Snead’s 2 TDs give No. 8 Ole Miss 45-14 win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP)—Jevan Snead sure knows how to finish.

The Mississippi quarterback recovered from an awful start to throw two late touchdowns and Dexter McCluster scored twice to lead the No. 8 Rebels to a 45-14 win over Memphis on Sunday. Snead hit 4 of 5 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, breaking open a close game.

“Another thing you have to love about Jevan is that when things don’t go just right, he doesn’t put his head down,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. “You don’t have to be concerned about that. He’s a winner, and the guy really came back and played well.”

Those who having been watching Snead at Ole Miss will start to notice a trend. Snead got off to a slow start last season before rallying the Rebels to six straight wins. He did just the same in microcosm in the team’s seventh consecutive victory.

Snead was the focus of preseason hype and mentioned as a dark horse candidate for the Heisman Trophy. But when the spotlight first hit him in 2009, he wilted. He completed just 8 of 17 passes for 102 yards with two interceptions through three quarters, missing badly at times.

The offense struggled because of it and was especially dysfunctional in the first half when the team turned the ball over three times, punted three others and gained 144 yards.

It took a big play by Fon Ingram to wipe away those troubles.

It looked like Memphis might take the lead late in the second quarter. The Tigers trailed 10-7 and appeared to have an opportunity to take the lead with a solid drive when Ingram stepped in front of Arkelon Hall’s pass and returned it 38 yards for a 17-7 halftime lead.

“It was just being in the right place at the right time,” Ingram said. “He threw it right to me, and when I caught it I knew it was six.”

That gave Ole Miss confidence going into the second half and Snead completed his personal comeback with a couple of rapid-fire touchdowns of 18 yards to Markeith Summers and 17 yards to McCluster in the fourth.

His counterpart had a much more difficult time in the face of pressure from Ole Miss’ defensive line.

Hall completed 15 of 30 passes with two interceptions for 110 yards. He had 37 yards in the first half and limited the Tigers’ effectiveness with several poor passes well off the mark.

The Tigers had 284 total yards, three turnovers and were 0 for 2 on fourth-down conversions and 4 for 16 on third down.

“You’ve got to give our defense a lot of credit,” Snead said.

The defense’s early stand was repaid as the offense gained strength. Brandon Bolden rushed for 71 yards on nine carries, scored one touchdown and set up McCluster’s 1-yard plunge in the third quarter with a 28-yard run.

McCluster had 50 yards rushing as both the Wild Rebel quarterback and an I-formation tailback and 65 yards receiving, too. Enrique Davis finished off the game with a 29-yard scoring run.

Memphis coach Tommy West stocked up on transfers the last two years in an attempt to improve the talent on his roster and it appeared to work for a while, especially on defense and in the running game. Curtis Steele had 90 yards and two touchdowns, including one that cut it to 24-14. Wisconsin transfer Lance Smith added 63 yards rushing.

The team couldn’t overcome the performance by Hall, though, and West acknowledged it might be time to look more closely at the position.

“I don’t want to create a quarterback deal, but then again we have to play better than we did today,” West said. “I think we all know that. That is not a secret to anyone that watched the game. We can’t continue to make errors and give up touchdowns.”

Pat--------Vince was already gone........ Colt took a redshirt in Vinces' last yr, Jevan enrolled in Jan. in time for spring drills. They were competing for starting job and Colt won because he had been there 1 sem. longer and was a little more familar with playbook. But Mack Brown said that based on ability alone they were dead even. I was pulling for Jevan at the time (he had more accolades coming in) and don't blame him one bit for transferring. He was/is too good a QB to sit behind anybody. He may still have more NFL skills than Colt. I will always pull for Jevan just for the class that he showed going thru all of that.

Snead's solid. He barely got beat out by Colt McCoy at Texas when they were both freshmen fighting to be Vince's back-up. He can play. Ol' Miss is lucky ot have him.

To my fellow Rebel fans....Don't start acting like ASS_oles just because we won the first game....If we didn't beat Memphis we didn't deserve to be ranked in the top 50 much less the top 10.

Stop talking crap.....Go to work....do your job....Go home.....

Memphis needs a coach. They have some players, not sure they would have won...but talk about play calling and being prepared.

Oklahoma, Ohio State, USC and Notre Dame would do OK in SEC. They wouldn't win conference every year, but they would be in upper half most years. My opinion...on average based on recent display of talent....USC would be a 8-0, 7-1 most years, Oklahoma and Ohio State would be 6-2 type team, Notre Dame would be about a 5-3 record in conference. SEC is not the only place they play football and I grew up watching and loving SEC football..still do. These other teams have a lot of talent on their rosters. Oh, and Utah...probably be a 5-3 or 6-2 type W/L record.

I hope Snead just had opening game jitters. He doesn't need to play like he did in first 3 Qtrs or season will be long for fans.

I'm a big Ole Miss fan and have been as long as I can remember. I also pull for USM because my oldest granddaughter is now a student there and is in the band. The Rebs do look good and most teams stumble through opening games because they don't have reliable scouting reports yet. I look for the SEC to be loaded again as usual. Our teams usually beat up on one another in all sports, especially football. I wonder how the Oklahomas, Ohio States, USCs and Notre Dames would do if they played eight SEC teams every year? Bama, LSU and Florida are loaded with talent and have excellent depth which is the thing Ole Miss lacks so it's going to be a dog fight all season. Bama and LSU just need to develop their QBs and get them some playing experience under their belt. I think Miss State has hired an excellent coach and also has some talent. It'll be another interesting and exciting year in the SEC.

Jevan Snead and Ole Miss are for real. When they came to the Swamp and thumped my Gators last year, they made a believer out of me. They will give Alabama a run for the SEC West title and could possibly pull the upset. Remember no one expected them to come to FL and win last year. Another really good team from the Number 1 conference in the NCAA. GO GATORS!!!

not really impressed, they better play alot better when they play in conference. but i will cut them a break and say they are a little rusty, because i know that qb snead is going to be very good. they will have to play really good when the alabama game comes up and they have lsu. if they don't stumble they have a chance to play florida in the championship game. but it could look like 2 or 3 losses.i don't see them running the table, but they are a good team.

Your correct, just when you get in the game, thay stop it for those moron sponsors. I do not know how the players maintain continunity. Big one this week, we (USC) go to Ohio State. My prediction: USC 28, OSU 0.

Did this Writer see any of the game? Honestly I didn't see much but did catch Memphis making it 24-14 with about 6 minutes left, the last 14 pts by Miss. were giveaways including a last second TD run, so 45-14 is pretty misleading, not sure I'd chalk it up as a rout Mr. AP Man, of course by the end of the season, who'll remember any of that, 45-14, oh yeah they killed them...move along...

common sense: if you thought it was long on tv you should have been there waiting out all those tv timeouts! Bama's QB mcelroy did improve as the game went on and that was very incouraging, as well as our o-line play which was our biggers question mark. as far as tennessee goes they did look good and their fans have something to be happy about, they do need to remember that it was just 1 gamw against a very weak team.

Hey Casie C, Post 10: Whats up. I never thought that the Alabama / VT game would ever end. My gosh the commercials. The QB from Alabama learned to play the position during the game, while that mental moron Tyrod Tayor showed his lack of QB required intelligence. Start to put the Hex on tennessee. those rednecks really think they are a contendor.

Kent Austin's [Offensive Coordinator} play-calling, today, was....puzzling (?). Compared to (most) of the games last year, his calls were restrictive to Snead, unimaginative, and (should have been) predicatable by the end of the first half. Maybe he's "saving" other things for later in the season? Still, Ole Miss hung 45 points on a Memphis team loaded with recent transfers from some pretty damn good Division 1 teams. Despite a shaky start, I'll wait to see a few more games under their belt before being too quick with criticism. Ole Miss is a very talented team.
