Stucker makes most of first start in CSU’s win

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—Grant Stucker’s patience finally paid off.

The fifth-year senior quarterback made his first start Sunday night and led Colorado State to a 23-17 upset of Colorado, the Rams’ first win in Boulder since 1986.

Stucker barely beat out Jon Eastman last week for the starting job, a year after losing out to Billy Farris.

“One thing you’ve got to look at it, 50 years down the road, do you think you could’ve stuck it out, regardless if you get the start or not? It’s something I didn’t want to have—regret,” Stucker said.

“I’m very happy that I was able to have that patience to stick it out.”

So are the Rams and their fans, who stormed the field to celebrate the second upset for the Mountain West Conference over a Big 12 team in 24 hours, coming on the heels of BYU’s stunning 14-13 victory over third-ranked Oklahoma.

Stucker threw a 13-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to new running back John Mosure, who also had a 1-yard TD run as the Rams (1-0) took the Folsom Field crowd out early by jumping out to a 17-0 lead.

That helped calm down Stucker, whom Rams coach Steve Fairchild said had a poor week of practice.

“I wasn’t sandbagging anybody. First-year quarterback, there’s just some growing pains,” Fairchild said. “We’re not out of the woods yet with him. I think he’s a talented young man. Hopefully he’ll keep getting better. … I’ll certainly pat him on the back and give him his due. That’s not easy, coming into this place and trying to win a game like that.”

Colorado coach Dan Hawkins—who’s entering a do-or-die fourth season at Boulder—kept his starter a secret until just before kickoff when his son, junior Cody Hawkins, got the nod over Tyler Hansen.

That decision was met with derision by the Buffaloes’ student section as Colorado’s offense struggled behind Hawkins, who completed 7 of 14 passes for 46 yards in a first half that ended with Colorado (0-1) trailing 20-3.

Dan Hawkins said he never considered pulling his son, blaming the lack of cohesion on penalties and mental mistakes: “When you’re three plays and out it’s hard for anyone to get rhythm.”

The Buffaloes looked like that had made the proper adjustments at halftime when they took the opening kickoff and needed just four plays to pull to 20-10 on Brian Lockridge’s 9-yard touchdown run.

Their momentum stalled, however, when wide receiver Scotty McKnight fumbled inside the Rams 20 on a hard hit by free safety Elijah-Blu Smith and linebacker Alex Williams recovered.

On their next drive, the Buffs were stuffed on fourth-and-1 from their own 44. Demetrius Sumler was stopped well short of the first-down marker, snapping a string of a dozen consecutive fourth-down conversions by the Buffaloes going back to last season.

After the Rams decided not to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1, Ben DeLine kicked an 18-yard field goal that gave Colorado State a 23-10 lead with just under nine minutes left.

That decision loomed large when Hawkins threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to McKnight with 1:57 remaining to pull the Buffs to 23-17. Rams safety Klint Kubiak fumbled the onside kick but teammate Dion Morton smothered it.

Leonard Mason (23 rushes for 107 yards) then reeled off a 44-yard run to the Buffs 6 and the Rams took a knee three times to end the game before their fans stormed the field.

“There is not a better feeling I’ve ever had playing the game of football,” said Kubiak, whose father, Houston Texas coach Gary Kubiak, was in the middle of the mosh pit of celebration.

The Buffaloes, whose stated goal of 10 wins has already taken a blow, trudged off the field as the Rams and their fans went wild.

“It’s real tough, especially when you see the fans jumping on your emblem in the middle of the field,” Lockridge said.

Stucker finished 10 of 17 for 208 yards, a TD and two interceptions. Hawkins was 24 of 40 for 222 yards, a TD and an interception.

A big issue for Colorado was the loss of center Mike Iltis to a knee injury in the first quarter. He was replaced by Keenan Stevens but the Buffs’ offense remained out of sync and the run game stuck in neutral.

The Buffs don’t have a lot of time to fix things—they play at Toledo on Friday night.

Cody Hawkins sees that as a good thing, though.

“Luckily for us we have a really short week so we get to go back on the field and try and flush this one out of our system,” he said.

Jake g...............I must be getting old....when you mentioned you went to CU when Koy was the QB...........I remember when Ken Johnson was CU's starting QB, and had Charlie Davis, John Tarver, Jon Keyworth and Cliff Branch in the backfield. Yikes! (of course, I even remember when Bobby Anderson was the CU star).

Colorado traditionally has problems with CSU, even when the Buffs are playing well. It's become a bttter, interstate rivalry. Which is what it should be.

Micheal M. I remember Koy (I was a student then) who had a chance to do something very special, win a Heisman which would have been exceptional as Salaam had just won the Heisman the year before for CU and more special as his brother had won one. He was leading the voting when his knee went out.

But that was a different time, and now we(cu) do not need to buck the coming convention, plus Hawkins is not that mobile. We were favored by 2 touchdowns or so, BIG upset. And neither the son or the father seem to be perturbed by the loss, neither seems to admit something needs to change.

The better team won here and it's evident that CSU has a solid and smart head coach whereas CU will most likely be shopping for a new guy in the near future. Cody Hawkins is awful and needs to get benched. Man do I love watching the Rammies whoop CU!

I may live in Colorado but am neutral in my teams. CONGRATS TO CSU. NICE WIN. As for the Buffs.....I am not sure what is going on there. Cody Hawkins is not the Answer. And neither is not using Scott. Maybe he is in the doghouse but he has WAY too much talent not to use. CU makes me scratch my head to the point that my scalp hurts.

CU sucks. They reep what they sow. They're fans are the most arrogant, annoying, and stuck up people around. CU gives the people of Colorado a bad name. I hope all buff fans eat sh** and die slow. F*** Y** CU.

CU just looked bad at every position on offense with the possible exception of the tight ends that were asked to go down field and catch passes. Receivers dropped passes more often than catching them; the position is RECEIVER, not speedster. The offensive linesmen were playing "be pushed backward and then do a bullfighter imitation" on most plays. The backs were too occupied with being speed bumps in the way of CSU's D-line to be an offensive option. And the quarterback had no incentive (because he is daddy's boy) to stand up and lead. It's time to fess up and admit that the Hawkins era is a failure.

Great win for CSU over the@#$%y Buffs and their classless fans. If Fairchild sticks around, he will out-recruit CU and dominate them for years.
However, the best coach and the best team in the State plays down in Colo Springs. Calhoun's Falcons could easily beat either of these teams...they do it every year to CSU and CU is afraid to find out.
But I truly enjoyed watching the CSU fans dance all over the CU field after the game. Made the drive to the People's Republic of Boulder almost bearable!

There is nothing wrong with an "undersized" QB in college, so long as the guy can move. I mean look at Chase Daniels and Todd Reesing. Both are undersized, but both can move and move well. I remember the days of Koy Detmer - small guy, but he was quick and could move around like crazy. Kordell Stewart had fair size 6-0, but he could run like a top RB. Darien Hagen was tiny - but he was a pure option QB - and CU won the National Championship with him. Koy's backup, who did well in relief, John Hessler, was also very good for a small guy.

Cody needs that scrambling and rollout passing ability which he really hasn't shown in his days at CU thus far. He is Joe Klatt part II. Anyway, I miss the days of pure option football at CU.

I'm not a CSU fan nor am I a fan of the Colorado Buffaloes ( I root for USC) but I like CSU's helmets because
I rooted for the Los Angeles Rams in the '60s and '70s before they moved to St. Louis. I guess I gave away my age there, hah!

folge you sound dumb because they are scheduled to play at our field in 2020 as part of the 11 year deal (i think 11) that they just agreed to with CU and the place they will play the next decade Invesco.

but da** straight the rams beat the buffs up and danced on their emblem in folsom...!!!

I know they will not soon forget their folly at folsom and no win til they play at csu could come close to the humilaiation they suffered this year... the hawkins dinner get togethers might be a bit solemn for a while i don't think this bodes well for dad either.

For the next decade, or maybe more, CSU will have the last win in boulder for the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Now the Rams will have a chance to own Denver again for the next 11 years. Do cu fans still think this is not a rivalry? Since 1999, the series stands at six wins for cu and five wins for CSU. For that same period, cu is 4-6 against Nebraska.

CU doesn't have the guts or ethics to play this game at Invesco, how sweet to get pummelled by the Rams. CU Sucks, Rams Rule! From here on out, an honest game at Invesco, where the real school in the real town wins the real games from here on out.

I attended CU 1973-74 and have witnessed some great times and some disappointments. Where has the running game gone? The Buffs used to be a power running team, you can't become an NFL type passing team with a mediocre short QB. CU will be lucky to keep the skill players they have recuited. Has coach Hawkins avoided the blue chip QB to keep his son playing. And where did the much herald offensive lineman go??? Sorry coach but you havent produced, time to move on.

I agree with B.S. (no C needed) guy, this charade with the Bowl system has got to end, and I was hoping that with the downturn of the economy that less corporate money in the system would help affect some change sooner rather than later, but it doesn't seem to have made an impact yet. The MWC conference is making a strong statement for inclusion in this Bowl charade, and it shouldn't take eligible teams to have undefeated season in order to just be considered. There are plenty of bad teams in each B.S. conference that couldn't hang with the top MWC teams for sure.

Again this shows that Hawkins is not the answer for the Buffs. They go out and recruit 5 and 4 star athletes at most of the important spots, RB LB DL etc. but leave out the MOST IMPORTANT SPOT. This is getting to the point that we might have to look for a new coach. I amazes me that he is content with the QB position when coming into this season his record is 13-23 with a bowl loss. If he can recruit a guy like Darrell Scott who was the top RB prospect , why is he not going after a top QB. Even if his son was not the QB, this is just plain dumb. I think the Buffs will be a top college when Cody Hawkins gets out of here and we can get back to drawing top recruits in at all of the keys spots. Nepotism can be an evil thing when it meets up with football.....LOL

One last thing, do you STILL see us winning 10 games Mr. Hawkins?

Shouldn't get our hopes up for nothing.

Also I thought he was an offensive Guru, we were dead last in almost all offensive stats last year. Also he has never had a winning record even at Boise against the big league teams.

Yes Loise S. there were line issues in the 1st half but why were there no adjustments in the 1st half? In the 2nd, they rolled Cody out and chip blocked to get him more time. The coach should have made the adjustments in the 1st.

Also what was with all the run plays up the middle in the 4th when CU was down by 10?

How long are we going to wait for an impovement in coaching? In the first half, Stucker just sat in the pocket not a blitz to be seen. Where was the timeout toward the end of the 1st half to maybe get 3.

Going for it on 4th down on our side of the field was the end of our momentum in the 2nd half.

Where is Gary when you need him.

I don't think this was all a QB issue. Did any of you watch the CU offensive line. It is terrible and they get beat every single play. Hawk had only 2 or 3 seconds to get rid of the ball. I'm not a fan of either team, hell I'm a KSTATE fan and that is bad enough, but I can tell you this will be a long year for the Big 12 north.
