Marshall beats Southern Illinois 31-28

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Brian Anderson threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns to lead Marshall to a 31-28 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday.

Chuck Walker had 119 yards on 10 catches, while Cody Slate caught nine passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns for the Thundering Herd. Marshall gained 388 yards of total offense in the season opener for both teams.

The Salukis, who had three turnovers, brought the game within 31-28 with 1:40 left on a 5-yard run by Chris Dieker. Marshall recovered the Salukis’ onside kick to win for the first time in three meetings between the two teams.

Dieker finished with four touchdowns—two rushing and two passing. He also threw for 206 yards and gained 24 yards on the ground.

Southern Illinois’ running game was led by Deji Karim, who carried the ball 16 times for 67 yards.
