Harris lifts Miami over FSU in wild one, 38-34

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Jacory Harris stood motionless on the Miami sideline with five seconds remaining, silently pleading for one more stop.

He had done his part.

And after one last review, so did Miami’s defense.

Ailing arm and all, Harris threw for 386 yards—including a 40-yard pass over double coverage to Travis Benjamin that set up Graig Cooper’s 3-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left—and led the Hurricanes past No. 18 Florida State 38-34 in a wild, back-and-forth game on Monday night.

“I was just thinking my team fought through this so long and so hard. All the preparation and it came down to this,” Harris said of watching the final series from the sideline. “Our defense, I know they was going to pull through at the end.”

It went down to the very last play, a pass that Florida State’s Jarmon Fortson nearly scooped off the garnet-colored grass in the end zone as time expired. Fortson argued to no avail, replay officials confirmed that he didn’t have the ball, and Miami (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) flooded the field that bears Bobby Bowden’s name in celebration.

“Whew!” was the first sound Miami coach Randy Shannon made as he left the joyous locker room.

Really, no other words were necessary. And Miami did it to Florida State (0-1, 0-1) again, winning for the fourth time in its last five trips to Florida’s capital city and dealing Bowden another arduous defeat against the team that’s vexed him more than any other.

“It was a great game, though,” Bowden said. “I guess it sounds funny to hear a losing coach say that.”

Harris completed 21 of 34 passes for two touchdowns and two interceptions. He got hurt on the second of those turnovers; Harris was drilled by blitzing cornerback Greg Reid and his throw on that play resulted in nothing more than a pop fly that Markus White ran back 31 yards for a 31-24 Florida State lead with 11:45 remaining.

Harris walked to the sideline, holding his right arm tightly to his chest.

He was fine. Better than fine, actually.

“It was just a bad funny bone incident,” Harris said. “My whole arm went numb. I had to fight through. I had to help this team win.”

He did.

Harris connected with Cooper for a 24-yard score to tie the game at 31, and after Florida State took the lead again on Dustin Hopkins’ 45-yard field goal with 4:11 left, the ‘Canes went back to work. They went 59 yards in six plays, Harris’ perfect lob to Benjamin accounting for most of them, and Cooper plowed in for the go-ahead score.

“This kid,” said Miami running back Javarris James, speaking of the sophomore quarterback, “he’s real poised.”

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder was, too.

Ponder, who ran for 144 yards against Miami last year, went 30 yards on a draw play to get deep into Hurricanes territory with 1 minute left. When Brandon Harris was flagged for pass interference, Florida State had 14 seconds to go 2 yards and win the game.

First down, Harris tipped the ball away from Fortson.

Second down, Ponder’s pass for Fortson sailed high.

Third down, Fortson got his hands on the ball as he hit the ground—and it squirted away. After the review, Miami could celebrate.

“Another typical Miami-Florida State game,” Shannon said. “It’s what you look forward to when you play Florida State. It seems the last couple of years it comes down to the last play.”

Ponder completed 24 of 41 passes for a career-best 294 yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to keep Florida State from dropping its third straight home game dating to last season, a first under Bowden.

“It was a poor throw. It was low,” Ponder said of the final play. “We had an opportunity to win it. Now we’ve got to forget it.”

Miami outgained Florida State 476-404.

“A heck of a television game,” Bowden said.

Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple’s new schemes were an instant hit with the most important Miami fan: university president Donna Shalala, who beamed after Miami rolled up 229 yards on its 29 first-half plays.

“What’s not to enjoy?” Shalala said when Miami was leading 14-10. “We’ve got an offense.”

So did Florida State.

The Seminoles scored the first 13 points of the second half, with Ponder running in from 9 yards out to put Florida State back on top on the first drive following intermission—aided by, of all things, a 15-yard late hit penalty on the kickoff by Miami kicker Matt Bosher—then throwing to Taiwan Easterling for a 21-yard score for a 23-14 edge with 4:57 left in the third.

This one, though, was just getting started.

“We came a long way tonight,” James said.

Even though it was a good game and all, and probably on of the best FSU UM games I have ever watched, Florida State gave that game to Miami. There is really only one person who can take the blame and thats Jimbo Fisher. Thats providing hes the idiot who let 20 to 25 seconds tick off the clock trying to swap out players. If they had just ran the ball with Jones, Florida State ends up winning.

to post #293 by G and franklin-
both of you are idiots and don't read very well especially history and stats. to G in case you didn't understand i could care less if you beat fsu cause i'm a CANE for life and we own the gators by a landslide. u say that the gators players were almost the same as canes last year....r u serious? come on your team had been in the top 10 favorites even from the year before and miami had barely brought in our group that is playing now as sophmores. who the hell are you gonna have in 2013 huh? no one! oh yea and you call our stadium shyt..... we play in a nfl caliber stadium once used for the dolphins incase you forget moron. seems that the dolphins wanted to upgrade and leave their historic stadium with a team that would represent it 100 % BABY! EAT SHYT AND DYE! oh yea one more thing "G".... YOUR MOM WAS SO GOOD LAST NIGHT BYATCH!!!!!!! TO franklin...... your last comment didn't even come back at me good enough for me to chew you out. you're weak and embarrasing and i feel sorry for your mother loser. ha ha ha. i ain't ever gonna be sentimental about kicking the gators asssssesssss for years on end. you see i can take a loss cause sometimes shyt happens but when a team like the CANES beats up the gators for that many years it's pretty obvious whos better than who overall and in the long run. so yea u all got us last year and i hope you enjoyed it asssslicker cause last year you were a good team..."were" (past tense) and ain't no way you can ever compare to CANE'S HISTORY BOY! NOW ALL YOU LIL' GATORS GO CRY IN THE CAR CAUSE THERE IS NO COME BACK FOR THIS HERE TRUTH AND WHATEVER YOU DO PUT WILL BE COMING OUT OF YOUR A$$ TO TRY AND LOOK COOL AND BACK UP YOUR TEAM AND THAT'S COOL BUT JUST KNOW THAT US CANES DON'T REALLY HAVE TO SAY SHYT TO BACK US UP WE JUST KNOW. PEACE. :) LOL!

I'm a USC fan but also a college football fan in general. I have to say...this game was EPIC!! I was incredibly impressed with how both teams played. It's a cliche I know but it was one of those games where I hated to see someone lose (Though I'm sure Miami fans would disagree vehemently). Both teams seemed like they were in mid-season form. I haven't seen this much drama in FLA since Doug Flutie came to town (I THINK that game was in Florida). Unfortunately for FSU and Bowden, it ended as it often seems to in this matchup. It's clear that both of these teams have to be taken VERY seriously this season. As a fan of the game, I take my hat off to Miami AND FSU for what will likely be the game of the year!

rebelutionaa, you're cute. thanks for the laughs.
it seems to me the face of florida football - that is, COLLEGE football, NOW - is pretty obvious. advice: turn on your tv, put it on espn, and watch for about 15 minutes. you're a marginal snippet, kid.
you won one game and you're already getting sentimental about 10 years ago. i do think it's kind of sweet, though. - like an old man romanticizing his youth.

I'll admit first and foremost, that I am a Miami fan (Go 'U'!) But, how can anyone who watched the replays of the final incompletion, have thought it was a catch? They replayed it 5 times -- and each time, from different angles, it was glaringly obvious that he ball hit the ground, and was trapped against his chest. I mean, even the wide-receiver protested for all of 5 seconds, before leaving the field (not exactly something you'd expect if HE believed it had been legitimate.)

To those people that have disparaged Bobby Bowden -- seriously, stop typing. He's recruited an incredible young team, that will be dominant in the next few years. What you SHOULD be doing, is praying to God he sticks around to return the program to it's former luster.

I give props to Bowden for admitting Miami was the better team. No excuses for losing, or b*tching about time on the clock -- class act, right there folks.

I said it before, and I'll say it again... Miami and Florida State have YOUNG ATHLETIC talent. They'll recapture the nation's imagination over the next two seasons. (Sorry Urban, but when Tebow graduates, your program takes a step or two backwards.)

    Go 'U' !

Obviously you do care, because you took 2 or so minutes to write your response to me. So don't act like you don't care.

    Manny T, Post 248

Just because I think that FSU had every chance in the world to walk away with a victory doesn't make me a hater. I could care less if Miami does well. It was a great game, but a game that FSU should of won. Point blank.

haha you crack me up. florida is the 3rd best in the state? with fsu ahead of us? sh1t if thats the case u might as well put FIU ahead of FSU cuz u all suck ass, and we'll show it to you all too when you guys come to the swamp. then we'll put our foot up your ass n show you why we've beaten you all for like the past five years.
back on subject, the gators are first in the state, followed by the canes (kudos to you all) followed by FSU. and by the way, for last years game, most of the florida team was made up of players that were much like yours. thats a sorry ass excuse, saying how you were all freshmen n shyt like that. you all got beat, and in 2013, Meyer is gonna come down to your sh!tty little thing that you all call a stadium and whoop your ass.
    with love

Regardless of all the above feedback, this game was a great game not for only college football, but for both programs. The U might be back as national power (if so, watch out) or this might be the best game of the season for them. Either way, great game. I grew up in Miami and went to every home game as a kid and went to FSU for college. I've come to appreciate the great community/people of Leon County but still love CANES football. So I leave on this note,..."can't we all just get along?" In closing, I HATE THE GATORS...GATOR BAIT.

First off i'll say that 'Bama is a good for nothing program who should thank the gods to be ranked so high but i guarantee it wont last very long. BAMA SUCKS. Next to #266 posted by franklin.... I can't believe you are even bringing up last years miami vs. florida game. are you actually proud of beating a bunch of freshman players who actually gave you one of the better games last season. you are pathetic just like the gators and read carefully when i say that Miami is and will always be the face of Florida college football. Miami is #1 and to tell you the truth coming from someone who hates the seminoles, FSU is #2 ahead of your gators. Just look at both teams track records and it's not hard to see that the florida gators are only #3rd best in florida....sorry loser. Your one win last year doesn't even compare to the asswhippin we've been putting on the gators for decades.

Forget this game ever happened guys! LETS GO GET 3 STRAIGHT WINS AND GET BACK IN THE TOP 25! GO 'NOLES! WE ARE THE BEST, FORGET ALL THE REST!
