Toledo hands Colorado 2nd loss in 5 days, 54-38

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP)—Colorado looked helpless trying to stop Aaron Opelt and Toledo.

Now the Buffaloes have to find a way to keep their season from flying apart after starting off coach Dan Hawkins’ fourth season with two discouraging losses in less than a week.

Colorado (0-2) gave up big play after big play against Toledo (1-1) which averaged nearly 10 yards per play and amassed 624 yards in Toledo’s 54-38 win over the Buffaloes on Friday night.

The tired-looking Buffs were pushed around by archrival Colorado State just five days earlier in a 23-17 loss on Sunday that was capped by the indignity of Rams fans storming Folsom Field.

Hawkins exhaled deeply afterward when asked about what was wrong with his defense.

“Too many big plays for sure,” he said.

Opelt threw a 70-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and scampered 61 yards early in the fourth to thwart a late Colorado rally and put the Rockets up by 20.

“I didn’t know I could still run like that,” Opelt said. “I got out in the open field and it shocked me a little bit.”

Opelt took apart Colorado’s defense through the air and on the ground, throwing four touchdown passes and running for two more. He rolled up 428 yards of offense, nearly outgaining the Buffaloes (451 yards) on his own.

Hawkins, who had to answer critics earlier in the week about his decision to start his son, Cody, at quarterback, is sure to hear more questions now.

He’s 13-26 in his fourth season with Colorado. Weeks after the Buffaloes fell to Nebraska to miss becoming bowl eligible in the finale last season, Hawkins predicted “10 wins and no excuses” for 2009. He said it wasn’t a prediction.

“I can’t control what people think,” he said. “I know that we’re doing things right.”

Hawkins said he’s not worried about his team’s focus going forward.

“It’s real easy to be a critic. It’s real easy to be a quitter.”

Buffs receiver Scotty McKnight said it was a somber locker room afterward, but he insisted that no one’s giving up on the season or their coach.

“Everyone on the team believes in Coach Hawkins,” he said. “We’re going to get this turned around.”

About the only bright spot for the Buffaloes was sophomore tailback Darrell Scott. After carrying the ball only once in the opener for 1 yard, he ran for 85 yards on 12 rushes—all in the first half.

Cody Hawkins completed 30 of 64 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns— but also threw three interceptions.

Hawkins was shaken up after diving in for a meaningless late TD, when he and Toledo’s Archie Donald had a helmet-to-helmet collision at the goal line. The quarterback’s condition wasn’t available after the game.

Toledo recovered the onside kick and knelt the ball to end the game just before 1 a.m.

Rockets running back DaJuane Collins ran for 162 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

Opelt finished with 319 yards passing a week after throwing for 423 yards in a loss at Purdue. He completed 15 of 23 and ran for 109 yards.

His 27-yard run with 36 seconds left in the first half put the Rockets up 23-3, and he opened the second half with a 26-yard TD pass to Kenny Stafford.

The Rockets are 3-0 at home against the Big 12, having beaten Kansas in 2006 and Iowa State in ’07.

Toledo, which plays Ohio State next week in Cleveland, has seven victories over teams from BCS conferences in the last nine seasons, including last year’s win at Michigan.

It’s the first time the Buffaloes have lost to a Mid-American Conference school. They beat Kent State in 1977 and Miami in 2007.

After the Barnett fiasco, Hawkins at least returned dignity to the program. If Hawkins is let go, I'm wondering if they'll offer the job to Mike Shanahan? He coached division II, Eastern Illinois, before the pros. Boulder is such a perfectionist place that I wouldn't be surprised that they'd fire him. I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

    41. Gee Ken, a better question has been WHEN has Nebraska played the Pathetic 10. A home and home against USC at the top of their game a few years ago during the failed Callahan experiment. Prior to that I think we played ASU in '02 and beat them by about 35, Cal a few year before that and beat them by 45, The you get into the 90s where we smoked the Pathetic 10 regularly, minus a fluke ASU game against Jake the Fake. 5th in the PAC 10? Maybe a few years ago, not today and not at any point in the last 40 years other than the failed Callahan experiment.

Someone forgot to remind Hawkins this is Division 1 football, the Big 12, "it ain't innerrmrrrllls". That's one of the worst conditioned and worst coached teams I've ever seen. And who cares if he starts his son over another guy. It was supposidly a close battle in the spring, Hawkins got hurt, they were getting blown out and you still don't see the other kid at all? Not even to get some reps and experience if Hawkins goes down? Again, it was supposed to be a toss-up between QBs and he didn't even give the other kid a chance when you're down 30? Moronic.

as an alum from the late 60's that was a total disgrace that cu displayed in that friday night debacle at toledo. hawkins has had more than enough time to put this program in the toilet. no emotions on the sideline- it's like he's carrying on a conversation with his stockbroker. big mistake having his son as the starting qb- too small and it has to cause some friction on the team.. you almost want to bring back mc cartney and his band of thugs. at least they performed like most of the top programs in the country. and how about bringing back the uniforms from that natl. championship team.. the ones with the big COLORADO on the front. the new and modern and smallprint letters on the front just add to the whimpiness of this program. miss you eddie crowder---- ken

Hey Truth-- playing your own son preferentially over a better QB is unfair, and also causes THOUSANDS of people pain every week they route for CU. How is this being a NICE GUY?

    Think about it.

The Buff's have Wyoming coming to town and should get a win. Hawkins job will be safe for another week at least.

A loss to Wyoming and and 0-3 start would be like committing Head Coach suicide!

Hawk is a nice guy, I would hate to see this happen.

Pack 10?? when is the last time NEB beat a pack 10 school? NEB would finish 5th in the pack 10.
    ------------------
And USC would finish 3rd in the Mountain West. What's your point?

"coach Dan Hawkins is 13-26 in his fourth season with Colorado.
that is exactly what liberals think is an OK great system and record.
coach Hawkins has found his dream employer"
    ------------------------------
I've been a Buff fan since I was a kid and Bobby Anderson was the star. I saw the solid teams under Eddie Crowder (3rd in nation in 1971 - coached 1963-73), the decent teams under Bill Mallory (1973-78), the destruction of the program under croo.ked Chuck Fairbanks (1979-81), the rebuilding and eventual national championship under Bill McCartney (1982-94), good (but flakey) teams under Ricky Neuheisel (1995-98), a Big 12 Championship and five North titles under Barnett.....1999-2005, the "fall" of Barnett..........and finally, the Hawkins era in it's 4th year now. The last time the Buffs had four seasons under .500 in a row was in the 1940's. It is a possibility. The defense last night was awful - yet, they had many chances to stay in the game and make it a basketball score, but they kept systematically falling apart on offense. The score could have easily been 55-54.

I have to say that it is time for coach Hawkins to go. First Montana State now this. I used to be on the Hawkins bandwagon but there is something seriously wrong with this team. Dave Logan for head coach - is this week early enough?

Mattehw R - I agree with most of your comments regarding the BCS system, but your characterization of Colorado as a top-rated Big 12 program is just plain wrong. No one in the Big 12 saw them as other than fifth in the North Division and 11th in the conference. Even Texas A&M is anticipated to be better than Colorado and the Buffs are playing down to expectations. Don't mistake the programs at Colorado and Iowa State as being indicative of the caliber of play throughout the Big 12. Yes, OU stunk it up against BYU, but Texas, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Kansas State, Baylor and Texas A&M are legit. Texas Tech didn't show much last week, but they will. OU will recover by changing their offensive scheme until the return of Sam Bradford. Iowa State will improve simply because they sent Gene Chizik off to ruin Auburn's program. Colorado will not improve until they hire a coach.
