried to catch the Hawkeyes off guard with an onside kick, but Iowa’s Bruce Davis fell on the ball at the ISU 46.

A personal foul on Banks, who wrestled Stross to the turf when both were out of bounds, put the ball on the Iowa State 12 and two plays later, Stanzi flipped a 1-yard pass to Brett Morse for a touchdown.

As a ISU grad from '75 living in the south and having to listen to ACC and SEC fans all
year long...the crap I am getting is too much to bear. I desprately need some help!
The on side kick was a terrible call by a first year coach. If that is the collective thinking of the coaching staff, we are in trouble. Arnaud has never looked so bad...and it wasn't like he did not have time to look for a receiver. There were so many Iowa defenders around the guy he decided to throw to, he would have had to have looked twice to see if anyone from his team was there..

And for the Iowa fans who believed the preseason ranking...I am sorry! You're hot there.

    Go Cyclones!

Look, I'm a recent(as in May 09 grad) from Iowa State.

I watched the game today and while I'm Cy or die till the end, I am also a realist.

We were atrocious. Bad penalties all game long killing any momentum we may have had. Don't mistake that for excuses, that's not what it is. Penalties hurt, but turnovers KILL. Iowa's defense is well...Iowa's Defense. Really, I wasn't surprised about any of it.

Speaking of surprised...WHAT THE HELL was with the 1st quarter onside kick? Yes, I KNOW that a recovery after points scored and getting the ball back can swing a game, but really, how often does that REALLY work? Can someone with more insight that me explain? I'm no coach, nor do I try to be, but that seemed pathetic, even bordering on hopefully amateur.

Yeah, every loss to Iowa hurts. BUT, there are/were no excuses this year. We didn't get it done. Hell, even true freshman Wegher from Sioux City Heelan in Iowa got a century plus against us.

The future is here. What do we make of it? Can we foresee better things or is it blurry? I have faith in the new coach, but today was big brother basically telling little brother he didn't belong in the back yard, let alone our own stadium.

    # 7 Hawkeye

2008 mean anything? Didn't think so. I can rattle off MANY lopsided scores in the history of the rivalry.

    Eat it up.

Iowa played crappy last week, but still beat UNI the 4th ranked team in Div 2 or FBS/FCS whatever they are called, and then was voted out of the Top-25. Played much better this week against ISU, a Div 1 team who is worse than UNI. Will they be voted back in? #25 Missouri barely got by Bowling Green this week, will they be voted out of top 25? Most of the posts are obvious anti-Iowa, predicting no more than 5, 6 wins for the Hawks---what's that say about your team since we are 2-0. Don't think Iowa right now is as good as their pre-season 21/22 ranking--only because their QB Stanzi, who has a great arm, has mediocre accuracy at best. If Iowa wants to be a top-teir Big 10 team this year, that boy needs to learn how to hit the broad side of a barn.

ISU was bad yes. But Iowa was horrible. If it wasn't for all the turnovers (from bad passes from ISU), then Iowa wouldn't have put up more than 10 points. No way the Hawks win 5 games this year.

ya iowa looked much better today....against a team who just broke a 10 game losing streak last week against a D-1 AA team. until iowa starts beating a team thats worth a sh-- they might be considered mediocre at best. Iowa 2009 record-7-5 at best.

Those who do the rankings forget that UNI can compete at the Division 1 level much more competitvely than many Div 1 programs.
Today was a good game, but Stanzi still needs to play the FIRST HALF!
Defensively? Sash, 3 interceptions. Greenwood, 2 picks and 1 assist to Sash. Not a bad day for the Hawks..
