LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)—Taylor Potts threw for two touchdowns and ran for two others to lead Texas Tech past North Dakota 38-13 on Saturday night.

The Red Raiders (1-0) scored three of their five TDs on the ground, unusual for a team known for its pass-happy offense.

Potts, in his first start, got his rushing touchdowns on sneaks from 1 yard out. He also had three interceptions, one more than he had in the two seasons he played backup. North Dakota safety Joel Schwenzfeier intercepted all of them to tie a school record.

Tech kept the Fighting Sioux secondary wondering which receiver was Potts’ target. He was 34-of-48 for 405 yards to 10 receivers.

Detron Lewis led Tech receivers with 146 yards on eight catches, pulling in Potts’ longest—a 49-yarder—for a score.

Mitch Sutton got North Dakota’s lone touchdown on a 9-yard run in the final quarter to whittle the margin to 28-13.

Potts’ second touchdown pass came late in the game when he hit Adam James, son of former SMU running back Craig James, for an 18-yard score to put the Red Raiders up 38-13.

North Dakota (0-1) was overmatched throughout, but the Fighting Sioux managed to keep the Red Raiders from blowing them out. Last year, Texas Tech averaged 44 points per game, so North Dakota’s defense managed what many schools last year couldn’t: they stayed relatively close throughout.

Before the season began Texas Tech coach Mike Leach told Potts that if he avoided interceptions and sacks he would be fine. Last year, Graham Harrell, who had two 5,000-yard passing seasons to set an NCAA record, threw nine interceptions in 13 games.

Potts’ three interceptions came in 48 attempts. The two he threw as a backup came in 85 attempts.

Potts is Leach’s sixth quarterback since his arrival in 2000. In eight of the past nine years, Leach’s quarterbacks have led the nation in passing, and he has said Potts is better prepared in his first year than any of the others.

The Fighting Sioux, a Football Championship Subdivision team which won the Division II title in 2001, is in its second provisional year in what was formerly known as Division I-AA.

Expectations were low for North Dakota, but it wanted to keep the Red Raiders offense off the field. The Fighting Sioux’s offense was successful in a couple of first-half drives but was only able to garner field goals.

Jake Landry was 20-of-28 for 134 yards in his first start for the Fighting Sioux.

North Dakota stopped Texas Tech drives with interceptions twice in the first half. Potts’ second interception came as he tried to hit James along the sideline inside the Sioux 20. The ball hung in the air, and Schwenzfeier had time to move in front of James and grab the pass.

The win gave Leach his 77th victory at Tech. He is six victories short of surpassing Spike Dykes for the most wins by a Tech coach.

Husker fan in N. Dakota, I love to see Tech struggle I have been in the in your shoes the last few years. One thing I would like to bring up this was the super bowl for NDSU , they are d1aa, but a good one, they gave everything they and and put the best on the field, It is hard for Tech coaches, to get the boys ready for these guys. Don't give up on them Leech will beat someone he should not beet, and may lose to someone he should not, but in the end you will be OK

Just think about it, if the players made a difference, A&M, with all the blue chip players year in and year out would be in the top 10 every year......it's the coach that makes a difference. Tech has how many blue chip players every year? Texas has so many blue chip players, you could lose count, wouldn't you like to be a coach at UT like Mack? Even a so so coach could do what he does given the talent he has to work with. Hey, Tech, tied for 1st last year with OU and Texas....that is a coach that knows how to use his talent that he has available. Give Coach Leach credit where credit is due....not ranked? It's better to be in Tech's position, than to be ranked No 3 like OU and lose up front....GO TECH, the tradition continues, also, who was the CEO of AT&T (Tech Grad) , and who did the government pick to head up and fix GM with no pay? A Tech Grad!!

Just have to post a note in frustration. I grew up around Lubbock, but am currently living in St. Louis. I made a couple of games last year and planned on making it to a couple this year. I attended the Tech/ND game and have to admit my frustration with our fans (at least on the Home Team side). I had tickets on the front row, 20 yard line, and was asked by the usher staff to sit down during the game twice! Now that is a bunch of BS!! Are we that d@%! lazy at our games now? Are you kidding me? At a football game???? And you say your fans??? The usher said both times that people were complaining about not being able to see the game......... ummm, stand up and support the team maybe. IF I go back to game this year, you can bet that I WILL not be sittting in the BI$@%Y section, wwhat a bunch of puds! Watch the Aggie and Longhorn games this year and see how many fans sit down there. We have a long way to go.

Potts will be fine. One of those 3 ints was thrown at the end of the half when he was just trying to get in position for a last second FG. Also Batch had a hurt shoulder so that's why you didn't see him run as much.

Potts will end up being the best QB's that Tech has ever had. Mark my words. He will also be drafted in at least the 3rd round if not higher in the 2nd of the NFL.

Texas will prob be rough here in 2 weeks, but it will be great experience for him nonetheless. Potts will be a household name by the end of the year.

its going to be a rough season but if Potts can stay healthy and plant his foot when he throws. He will become more confident in the offense. On the other hand our defense and special team looked alot better than in years past hopefully we will be known for being a great all around team than just pass happy.

I am scared - here we come 6-6; We dont have a chance in the Big 12 this year. OSU, NEB and UT on the road, I just hope we dont get beat by 50. 3 INT's against FCS team is horrible. Look out bumpy road ahead.
