‘Noles rally for 19-9 win over Jacksonville State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Florida State needed two scores in the final 35 seconds Saturday night to avoid arguably one of the most embarrassing upsets in school history.

Ty Jones’ 1-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left put the Seminoles ahead of lower-division Jacksonville (Ala.) State and teammate Kevin McNeil returned a fumble for a score 21 seconds later to seal the 19-9 victory.

Trailing 9-7, Jones’ TD rallied the Seminoles and McNeil scooped up Ryan Perrilloux’s fumble and ran 33 yards for his score. McNeil also blocked a field goal try by Jacksonville’s Patrick Tatum in the third quarter that could have given the Gamecocks a 12-7 lead.

The visiting Gamecocks (0-2) took advantage of three Florida State turnovers to keep control of the contest until the final minute.

Florida State (1-1) hasn’t lost to a school in the Football Championship Subdivision since a 9-0 defeat to William & Mary in 1969.

The Seminoles were listless for much of the game, coming just five days after a 38-34 loss to archrival Miami. Florida State makes its first road appearance next Saturday for a date with No. 9 Brigham Young.

Christian Ponder’s 24-yard pass to Richard Goodman with 1:11 left in the game set up Jones’ go-ahead score. Ponder threw for a career high 324 yards, completing 22 of 35 passes without a touchdown or interception—teaming mostly with Goodman, who caught eight passes for 80 yards.

Perrilloux completed 12 of 27 passes for Jacksonville State for 213 yards and a first quarter touchdown that put the Gamecocks into a 6-0 lead.

Jacksonville State led 9-7 at the half on Tatum’s 37-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Dustin Hopkins extra point kick gave Florida State a 7-6 lead with 1:25 left in the first quarter. Jones scored the touchdown on a 7-yard run that tied the game after Ponder teamed up with tight end Caz Piurowski on a 53-yard pass on play.

Florida State’s pass defense troubles were evident on Jacksonville’s opening drive as Perrilloux connected on a 28-yard touchdown pass with a wide-open Jamal Young. The extra point failed when the snap was mishandled.

Why even discuss FSU, Miami will be back first, and the Gators will still rule. Bowden should step down cuz fisher has no authority. I think they were invited to SEC play, i may be mistaken! Go Gators and SEC!

mouthing off about the schedule, look what conference the national tittle holders have come from then talk.and when tebow leave someone else will step up....have'nt you been watching the recurting
the last few years.so be proud that someone from the state is on top. and yes I do miss the uf and fsu games of old.

Check your stats bug guy. NFL? Back-ups? What in the hell are you talking about? You suggested that FSU has a harder schedule? Your cracked out. I would not call Jacksonville hard. Your teams sucks, Bowden's wins will be taken away soon.. FSU wants to appeal but that's not going to work. So now what in the hell is your cracked out ass talking about. I just want to know why, with the supposedly 5th best OL in the country, four deep in RBs, and two big -- blocking TEs, and we can't run the ball against a 1-AA defense??? I sat there in the pouring down rain last night just thinking how bad can it get. I'm just glad it was raining. -- it disguised my TEARS!

Every team has their day. When you look at it, a win is a win. Miami was the most dominant team in the 80's as were the Noles in the 90's. Right now, the Gator's are the best team, and I bleed garnet and gold. It's just one of those phases a team goes through. You can't be on top forever.

Hey mighty gator. You may be on top now but whatcha gonna do when Tebow leaves. ALL champions eventually fall. Enjoy the ride because UF will fall like Miami and FSU did. Its the nature of the game so don't get to proud bud.

I was a Gator fan when the Gators had never, and I mean NEVER won the SEC. Ray Graves, John Reeves, Carlos Alvarez, Charlie Casey, Larry Smith, Jack Youngblood and a guy named Little Larry Libatore. Urban Meyer is a great coach and human being. Tim Tebow is a great ball player and an even greater man.

The same can be said for Bobby Bowden. A finer man has never been, And the Noles teams of old were a sight to behold. I remember when they took on the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan IN the Big House, LSU at home PITT and Tony D on the road Ohio State in the Horseshoe. Thats what put Bobby and FSU on the map. That and recruiting guys from the likes of C and B schools as we were back then. A schools and AA schools when Fla wouldn't venture out of Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tampa etc. Both are great schools with great football history. All the BS is just that and it makes you look foolish. I pull for FSU but I greatly admire and respect them both. Even Miami. Sometimes.

I am a canes fan who bleeds orange and green but it is so sad to see all of you bowden bashers out here.because without bobby bowden there is or would never have been a florida state team that was ever any good,The simple fact is that bobby bowden is florida state and just like jopa he will retire at his leasure and deservedly so lay off him. Florida is just at their time right now, urban meyer is the real deal. Don't look now but HERE COME THEM CANES!!!!

Todd-Are you for real? A tougher schedule than Florida? Wow. Wishful thinking. You suck. Bobby sucks. Jimbo sucks. Ponder sucks. We have been hearing about the FSU comeback for years. The proof is in the pudding. You are the one that needs to give it a rest. FSU sucks.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Pity is the only thing that comes to mind, especially since FSU will be the victims of Tebow's last game in The Swamp. Think he'll be ready for that one? Go find a rocking chair Bobby, you're done.

Who says you have to beat a team senseless to win. I know FSU is not where they need to be yet but Ponder has a lot of potential as does Jimbo Fisher. Yes the defense is not what it used to be but the team is still rebuilding to get back to the dominating style they had in the 90's. Don't blame Bobby or anyone else it is just the nature of the game. FSU WILL be back sooner than later in the mean time we got to take the good with the bad a win is a win. Good luck Seminoles may the force be with you. GO NOLES.

there is one problem with you people out there, about the FSU team you dont look at the wins they have all together and their schedule which is tougher then Florida and miami has because it tougher then their's schedule is and everyone else's schedule is it's like who is troy huh huh that's like a high school team and the team before that all they can play sounds like powder puff teams first where is the real man's team why not play teams like Tennessee ,usc, miami,va tech and etc, all teams like them start out that way so i dont want to hear about the noles until you guy and your teams play real teams and not powder teams like you do .Hell if the nole play teams like that and their easy schedule we be undefeated too. you know it, so until you guys who hates FSU play real games and harder schedule like FSU just shut up and get off Bobby and the entire college of Florida State back and rear and move on P.S. oh one more thing all good comes to a end and you guys out there with good teams and easy schedules, one day the nole will be there and you guys will be down at the bottom looking up.
