Pike, Cincinnati zip past Rutgers 47-15

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly unleashed his high-speed, no-huddle offense—and quarterback Tony Pike pushed it into overdrive.

Pike threw for a career-high 362 yards and three touchdowns, and the defending Big East champion Bearcats hurried past Rutgers 47-15 on Monday.

“The pace was absolutely crucial today,” said Kelly, who began his third season with the Bearcats as a rising star in the business. “You knew what Rutgers was going to do and that is control the clock. So we knew it was absolutely crucial to push the ball down the court.”

Courted by Washington and Tennessee last season, Kelly might not be long for the Queen City and his team showed why in the season opener.

The Bearcats pushed it Oklahoma-style and put up 510 yards and 45 points in the first three quarters. They also got a jump on the conference race by improving to 4-0 against Rutgers since joining the league.

With the luxury of a returning starter at quarterback for the first time at UC, Kelly doesn’t have to hold anything back offensively.

“I didn’t do a lot of heavy lifting today from the sidelines,” he said. “All those kids out there really made this thing work.”

The Scarlet Knights, looking to christen their newly expanded stadium and extend a seven-game winning streak, couldn’t keep up. Instead, it looked like the bad ol’ days at Rutgers. It was the most points allowed by the Scarlet Knights since Virginia Tech put up 48 in October 2003.

“Certainly not what my visions were of what today was going to be like,” said coach Greg Schiano, who has built Rutgers from a sadsack program to a consistent winner in his nine seasons.

Domenic Natale threw three first-half interceptions for the Scarlet Knights and the senior left open the possibility that his first career start could be his last. Highly touted freshman Tom Savage played the second half and finished 15 of 23 for 135 yards with a touchdown pass.

Pike completed 27 of 34 passes, Mardy Gilyard caught eight passes for 89 yards and a score and Isaiah Pead scored two touchdowns.

With Pike directing traffic at the line of scrimmage, the Bearcats burned down the field on the opening drive of the game, covering 81 yards in 2:29 without an incomplete pass. Pead capped the drive with a 2-yard TD run.

“Definitely a byproduct of our experience,” Pike said about the speed and efficiency of the offense. “I think our offense tonight was light years ahead of where we were last year at this time.”

Rutgers’ response to UC’s speed was a methodical, 20-play, 78-yard touchdown drive, that took more than 10 minutes and was capped by a 5-yard run by Joe Martinek.

Ultimately, though, the team breaking in a new quarterback was no match for the one with a seasoned veteran.

Natale, replacing the departed Mike Teel, held the ball too long and had several throws sail high. Cincinnati turned his first two picks into touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Pike went 20 of 25 in the first half for 286 yards with touchdown passes of 5 yards to Gilyard and 41 yards to Pead as the Bearcats raced to a 31-7 halftime lead.

“I thought we were a step behind all day—two steps,” Schiano said.

Cincinnati even gave Rutgers a dose of the Wildcat—maybe the Bearcat?— with redshirt freshman tight end Travis Kelce, a former quarterback, taking two snaps and bulling 16 yards to finish off the first of three consecutive second-quarter touchdown drives.

Kelce added a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter out of a formation Kelly said he picked up during a trip to Florida.

“We stole it from them. I’m fine saying that,” Kelly said with a smile. “And we executed it well.”

That made it 38-7 and Rutgers’ big day was ruined.

The two-year project to enclose the stadium, put in luxury suites and install a new scoreboard increased capacity from about 42,000 to more than 52,000 and cost $102 million.

A crowd of 53,737 was raucous early, quiet and dejected by halftime and mostly out the door by the fourth quarter.

I had never heard of Pike until I saw him in last night's game. He methodically dissected Rutger's defense, with the aid of some talented teammates. Pike's throws were crisp and obviously on target. Early in the game he completed a pass on the left sideline that the idiot announcers wold have had us believe that he luckily noticed an open reciever, after having to move around in the pocket. It became obvious that with the protection that he had he was making excellent reads and taking whatever Rutger gave him. Granted that most of his passing yards were made after the catch, he nevertheless put the ball in the right person's hands. I don't know if Rutgers is as bad a team as UC made them seem, I don't think they are, but UC really looked good. I doubt that they will have as any broken or missed tackles in their future games, but they are an impressive bunch.

Both the Big 10 and the ACC are better than the Big East in football.

I feel sorry for "Been there." Let me help you with some important advice. Grow up. As far as Plutaris is concerned, your ignorance would be laughable if it weren't so pathetic. It's not even worth my time to enlighten you. Speaking of enlightenment, let me just help inform you that Rutgers was recently ranked as the 54th best academic university on the planet. That makes me rather proud, if I don't mind saying so myself. Let me further help inform you that Rutgers was tied for 2nd with Stanford in regard to academic ranking of college football teams (Duke was first.) I wonder what the final score would be if the "University" of Cincinnati football team were to "play" Rutgers in the classroom. I shudder to think. They'd have to use the "Mercy Rule." Aside from your obvious ignorance about college football matters, it also appears that you might be a UC graduate or alumnus. Aside from the numerous grammatical errors, can you say "sentence fragment?" I didn't think so.

Thanks Craig #25 for making my point. OSU probably won't schedule UC again because they do not want to lose to an in state school. You Suckeyes stick with playing Miami. Ohio and the mighty Youngstown St. Have fun at the USC blowout.

Okay so iv e been saying cincinnati is the best team in the big east for years and finally last year they proved me right! then im watching pre season coverage and everyone is saying cincy is gonna finish 3rd or 4th in the big east and they have lost too much on their defense! haha well they just got blasted! cincy had one of the best ofeenses in the nation last year and will again this year! obviously they blew "mighty" rutgers out! rutgers is overrate! they suck! cincy is the elite of big est and should be in the big ten! cincy will beat ohio state if they played! they have way too much speed for them! and not next year but the year after that they do play and as long as brian kelly sticks around they will prevail! the alm ost had oklahoma last year! and thats when oklahoma was at its best! dont let the score of that game fool you! cincy was beating oklahoma til the middle of the 3rd qt then a couplke of bad calls and mistakes cost them but they went toe to toe with the national championship runners up! then just because they lose to a va tech team which was playing the best ball that they had ever played they wanna push uc way down in the polls and dont even put them in the polls this year! well for those people: you can shove it up your ---! go cincy baby!

OSU was supposed to play UC again in PBS but last year bought their way out of the game for a cool million bucks. You can thank OSU for the new practice field at UC. The contract between UC and OSU is over and you will never see OSU schedule them again.

Yes OSU came to PBS the year they won the National Championship( the ref who called the delayed pass interference in end zone still receives checks from OSU for that horrible call), and outplayed them and should have beat them. A no call in the endzone at the end of that game helped OSU escape with an undeserved win. A game was supposed to be played at PBS in 2011 I believe but OSU begged out of it and it is now being played in Columbus. OSU is a very average team and I do believe UC could beat them this year or last. But OSU does not want to lose to an in state school, so look for them to avoid UC ,especially in Cincinnati, at all costs. As for Kelly going to Louisville you must be on crack, the only job I see Kelly bolting for is Notre Dame. So lets hope Notre Dame has a great year and they keep fat boy. I am still pissed at Kelly for not playing Grutza in Orange Bowl.

Ohio State is so awful, they're terrible, Utah State would beat them 153-1.5, the Big Ten has two Division I teams, Ohio State only plays high school teams.

Love it. Ohio State must be one of the most hated teams in the country, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Whatever. It's better than being one of the hundred teams or so that are actually worse than Ohio State. I'll take our 100K fans per game, millions of dollars a year and 10 wins a year and constant bowl appearances and go cry in my corner about how awful we are.

Oh. And the same people that tear us down (the press, including ESPN) -- same people that make us overrated in the first place by putting us so high in polls and putting all of our games on prime-time TV and talking about us all the time. Kind of interesting how that works, huh?

    Whatever.

Nice job, UC. Someone needs to keep Rutgers down, because you know how hard ESPN would jack off a New Jersey team if it ever -really- got hard off the ground.

Why would UC want to be compared to the sorry Buckeyes? Ohio state is the MOST OVERRATED football team every year. Uc would've smoked Ohio State last year. I mean come on, The big 10 probley has 2 good teams in it every year. Ohio State plays 75% of their games at home against cupcakes! Navy? New mexico State later this year? ha! So Ohio State plays ONE good team every year , look what happens when they do. they always lose. Ohio State can play Navy, Toledo and New mexico State this year but doesn't play Michigan State? WTF? These so called powerhouses are all the same, play cupcakes, schedule one good team out of 4 and play as many games at home as you can. Real teams like Byu play the big boys. Oh Ohio State won't play Uc unless its at columbus. Thats chicken @#$% football .

Embarrassing display by RU. They need to get some meat on the D-line's interior. No pressure at all on Pike. Savage looks good at QB though. Oh well. Can't deny that Cincy looked real good and RU stunk--that goes for coaching too.

Let me first make a couple of comments. 1. I am an Ohio State Fan. 2. It is great to have a second team in Ohio that I can now root for and who appears to be building a powerhouse football program. Now this, all of the radio shows in Cincinnati are asking why OSU does not play UC. As we all know schedules are made a couple of years out. Saying that OSU does not want to play UC is a stupid comment, if you are saying that feel free to feel stupid. One reason why the programs may not be able to agree is because of money. If OSU plays down at UC they have to play in a 50,000 seat stadium. If they play in Columbus it is a 105,000+ capacity (that will be filled). I have heard the PBS argument and it would make sense to play in a 70,000+ seat stadium. UC fans enjoy this team, they may be very good again this year. That doesn't mean you start calling for the the Buckeyes just yet.
